Craig Batts
Craig Batts, 56, of Lakehills, died Monday, June 25, 2001, at his residence. He was born April 10, 1945 in Rocky Mount, N.C. to William Cooper Batts and Doris Logan Batts. He married Eva Moore on Aug. 4, 2000 in Lakehills. She survives. Mr. Batts was a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving 24 years. He was a member of the Lakehills American Legion Post 410, and helped coach Little League Baseball in Lakehills. In addition to his wife Eva of Lakehills, survivors include his mother, Doris Batts of Rocky Mount, N.C.; two daughters, Maria Tillotson and husband Niles of Orlando, Fla., and Laura Leith and husband J.B. of Houston; one son, Vincent Hubbard of Lakehills; two step-children, Brian Castrejana of Austin and Christina Taylor and husband Trey of Houston; one sister, Jolene Sykes and husband Charlie of Boston, Mass.; and two grandchildren, Justin Terry Leith and Kendall Leith. A private family interment will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Post 410, Lakehills, Texas 78063. Arrangements were under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.
Cleo (Deanie) N. Newman
Cleo (Deanie) N. Newman, born April 20, 1925 in Guide Rock, Neb. died Monday, June 25, 2001 at the age of 76 years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Richard B. Newman, one sister and two brothers. She is survived by her son, Ronald R. Newman and wife Betty of Austin, daughters Merldine Talley and husband Buster, Andrea Tondre and husband Ron of San Antonio; six grandchildren, Bryan Newman and Laura Dykes of Austin, Pace and Lana Talley, and Dustin and Shay Tondre of San Antonio; sisters, Dorothy Wheeler, Ilah Rea and Barbara Campbell; brother, Floyd Portman and wife Mary of Bandera and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Services were held Thursday, June 28, at Grimes Chapel with interment at Ft. Sam Houston Cemetery. A contribution may be made to Boysville of San Antonio or the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera. Delmeth C. Wood Sr. died Tuesday, June 26, 2001. He was born Sept. 18, 1910. He was one of 13 children born to Charles and Minnie Wood of Sullivan, Ill. Mr. Wood is survived by three brothers, Jack, Karl and Charles and one sister, Mabel; two sons, Clifford and Delmeth Jr.; three daughters, Lillian, Shaman and Madeline; and five grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Saturday, July 7 at the Lakehills United Methodist Church at 10 a.m.
Peggy Gray
Peggy Gray, 67, of Bandera, died Tuesday June 26, 2001 at her residence. She was born on June 20, 1934 in Nampomyon, South Korea to Il Kwan Paek and Kap Tong Yi. On Aug. 5, 1963, she married Jimmie Donald Gray in Seoul, Korea. He survives. In addition to her husband of Bandera, survivors include one daughter, Zale Gray-Wienecke and husband Jerry of Kerrville; three sons, Tommy Gray and wife Dawn of Kerrville, Lee Gray of Kerrville, and Neal Gray of Bandera; two sisters and one brother of Seoul, South Korea, and one grandchild, Katryna Gray of Kerrville. Services were held Saturday June 20 at Grimes Chapel, with Mr. Martin Smith officiating. A private family interment will be held at a later date.
Clem Haun
Clem Haun, 84, of Bandera, died Wednesday June 27, 2001 at his residence. He was born April 22, 1917 in Hye, Texas to Louis and Rosa Rech Haun. He married Annabelle Schandua who preceded him in death on March 20, 1988. Mr. Haun was a retired rancher and a member of the Farm Bureau. Survivors include three daughters, Rosalie Haun of Fredericksburg, Mary Ann Busbee and husband Donald of Bandera, and Linda Acord and husband Jerry of Kerrville; two sons, Clemens Donavan Haun of Bandera and Jerry James Haun and companion Lyn Hamilton of Kerrville; two sisters, Lillie Sultemeier of Kerrville and Dorothy Maurer and husband Bill of Kerrville; one brother, Arthur Haun and wife Cecilia of Fredericksburg; 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother. Services were held Saturday June 30, at Grimes Chapel, with Mr. Martin Smith officiating. Interment followed in Bandera Cemetery. Pallbearers were Randy Kalka, Thomas Callahan Jr, Weston Callahan, Timothy Methvin, Alvin Culak, Mickey Moellering, Matthew Merz, and Clemens Virgin Haun, III. Honorary pallbearers included Nicholas Moellering, Phillip Moellering, Lance Culak and Royce Kalka. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to CCRA, P.O. Jim Reid Jr.
