Fenton Smith
STEPHENVILLE -- Fenton Smith, 57, died Saturday at his home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Valley Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Warmerdam officiating. Burial will be in Gardens of Memory, directed by Stephenville Funeral Home.
Mr. Smith was born in Stamford and married Patricia Bean in 1962 in Lueders. He moved to Stephenville in 1978 and worked as a loan appraiser for the Farm Service Agency. He was a member of Stephenville Masonic Lodge and Valley Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, of Stephenville; four sons, Craig Smith of Lake Whitney, Monty Smith of Charlotte, N.C., Brian Smith of Comanche and Ernie Smith of Stephenville; his parents, Wayne and Dorothy Smith of Stamford; one brother, Wayne Smith of Big Lake; one sister, Tanis Hager of Paris, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

CARL HENRY PETERSON
Carl Henry Peterson, 97, a lifelong resident of the Ericksdahl community, died Saturday, January 30, 1999, at a local hospital.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ericksdahl with the Rev. Kent Wallace officiating. Interment will follow in the churchyard cemetery, directed by Tankersley Funeral Home of Stamford.
Mr. Peterson was born December 13, 1901, in the Swedish community of Lund, near Type, Texas, the son of C.J. and Clara Peterson, early-day immigrants from Ostergotland, Sweden. He came to Ericksdahl with his family at the age of five, attending school at Hastings and Avoca.
For a brief time in his late teen-age years he followed the life of a cowboy on the S.M. Swenson ranches and for a period in the early 1920s he and his father worked for Skelley Oil in the Burkburnett fields. Returning to Ericksdahl, he married his childhood sweetheart, Bernice Adella Swenson, daughter of Oscar and Amalia Swenson, on December 22, 1925. The couple entered farming, cattle raising and custom harvesting, a vocation he followed until retirement in 1975.
During his productive years he was active in community affairs and, along with fellow church members, took an on-hands part in the construction of the present-day church and parsonage. He was also active in obtaining rural electricity, telephone and Farm-to-Market roads in the community. In later years he was recognized as an historian on early-day cowboying and Swedish immigration to Jones County, being interviewed by Texas Tech University Press and the University of Stockholm, Sweden.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 53 years and also by a sister, Anna (Eric) Swenson, a grandson, Stephen Ross Elliott, and two nephews.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Arnold and Wilma Peterson of Round Rock, Texas; two daughters and sons-in-law, Yvonne and Ray Reves of Avoca and Doris and Buck Elliott of Abilene; one grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Alan and Audrey Peterson of Abbeville, South Carolina; two granddaughters and grandsons-in-law, April and Cy Barr of Alpine and Karen and Jesse Garcia of Ballinger; by two great-grandsons, Adam and Sam Peterson of Abbeville, South Carolina; two stepgreat-grandsons, Matthew Garcia of San Angelo and Nathan Garcia of Ballinger; by a niece, Selma Taylor of Texarkana; and a nephew, John Swenson of Stamford.
Pallbearers will be: Bo Hawkins, Tommy Taylor, Darrell Richards, John Jensen, John Bill Oman, Rondel Nauert, Mark Lundgren and Phil Swenson.
Honorary pallbearers will be: John Ed Youngquist, Kenneth Hansen, Melvin Rosenquist, Leland Nauert, Wilburn Jensen, David Ballard, Leroy Lundgren, Lester Seth, Milton Haterius, Rev. Clement Richards, Ross Gentry and Dave Reves.

Blas Hernandez
Blas Hernandez, 92, formerly of Sanderson, died Saturday at his home.
Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Cedar Hill Cemetery, directed by Abilene Funeral Home, 3349 N. 12th.
Mr. Hernandez was born in Palau, Coahuila, Mexico and lived in Sanderson from 1959-1996. He was employed by Southern Pacific Railroad for more than 40 years and was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Sanderson. He married Manuela Sandoval in 1930 in Del Rio; she preceded him in death.
Survivors include two daughters, Frances Ponce of Del Rio and Margarita Olvera of Abilene; one brother, Vicente Valasquez of Del Rio; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, five nieces and four nephews.

