Henry Lowell 'Puss' Irwin

EASTLAND -- Henry Lowell "Puss" Irwin, 82, died Wednesday in an Abilene hospital.

The body will be cremated. A memorial service will be held in Borger at a later date. Arrangements are being made by Edwards Funeral Home.

Mr. Irwin was born in Corsicana and was a member of the first graduating class at Phillips High School. He served with the U.S. Navy's Seabees in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He then returned to Phillips and worked for Phillips Petroleum Refinery for 43 years until retiring as a shift foreman. He formerly lived in Borger. He moved to Eastland in 1986 and was the widower of Betty Louise Dunston Irwin, whom he married in 1941 in Pampa. He married Fern Dunston in 1992 and was a member of Phillips First Baptist Church, which later consolidated with Fairlane Baptist Church in Buena Vista.

Survivors include his wife, of Eastland; one daughter, Candy Bulla of Eastland; one stepdaughter, Tanya Howard of Austin; one stepson, Zane Dunston of Manvel; two brothers, K.S. Irwin of Amarillo and L.L. Irwin of Harlingen; one sister, Thella Jones of Caplin, Colo.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The body will be at the funeral home all day today.

Vernon Morris Lewis

COLEMAN -- Vernon Morris Lewis, 89, died Tuesday in a local hospital.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Gary Boyd and Hamp Linehan officiating. Burial will be in Coleman Cemetery.

Mr. Lewis was born in Guthrie, Okla., and attended school in Oklahoma. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and received a Good Conduct Medal. He married Faye Kinney in 1945 in Abilene. He moved to Coleman in 1945 and worked at the City of Coleman Light Plant. He was a life member of the Coleman Volunteer Fire Department and also was a member of the Auditorium Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, of Coleman; three sisters, Angie Moore of Midwest City, Okla., Pauline Windsor of Panama City, Fla., and Virginia Austin; and one niece.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Leonard Reed

LORAINE -- Leonard Reed, 96, died Tuesday in a local hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Kiker-Seale Funeral Home Chapel in Colorado City with the Rev. Sammy Elliott officiating. Burial will be in Champion Cemetery.

Mr. Reed was born in Rising Star and moved to Loraine in 1942. He was a retired truck driver. He was a Methodist and was the widower of Lou Mae Ussery Reed, whom he married in 1921 in Champion.

Survivors include four sons, Leonard Reed Jr. of Fort Worth, Lonnie Jean Reed of Loraine, Charles Reed of Eastland and Kenneth Reed of Roscoe; 20 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Hazel Mae Wilson

COLEMAN -- Hazel Mae (Mrs. Vernon) Wilson, 86, died Wednesday in a local hospital.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Coleman City Cemetery pavilion with the Rev. Bill Evans officiating, directed by Walker Funeral Home.

Mrs. Wilson was a homemaker. She moved to Rising Star in 1944 and returned to Coleman in 1970. She was the widow of Vernon Wilson, whom she married in 1929 in Coleman.

Survivors include one son, Wayne Wilson of Columbus, Ohio; three grandchildren; and one niece.

Annie Oleen Loden

Annie Oleen Loden, 75, who, with her husband, owned and operated The Gizzmotique, an antique business, since 1975, died Thursday at her home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Faith, 5701 U.S. Hwy 277 South, with the Revs. Steve Hardin and Mike Martin officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park.

Mrs. Loden was born in Ripley, Miss., and attended school in Tupelo, Miss. She moved to Abilene in 1951 from Marshall. She was a member of South Side Baptist Church and was the widow of Roy McCray "Ben" Loden, whom she married in 1940 in Tupelo, Miss.

Survivors include three daughters, Patricia George of Lubbock, and Regina Windland and Benje Campbell, both of Abilene; one brother, C.L. Cooley of Ozark, Ark.; and seven grandchildren.

Victor Carreno

Victor G. Carreno, 35, died Wednesday in a Lubbock hospital.

A wake service will be at 7 p.m. today in Allen-Korzenewski Funeral Home Chapel, 1443 N. 2nd. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Francis Catholic Church with the Rev. Joe Uecker officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Carreno was born in Mexico and moved to Abilene in 1981. He worked as a tent setter. He married Maribel Flores in 1986 in Abilene and was a Catholic.

