Estelle Buckley
Estelle Boatwright Donahoo Buckley, 93, died on March 9, 2002 in Bandera after a lengthy illness. She was born Jan. 7, 1909 in Llano. She is survived by a son, Truman Donahoo (Lt. Col. USMC Ret.) and wife Jeanine. She is also survived by a stepson, Gary Buckley; granddaughter Sherry Fulford and husband Jack; grandson David Donahoo and wife Pam; great-grandsons Scott and Brian Fulford; great-granddaughters Mallory and Lauren Donahoo and Taryn and Brittany Walker. Services following at 1 p.m. at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, March 14 at Fort Sill Cemetery, Lawton, Okla. Frankie Naney
Frankie Mae Naney, 80, died Saturday, March 9, 2002. She was born Nov. 15, 1921, in Avalon, Texas, to William B. F. and Willie Mae Gillespie. On November 18, 1939, she married Wilson Naney of Avalon, Texas, with whom she shared her life and her love for 59 years until his death in 1998. They brought up their two sons on a farm near Lorenzo, Texas, where they made their home for 31 years. Mrs. Naney is survived by two sons, Wade Naney of Bandera and Robert Naney of Avalon. She is also survived by two sisters, Margaret Ponder of Benbrook and Louise Craddock of DeSoto; two brothers, Bill Gillespie of Whitesboro and Wayne Gillespie of Irving; three grandchildren, James Naney and Susan Cheatwood of Avalon and Anne Jaynes of Bristol; and two great-grandchildren. Her parents and her youngest brother, Roy M. Gillespie, preceded her in death. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, March 12 by Pastor Royce Cockrell of Gateway Baptist Church under the arrangement of Scott Funeral Home of Gatesville, Texas, where she and Wilson lived for 16 years after their retirement. She was buried beside her husband at the Moffat Cemetery.
Florence Gray
Florence Lucille Wiemers Gray, born Sept. 21, 1916, in rural Medina County, died Mar. 10, 2002, at the age of 85 years. She married George Lee Gray on Jan. 19, 1935, in Bandera. Through the years she was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church, working with the United Methodist Women and singing in the choirs of the Bandera and Hondo United Methodist Churches. She was also a member of the Dietert Claim Choir of Kerrville, where she managed the Hill Country Apartments. She was preceded in death by her husband; infant daughter, Ethel Ann; parents, Johnny and Annie Wiemers; and brothers, Charles and Leroy Wiemers. Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Helen Marie and Wesley Robbins of Guymon, Okla., Carolyn Sue and Arlen Graff of Hondo; six grandchildren and spouses, Guy Wes and Barb Robbins of Guymon, Okla., Mark and Terry Robbins of Cedar Park, Sharon Robbins of Miami, Okla., Bill and Lynn Robbins of Guymon, Okla., Beverly and Richard Seals of Victoria, Neil and Stacy Graff of Dripping Springs; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Leora Castleberry and husband C.K.; brother, Claude Wiemers and wife Rose of Thicket; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. Funeral services were Tuesday, March 12 at First United Methodist Church in Hondo with Rev. Bill Nogues officiating. Interment followed in the Bandera Cemetery, Bandera. Arrangements were by Guinn-Horger Funeral Home, Hondo.
Raymond Howton
Raymond Howton died on March 10, 2002 at his residence after suffering a massive heart attack. He was born in Sabinal on June 6, 1940 and is survived by his wife Ellen Howton. He is also survived by sons Raymond Howton Jr. and wife Debra, Russell Howton, Jess Howton, Raymond Howton III and Jimmy Ray Howton and by daughters Marie and Jeremy, Misty and Matt and Ellen and John Morgan. Other survivors include brothers Bill Howton Sr. and Cheryl, Kelly Howton and Dixie, Harold Howton and Jesse Howton and Anna. He is survived by sisters Joyce Williams and spouse Roger, sister-in-law Mary Lynn Howton and former wife Connie Kelley as well as by 14 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bill Jenson
Bill Jenson, 70, of Bandera, died Monday, March 11, 2002 at his residence. He was born Dec. 19, 1931 in Loveland, Colo. to Fred and Mary Tyler Jenson. He was a very accomplished musician, playing the piano and the organ and he served his country faithfully in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. Survivors include two sisters, Dorothy Cary of Juneau, Alaska and Shirley Bliss of San Antonio; and two brothers, Harold Jenson of Ft. Collins, Colo. and Robert Jenson of N.M. He was preceded in death by four sisters and five brothers. A private family service and interment will be held at a later date. Arrangements were under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.