Avanell (Burnett) Stewart
EARLY -- Avanell (Burnett) Stewart, 80, died Saturday.
Services will be at 3 p.m. today at Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Hester officiating. Burial will be in Lost Creek Cemetery.
Mrs. Stewart was born in Hominy, Okla., and lived in May most of her life. She was a member of First Baptist Church in May for more than 60 years and was a former youth Sunday school teacher. She was employed by the May Independent School District for 15 years and was a homemaker. She married Logan Stewart in 1939 in May.
Survivors include her husband, of May; two sons, Billy Stewart and Troy Stewart, both of May; four brothers, Howard Burnett and Jerry Burnett, both of May, Edward Burnett of Bangs and Ira Lee Burnett of Waco; three sisters, Cozette Oaks and Inez Franklin, both of May, and Eloise Hopper of Brownwood; two nieces she raised as children, Dana Thompson and Theresa Ferguson, both of May; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

J.C. Bassett
DUBLIN -- J.C. Bassett, 94, died Saturday at a De Leon hospital.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Downing Cemetery in Downing with the Rev. David Roberts officiating, directed by Harrell Funeral Home.
Mr. Bassett was born in Downing and had lived in Dublin since 1954. He retired as a truck driver after 21 years with Taylor Harbin Gas Company. He was a member of Primitive Baptist Church. He married Hazel Kinnard in 1934 in Downing.
Survivors include his wife, of Dublin; two daughters, Wanda St. Martin of Dublin and Betty Phipps of Fort Worth; one son, Jim Bassett of Wheeler; one sister, Mary Corbell of De Leon; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Eva Britten Kinard
CISCO -- Eva Britten Kinard, 89, died Friday at an Eastland hospital.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Pleasant Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Poe officiating, directed by Kimbrough Funeral Home.
Mrs. Kinard was born in the Bluff Branch community and was a homemaker and a member of East Cisco Baptist Church. She married Kellie Lee Kinard in 1927 in Cisco; he preceded her in death.
Survivors include one son, Lee Kinard of Cisco; three daughters, Norma Janet Kerr of San Antonio, Eva Jo Hollis of Junction and Ida Loyce Cofer of Temple; 19 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Reba Britton Steffey
CISCO -- Reba Britton Steffey, 95, died Sunday at her home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church with the Rev. Donnie Price officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, directed by Kimbrough Funeral Home.
Mrs. Steffey was born in the Atwell community and lived in Eastland County all her life. She was a homemaker and a member of Order of the Eastern Star and First Christian Church. She married Fred Steffey in 1926 in Cisco.
Survivors include two sons, Fred Steffey of Grand Prairie and Frank Steffey of Fort Worth; two daughters, Mamie Ruth Wilcoxen and LaVerne Andrews, both of Cisco; eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 66 great-great-grandchildren.

Rev. Mitchell Bradford
Rev. Mitchell L. Bradford, 97, died Friday at a local hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Moriah Baptist Church with the Revs. John Mathis and L.W. Hutchison officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, directed by Curtis-Starks Funeral Home, 542 E.N. 7th.
Rev. Bradford was born in Natchitoches, La., and attended Bishop College. He moved to Abilene from Terrell in 1970. He was a minister for 56 years, retiring from Mount Moriah Baptist Church in 1985. He married Ethel Morris Bradford in 1935; she preceded him in death.
Survivors include three nieces and one nephew.
Memorials may be made to Mount Moriah Baptist Church, 518 N. 8th, Abilene 79601.
The family will be at the funeral home from 5-6 p.m. today.

Areceli Santiago, infant, died at a local hospital.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in Cedar Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Joe Uecker officiating, directed by Girdner Funeral Home, 111 Elm. A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. today at 1610 Burger.
Survivors include his mother, Lydia Ann Balladarez, of Abilene; his father, Arturo Santiago of Abilene; one brother, Joe Anthony Martinez of Abilene; a grandmother, Gloria M. Rivera of Abilene; a step-grandfather, Leo Federico of Abilene; and a great-grandmother, Frances Martinez of Abilene.