Jim Reid Jr., 51, of Bandera died Thursday, June 28, 2001 at his residence. He was born March 17, 1950 in Rantoul, Ill. to James Edward Reid Sr. and Leila Mae Cook Reid. He married Janice Annette McMullen on March 27, 1994 in Kerrville. She survives. Mr. Reid owned and operated the Jim Reid General Contracting Company. In addition to his wife Annette of Bandera, survivors include his parents Jim and Frances Reid Sr. of Bandera and two sisters, Delores Adams and husband Lou of Granbury and Donna Bullard of Huntsville, Ala. Graveside services were held on Monday, July 2 at 2 p.m. at Bandera cemetery with Dr. Lou Abams officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera. Mendy Woods, 37, of Jacksboro, Texas, died Saturday, June 30, 2001 in a Ft. Worth hospital. She was born Sept. 12, 1963 in New Mexico to George and Gay Richardson Ogle. She was a homemaker and a member of the Jehovah's Witness. Survivors include the father of her children, David Woods of Bandera; her parents, George and Gay Ogle of Jacksboro; paternal grandfather Cecil Ogle of Jacksboro; maternal grandmother Iva Richardson of Jacksboro; daughter Tiffany Woods of Jacksboro; son David Woods of Jacksboro and sister Cynthia Ridgeway of Las Vegas, Nev. She was preceded in death by a son, Jonathan David Woods, in 1989. A private family interment will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.
Rev. J. Coleman Turner
Rev. J. Coleman Turner, 80, of Harper, Texas died Wednesday, July 4, 2001 at his residence. He was born Jan. 4, 1921 in Bolling Green, Fla. to Soloman Leonard and Nanny William Davis Turner. He had been a resident of Harper for 27 years. Rev. Coleman was a retired Baptist minister. He graduated from Howard Payne College in Brownwood, Texas in 1943 and Southwestern Bible Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth with a Master of Theology degree in 1946. He served in numerous Texas churches, including First Baptist Church in Sabinal, First Baptist Church in Llano, and Harper Baptist Church in Harper. He retired from full-time pastoral work in 1984. From 1984 until 2000, he assisted in the start of several churches, and served as interim pastor in numerous churches within the Medina River Baptist Association. Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Flo Ann and Rev. Ron Langley of Center Point; brother, Howard Turner of Carson City, Nev.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and dear friend, Cleo Meadows. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruby Faye and a son, Bert. Funeral services for Rev. Turner were held Saturday, July 7, at Grimes Funeral Chapels in Kerrville with Dr. Phil Tilden officiating. Graveside services were held at Tarpley Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Peterson Hospice, Christian Women's Job Corps, Adopt an Annuitant SBC or the Kerr County Pregnancy Crisis Center.
