Opal Dean Horsley
SNYDER -- Opal Dean Horsley, 70, lifelong Scurry County resident, died Thursday at her home after a sudden illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Eastside Church of Christ with Tom Holcomb officiating. Burial will be in Snyder Cemetery, directed by Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Mrs. Horsley was born in Stanton and was a homemaker. She worked as an operator for Southwestern Bell Telephone. She taught Bible classes at Eastside Church of Christ for many years and was the widow of Chesley Wade Horsley, whom she married in 1951 in Snyder.
Survivors include two daughters, Diane Wittie of Lubbock and Vicki Craig of Del City, Okla.; two sons, Kent Horsley of San Angelo and Jerry Don Horsley of Cedar Creek; two sisters, her twin, Ima Jean Prather of Plainview and Lee Johnson of Marietta, Ga.; one brother, Jody Johnson of Oklahoma City; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Dan Shurtleff
COLORADO CITY -- Dan Shurtleff, 79, died Thursday in a Lubbock hospital.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Colorado City Cemetery with the Rev. Sammy Elliott officiating, directed by Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.
Mr. Shurtleff was born in Colorado City and married Cecile Belle Twiford in 1942 in Kimbrell, Neb. He worked as an electrical engineer for Shell Oil for 37 years until retiring. He moved to Colorado City in 1992 from Iraan and was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, of Colorado City; one daughter, Sue Crow of Colorado City; one son, Leslie Dan Shurtleff of Plano; one sister, Lenora Pendergrass of Burleson; one brother, Phynus D. Shurtleff of Corpus Christi; and one grandchild.

Jewell Ross Rape
BROWNWOOD -- Jewell Ross Rape, 87, died Thursday in a Comanche nursing home.
Services will be at 4 p.m. today in Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel with Ted Kell officiating. Burial will be in Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston.
Mrs. Rape was born in Comanche and was a homemaker. She moved to Brownwood in 1980. She was a member of Austin Avenue Church of Christ and was the widow of Oscar Rape, whom she married in 1932 in Comanche.
Survivors include five nieces and two nephews.

Louie Stephenson
RANGER -- Louie D. Stephenson, 62, died Thursday in a Fort Worth hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Merriman Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Lively and Larry Hooper officiating. Burial will be in Merriman Cemetery, directed by Edwards Funeral Home.
Mr. Stephenson was born in Lone Cedar in Eastland County, where he attended school, and worked on the family farm for many years. He then was a paint and body repairman for Hood King Motors, Scott's Paint and Body and Floyd Caraway Paint and Body. He was a contract farmer until retiring due to ill health in 1994 and was a member of Merriman Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Louidale Hosley of Ranger, LaMinda Ainsworth of Simpson, La., and LaWanda Riley of Lompoc, Calif.; two sisters, Gloria Scott of Eastland and Sarah Ellis of San Antonio; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Helen Virginia Epley
BROWNWOOD -- Helen Virginia Epley, 83, died Friday in a local hospital.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Greenleaf Cemetery with Dr. Norbert Peil officiating, directed by Davis-Morris Funeral Home.
Ms. Epley was born in Hutto in Williamson County and lived most of her life in Brownwood. She graduated from Daniel Baker and Sul Ross colleges. She taught school on the elementary and junior high levels in Brownwood until retiring in 1979 and was a charter member of the Franklin Mint Collectors Society. She was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star and also was a member of the Brown County Retired and Retired State teachers associations, and Union Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include one brother, Thomas K. Epley of Texas City; and two nephews.
Visitation will be from 5-6 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Harry J. Kurtz
Harry J. Kurtz, 86, died Friday in a local nursing home. The body was cremated and memorial services will be held later.
Mr. Kurtz was raised in Oregon, and married Patricia Dardis in Salem, Oregon, in 1961. He worked for Pacific Northwest Bell Telephone for 33 years, retiring in 1975. He was a member of the Salem Rotary Club and the Telephone Pioneer Association. He moved to Abilene in 1994.
Survivors include his wife of Abilene; two sons, Harry H. Kurtz of Portland and Richard H. Kurtz of Oregon City; one daughter, Maryanne Anderson of Abilene; one sister, Gladys Dyer of Vancouver, Wash.; and two grandchildren.

Nellie Frances Hanson
Nellie Frances Hanson, 72, of Abilene, died Saturday in a local hospital.
Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Blackwell Cemetery with the Rev. Charles Casey officiating, and directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Mrs. Hanson was born in San Angelo and graduated from Blackwell High School. She moved to Abilene from San Angelo in 1953. She worked as a bookkeeper for the McWood Corporation for 10 years, Connally Oil Co. for 15 years and ABCO Industries for three years.
She was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Michael Hanson of Carrollton; two daughters, Kathy LaGrange of Mansfield and Barbara Berry of Anson; a sister, Jimmye Sanders of San Angelo; and two grandchildren.

Kermit C. Duckworth
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS -- Kermit C. Duckworth, 85, of North Richland Hills, died in a local nursing home on Thursday.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in North Richland Hills Baptist Church. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Abilene, directed by the Shannon Funeral Home of Fort Worth.
Mr. Duckworth was born in Archer City and grew up in Nocona. He was married in 1933 to Berniece Deere in Anson. He worked in management for the Hilton Hotel chain and as manager of the Lubbock Club for 18 years, and after retirement from that career worked as a greeter for a Metroplex Wal-Mart store for nine years. He was a member of the North Richland Hills Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Marcie Roberts of North Richland Hills; one sister, Donna Walker of Plainview; and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to the Cornerstone Assistance Network at North Richland Hills Baptist Church.

Elvin "Windy" Jones
ASPERMONT -- Elvin "Windy" Jones, 82, died Saturday in a local nursing home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church of Aspermont with the Rev. Charles Day, assisted by the Rev. Barry Taylor, officiating. Burial will be in the Aspermont Cemetery directed by McCoy Funeral Home of Aspermont.
Mr. Jones was a lifetime resident of Stonewall County. A prominent rancher, he married Dee Iva Starritt in 1940. She died in 1978. He married Mary Allen in 1980, and she died in 1996. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include three sons, Eddie Jones and Tim Jones, both of Aspermont; and Ned Jones of Seguin; two brothers. M.L. Jones and Elmer "Doll" Jones, both of Aspermont; and two sisters, Essie Driver of Aspermont and Mae Clark of Odessa; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
