Kenneth Joshua 'Josh' Burt
MUNDAY -- Kenneth Joshua "Josh" Burt, 21, died Sunday at a Dallas hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bruce Parks officiating, assisted by the Rev. Bobby King. Burial will be in Knox City Cemetery, directed by McCauley-Smith Funeral Home.
Mr. Burt was born in Knox City, where he lived until moving to Irving in 1998. He graduated from Knox City High School in 1995 and from Texas Tech University in 1998. He was a marketing consultant for Allstate and a member of Knox City First Baptist Church.
Survivors include Jan, James and Jenna Williams of Munday and Dottie and Buster Lowrey of Knox City.

Ruth McKennon
MUNDAY -- Ruth McKennon, 92, died Monday at a Lubbock nursing home.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Willow Cemetery in Haskell, directed by McCauley Smith Funeral Home.
Mrs. McKennon was born in Tennessee and moved to Forney as a child, to Haskell in 1920 and to Lubbock in 1985. She was a Methodist. She married O.D. "Jim' McKennon in 1933 in Weinert; he preceded her in death.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
The body will be at Holden-McCauley Funeral Home in Haskell from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Hazel Hancock
MORTON -- Hazel Hancock, 87, died Sunday at his home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Missionary Baptist Church with the Revs. Gordon Renshaw and Weldon Richardson officiating. Burial will be in Morton Memorial Cemetery, directed by Ellis Funeral Home of Muleshoe.
Mr. Hancock was born in Hancock (Dawson County) and moved to Morton from Lamesa in 1946. He was a farmer-rancher and a member of First Missionary Baptist Church. He had served as constable, city marshal and on the Morton City Council, where he was mayor pro-tem. He was a member of the Morton Fire Department and Morton Odd Fellows Lodge. He was retired county sheriff and county tax assessor-collector for Cochran County. He married Eunice Richardson in 1930 in Lovington, N.M.; she preceded him in death.
Survivors include three sons, Richard Hancock of El Paso, Herschel Hancock of Breckenridge and John Hancock of Morton; three daughters, Wanda Lemons of Monahans, Mayree Silhan of Morton and Melinda Angel of Lubbock; three sisters, Orene Holliday of Lamesa, Frances Scoggin of Shertz and Nancy Pruitt of Kingsland; two brothers, Mac Hancock Jr. of Farwell and W.L. Hancock of Roswell, N.M.; 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Jewell Edna Smith
WINTERS -- Jewell Edna Smith, 67, died Sunday at an Abilene hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Winters Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J.O. Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith was born in Bend and was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ. She married LaVell Smith in 1952 in Burnet.
Survivors include her husband, of Winters; one son, Andy Smith of Winters; four daughters, Joy Curry and Barbara Plumley, both of Winters, Angeline Bradshaw of Mineral Wells and Betty Ross of Friendswood; three brothers, Louis Bailey of Winters, Albert Bailey of Lampasas and Walter Bailey of Copperas Cove; one sister, Armendy Hagle of Coleman; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mrs. C.T. (Vertie) Harp
EASTLAND -- Vertie Harp, 89, died Monday at her home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bethel Baptist Church with the Revs. Jonathan Gay and Dewey Lamb officiating. Burial will be in Eastland Cemetery, directed by Bakker Funeral Home.
Mrs. Harp was born in Erath County and grew up in the Stephenville area. She graduated from Stephenville High School and attended John Tarleton College. She lived in Stephenville and Fort Worth before moving to Eastland in 1947. She was a homemaker and worked for Victor Cornelius, Inc., for many years, retiring in 1988. She was a lifetime member of Bethel Baptist Church. She married Charlie "C.T." Harp in Stephenville; he preceded her in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Wanda Moore of Midland and Sandra Squires of Eastland; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Bennie Curtis: Longtime Abilene funeral director dies
Bennie Curtis, 70, a second-generation funeral director with Curtis-Starks Funeral Home for 48 years, died Monday in a local nursing home.
