Gabino Diaz
HASKELL - Gabino Andrada Diaz, 87, longtime Haskell County laborer and a decorated veteran of World War II, died Sunday at a Haskell care home.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Saint George Catholic Church with Father Michael Melcher official. Burial will be in Willow Cemetery under direction of Holden-McCauley Funeral Directors.
Born in Granger, Texas, he earned two Bronze Stars for bravery during World War II. He also earned a Purple Heart for wounds suffered in combat.
He married Evangelina Diaz here in 1963. He was a farm laborer and a member of the Catholic church.
Survivors include his wife of Haskell; two sons, Leroy Diaz of Lake Jackson and Ruben Diaz of Haskell; a daughter, Irma Muniz of Rule; two stepchildren, Julian Bentura of Kennedy, Texas, and Maria Hernandez of Norwalk, Ohio; two foster children, Terry and Jerry Snelling of Haskell; one brother, Andres Diaz of Ralls; one sister, Marcelina Diaz Ortiz of Farmsville, Calif.; four grandchidlren and three stepgrandchildren.

D.B. Williams
BROWNWOOD - D.B. Williams, 76, retired production superintendent for BTA Oil Production Co., died Sunday night in an Abilene hospital.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First Baptist Church of Brady. Masonic graveside services and burial will be in Camp San Saba Cemetery in McCulloch County under direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home.
Mr. Williams will lie in state at the Brady church from 11 a.m. until service time on Wednesday.
He was born in McCulloch County and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Margaret Sutton in Abilene in 1962. He moved to Brownwood two months ago from Midland, where he had lived for the past 10 years.
He was a Baptist and a member of the Camp San Saba Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Jody Williams of Combine, Texcas, and David L. Farmer of Houston; a daughter, Margaret Cloud of Brownwood; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and three sisters, Mary McAlpine of Midland, Dot Long of Kerrville and Margaruite Neal of Brady.

Lydia Beard
ANDERSON, Ind. - Lydia A. Beard, 84, a native of Ballinger and former resident of Abilene, died Sunday at her home here following a lengthy illness.
Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at South Meridian Church of God in Anderson with the Rev. Dale Landis officiating. Burial will be in Grove Lawn Cemetery at Pendleton, Ind., under direction of Owens Funeral Home of Alexandria. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
She was born in Ballinger, and married William H. Beard in 1940 in Ballinger. They moved here from Abilene in 1965. He died in 1996.
She was a homemaker and a member of South Meridian Church of God. She served in many capacities in her church, retiring a year ago from being church librarian. Her family and her church were her life. She wrote two books on her family history.
Survivors include three daughters, Carol McQuirk of Menlo Park, Calif. Jennie McCoy and Patti Baker, both of Anderson; one son, Bill Beard of Page, Ariz.; two sisters, Lena Bounds of Ballinger, and Ruth Mohn, of Louisville, Ohio; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, John Courvisier of Phoenix, Ariz., and Frank Courvisier of Middletown, Ohio.
Memorial contributions may be made to Liberty Christian School, 2323 Columbus, Ave. in Anderson.

Howard Lee Hill
Howard Lee Hill, 89, of Tye and formerly of Miles, died Monday in a local nursing home.
Graveside services with military honors will be at 4 p.m. Thursday in Miles Cemetery, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 U.S. Hwy 277 South.
Mr. Hill was born in Killeen and graduated from Miles High School. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He also was in the Air National Guard and received a Purple Heart. He worked as a civil engineer at Dyess Air Force Base until retiring. He was a member of Miles First Baptist Church and was the widower of Marie Gill Hill.
Survivors include two daughters, Mattie Marie Hill of Fort Worth and Emma Lee Hill of Tye; and one sister, Emma Lou Davidson of McCamey.

Lera Mae Eager
Lera Mae Eager, 79, of Lewisville and formerly of Abilene, died Monday in Lewisville.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today in Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory, with David Hutton and Terry Bouchelle officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Winters.
Mrs. Eager was born in Runnels County and graduated from Norton High School. She married Clarence Ray Eager in 1940 in Runnels County and was a homemaker. She moved to Lewisville in 1994 from Abilene and was a member of Garden Ridge Church of Christ in Lewisville.
Survivors include her husband, of Lewisville; two daughters, Lou Nell Bouchelle of Lewisville and Glenna Hutton of Tahoka; two brothers, Leon Bahlman of San Angelo and Nelan Bahlman of Winters; two sisters, Willie Ruth Teague of Sweetwater and Jewel Teague of Irving; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

James Harvey Smith
LONGVIEW -- James Harvey Smith, 60, relative of four Big Country residents, died Monday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Macon Baptist Church with the Revs. Don Smith and Ted White officiating. Burial will be in Macon Cemetery, directed by Harvey Funeral Home of Mount Vernon.
Mr. Smith was born in Comanche and was a helicopter pilot with the U.S. Army for 17 years. He also was in the U.S. Navy for four years, including two tours during the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife, Sonja F. McConnell Smith of Longview; one son, James Smith of Macon; one daughter, Alicia McDorman of Longview; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James C. Smith of Eastland; two sisters, Ann Boone of Gorman and Joyce Hutchens of Cisco; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Audrey Weekes
STRAWN -- Audrey Weekes, 78, died Monday in a Fort Worth hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Strawn First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom Beaty officiating. Burial will be in Mount Marion Cemetery, directed by Edwards Funeral Home.
Mrs. Weekes was born in Gibtown and graduated from Ranger High School. She worked during World War II at a plant in Ranger that made ammunition boxes. She was employed by Atlas Corp. and Worth Wells in Odessa as a draftsman for 30 years and moved to Strawn in 1993. She was the widow of Kenneth Weekes, whom she married in 1937 in Houston.
Survivors include one son, Bob Weekes of Mingus; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

William 'Bill' Tubbs
ANSON -- William M. "Bill" Tubbs, 87, died Sunday in Anson.
Services were held Tuesday in Anson First Baptist Church with the Revs. Lee Welch and Jerry Pittman officiating. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery, directed by Lawrence-Adams Funeral Home.
Mr. Tubbs was born in Jones County, where he attended school, and married Milor Clark in 1933 in Anson. He was a farmer and dairyman. He worked at the Anson cotton gins and for the Texas Highway Department until retiring in 1975. He moved to Anson in 1993 and was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, of Anson; one son, Billy C. "Bill" Tubbs of Anson; one daughter, Betty Lunday of Anson; one sister, Traleta Jenkins of Anson; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Ima Lee Spurlin Smith
RULE -- Ima Lee Spurlin Smith, 91, died Monday in an Abilene hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Rule First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Daniel Ramey and John Greeson officiating. Burial will be in Willow Cemetery in Haskell, directed by McCauley-Robison Funeral Directors.
Mrs. Smith was born in Kopperl in Bosque County and moved to Haskell County in 1920. She was a homemaker. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and was the widow of Joe B. Smith, whom she married in 1926.
Survivors include one sister, Norene Phillips of Manchester, Conn.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
