Bill Wilkerson
Bill Wilkerson, age 73, of Bandera, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002 at his residence. He was born Dec. 3, 1928, in Brady to Leo Perry Wilkerson and Selma Cleo Dunnam Wilkerson. He was a selfemployed carpenter, was a member of Twin Lakes Baptist Church, and had lived in Bandera County for the past 20 years. Survivors include his wife Theresa Wilkerson of Bandera, four daughters, Cleo Silva of Midlothian, Billie O'Keefe of Abilene, Perry Wilkerson of Abilene, and Talitha Ann Foster of Abilene; three sons, William Leo Wilkerson, Jr., of Marlin, Andy Wilkerson of Bandera, and John Wilkerson of Winters; one sister, Marie Frankie; one brother, Robert Wilkerson; 17 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Memorial services were held Saturday, Sept. 28, 10:30 a.m., Twin Lakes Baptist Church, with Mr. Jerry Kral and Grady Desmuke officiating. Interment will be held at a later date.

Lowell Winston Morris
Lowell Winston Morris, 79, of San Antonio, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002. He was born June 9, 1923, in Bandera County. He was the son of Robert Lafayette Morris and Eleanor Angeline Seale Morris who preceded him in death, as well as his brother Warren Morris. He was a sixth generation Texan. Mr. Morris served this country in World War II from 1942 to 1946 in the United States Army. He was a part owner of Aggregate Plant Products Company (APPCO) for many years. He is survived by his wife, Ina Burnett Morris; stepson, Michael Campbell and wife Debbie; stepdaughter, Alissa Campbell Bellows. He was buried Friday in Oak Rest Cemetery in Medina with military honors. Mr. Doyle Maynard officiating. Arrangements were with Porter Loring Mortuary.
Marie Essie Ward
Marie Essie Ward went to be with the Lord on Oct. 1, 2002, at the age of 87. Mrs. Ward died at the Tallahassee Community Hospital in Tallahassee, Fla. She is survived by her children, Jenny Cheng of Missouri, Cledia Fay Wilson of New York, Genita Crews of Phillipnes, Alise Chen of Taiwan, Pat Chong of Taiwan, Leah Dee Smith of California, Charles Christopher of Kansas, Ceisar Stonely of California and Venson Loe Christopher, Hawaii. Graveside services were held on Friday at Mission Burial Park South. Arrangements were made with Mission Park Funeral Chapels South.
Rein John Vander Zee
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Grimes Funeral Chapel in Bandera for Rein John Vander Zee, Sr., 74, who died at the family residence in Highland Waters near Bandera on Wednesday, Oct. 2. The Rev. Frank Pullin will officiate, and a special friend, David Gartner of Arlington, Va., will give the eulogy. A military service will be held this same day at 2:15 p.m. at Ft. Sam Houston. In lieu of flowers, Vander Zee requested memorials to a Hospice organization or charity of choice. Born in San Antonio on July 15, 1928 to Dan Vander Zee and Alice Elizabeth Thompson Vander Zee, Rein moved to Bandera in 1936 with his parents and brother, Harlan Dan, to reside in Highland Waters. Little brother, Jacob Russell, joined the family in November 1936. Their father, Dan, died in 1937. Rein attended Winan's Creek School prior to the county consolidation of schools, after which he attended Bandera Elementary School. His mother was a registered nurse and served in the United States Air Force during WW II, retiring with the rank of major. In the interim, when Rein was not attending high school at Texas Military Institute in San Antonio, he resided at Bandera with and was cared for by his Aunt Monnie, his mother's sister, the late Martha E. Enochs. With scholarships in football and basketball, he attended Schreiner Institute in Kerrville and the University of Arizona in Tucson before returning to San Antonio where he graduated from Trinity University. While attending Trinity, he met and married Dianna Salavatierra Stone. To this union were born a son, Rein John, Jr. in 1954, and a daughter, Lea Elizabeth, in 1960. From 1952 until 1954, Mr. Vander Zee was an agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, after which he served as an officer in the U. S. Navy from 1955 to 1959. While attending law school, Vander Zee worked for Senator Hubert H. Humphrey and along with other duties associated with the U. S. government, he served as assistant secretary to the majority in the Senate. After leaving Washington, D.C., he returned to Bandera, where he and his wife, Rita Crossen Vander Zee, made their home, and he had a private law practice in Kerr and Bandera counties. In 1978 he was elected Bandera County Judge, and served the county in this office from January 1979 through December 1982, during which time responsibilities were great due to the county's struggle to make repairs and recover after the disasterous flood of 1978. His retirement was spent in Highland Waters at his family's original residence. Survivors include his son, Rein John Vander Zee, Jr. of San Antonio; daughter, Lea Elizabeth Grisemer and her husband, Plan, of Corpus Christi; two granddaughters, Hannah Elizabeth and Julia Nichols of Corpus Christi; a brother, Russ Vander Zee of Bandera; two step-daughters, Carla Ann Barron of Bulverde and Carol Crossen Vail of Medina; and his loving companion and best friend, Jeanne Alice Wilson, along with a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Harlan Dan Vander Zee. Arrangements were under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.