Services are pending with Curtis-Starks Funeral Home, 542 E.N. 7th.
An Abilene native, Mr. Curtis graduated from Woodson High School before earning both a bachelor's degree and mortician's degree from the University of Denver in Colorado. He then returned to Abilene, where his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Curtis, opened the family funeral home at its current location in 1950.
In addition to being active with the business, he also worked for Greyhound Bus Lines as a ticket agent for 49-1/2 years.
He was a co-owner and business manager of the funeral home until becoming ill 14 months ago.
His civic involvement included being a past president of the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; a former president and state board member of the United Political Organization; grand deputy chancellor of the Knights of Pythias of Texas; and member of Far West Lodge 77, Crawford Lodge 918 of the Supreme Council of the United States of Scottish Rite Masons, and Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.
He also served as a director of the YMCA. He was a member of the Texas and National Funeral Directors associations, as well as the Independent Funeral Directors Association of Texas. He was a deacon for 46 years and assistant Sunday school superintendent at Macedonia Baptist Church. He was the widower of Oneita Clydeus Curtis, whom he married in Denver.
Survivors include three sons, Roderick Curtis and Gregory Curtis, both of Denver, and Geoffrey Curtis of Arizona; one daughter, Dede Curtis of Dallas; one sister, Willie Curtis of Abilene; one brother, Samuel Curtis of Lubbock; and two grandchildren.

Alvin Ake
Alvin J. Ake, 74, died Tuesday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in South Side Baptist Church with the Revs. Steve Hardin and Mike Martin officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Mr. Ake was born in Mason County and served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Pearlene Jacobson in 1948 in Brady. He moved to Abilene 50 years ago from Brady and was a retired mechanic of Compton Corp. He taught Sunday school for 40 years and was a deacon and trustee at South Side Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, of Abilene; three daughters, Linda St.John of Haskell, Debbie Burton of Hodges and Carlene Crim of Abilene; two brothers, Herman Ake Jr. of Brady and James Ake of Abilene; three sisters, Lenora Sutton of Sweetwater, Fay Roberts of Brady and Nina Cottle of Mason; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Woodie Peables
Woodie Peables, 85, died Tuesday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory, with Mark Young and the Rev. Paul Hernandez officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Merkel.
Mr. Peables was born in Merkel and lived most of his life in Abilene. He was a police officer with the Sweetwater Police Department for three years and worked as a mechanic at The Tire Shop in Abilene. He was the widower of Lois Inez Richardson Peables, whom he married in 1935 in Abilene. He married Jean Patrick in 1987 in Abilene and was a deacon at The Lord's House.
Survivors include his wife, of Abilene; three sons, J.D. Peables and Raymond Peables, both of Abilene, and Woodrow Peables Jr. of La Feria; one stepdaughter, Shirley Albro of Abilene; one sister, Arzel Maurice of Comanche; 23 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Calvin Ainsworth
RANGER -- Calvin Ainsworth, 66, Eastland County Precinct 2 commissioner since 1990, died Sunday in an Abilene hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Eastside Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Speer officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, directed by Edwards Funeral Home.
Mr. Ainsworth was born in Gustine and attended school in Cheney and Young in the Ranger area. He married Jean Veal in 1950 in Mineral Wells and worked for Ranger Peanut Co. and R&R Fuel Co. until 1965. He then opened Ainsworth Dozier Service and operated it until 1990. He was a member of Eastland County Sheriff's Posse, Ranger Riding Club, Ranger Jaycees and Merriman Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, of Ranger; one son, Ronnie Ainsworth of Ranger; two daughters, Donna Driskill of Abilene and Delinda Butler of Gorman; his mother, Ruby Ainsworth of Ranger; three brothers, Frank Ainsworth of Warren, Ark., Floyd Ainsworth of Seward, Alaska, and Billy Ainsworth of Ranger; one sister, Lucille McGough of Ranger; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