Kenneth Williams
Kenneth Lee Williams, 72, of Pharr, Texas, died Monday, March 11, 2002 in a McAllen hospital. He was born July 4, 1929 in Jasper, Texas to Christopher Lee and Velma Irene Bishop Williams. On Nov. 4, 1946, he married Mildred Opal Hargraves. She survives. He was a member of First Baptist Church of McAllen and a retired building contractor. He was much loved by all who knew him and he was a man who never gave up. In addition to his wife Opal of Pharr, survivors include three daughters, Vera Lee Tipton and husband Kenneth of The Woodlands, Texas, Diane McKnight and husband James of Baytown, and Marylin Kaye Hilton and husband Homer of Longview; two sons, Christopher Williams and wife Trudy of Pipe Creek, and Patrick Williams and wife Tammy of Pipe Creek; sister, Winnie Sue Folsom, three brothers, Utah Carroll, James Joseph and Mark Hugh Williams; and 11 grandchildren, Michelle and husband J.T. Turner of Pipe Creek, Lauren and Jacob Williams, Melody, Angela and Trisha McKnight, Jonathan Williams, Dwayne Johnson, Bobby Johnson, Kimberly Johnson and Tammy Jordan. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Gerald Dwayne and Stephen Anthony Williams; daughter, Robin Jan Williams; sister, Nonie Ann Williams; and brother Conrad Bishop Williams. Services were held Friday, March 15 at Grimes Chapel with Rev. Doug Johnson officiating. Interment followed in Pipe Creek Cemetery.
Betty Highnote
Betty Highnote, 73, of Bandera, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002 at her residence. She was born July 10, 1928 in Waxahachie, Texas to Morris and Doyle Hudgins Loftis. On June 28, 1974, she married Charlie Highnote in Mesquite, Texas. He preceded her in death on May 8, 1992. She was a retired customer service representative for an insurance agency, worked part time at Super S Foods, was a member of Lakeshore Volunteer Fire Department's Women's Auxiliary, serving in several different offices, and she was a very devoted and loving mother and grandmother. Memorial services were held Saturday, March 16, 2002 at Grimes Chapel with Rev. Ken Brown officiating. A private family interment will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Vista Care Hospice, 420 Water St., Kerrville, TX 78028. Arrangements were under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.
Johnnie Cogburn
Johnnie Lois Cogburn, 76, of Bandera died on March 14, 2002. She was born in Megargel, Texas on March 9, 1926. Mrs. Cogburn, her surviving children said, was a lifelong homemaker, 'a good mom, good caregiver and a very loving person.' She was preceded in death by daughter Donna Earlene and son Dennis Linwood. Survivors include a son, Fred (Rooster) Cogburn of Bandera, a daughter, Martha Glassy of Louisiana and seven grandchildren. Services were under the direction of Wright's Funeral Home in Bandera. Mrs. Cogburn was buried in the Bandera Cemetery following private services.
Lewis Polsey
Lewis Gene Polsey, 68, of Bertram died on Friday, March 15, 2002. He was born on Sept. 18, 1933 in Long Beach, Calif. to Abner L. and Florence Polsey. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of the Whitestone Assembly of God in Cedar Park. Mr. Polsey is survived by his wife Barbara Polsey of Bertram; children Glenn Polsey and wife Connie of New Orleans, La., Perry Polsey and wife Helga of North Pole, Alaska, Adrian Stanley of Yadkinville, N.C.; grandchildren, Charles Patrick and Patricia Polsey and Daniel Stanley; step-daughters Beverly Kitchens of Kerrville and Kimberly Bonnet of Bertram and step-grandchildren Nicole Smith, Kayla Kitchens and Joey Kitchens. Graveside services were on Tuesday, March 19 at 2 p.m. at the Liberty Hill Cemetery in Liberty Hill with Rev. Ned Smith officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Beck Funeral Home in Cedar Park.
Diane Crabb
Diane Sanchez Crabb, 52, of Bandera, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, in a Kerrville hospital. Mrs. Crabb, a resident of Bandera for two years and a prior resident of Center Point, was born Aug. 29, 1949, in Tahoka, Texas, to Joe Sanchez Sr. and Gloria Hernandez Sanchez. Mrs. Crabb was a Catholic and a housewife. Survivors include her husband, Mike Crabb of Center Point; two daughters, Gloria Brummeo and Marie Crabb, both of San Antonio; three sons, Kenneth Ray Crabb of San Antonio, Michael J. Crabb of Sugarland and Daniel Crabb of Bandera; a sister, Esperanta Harris of San Antonio; two brothers, Joe Sanchez of San Antonio and Angel Garza of Kerrville and numerous grandchildren. Graveside services were held Saturday, March 23 at Mt. View Cemetery in Kerrville. Arrangements were under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapels of Kerrville.