John V. Petty
John V. Petty, passed away on Oct. 4, 2002, from complications of a stroke. He is survived by his mother, Elaine Hamm; his three sisters, Sherry Thomas, Brenda Petty and Jane Vega; one niece; five nephews; aunts; uncles and cousins. Mr. Petty was born on March 11, 1952, in Pasadena. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.
He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially in New Mexico. Mr. Petty will always be remembered for his sharp wit and hilarious sense of humor. His courage and strength of heart stayed with him to the end. Funeral Services were held Oct. 7 at Little Rock Church (Pipe Creek Presbyterian) in Pipe Creek, with Dr. John Strange and The Rev. Ray Powell officiating. Funeral Arrangements were entrusted to Vaughan's Funeral Home in Boerne.
Alvin Clarence (Buster) Bausch
Alvin Clarence (Buster) Bausch, 80, of Bandera, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, in a local care center. He was born May 26, 1922, in Bandera County to Henry A. and Adelia Hohenberger Bausch. On Nov. 29, 1953, he married Georgia Walker in Kerrville. Mr. Bausch served in the Navy during World War II and was a life long rancher and fence builder in Bandera County. In addition to his wife Georgia of Bandera, survivors include five sisters, Norma Hamilton of Bandera, Alma Bausch of Bandera, Ida Mae Kutzer and husband Rex of Yoakum, Alice Buck and husband Claude of Hugo, Okla., and Irene Steiler of Kerrville; one brother, Harold Bausch and wife Anna Faye of Bandera; sisters-in-law, Mildred Bausch of Bandera, Jessie Sides and husband Brady of Medina, Jean Walker of Campwood and Ruth Goetzel of San Antonio; step-daughter, Retha Anderwald of Bandera; step-son, Johnny Anderwald and wife Susan of Roswell, N.M.; four step-grandchildren, Danny Bowermaster of Bandera, Cody Lee Anderwald, Luke Henry Anderwald and Sarah Anderwald, all of N.M.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services were held Friday, Oct. 11, at Grimes Funeral Chapel with Mr. Martin Smith officiating. Interment followed in Bandera Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Vitas Hospice, 100 N. Elizabeth Williams, Ph.D
Elizabeth Ann Williams, 55, of Kerrville, passed away, Wednesday, October 9, 2002 at a San Antonio hospital. She was born to William and Alleen (Lehr) Williams on Sept. 7, 1947, in Jasper. Dr. Williams spent her life in the academic world.
She graduated from the University of Texas with her Ph. D in computer science. The first half of her career was doing research at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. The latter half was spent in the Washington D.C. area working as a research scientist for the Institute for Defense Analyses, a prime contractor for the Department of Defense. She was an active marathon runner and was an avid snow skier.
She was a member of the Annapolis Striders and various professional organizations, but her heart remained in the Hill Country and the Bandera Ranch where she grew up. She purchased ranchland adjoining the family Bar W Ranch and planned to retire there. The Bar W Ranch's family cemetery is now her final resting place. Dr. Williams influenced so many lives and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Her family includes her mother, Alleen Williams of Kerrville; three brothers, Glenn Williams of San Antonio, Karl Williams of Kerrville, and Rex Williams of San Antonio; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services were Oct. 12 at Notre Dame Catholic Church with Father Michael Boulette officiating. Interment followed at the Williams Family Cemetery in Bandera County.

Karolyn Mayhew
Karolyn Mayhew, 64, of Pipe Creek, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at her residence. She was born April 24, 1938, in Sheboygan, Wis., to Melbourne and Hazel Ashenbrenner De Zuarte. On July 9, 1955, she married William E. Mayhew in Niles, Mich.
