Gilbert Morris
Gilbert R. Morris, 66, chief sanitarian for the Abilene-Taylor County Health Department for 34 years until retiring, died Friday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory. Burial will be in Fort Phantom Hill Cemetery in Jones County.
Mr. Morris was born in Nugent in Jones County and was a lifelong resident of Jones and Taylor counties. He graduated from Abilene High School and Hardin-Simmons University. He served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict and received a Good Conduct Medal and Expert Pistol Award. He married Delora Strickland in 1953 in Abilene and was a rancher. He was a past president of the Texas Sanitarian Association and Fort Phantom Hill Cemetery Association, and was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2012. He was a member of Crescent Heights Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, of Abilene; one son, Brent Ray Morris of Abilene; one daughter, Darla Johnson of Hamlin; his mother and stepfather, Merle Morris and E.E. Bristow of Hawley; three brothers, R.M. "Bob" Morris, Gary Morris and David G. Morris, all of Abilene; three sisters, Rosa Jean Wilson and Donna Marshall, both of Abilene, and Judy Foller of Tullahoma, Tenn.; and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to West Texas Rehabilitation Center, 4601 Hartford, Abilene 79605.
Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Dortha 'Dot' Dillard Gatlin
Dortha "Dot" Dillard Gatlin, 73, died Friday at her home.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Buffalo Gap Cemetery with the Rev. H.B. Terry Jr. officiating, directed by Fry-Bartlett Funeral Home of Tuscola.
Mrs. Gatlin was born in Tuscola, where she attended school, and moved to Longview in 1967 from Abilene. She lived in Dallas, Houston and Arlington before returning to Abilene in 1992. She worked as a consultant for Callaway Pension Service in Arlington until retiring in 1992. She then was employed by the West Central Texas Council of Governments and Green Thumb Program. She was a Presbyterian and was the widow of Lee Roy Dillard; and Harold Gatlin, whom she married in 1967 in Abilene.
Survivors include one grandson, Lee Dillard of Houston.

Jack 'Dizzy' Dean Sr.
BROWNWOOD -- Jack D. "Dizzy" Dean Sr., 69, of Lake Brownwood, died Thursday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today in May First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Hester officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, directed by Heartland Funeral Home of Early.
Mr. Dean was born in Thrifty and graduated from Hamlin High School. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and attended McMurry University. He married Glenna Watson in 1975 in Odessa and formerly lived in Odessa. He worked as a plant operator and leak detector operator for 16 years for Phillips Petroleum Co. He was a member of American Legion Post 470 at Lake Brownwood.
Survivors include his wife, of Lake Brownwood; six sons, Jack Dean Jr. of Odessa, James Dean of Bryan, Jerry Dean of Abilene, Sammy Dean of Oceanside, Calif., Tony Dean of Brownwood and Orval Tidwell of Corpus Christi; two daughters, Judy Dean of Koror Palau and Doris Cotton of Fort Worth; one brother, Ralph Dean of Andrews; 24 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and three nieces.

Larry Dale Bishop
WICHITA FALLS -- Larry Dale Bishop, 45, formerly of Cross Plains, died Friday at his home.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in Cross Plains First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Cross Plains Cemetery, directed by Lunn's Colonial Funeral Home.
Mr. Bishop was born in Rising Star and graduated from Cross Plains High School and Cisco Junior College. He taught at Texas State Technical Institute in Waco. He played semi-professional baseball for the Shook Tire Rebels in Brownwood and was a Cross Plains volunteer firefighter. He moved to Wichita Falls in 1986 from Cross Plains and married Linda Ketron in 1990 in Cross Plains. He was employed by Winn Dixie as a market manager. He was selected as an Unsung Hero by the Wichita Falls Times Record News for his work at Washington/Jackson Math/Science Technology Magnet in the hydroponics and aquaponics operations. He was a member of the North Texas Field and Stream Association, Woodman of the World and Cross Plains First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, of Wichita Falls; one daughter, Rachelle Bishop of San Angelo; one son, Clint Bishop of Abilene; his parents, Dale and Vernelle Bishop of Cross Plains; and two brothers, Wayne Bishop of Brownwood and Tim Bishop of Breckenridge.
Memorials may be sent to Wichita Falls ISD Foundation.
Visitation will be from 1:30-3 p.m. Sunday at the church in Cross Plains.

Velma Bardin
Velma Bardin, 76, died Thursday in a local nursing home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Faith, 5701 U.S. Hwy 277 South, with the Rev. Jack Ridlehoover officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park.
Mrs. Bardin was born in Big Spring and moved to Abilene in the mid-1950s. She was a homemaker and lived in Rockport for 20 years before returning to Abilene. She was a member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church and was the widow of E.D. Bardin, whom she married in 1958 in Abilene.
Survivors include two sons, John Allington of Abilene and Bob Allington of Houston; two daughters, Barbara Jean Perry of Fort Worth and Barbara Ann Davis of Houston; two stepsons, Jimmy Bardin of Abilene and Jerry Bardin of Rockport; one stepdaughter, Judy Bardin of Abilene; one sister, Billie Parker of New Mexico; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Max Preston Kelley
Max Preston Kelley, 62, died Friday at his home.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Trinity Baptist Church with Lex Kelley officiating. Arrangements were made by Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 U.S. Hwy 277 South.
Mr. Kelley was born in Pahokee, Fla., and lived most of his life in Stamford. He graduated from Hardin-Simmons University in 1967 and earned a teaching certificate from Eastern New Mexico University in Portales. He graduated from drilling tech school in Odessa and worked in the oilfield industry for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Billie Kelley of Artesia, N.M.; one stepdaughter, Cassie Owen of Artesia, N.M.; one sister, Sandra Miller of Abilene; three brothers, Carlton Kelley of New Mexico, Lex Kelley of Arlington and Ronald Kelley of Wichita Falls; and one grandchild.

Thomas Carroll
Thomas B. Carroll, 69, died Friday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Antioch CME Church with the Rev. V.L. Brown officiating. Burial will be in Oddfellows Cemetery, directed by Curtis-Starks Funeral Home, 542 E.N. 7th.
Mr. Carroll was born in Dallas and attended school in Abilene. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and married Ella Mae Clark in 1948 in Abilene. He worked for Sears and Roebuck and then at the Abilene Country Club. He was a member of Sidewinders Club and was a longtime supporter of the Woodson Boosters Club, American Cancer Society, Girl and Boy Scouts, United Political Organization, and National Association for Advancement of Colored People. He was a trustee of Antioch CME Church for many years.
Survivors include his wife, of Abilene; two daughters, Drucilla Christian of Abilene and Sharon King of Austin; two sons, Ronnie Carroll of Austin and Gary Carroll of Abilene; one sister, Doris Gumby of Grandview, Mo.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many other relatives.
The family will be at 742 Cockerell Drive.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Joseph Leo Hicks
Joseph Leo Hicks, 64, died Saturday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Faith, 5701 U.S. Hwy 277 South. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park.
Mr. Hicks was born in Woburn, Mass., and was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He married Stella Watson in 1957 in Abilene and retired from civil service in 1988 at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. He moved to Abilene in 1992 from Woburn, Mass.
Survivors include his wife, of Abilene; one daughter, Joanna Lee Hicks of Abilene; four brothers, George Hicks of Peabody, Mass., William Hicks of Winchester, Mass., Edward Hicks of Wilmington, Mass., and Arthur Hicks of Tewksbury, Mass.; and four sisters, Irene Robinson of Wilmington, Mass., Millie Rolli of Winchester, Mass., Clare Hicks of Lowell, Mass., and Cathy Mallinson of Tewksbury, Mass.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.
