Nell Bowden
CROSS PLAINS - Nell Bowden, 78, owner of Highway 36 Motel, formerly Odoms, for many years, died Wednesday in Eastland County.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in Higginbotham Funeral Home Chapel with Bob Pipes officiating. Burial will be in Cross Plains Cemetery.
Mrs. Bowden was a member of the Church of Christ and was the widow of Gerald A. Bowden.
Survivors include one son, Brad Bowden of Cross Plains; one daughter, Betsy Bowden of Possum Kingdom; one brother, Cye Page of Brownwood; one sister, Estelle Lemmons of Brownwood; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Robinson 'Bob' Hendon Scogin
SWEETWATER - Robinson "Bob" Hendon Scogin, 80, died Thursday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Malcolm Brown and Bill Perkins officiating. Burial will be in Palava Cemetery.
Mr. Scogin was born in Wood County and married Annie Monez Neeper in 1945 in Sweetwater. He moved to Sweetwater in 1945 and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He worked as a lineman for TU Electric and was a member of Highland Heights United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, of Sweetwater; two sons, Dennis C. Scogin of Fort Worth and Robert Scogin of Cleburne; two sisters, Kathleen Brown of Mount Pleasant and Gene Crawford of Rockwall; and two grandchildren.

Shelby Jean Gutzke
Shelby Jean Gutzke, 58, died Wednesday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Faith, 5701 U.S. Hwy 277 South, with Dr. Tim Temple officiating. Burial will be in Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories Cemetery.
Mrs. Gutzke was born in Isanti, Minn., and graduated from South High School in Minneapolis. She moved to Abilene in 1978 from San Antonio. She worked for U-Haul Co. in Abilene for eight years as a traffic controller and was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, David Gutzke of Abilene; three daughters, Darla Gutzke, Lisa Robinson and Lora Chittum, all of Abilene; three brothers, Glen Horstman of Eagan, Minn., Gilbert Horstman of Bloomington, Minn., and Richard C. Horstman of Chippewa Falls, Wisc.; two sisters, Shirley Hales of Minneapolis and Betty Holmes of Frederic, Wisc.; and seven grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to Hendrick Hospice Care, P.O. Box 1922, Abilene 79604.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Jean Gedeon
Jean Gedeon, 59, distribution supervisor for the Abilene Reporter-News, died Saturday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Victory Family Worship Center with the Rev. Randy Estes officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park, directed by North's Funeral Home, 242 Orange.
Mrs. Gedeon grew up in Detroit and moved, in 1971, to Abilene, where she married Don Gedeon in 1981.
She started a career, in 1971, that spanned a total of more than 18 years at the ARN in the distribution department. She began as an assistant night foreman. She left the newspaper in 1977. She was employed by Kiva Inn as an assistant manager and day supervisor of waitresses from 1979 until 1985, when she returned to the newspaper as distribution night foreman. She was promoted to her present position in 1996.
She was real active with the Victory Christian Academy, having recently gone through training to work with the students. The school, in only its second year, is dedicating its 1997-98 year in memory of Gedeon. She also was an active member of Victory Family Worship Center.
Survivors include her husband, of Abilene; three daughters, Traci Appleton and Kimber Schneider, both of Abilene, and Kathy Grant of Midland; three sons, Daniel Woods, David Woods and Scott Nash, all of Abilene; one brother, Joseph Calsada of Abilene; 11 grandchildren; and several nephews, nieces and cousins.

Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Macario Lopez Gomez Jr.
Macario Lopez Gomez Jr., 54, died Friday at his home.
A prayer service will be at 9 a.m. Monday in St. Vincent Pallotti Catholic Church with the Rev. Joe Uecker officiating. Graveside services will be at 9:45 a.m. in Cedar Hill Cemetery, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Mr. Gomez was born in San Angelo. He moved to Abilene from San Angelo and was a self-employed bricklayer.
Survivors include two sons, Macario Gomez III of Abilene and Michael Gomez of Fort Worth; three daughters, Gloria Gomez Robles of Abilene, Salome Jaques of Anson and Nadine Gomez of Lansing, Mich.; six brothers, Delores Gomez of Abilene, Martin Gonzales of Ballinger, Gilberto Gomez and Felipe Gomez, both of San Angelo, Lorenzo Martinez of Dallas and Raul Gomez of Arlington; four sisters, Eva Arroyo of Abilene, Dianna Gomez and Stella Gomez, both of San Angelo, and Minnie Armendariz of Ballinger; and 15 grandchildren.

Jerry Ray Smith, infant, died Friday in a local hospital.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. today in Cedar Gap Cemetery with the Rev. Dennis Hayes officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Survivors include his parents, Wayne and Anna Smith of Abilene; one brother, Stephen Alexzander Smith of Abilene; his paternal grandparents, Jerry W. and Janie Smith of Tuscola; his paternal great-grandparents, Horace and Maxine Northrop of Tuscola, and Opal Smith of Abilene; his maternal grandparents, Brenda and James Storie of Abilene; and his maternal great-grandmothers, Lenora Storie and Ida Campbell, both of Abilene.

Elodia Flores Diaz
Elodia Flores Diaz, 59, died Friday in a local hospital.

Mrs. Diaz was born in Sonora and moved to Abilene in 1962 from San Angelo. She married Lino T. Diaz in 1965 in Abilene and worked as a registered nurse at Hendrick Medical Center and the Taylor County Health Department. She was a member of St. Vincent Pallotti Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband, of Abilene; two sons, Lawrence "Joe" Diaz of Lubbock and Oscar Lino Diaz of Abilene; one daughter, Debi Diaz Salazar of Abilene; and one sister, Oralia Sanchez of San Angelo.

J.R. Shores
EULA - J.R. Shores, 71, died Friday in an Abilene hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Bailey Funeral Home Chapel in Clyde with the Rev. Johnny Hailes officiating. Burial will be in Eula Cemetery.
Mr. Shores was born in Lawn, where he attended school, and married Georgia Gardner in 1950 in Trenton, Mo. He moved to Eula in 1969 from Abilene and was a retired mechanic of Bridwell Oil in Abilene. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, of Eula; one son, Gary Shores of Abilene; one daughter, Tammy Click of Abilene; one brother, W.D. Shores of Palestine; two sisters, Mrs. Claude Coates of Novice and Mrs. Bud Salyers of Abilene; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mabel Reid Martin
BLANKET - Mabel L. Reid Martin, 82, died Saturday in a Brownwood hospital after a 1-1/2 year illness.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Heartland Funeral Home Chapel in Early with the Rev. Billy Camp and Gary Day officiating. Burial will be in Blanket Cemetery.
Ms. Martin was born in Peacock and was a retired employee of the Abilene State School. She moved to Blanket in 1986 from Abilene.
Survivors include one daughter, Linda Reagan of Abilene; three sons, Wilson Reid of Mesquite, Preston Reid of Blanket and Ronnie Reid of Kerrville; one sister, Grace Skipworth of Haskell; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 2-3 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Lillian Eva Clark
RISING STAR - Lillian Eva Clark, 66, died Friday in an Abilene hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Higginbotham Funeral Home Chapel with Dick Williams and James McLeod officiating. Burial will be in Rising Star Cemetery.
Mrs. Clark was born in Monticello, Ark., and married Virgil Clark in 1956 in Lovington, N.M. She owned and operated Clark's Cafe in Midkiff for 17 years before retiring. She moved to Rising Star in 1986 from Midkiff and was a member of Rebecca Lodge. She was a Baptist.
Survivors include her husband, of Rising Star; one son, Joe Clark of LaPlace, La.; one sister, Mary Ann Wong of Euless; one brother, Milton Herman Walters of Farmington, N.M.; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
