A.D. 'Derwood' Cox
RANGER -- A.D. "Derwood" Cox, 72, died Friday in a Temple hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Hayes officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Mr. Cox was born in Strawn, where he graduated from high school in 1944, and served with the U.S. Army's transportation division in the European Theater during World War II. He returned to Strawn in 1947. He married Wanda Wheeler in 1947 and moved to San Angelo, where he played semi-professional baseball for the San Angelo Colts for two years. He worked as an oilfield roughneck, tool pusher and consultant for a total of 20 years in West Texas and Oklahoma until retiring due to ill health. He returned to Ranger in 1993 and was life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of Frink Baptist Church in McAlister, Okla.
Survivors include his wife, of Ranger; two sons, Rickey Cox and Danny Cox, both of Ranger; three grandchildren; one uncle and one aunt; and many cousins.

M.G. Walthall
COLEMAN -- M.G. Walthall, 93, died Saturday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Northway officiating. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. in Lakeland Hills Memorial Park in Burnet.
Mr. Walthall was born in Cleburne and lived most of his life in Coleman. He attended school in Coleman. He married Inez Parker in 1929 in Coleman and also lived in Burnet and Kerrville. He worked as a heavy equipment operator in construction until retiring. He was a Baptist and was the widower of Zella Vaughn Walthall, whom he married in 1944 in San Angelo.
Survivors include one son, John Walthall of Coleman; a companion, Virgie Baugh of Coleman; two stepdaughters, Billie Mathis of San Antonio and Zella Brown of Austin; three grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 3-4 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Jan Gazaway
BROWNWOOD -- Jan Gazaway, 82, died Friday in a local nursing home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Coggin Avenue Baptist Church with Dr. Steve McMeans officiating. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Gaines County Cemetery in Seminole, directed by Davis-Morris Funeral Home.
Mrs. Gazaway was born in Athens, Texas, and was a homemaker. She lived in Las Vegas, N.M., Lubbock and Seminole before moving to Brownwood in 1987. She was a member of Coggin Avenue Baptist Church and was the widow of J.B. Gazaway, whom she married in 1934 in Alamogordo, N.M.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Harris of Brownwood; two sons, Jerry Gazaway of Brownwood and Tom Gazaway of San Diego; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Tommye Loraine Harlan
MUNDAY -- Tommye Loraine Harlan, 70, died Friday in a Seymour hospital.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. today in Goree Cemetery with Kent Trainham officiating, directed by McCauley-Smith Funeral Home.
Ms. Harlan was born in Knox County and worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Goree. She attended Methodist Hospital Nursing School in Lubbock. She worked as a college dormitory mother in Lubbock from 1969-73. She returned to Munday and worked as a licensed vocational nurse for the Seymour Hospital Authority.
Survivors include one daughter, Beverly Hamilton of Huntington Beach, Calif.; her mother, Ola Coffman of Munday; and one grandchild.

Amber Toliver Buchanan
BROWNWOOD -- Amber Toliver Buchanan, 88, died Friday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today in Heartland Funeral Home Chapel in Early with Dr. Ron Cook officiating. Burial will be private.
Mrs. Buchanan was born in Okay, Texas, and married Greene H. Buchanan in 1929 in Lometa. She worked in sales and was a member of Garden Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Women's Club in Bryan and First Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, of Brownwood; one daughter, Helen Louise Crook of Learey; one brother, Coke Toliver of Brownfield; three sisters, Merle Sedberry of Waco, and Ouita Grierson and Nell Walker, both of Brownwood; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to American Diabetes Association.

Christina Atwood
Christina C. Atwood, 53, died Thursday in a local hospital.
A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. today in North's Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, 4002 Buffalo Gap Road. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home with the Rev. Fred Nawarskas officiating. Burial will be in Cross Plains Cemetery.
Mrs. Atwood was born in Rhode Island, where she grew up. She married Leonard "Gene" Atwood in 1968 in Rhode Island and was a homemaker. She moved to Abilene in 1970 and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband, of Abilene; four daughters, Suzanne Perez of Stephenville, Jodie Helfer of Carrollton, and Christina D. Atwood and Johnnie Atwood, both of Abilene; one brother, Joseph Teixeira of Bristol, R.I.; two sisters, Mary Lou Russo of Holliston, Mass., and Ann Wajda of Barrington, R.I.; and four grandchildren.