Paul Shiflet
Paul Shiflet, 80, of Pipe Creek died on Saturday, March 23, 2002 at Wilford Hall. He was born to Asa and Lottie Shiflet on Aug. 4, 1921 in Piqua, Ohio. He was a retired Master Sergeant from the U.S. Air Force. He retired in 1971 after 27 years. Mr. Shiflet was an avid golfer and supporter of Bandera ISD's athletic programs. He had purchased season tickets for the 2001 Bulldog football season although health problems kept him from attending. Survivors include his wife Madeline Shiflet of Pipe Creek, one daughter, Ann Edwards and husband Bob of Pipe Creek, one son, Billy Shiflet and wife Rickie of Hawaii, 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren from the states of Texas, California and Hawaii. Visiting hours are Thursday, March 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home at 6321 Bandera Road. Funeral services will be on Friday, March 29 at 1:30 p.m. at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home. Interment will be at Ft. Sam Houston. Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
Kathryn Dewoody
Kathryn Elizabeth Dewoody, 95, died at her home in Bandera on March 23, 2002, three weeks after learning that she had a brain tumor. She was born in Springfield, Ill., April 23, 1906, the only child of Bertha Newkirk and Glenn Allen Sheperd. As an infant, she moved with her parents to Texas where her father installed telephone systems for Bell Telephone Company. In 1924 she graduated with honors from Brackenridge High School, San Antonio. She then moved to Dilley where she met and married Alonzo Ward (Lonnie) Dewoody in 1929. He died in 1970. She loved sewing, gardening, and reading. She was an active member of Bandera United Methodist Church and the Bandera Fine Arts Club. Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Brient and husband Bill, and Ruth Hay and husband Ray Marvin, all of Bandera; grandchildren Bob Brient and wife Paulette of San Antonio, Jim Brient and wife Kathy of Missouri City, Tom Hay and wife Stacy of Bandera, Brenda Pope and husband Mark of Bellville; great-grandchildren Whitney, Evan, Jordan, and Jared Brient, Kevin and Alix Hay, and Alyssa and Alec Pope; and great-great-granddaughter Haley Brient. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, March 27, at the Bandera United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. with Rev. Dennis Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. in the Dilley Cemetery, Dilley, Texas. Her grandsons and great-grandson will serve as pallbearers. Memorials may be made to the Sid Peterson Hospice, Kerrville, Texas; Bandera United Methodist Church building fund or the Dilley Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.
Mickey Dubbs
Maxine 'Mickey' Dubbs, 72, of Bandera, died Tuesday, March 29, 2002 at her residence. She was born April 20, 1929 in Pine River, Minn. to Dale and Dorothy Rust Dubbs. She had lived in Bandera for the past 16 years and was a retired drug store assistant manager. Survivors include three brothers, Dale R. Dubbs of Seminole, Ala., Richard H. Dubbs of Kalispel, Mont., and Donald E. Dubbs of Bandera. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Delrose Dubbs who died on July 13, 1998. A memorial service and private interment will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel.
Maj. J.O. Hayhurst
Major Joseph O. Hayhurst, 71, of Pipe Creek, died Monday, March 25, 2002 in a San Antonio hospital. He was born Oct. 31, 1930 in Belton, Texas to Dr. Wendell Owen Hayhurst and Gene Fellraph Smith Hayhurst. On June 12, 1979, he married Charlotte Peterson in Las Vegas, Nev. She survives. He retired from the Army as a Major, received his Master's Degree in Anthropology from the University of Texas, and was a loving husband and father. In addition to his wife Charlotte of Pipe Creek, survivors include two daughters, Jill Hayhurst of Canada and Cynthia Stephenson and husband Barry of Louisiana; two sons, Owen W. Hayhurst and wife Kay of Pipe Creek, and Karl Hayhurst and wife Kristine of Killeen; and nine grandchildren. A private family service will be held later. Arrangements are under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.
John Kleibrink Sr.