Mrs. Mayhew worked in the nursing field for 30 years, was always an outgoing person, making friends with everyone and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She lived for her grandchildren and always had a happy outlook on life. In addition to her husband William of Pipe Creek, survivors include two sons, Michael J. Mayhew and wife Janet of Austin, and Bryan E. Mayhew and wife Cindy of Pipe Creek; sister, Darlene Currens of Rockford, Ill.; brother, Richard De Zuarte of Minneapolis, Minn.; and three grandchildren, Briana, Tyler and Jason Mayhew. Graveside services were held Monday, Oct. 14, at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, with Rev. Wade Strother officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Bridget Townsend
Memorial services for Bridget Townsend were held Tuesday, Oct. 15, at Grimes Chapel in Bandera. Graveside services will be held today, Wednesday, Oct. 16, 1 p.m. at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Yoakum. Ms. Townsend was born June 26, 1982, in Pasadena to David D. Townsend and Patricia M. Sawey Townsend. Bridget was a very deep, spiritual person, loved God, had aspirations of becoming a nurse, was a good listener, cared about elderly people and babies, had many good friends and saw no bad or wrong in anyone. Survivors include her mother, Patricia Townsend of Bandera; father, David Townsend of Oklahoma; two brothers, David Townsend of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Robert Townsend of New Orleans, La.; and numerous loving aunts, uncles and cousins. A memorial fund has been set up at Wells Fargo Bank in Bandera to help with expenses. Local arrangements are under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.
Frances Anderwald Doyle
Frances Anderwald Doyle, 79, died on Oct. 15, 2002, in San Antonio. She was born in Bandera on Dec. 10, 1922. She married Frederick Doyle on Dec. 30, 1943. Mrs. Doyle enjoyed keeping in touch with the military families she and her husband met throughout the years. She lived most of her life in San Antonio and loved gardening and her animals. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Lt. Col. Frederick C. Doyle (retired). She was also preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Helen Pickens McKandles
Helen Pickens McKandles, 80, of Bandera, died Sunday, Oct. 20, in a Bandera care center. She was born near Pipe Creek to Robert Edgar Pickens and Della Mae McCarthy Pickens on Nov. 11, 1921. Following graduation from Bandera High School in 1941, Helen was employed in civil service at Kelly Field during World War II, after which she cared for her mother until her death. Then she was employed by the Montagues at the First National Bank in Bandera. After the Montagues sold their bank, she accepted employment at First State Bank in Bandera, where she worked several years. In February of 1967, she married Elbert G. "Jack" McKandles at Bandera United Methodist Church. They enjoyed traveling and visited many places of interest, including New Zealand and Alaska. For many years they operated a resale business, Pecan Tree Store, in her family home on Hwy. 16 between Bandera and Pipe Creek. Helen had the ability to organize and promote rummage sales, and several local charitable organizations have benefited from her efforts through the years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, in January of 2000, and her parents. Survivors include one brother, Leroy Pickens and his wife, Eva Mae Hinds Pickens of Harwood, Texas; and many friends. Arrangements are under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.
Ann Aylsworth
Ann (Annie) Aylsworth, 79, of Pipe Creek, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, in Methodist Hospital in San Antonio. Mrs. Aylsworth was born in San Antonio on May 18, 1923. On July 16, 1976, she married Clark Aylsworth in San Antonio. He survives. She has had a great affinity with animals, especially horses, all her life. Over 20 years ago she developed one of the finest Clydesdale breeding stables in the USA, "Twin Creek Clydesdales." In the process she acquired hundreds of good friends all over the world. She died doing what she loved to do. Other survivors include a daughter, DeAnn Ellisor of Columbia, S.C.; a son, Jeff Drake and his wife, Anne, of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a brother, J.S. MacManus Jr. and wife Barbara, of San Antonio; a stepson, Clark Allyn Aylsworth; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 25, at 11 a.m., at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Bandera, with Rt. Rev. John MacNaughton, Episcopal Bishop of West Texas, Ret., officiating. Danny Ray Lipsey
Danny Ray Lipsey, 30, died Oct. 21, 2002, in Lubbock. He was born on July 13, 1972, in Albany, Ga., to James Lipsey and Norma Godfrey. He is survived by his father James Lipsey and mother Norma Lipsey Godfrey; two brothers, Michael Wade Lipsey of San Antonio and John Ryan Lipsey of Wash.; father, Danny Hudson; grandparents, Donald and Charlette Godfrey; two aunts, Brenda and Debbie Godfrey; one uncle, Lee Ray Godfrey; one sister, Donna Hans and husband Buddy; many nephews, nieces and cousins. He will be loved and missed by many friends and family. Visitation was held Thursday, Oct. 24, at Wright's Funeral Parlor. A memorial service was held Saturday, Oct. 26, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Helotes. All funeral arrangements were under the direction of Wright's Funeral Parlor of Kerrville.