Norma Jean Anderwald
Norma Jean Anderwald, 78, of Bandera, died Thursday, July 5, 2001 at her residence. She was born on Aug. 2, 1922 in Ft. Worth to George M. and Lurlene Everett McGregor. She retired as a nurse from the Kerrville VA Hospital in 1980. Ms. Anderwald was a graduate of San Jacinto High School in Houston and of Hunter College in New York State. She was a lifetime member of the Kerrville Art Club and member of the Guadalupe Watercolor Group. She was also a member of the American Professional Allied Artists of New York City, Contemporary Arts Society of Houston, and Coppini Academy of Fine Arts and San Antonio Water Color Group. She was Artist of the Year in 1995 in watercolor for KAC. She won Artist of the Year in Sculpture at Coppini Academy in 1987. Professionally trained as a commercial artist, she practiced her trade and is still known for her magazine ads. She studied at the University of Houston, The University of Texas, Northwestern University at Chicago and other art institutes. She also studied watercolor under Zoltan Szabo and Susie Short. Her bronze sculpture, ³Monument to the Champion Cowboys of Bandera County² stands on the Bandera County Courthouse lawn. Ms. Anderwald was a member of the Bandera Church of Christ. Survivors include her daughter, Karen Hensley and husband Sam of Bandera; and two grandsons, Jeff Hensley of Orange, Calif., and Chris Hensley and wife Kati of Austin. Graveside services were held July 7, 2001 at Bandera cemetery with Mr. Guy Lowe officiating. Arrangements were by Grimes Funeral Chapel.
Edward Otto Markgraf
Edward Otto Markgraf, born Dec. 11, 1928 in San Antonio, died July 5, 2001 after a long struggle with Parkinson's Disease. "Legs" retired from City Public Service in San Antonio in 1987 where he had been employed for 33 years. He served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict. A resident of San Antonio for 60 years, he moved to Center Point in 1988. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Mildred Markgraf of Center Point; son Jeffrey Markgraf and wife Jackie; two daughters, Melinda Westerfield and husband Billy, and Sandra Medina; nine grandchildren, Jared and Jessica Markgraf, Brenda, Brian, Megan, Brad and Brent Westerfield and Eric and Veronica Medina; also two sisters, Eleanor Peterson and Talie Stover all of San Antonio. Rosary was held on July 8 at Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera. Funeral Mass was held July 9 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bandera with Father Leo Martinez officiating. Interment followed at the New Catholic Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Vista Care Family Hospice, 420 Water St., Suite 104, Kerrville, TX 78028.
Bill Erhard
Bill Erhard peacefully died on July 7, 2001 after a long fought battle with cancer. Bill lived in Bandera from the late 60s to the late 70s. He was a rancher and a heavy equipment operator, but he will mostly be remembered for the cartoons drawn on paper napkins which used to hang in any establishment that served coffee. Bill would come to town daily to have his coffee and while sitting at the table, out would come the pen and paper napkin. When finished with his coffee and out the door, there it would be, a new cartoon waiting to be hung by the cash register along with all the rest. I personally believe that was Bill's way of saying ³Okay, I've been here today and have a nice day,² said his daughter, Linda Decker. For all that knew and loved Bill Erhard, he will surely be missed.
Mary Ruth McEntee
A funeral mass for Mary Ruth McEntee, 76, of New Braunfels was held July 12, 2001 at St. Peter and St. Paul Church in New Braunfels. Officiant was Monsignor Eugene O'Callaghan. Born Mary Ruth Flanagan in Pennsylvania, Mrs. McEntee had lived for many years in New Braunfels following the medical discharge of her late husband, Col. Francis McEntee, who had commanded an infantry regiment in Viet Nam. She was a librarian for a time with Dow Chemical Company in the Houston area and later was associated with New Braunfels Public Library. She had graduated from Carnegie Tech and later earned a masters degree in library science from the University of Texas at Austin. Survivors are daughters Patricia and husband Patrick Tobin of San Antonio; Priscilla and husband Dennis Hamilton of Houston; Jane and husband David Coumes of Shanghai, China; daughter Deidre McEntee of Houston; and six grandchildren. Following the services in New Braunfels, the family accompanied the remains to Arlington National cemetery outside Washington, DC, where Mrs. McEntee was interred with her late husband with proper military honors. Before her marriage she had served as a lieutenant in the Woman's Army Corps.