Survivors include his wife, of Abilene; three sons, Victor Carreno Jr., Omar Carreno and Muriel Carreno, all of Abilene; one daughter, Naomi Carreno of Abilene; his parents, Victor and Felisa Carreno of Abilene; two brothers, Ernesto Carreno and Ruben Carreno, both of Oklahoma; and four sisters, Evelia Cruz of Lubbock, Elvira Romero and Olga Jimenez, both of Abilene, and Elena Zarate of Oklahoma.

Charles Potter Jr.

Charles A. Potter Jr., 74, Abilene school teacher for 29 years, died Wednesday in a local hospital.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Faith, 5701 U.S. Hwy 277 South. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park.

Mr. Potter was born in Fort Worth and graduated from Kermit High School. He attended North Texas State University and earned a master's degree from Louisiana State University. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and married Betty Walker in 1951 in Breckenridge. He was a principal in the Jim Ned school district in Tuscola from 1954-57. He then taught at Abilene High School until 1960 and Cooper High School until 1986 before retiring. He was a member of Retired Teachers Association and was a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, of Abilene; two daughters, Vicki Lee Uber of Clifton Park, N.Y., and Lorna Lyn Taylor of Abilene; one stepdaughter, Jay Carol Laney of Plano; one stepson, Lt. Col. LeRoy Weyrick III of Austin; and seven grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to American Diabetes Association, 8008 Slide Road, Suite 12A, Lubbock 79401.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

James 'Jimmy' Johnson

James M. "Jimmy" Johnson, 79, of the Abilene area, died Wednesday at his home.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Elmwood Memorial Park with the Rev. Caro Russell officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 U.S. Hwy 277 South.

Mr. Johnson was born in Lawton, Okla., and graduated from high school in Oklahoma. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He owned and operated A&A Siding Co. for 40 years. He married Shirley A. Winn in 1964 and moved to Abilene in 1977. He was a 32nd degree Mason and was a Shriner. He was a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, of the Abilene area; three sons, James Johnson Jr. of Houston, Bobby Keith Johnson of Abilene and Calvin Ross Winn of San Antonio; one daughter, Christi Lee Holcomb of Abilene; one brother, Junior Brown of Marlow, Okla.; one half-sister, Dorothy Scott of Duncan, Okla.; one stepsister, Velma Wood of Lawton, Okla.; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Joe Tiner

PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. -- Joe Tiner, 92, brother of two Abilene residents, died Tuesday in a local hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Newcomer's Overland Park Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Johnson County Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Tiner was born in Jones County and served with the U.S. Navy's Seabees in New Guinea and the Philippines during World War II. He moved to Kansas in 1951. He worked for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Co. for 40 years until retiring and then graduated from University of Missouri at Kansas City. He was a member of Unity Temple on the Plaza and was the widower of Helen Tiner.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Deane Hewett of Longview; one brother, Emmett Tiner of Fort Worth; three sisters, Edrie Buchanan and Edna Turner, both of Abilene, and Pauline Warren of Odessa; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Patsy Pike

BROWNWOOD -- Patsy Pike, 66, died Wednesday at her home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Union Presbyterian Church, directed by Davis-Morris Funeral Home.

Mrs. Pike was born in Brownwood and was a volunteer coordinator for Brown County MHMR. She wrote a grant, funded by the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, that started the Brown County Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, now Mid-Texas Council. She was the group's executive director until 1995. She started Project Graduation in 1990 for seniors at Brownwood High School, a Just Say No program for the Brownwood school district and the McGruff Project for Brownwood elementary campuses. She was a youth leader at Union Presbyterian Church and a church camp leader in Buffalo Gap.

Survivors include four children, Jack Pike, Patti Halladay, Paul Pike and Josh Pike; one brother, Clarence "Bud" Seed; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one aunt; one cousin; one nephew; and two great-nephews and one great-niece.

Memorials may be sent to Medshares Hospice, P.O. Box 2344, Brownwood 76804.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today in the funeral home.
