Mickey O'Connor

MIDLAND - Mickey F. O'Connor, 77, mother of Abilene Reporter-News on-line editor and religion columnist Michael W. O'Connor, died Tuesday at her home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Kirk officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park, directed by Ellis Funeral Home.

Mrs. O'Connor was born in Chicago, where she attended school, and moved to Midland in 1949. She volunteered as a secretary to the Evangelism Explosion group at St. Paul United Methodist Church and also was a member of the church. She was the widow of Michael Francis O'Connor, whom she married in Illinois.

Survivors include her son, of Trent; one daughter, Robin M. Nutt of Las Cruces, N.M.; two brothers, H.A. Kayler of Midwest City, Okla., and George Kayler of Florida; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one niece and four nephews.

William Fred Walker

DALLAS - William Fred Walker, 75, formerly of Abilene, died Monday in a Richardson hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Flesher Funeral Home Chapel in Van Alstyne. Burial will be in Van Alstyne Cemetery.

Mr. Walker married Orpha Allen in 1947 in Coronado, Calif., and was a retired U.S. Navy pilot. He was a Methodist.

Survivors include his wife, of Dallas; one daughter, Alexis Walker of St. Thomas Virgin Islands; three sons, Dallas Walker of Van Alstyne, John Walker of Dallas and Calvin Walker of Georgetown; three sisters, Maye Walker Adkins and Daline Scott, both of Midland, and Faye Cole of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one brother, Gary Walker of Bonham; and three grandchildren.

Shirley Nelson

MOORE, Okla. - Shirley J. Nelson, 60, relative of two Abilene residents, died Saturday.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Elmwood Memorial Park in Abilene. Arrangements were made by John M. Ireland Funeral Home.

Mrs. Nelson was born in Sweetwater and was the widow of Vernon D. Nelson.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne A. Nelson Sr. of Von Ormy, Texas, and Curtis B. Nelson of Moore; her father, F.E. Maxwell of Abilene; one sister, Naomi Westerman of Abilene; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Phillip LeRoy Morse

BRECKENRIDGE - Phillip LeRoy Morse, 63, of Stephens County, died Monday at his home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Morehart Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Mike Clearman officiating. The body will be cremated.

Mr. Morse was born in Hoxie, Kan., where he graduated from high school, and worked as a truck driver. He married Fredda Saltzman in 1991 and moved to Breckenridge in 1996 from Abilene.

Survivors include his wife, of Stephens County; one stepson, Fred Ice of Abilene; one stepdaughter, Deborah Ice of Abilene; one brother, George Morse of Little Rock, Ark.; one sister, Helen McDougal of Denver; and two step grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to American Heart Association or a favorite charity and left at the funeral home.

Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.

Mozell Henson Cross

SYLVESTER - Mozell Henson Cross, 86, died Tuesday in a Hamlin hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Sylvester Baptist Church with Dr. Rex Irland Bland and the Rev. Bruce Hess officiating. Burial will be in Newman Cemetery, directed by Weathersbee Funeral Home of Rotan.

Mrs. Cross was born in Brown County and moved to Fisher County in 1921. She graduated from Sylvester High School in 1930 and married James Rex Cross that year in Sylvester. She taught Sunday school for many years and was a member of Sylvester Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, of Sylvester; three children, Wilma Fern Bland and Riley Doyle Cross, both of Abilene, and Zenita Lee Gardner of Sylvester; five sisters, Alma Birk of Llano, Thelma Littleton of Andice, Juanita Johnson of Stephenville, Sue Richardson of Reagan and Jean Sledge of De Leon; one brother, Oliver Henson of Sutherlin, Ore.; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Martha Foster

ANSON - Martha Foster, 82, Anson school teacher for 25 years until retiring in 1975, died Monday in an Abilene hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Anson First Baptist Church with the Rev. Lee Welch officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery at Funston, directed by Lawrence-Adams Funeral Home.

Mrs. Foster was born in Hamilton County and moved to Jones County in 1928. She graduated from Anson High School in 1932 and Hardin-Simmons University in 1936. She was a member of Retired Teachers Association, Tuesday Study Club and Rebekah Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church, and was the widow of Bruce Foster, whom she married in 1937 in Anson.

Survivors include one son, Rowland Foster of Irving; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be sent to Anson Public Library Building Fund, P.O. Box 528, Anson 79501; or a favorite charity.

Grady Holmes

O'BRIEN - Grady L. Holmes, 78, died Monday at his home after a long illness.

Services will be at 3 p.m. today in O'Brien Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Trice and Kathryn Byrd officiating. Burial will be in Rochester Cemetery, directed by Smith Funeral Home of Knox City.

Mr. Holmes was born in Thalia and lived in Haskell County most of his life. He was a U.S. Army veteran and married Ileta Oxford in 1941. He was a farmer and was a member of O'Brien Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, of O'Brien; three sons, Alan Holmes and Devris "Hoot" Holmes, both of O'Brien, and Mickey Oxford of Kenney; one daughter, Donna Patterson of Rochester; three sisters, Betty Jo Hawkins of Aspermont, Pauline Ringgold of Sonora and Fayrene Johnson of Hobbs, N.M.; three brothers, Jackie Holmes and Ray Holmes, both of Sonora, and Billy Holmes of Kingsland; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Edythe Hayley

SEYMOUR - Edythe Hayley, 78, of White Settlement and formerly of Seymour and Munday, died Sunday in White Settlement.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Seymour Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Glenn Shock officiating. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery.

Mrs. Hayley was born in Bonham and grew up in Munday. She lived in Quanah, Seymour and Fort Worth for many years. She operated the North Richland Pre-School in Fort Worth. She moved to Colorado before returning to Seymour in 1977. She operated the Seymour Day Care Center until retiring. She was a member of Pierian Club and Ready Sunday School Class at Seymour First Baptist Church and was the widow of W.B. Hayley, whom she married in 1938 in Quanah.

Survivors include one daughter, Wynette Dollar of Azle; two sons, Duane E. Hayley and Tracy Hayley, both of Fort Worth; two sisters, Doris Floyd of Munday and Jimmie Rodgers of Fort Worth; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Henry Jack Kresta

BALLINGER - Henry Jack Kresta, 71, died Monday in Ballinger.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Ballinger First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dale Schultz officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, directed by Rains-Seale Funeral Home.

Mr. Kresta was born in Runnels County and was a U.S. Navy veteran. He married Sylvia G. Mueller in 1948 in Texas and worked for Siedel Road Construction Co. for 28 years.

Survivors include his wife, of Ballinger; two sons, Clyde Kresta and Timmy Kresta, both of Ballinger; three daughters, Tammy Hawk, Linda Huffman of St. Lawrence and Ann Thomas of San Angelo; one brother, Richard Kresta of San Angelo; one sister, Dorothy Jones of Odessa; and seven grandchildren.