Patrick W. Locklin
Patrick W. Locklin, 57, of Hondo, died July 14, 2001. He was born Sept. 28, 1943 in Bandera to Percy Locklin and Thelka Swartz Locklin. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served in Vietnam. Survivors include his wife, Mary V. Barella Locklin of Hondo; son, John Locklin and wife Elva of Bandera, daughter Patricia Quintanilla and husband Sergio of Hondo, five grandchildren, and two brothers, Jerry Locklin of Stephenville and Hale Locklin of Katy. Services were held July 19 at St. John's Catholic Church with Father Jeff Pehl officiating. Interment followed at Hondo Cemetery, Oakwood Section. Pallbearers were John Locklin, Jerry Locklin, Jerry Barella, Vincent Martinez, Sergio Quintanilla and Noel Ochoa. Arrangements were by Quinn-Horger Funeral Home in Hondo.
Curtis Anthony Bird Sr.
Curtis Anthony Bird Sr., 57, of Bandera, died Saturday, July 21, 2001 in a Kerrville hospital. He was born Nov. 18, 1943 in Freeport, Texas to Aubrey H. and Eleanor Winn Smith Bird. Mr. Bird was a retired Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy, member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, member of the Fleet Reserve Association/Disabled American Veterans, and a member of the Lakeshore Volunteer Fire Department, and L.M.S.O.A. Survivors include his wife, Mary E. Bird of Bandera; mother, Eleanor S. Bird of San Antonio; daughter, Kathryn Marie Bird of Albuquerque, N.M.; step-daughters, Mary Kathryn Robinson of San Antonio, and Elizabeth Lindsey Flores of Bandera; son, Curtis A. Bird Jr., of San Antonio; step-sons, Charles (Buddy) Jung of San Antonio, and John Robert Jung of Bandera; sister, Nancy Mellen of Whitehall, Ark.; three brothers, Charles Lee Borskey of Austin, Ben Smith Bird of San Antonio, and L. Ray Bird of San Antonio; five grandchildren; and 10 step-grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday, July 24, at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Matt Rowe and the Rev. Don Lee officiating. Graveside services were held Wednesday, July 25, at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ben Bird, Curtis Bird Jr., Ray Bird, Charles Lee Borskey, John Adams, Jerry Moore and Alan Bird. Memorials may be made to the St. Christopher's Episcopal Church Building Fund, Bandera, Texas. Arrangements were under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.
Lewis Lentz
Lewis Lentz, 80, of Bandera, died Saturday, July 28, 2001 in a Kerrville hospital. He was born Nov. 27, 1920 in Liberty Hills, Texas to Walter M. and Alma V. Rush Lentz. He married Sherri Ann Vaughn on Sept. 5, 2000 in Kerrville. She survives. Lentz retired from Hydro Conduit Corporation in 1984 after 41 years of faithful service. Mr. Lentz served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII, serving in the 219th Field Artillery Battalion in Central Europe, Rhineland, Ardennes, Northern France, and Normandy, holding the rank of sergeant. In addition to his wife Sherri of Bandera, survivors include three sisters, Dorothy Kizer of Austin, Laura Ann Masters of San Angelo, and Ellen Laverne Davis of McDade; three brothers, Walter B. Lentz of San Antonio, Rodney C. Lentz of Austin, and Milton R. Lentz of Van Alstyne, Texas. Services were held Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Grimes Chapel in Bandera, with Chaplain Jack Cook officiating. Interment was at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
Sarah Wheeler
Sarah Almeda Wheeler, 82, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, in a Schertz nursing home. Arrangements are pending and when completed will be announced by Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.
