J.L. 'Jake' Byrd
CROSS PLAINS - J.L. "Jake" Byrd, 76, of Brownwood died Sunday at his home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Higginbotham Funeral Home Chapel with Gary Hounshell officiating. Burial will be in Cross Cut Cemetery in Cross Cut.
Mr. Byrd was born in Cross Cut and was an Army veteran and a farmer. He married Julia Hounshell in 1976 in Brownwood.
Survivors include his wife, of Cross Cut; one son, Gary Byrd of Abilene; one stepdaughter, Hannah Payne of Bangs; two brothers, Lawrence Byrd and J.T. Byrd, both of Cross Cut; and one grandson.

Jo Ann Childress
SPUR - Jo Ann Childress, 55, of Clyde died Monday at an Abilene hospital after a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Harbison officiating. Burial will be in Spur Memorial Cemetery, directed by Campbell Funeral Home.
Mrs. Childress had lived in Clyde for 17 years, moving from Stamford. She was a secretary for Bill Reed Distributing in Abilene for several years and was a Baptist. She married Chili Childress in 1959 in Kalgary.
Survivors include her husband, of Clyde; three sons, Curtis Childress of Chattanooga, Tenn., Donnie Childress of Blooming Grove and Wesley Bennett of Stamford; and eight grandchildren.

Leona Baker Miles
CISCO - Leona Baker Miles, 78, of Okra died Monday at her home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Nimrod Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Armstrong officiating. Burial will be in Nimrod Cemetery, directed by Kimbrough Funeral Home.
Mrs. Miles was born in Blum and was a homemaker. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4136 Women's Auxiliary in Eastland and Nimrod Baptist Church. She married Johnnie Carl Miles in 1971 in Cisco; he preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Earl Baker of Clyde and Eddie Wayne Baker of Okra; one stepson, Johnny Miles of Westwego, La.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mattie Day
Mattie Day, 75, died Monday in a local hospital.
The body was cremated. A memorial service was held Tuesday in Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory, with Mike Cope officiating.
Mrs. Day was born in Wichita, Kan., and graduated from college in Weatherford, Okla. She married Morris Alan Day in 1944 in Pampa and was a homemaker. She lived in Denver for 40 years until moving to Abilene 16 months ago. She was a member of Highland Church of Christ.
Survivors include her husband, of Abilene; one son, Gene Day of Idaho Springs, Colo.; one daughter, Jan Dickerson of Abilene; and three grandchildren.

Maggie Elizabeth Willeford
Maggie Elizabeth Willeford, 77, died Tuesday in a Clyde nursing home.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Elmwood Memorial Park with the Rev. George Bryan officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Mrs. Willeford was born in Emory and moved to Abilene in 1925. She worked for Timex for 24 years. She was a Baptist and was the widow of Raymond Willeford, whom she married in 1942 in Tarrant County.
Survivors include one brother, William H. "Bill" Still of Balmorhea; one sister, Cora Caldwell of Abilene; and several nieces and nephews.

Richard Dale Purlee
BAIRD -- Richard Dale Purlee, 70, died Tuesday in an Abilene hospital.
Services will be at 3 p.m. today in Parker Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry Black officiating. Burial will be in Ross Cemetery.
Mr. Purlee was born in Plainfield, Ind., and was a U.S. Army veteran. He retired as chief of maintenance for Western Marketing and Wes-T-Go Truck Stop in Tye. He moved to Baird in 1991 from Abilene and attended First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two cousins, Judie Hadley of Clayton, Ind., and Pat Wagner of Rockville, Ind.

Jo Claire Hughes Cullers
BRECKENRIDGE -- Jo Claire Hughes Cullers, 65, died Tuesday at her home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Elliott Street Church of Christ with Gary Bodine and Jim Cox officiating. Burial will be in Breckenridge Cemetery, directed by Morehart Mortuary.
Mrs. Cullers was born in Rising Star and graduated from Cross Plains High School. She attended Abilene Christian College and married Wallace Cullers in 1951 in Pioneer. She was a homemaker and moved to Breckenridge in 1968 from Abilene. She was a member of Elliott Street Church of Christ.
Survivors include her husband, of Breckenridge; one son, Carlton Cullers of Throckmorton; three daughters, Glenna Fambro of Colorado City, Gay Ellis of Franktown, Colo., and Sue Sands of St. Joseph, Mo.; one brother, Jay Hughes of Midland; and nine grandchildren.

Harrell Geron
SWEETWATER -- Harrell J. Geron, 74, of Burleson, father of a Sweetwater resident, died Monday at his home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with Wayne Brown officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Sweetwater Cemetery.
Mr. Geron was born in Biardstown and served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Frankie Stout in 1963 in Fort Worth and worked as an electrician for Thomas Conveyor in Burleson. He was a farmer and was the widower of his first wife, Evelyn Young Geron.
Survivors include his wife, of Burleson; two sons, David Geron of Sweetwater and Harrell Geron of Little River; two daughters, Carolyn Dean of Ingram and Margaret Zaky of The Colony; one stepdaughter, Faith Hiller of Burleson; one brother, Paul Geron of Bangs; one sister, Donna Thompson of Odessa; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Veda "Dutch" Poindexter Russell, 84, died Tuesday in a Clyde nursing home.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Highway 36 Church of Christ with Dr. Ed Headrick officiating. Burial will be in Tecumseh Cemetery, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Mrs. Russell was born in Oplin, where she attended school, and was a homemaker. She was a member of Highway 36 Church of Christ and was the widow of Thomas C. "Jack" Russell, whom she married in 1945 in Baird.
Survivors include one son, Jesse Roy Russell of Abilene; and several nieces and nephews.
