Velma Opal Huckleberry
LONGMONT, Colo. - Velma Opal Huckleberry, 85, died Saturday at a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Church of Christ with Bob Lewis and Bob Connel officiating, directed by Lewellen Longmont Memorial Chapel. Graveside services will be Friday in Marble Falls.
Mrs. Huckleberry was born in Mountain Home, Ark., where she grew up and attended school. She attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and lived in various parts of Texas and Oklahoma before moving to Marble Falls in 1964. They moved to Longmont in 1987. She was a homemaker and was active with Mountain States Children's Home. She was a member of the Church of Christ of Longmont. She married Siedel Albert Huckleberry in 1934 in Wewoka, Okla.; he preceded her in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Doyle of Longmont and Edith Connel of Abilene; one sister, Louise Grimenstein of Dixon, Tenn.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Nancy 'New' Thate
COLEMAN - Nancy "New" Thate, 51, of Burkett died Sunday at a Temple hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Concho Baptist Church with the Rev. Sam Tomlinson and Dr. Charles Sheffield officiating. Burial will be in Coleman City Cemetery, directed by Heartland Funeral Home of Early.
Mrs. Thate was born in Coleman, where she attended school and lived all her life. She was a bookkeeper for Central Texas Opportunities and a member of the Worship Center of Brownwood.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Thate of Burkett; one son, Chuck New of Coleman; three sisters, Barbara Gillis and Lena Wallis of Coleman and Louise Newsom of Maryneal; and four grandchildren.
The body will lie in state at Stevens Funeral Home this morning.

Doris Harris
BROWNWOOD - Doris "Granny Goose" Harris, 68, formerly of Houston, died Monday.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with Jean Law officiating. The body will be cremated.
Mrs. Harris was born in Comesnall and went to school in Deavers. She was a cook and a child care worker for Little Mother Goose Nursery and Friendship House. She married Bobby Roy Harris of Cross Plains; he preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons, Brad Harris of Wimberly and Jay Harris of Whitney; two daughters, Kathy Baker and Liz Cox, both of Brownwood; one brother, R.J. Underwood of Australia; three sisters, Belle Morrow and Reba Crisp, both of Beaumont, and Lena Ray King of Anahuac; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and numerous stepgrandchildren and step great-grandchildren.

Florence Heleman
CORPUS CHRISTI - Florence Heleman, 85, died Saturday at a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Sawyer-George Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Simmons officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Rotan.
Mrs. Heleman was born in Stephenville and was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Rotan.
Survivors include one daughter, Jo Vetta (Jimmy) Hardin of Bishop; one son, Maurice "Ronna" Heleman of Kingsville; seven grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Rufus Milton Schmidt
HASKELL - Rufus Milton Schmidt, 74, died Sunday at an Abilene hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church with Gary Bruns officiating. Burial will be in Willow Cemetery, directed by Holden-McCauley Funeral Directors.
Mr. Schmidt was born in Belton and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a farmer for 50 years and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He married Elvira Wolsch in 1947 in Sagerton.
Survivors include his wife, of Haskell; three sons, Alvin Schmidt of Canyon, Milton Schmidt of Fort Worth and Derrel Schmidt of Wills Point; one daughter, Edith Schmidt of Haskell; two brothers, Valton Schmidt and Edgar Schmidt, both of Haskell; and four grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Sybil Vinson Summers
SANTA ANNA - Sybil Vinson Summers, 99, died Sunday at a local nursing home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Raymond Jones and Marty Reed officiating. Burial will be in Santa Anna Cemetery.
Mrs. Summers was born in Tishaminga, Miss., and grew up and graduated from high school in Santa Anna. She graduated from Sealy Nursing School in Santa Anna and moved to Murfreesboro, Tenn., in 1938, returning to Santa Anna in 1983. She was a member of First Baptist Church and Eastern Star. She was a registered nurse at Sealy Hospital and Vanderbilt Hospital and the VA hospital in Tennessee. She married Quinton Summers in 1937 in Santa Anna; he preceded her in death.
Survivors include one stepson, Sewell Summers of Murfreesboro; one stepdaughter, Louise Carter of Murfreesboro; eight stepgrandchildren, 14 step great-grandchildren, eight step great-great-grandchildren and several cousins.
The family will be at the funeral home from 6-7 p.m. today.

Stephen 'Louis' Nowak
STRAWN - Stephen "Louis" Nowak, 63, died Sunday.
Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at St. John's Catholic Church. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Vincent Inametti officiating. Burial will be in Dodson Prairie Cemetery, directed by Edwards Funeral Home.
Mr. Nowak was born in Ranger, grew up in Strawn and graduated from Strawn High School. He was an Air Force veteran and worked for Brazos Electric for 20 years. He worked for General Dynamics for six years and also for Southern Airways and Lone Star Gas. He was a member of the Strawn school board for nine years and had been a member of Strawn Lions Club. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and the Catholic Men's Club. He married Gloria McLellan in 1966 in Duluth, Minn.
Survivors include his wife, of Strawn; his mother, Alre Nowak of Strawn; one son, Stephen Nowak Jr. of Strawn; two brothers, Charles Nowak and Joseph Monroe Nowak of Dodson Prairie; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Otto (Lena Fay) Irby
COLEMAN - Mrs. Otto (Lena Fay) Irby, 87, died Sunday at a San Angelo nursing home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Merritt officiating. Burial will be in White Chapel Cemetery.
Mrs. Irby was born in Harper and graduated from Santa Anna High School and San Marcos State Teacher's College. She was a member of First Baptist Church and worked with her husband at Otto Irby Upholstery Shop. She married Prentice Otto Irby in 1930 in Coleman; he preceded her in death.
Survivors include one daughter, Nyla Dell Robenstrom of San Angelo; three brothers, Preston Childs of San Angelo, Ed Childs of California and Clifton Childs of Kansas; one grandson and a number of nieces and nephews.

Arnaldo "Ray" Garcia
Arnaldo "Ray" Garcia, 31, of Abilene died Sunday at a local hospital.
Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis Catholic Church with Rev. David Matz officiating. Burial will be in Abilene directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory. A prayer service will be at 7 tonight at the funeral home chapel.
Mr. Garcia was born in Abilene where he has lived all of his life. He worked as a self-employed paint contractor.
He married Lucy Cortinaz in Abilene in 1983 and was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church.
In addition to his wife Lucy Garcia of Abilene, survivors include three sons, Arnaldo Garcia, Jr., Paul Elias Garcia and John Marcus Garcia all of Abilene; his parents, Elias Garcia and Mary Garcia of Abilene; two brothers, John Garcia and Tony Garcia of Abilene; four sisters, Elisa Solis, Margie Garcia Pedroza, Mary Florez and Christine Garcia, all of Abilene; and a grandmother, Claudia Davila of Abilene.