Pat Hazlewood
Pat Hazlewood, 61, of Bandera, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001 at his residence. He was born Oct. 31, 1939 in Elizabeth, La. to Judson and Jeannette Rogers Hazlewood. On May 3, 1986, he married Marilyn Just in Houston. She survives. Mr. Hazlewood served his country in the U.S. Navy for four years and was employed with Wyman Gordon Forgings in Houston for the past 38 years. In addition to his wife, Marilyn of Bandera, survivors include two step-daughters, Cathy Gantley of Houston and Angie Podsednik of Spring, Texas; three sons, Steve Hazlewood and wife Tami of Katy, Doug Hazlewood and wife Sarah of Katy, and Greg Hazlewood and wife Carmen of Katy; one step-son, Steve Martin of Cypress, Texas; three brothers, Gordon Hazlewood of Arkansas, Mike Hazlewood of Burnet, Texas, and Lonnie Hazlewood of Austin; and 11 grandchildren. Services were held Saturday, Aug. 4, at Grimes Chapel, with Reverend Wade Strother officiating. A private family interment will be held at a later date.
Blanche Edwards
Blanche Edwards, 83, of Pipe Creek, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001 in a Boerne care center. She was born June 28, 1918 in Rue, Penn. to Fred L. and Maria M. Cassuine Eaton. On May 5, 1951, she married Luther D. Edwards in Reno, Nev. He preceded her in death on Nov. 7, 1988. Mrs. Edwards was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Boerne Ward. She and her husband owned and operated a grocery store in California for some years. Along with her husband, she was the sexton of the Pipe Creek cemetery for many years. Survivors include five daughters, Blanche Langston and husband John of Pipe Creek, Neoma Burch and husband Phil of Walton, Calif., Nancy Ogan and husband Marvin of Backerville, Calif., Eileen Larsen and husband Larry of Pipe Creek, and Jo Mullenix of Pipe Creek; two sons, Gilbert Edwards and wife Shirley of Pipe Creek, and Luther Edwards Jr., of Pipe Creek; five sisters, Lucy Hill of Salt Lake City, Utah, Delores Waley of Anchorage, Alaska, Patricia Burton of Jonesboro, Ark., Ruby Williams and Pearl Brinkman of Fredericktown, Miss.; four brothers, Wesley Eaton of Brownsville, Calif., Thomas Eaton of Salt Lake City, Utah, Fred Eaton of Jackson, Calif., and David Eaton of Fredericktown, Miss.; 24 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Larry Eaton, and one grandchild. Services were held Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Grimes Chapel, with Bishop Vic Heller officiating. Interment followed in the Pipe Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers were her seven children. Memorials may be made to the Pipe Creek cemetery Association, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, and/or the Pipe Creek Volunteer Fire Department.
Walter R. Moses
Walter Raleigh Moses, 95, of Springfield, Va., died Aug. 10, 2001 at a care center in Annandale, Va. Mr. Moses, a native of Texas, was a 1930 graduate of Baylor University, where he received a master's degree in chemistry. He spent many of his early years in the Hill Country in Kerr County, Medina County and Tarpley. He taught school in Texas before joining the Food and Drug Administration as a seafood inspector in New Orleans in 1937. He transferred to Washington, D.C. in 1960. In retirement he did consulting work for such organizations as the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization. Mr. Moses was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Springfield and was elected president of the Springfield chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. A history buff, he had written articles on Texas history for a number of Texas Newspapers, including The Bandera Review, and for the Bandera County Historian. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Mae Beth Warren. Survivors include six children, Raleigh Warren Moses of Virginia, Anna Kay France of New York, Mary Elizabeth Dent of California, Homer Weston Moses of Illinois, Florence Helen Cadogan of Virginia and Frederick Cleon Moses of Alabama; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Irene Norwood
Irene Mary Britsch Norwood died in Madera, Calif. on Sept. 18, 2001. Graveside services were conducted in Hillcrest Memorial Park. She was buried beside her late husband, Steward Norwood. Mrs. Norwood was born in Hondo, Texas on Nov. 4, 1906 to pioneer Bandera County ranchers Gus and Ida Britsch. She is survived by two daughters, Mickie Gipe of Madera, Calif. and Idabelle Farr of Tarpley; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