Murlene Porter
Murlene M. Porter, 70, died Wednesday in a local hospital.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in San Marcos City Cemetery with the Rev. Mickey Fugitt officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Mrs. Porter was born in San Antonio and graduated from high school in Amarillo. She attended Hardin-Simmons University and married Preston Porter in 1949 in Clovis, N.M. She moved to Abilene in 1955 from Ohio. She worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for Preston Porter Electric until retiring in 1994. She was a Baptist missionary and was a member of South Side Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, of Abilene; one son, Preston C. Porter Jr. of Titusville, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to a favorite charity or missions organization.
The body will be at the funeral home until 9 p.m. today.

Rose Bennett Robinson
Rose Bennett Robinson, 90, died Monday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Mount Moriah Baptist Church with the Rev. L.W. Hutchinson officiating. Burial will be in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, directed by Curtis-Starks Funeral Home, 542 E.N. 7th.
Mrs. Robinson was born in Milam County and moved to Taylor County in 1939. She married Walter Robinson in 1942 in Taylor County. She worked for Dr. Sol Estes and family for 18 years until retiring and was a member of the usher board for 40 years at Mount Moriah Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Vernon Robinson of Englewood, Calif.; two nieces; one nephew, Willie Lockett of Abilene; and many other relatives.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Rufus Burwell Edmundson
DENTON -- Rufus Burwell Edmundson, 86, formerly of Abilene, died Wednesday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Bell Avenue Church with the Rev. Buddy Owens officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Crossroads, directed by Mulkey-Mason/Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home.
Mr. Edmundson was born in Rice, Texas, and married Mary Nancy Swafford in 1936 in Corsicana. He worked as an assistant substation engineer for West Texas Utilities for 40 years and was a member of Bell Avenue Church.
Survivors include his wife, of Denton; one son, Gerald Ernest Edmundson of Denton; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Maggie Estella Dalbert
ANSON -- Maggie Estella Dalbert, 98, charter member of Bethsaida Baptist Church, died Wednesday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Bethsaida Baptist Church with the Revs. Kenneth P. Deckard and William Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, directed by Lawrence-Adams Funeral Home.
Mrs. Dalbert was born in Pittsburg, Texas, where she attended school, and moved to Anson in 1920. She was a homemaker and worked as a secretary for many years at Bethsaida Baptist Church. She sang in the church choir and was active in the mission program. She was the widow of Oscar Moore and Bozie Dalbert.
Survivors include three sons, Otis Moore of Anson, and Vernon Moore and David Dalbert, both of Abilene; three daughters, Henrietta Oliver of Anson, Katherine Harvey of San Diego and Margaret McKenzie of Albuquerque, N.M.; two sisters, Louise Butler and Ethel Houston, both of Pasadena, Calif.; 48 grandchildren; 77 great-grandchildren; and 77 great-great-grandchildren.

Melvin Means
THROCKMORTON -- Melvin Means, 76, of Bedford and formerly of Throckmorton, died Wednesday in a Bedford hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Merriman-Archer Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Bill Felts and Mike Fortenberry officiating. Burial will be in Throckmorton Cemetery.
Mr. Means was born in Throckmorton and married Barbara Ann Rackley in 1962 in Louisiana. He was a retired salesman. He lived in Lubbock, Abilene, Ruidoso, N.M., and Paris, Texas before moving to Bedford in 1998. He was a past president of Ruidoso Downs Muleskinners Association and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, of Bedford; two daughters, Lynda Nelson of Abilene and Jo Ann Robinson of Los Alamos, N.M.; one son, James Means of Abilene; three stepsons, Terry Fitzgerald of Paris, Texas, Billy Fitzgerald of Bedford and Jackie Fitzgerald of Leesburg, Ga.; two brothers, Clyde Means of Breckenridge and J.R. Means of Temple; one sister, Clara Belle Hudson of Graham; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