John Kleibrink Sr., 80, of Pipe Creek, died Monday, March 25, 2002 in a San Antonio hospital. He was born Aug. 8, 1921 in Ennigerloh, Germany, to Heinrich and Elizabeth Quante Kleibrink. On Jan. 15, 1943, he married Mabel Harman in Hammonton, New Jersey. She survives. He served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corps, owned and operated Kleibrink Plumbing Shop in San Antonio for 50 years and he was a well known rock hound. In addition to his wife Mabel of Pipe Creek, survivors include one daughter, Ruth Hartmann and husband Richard of San Antonio; son, John Kleibrink Jr., and wife Rebecca of San Antonio; sister, Elsa Jordan of North Carolina; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Memorial services were held Saturday, March 30 at the Lakehills United Methodist Church with Rev. Ellen Ely officiating. A private interment will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.
Melba King
A former resident in Bandera County Melba King died this month in Kingsland, Texas. She was the wife of Joe King, who was principal of Bandera High School for many years. Mrs. King taught in the elementary school in Bandera when it was in the historic two-story building on what is now the middle school campus. Joe and Melba also owned and operated the the King's Ranch for Girls, a summer camp on the Medina River. After they sold the camp it became Camp Serendip and was active until after the 1978 flood. The Kings kept part of the camp property and developed a pecan orchard, known as Pecan Valley. Their pecans won many local and state awards. They retired to a home on Lake LBJ in Kingsland, Texas, and Melba was living in an assisted-living home there when she died. Survivors include two sons, Bryan and Joe and their families.
Dustin Gobert
Dustin Matthew Gobert, 15, of Utopia, died April 2, 2002. He was born April 20, 1986 to Matthew and Rhonda Gobert, of Utopia. Gobert is survived by his parents, sister Shelby Gobert of Utopia; brother, Cody Gobert of Utopia; paternal grandparents, Milton J. Gobert Jr. and wife Pat of Utopia; maternal grandparents, Mike and Susie Hammel of Dayton, Texas. He is also survived by paternal great-grandmothers, Mary Elizabeth Gobert of Utopia, and Gladys Jackson of McAllister, Okla.; maternal great-grandmother, Marie Brewer of Baytown, Texas; great-uncle Eddie Howard and wife, Debbie of Highlands, Texas; aunts and uncles, Valerie and Ernie Moore of Utopia, Monty and Shari Gobert of Boerne, Jason Brewer of Dayton, Justin Brewer of Dayton, Rob Hammel of Baytown, and Tony Hammel of Baytown; and numerous cousins. Services and interment were held Thursday, April 4, 2002 at Jones Cemetery in Utopia, and officiated by Bro. Jimmy Lynn. Honorary pallbearers were the Utopia Class of 2004; Utopia Boy Scouts; Utopia 4-H; Uvalde County Steer Showing Team; Utopia Golf Team; and many friends. Arrangements were by Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary of Uvalde.
Kimber Moore
Kimber Lynn Moore, 14, of Utopia died April 2, 2002. She was born Aug. 12, 1987 to Ernie and Valerie Moore of Utopia. Moore is survived by her parents, grandparents Milton and Pat Gobert Jr. of Utopia; great-grandmothers Mary Gobert of Utopia and Gladys Jackson of McAllister, Okla.; and sister Kelsey Moore of Utopia. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, E.H. and Frankie Moore; great-grandfather, Milton Gobert Sr.; and great-grandmother, Annie Merka. Services were held Thursday, April 4, 2002 at Jones Cemetery in Utopia. Interment was at the Vanderpool Cemetery with Bro. Jimmy Lynn officiating. Honorary pallbearers were the Utopia High School Class of 2005; her team mates on the volleyball, basketball and golf teams; and the Utopia Golf Association. Arrangements were by Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary in Uvalde.
Richard Patch
Richard 'Dan' Patch, 71, of Bandera died April 6, 2002 following a lengthy illness. A retired engineer who built a home near Bandera eight years ago, Mr. Patch was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his daughter Becky and son Lin. Mr. Patch is survived by Joanne, his wife of 35 years. Other survivors are daughter Dianne Heacock and husband Jack of Parker Colo.; son Dan Patch and wife Isabel of Center Point; daughter-in-law Nancy Patch of San Jose, Calif.; brother Jim Patch and wife Charlene of Houston; sister Wanda Blake of Seattle, Wash.; eight grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. Graveside services with full military honors are scheduled for Wednesday, April 10, at 1:15 p.m. in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, with Ron Travis officiating. A memorial service will be held at the Babcock Road Christian Church Saturday, April 20, at 4 pm.