William A. Stewart
William A. Stewart, 92, of Bandera, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, in a San Antonio Care Center. He was born Jan. 27, 1910, in Clarksville to Walter G. and Maude Self Stewart. On Aug. 27, 1931, he married Nancy Rosita Wilkins in Carlsvad, N.M. She preceded him in death on Sept. 6, 1991. Mr. Stewart was a retired oil well driller and had been a Bandera County resident for over 30 years. Survivors include his nieces, Dorothy Darden of Bandera, Juanita Zellars and her husband Guy of Odessa, Joanne Sampson and husband Joe of Tomball; nephews, Wendel Don Darden and wife, Jo, of Wascom, Guy Wilkins and wife Norma of Ogden, Utah, Ray Wilkins and wife Billie of Odessa; numerous grand and great-nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 26, at Grimes Chapel with Mr. Martin Smith officiating. Interment followed in Bandera Cemetery with Terry Darden, Patrick Grams, Randall Muster, Guy Wilkins, Matthew Darden and Nathan Muster serving as pallbearers. Mary Carpenter
Mary Carpenter, 76, of Pipe Creek, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, in a San Antonio hospital. She was born Nov. 23, 1925, in Mexia to Franklin David Nicholson, Sr., and Ella Joe Ruble Nicholson. On Jan. 23, 1949, she married Roy Carpenter in San Antonio. Mrs. Carpenter was instrumental in starting the Pipe Creek Presbyterian Church, was very active in Helping Hand, active in the Senior Citizens Center and she was a member of the Pipe Creek EMS Support Team. Survivors include her husband Roy of Pipe Creek; two sons, Steven Carpenter and wife Arlene of San Leon and Glenn Carpenter and wife Melynda of League City; twin sister, Jacky Buck of Bandera; and three grandchildren, Danna and Sam Carpenter and Kristie Cardin. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Franklin David Nicholson, Jr. Graveside services were held at Glenwood Cemetery in Beeville on Friday, Nov. 1, with Reverend Phineas Washer officiating. A memorial service was held on Friday, Nov. 1, at the Pipe Creek Presbyterian Church with Reverends Raymond and Becky Powell officiating. Memorials may be made to Pipe Creek Presbyterian Church, P.O. Paul Elbert Wheeler
Paul Elbert Wheeler was born June 4, 1916, in San Antonio, the second son of Carl F. and Mary Larman Wheeler. He died Oct. 29, 2002, in Bandera at the age of 86 years. Mr. Wheeler graduated valedictorian of Medina High School in 1933 and was a graduate of Palmer Chiropractic College, but did not pursue this career. He ranched and drove the school bus for 44 years. During this time he made a lasting impression on many children and young people. Elbert devoted his life to helping his many friends and thousands of poor and needy. He joined the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in early childhood and served as an Elder most of his adult life. He served as pastor of the Bandera church two different periods of time for a total of 25 years. Elbert never married and lived on the Wheeler Ranch at the head of the Medina River. Mr. Wheeler is survived by one sister, Laura Nelson of Temple; four nephews; four nieces; three sisters-in-law, Sally Wheeler, Lorayne Wheeler and Stella Wheeler; a host of other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Preston, Linden and Carl, Jr.; and one sister, Ella Calloway. Services were at Grimes Funeral Chapel Monday with Rev. Charles Renfroe, Rev. Gerald Evans and Rev. Jim Arnold officiating. The family requests memorials to Vista Care Hospice, 420 Water St., Suite 104, Kerrville, TX 78028. Mabel Cottingham
Mrs. Mabel Cottingham, 98, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at her residence in Bandera. On June 19, 1904, she was born near Whitson, in Coryell County to Minnie Toliver Williams and John F. Williams. She married Marvin D. Cottingham on Jan. 14, 1933, in Corpus Christi, where they resided until moving to Bandera in 1942. During the 1930s the Cottingham family owned Cottingham Sash & Door Company in Corpus Christi. Beginning in 1946, they were proprietors of Cottingham Lumber Company in Bandera until their retirement in the 1970s when they sold the business to Hevenors. Mrs. Cottingham was a devout member of the Church of Christ in Bandera, where she taught a Sunday School class for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, M.D., on Jan. 29, 1988; also by five sisters, Lillie, Jewel, Bill, Beulah and Dick; and two brothers, Chester and Henry Williams. Survivors include three sons, Jerry Cottingham and wife Marguerite of Vanderpool, Dr. James Cottingham and wife Annette of Corpus Christi, and Lon Cottingham and wife Martha of Kingwood; six grandchildren, Philip, Kenneth, Kathryn, Renee, Lara and Sara; three great-grandchildren, Zachary, Lilith and Emily; and two brothers, J.D. Williams of Midland and Freeman Williams of Gatesville. Funeral services were held Sunday, Nov. 3, at Grimes Chapel in Bandera with Mr. Martin Smith officiating. Interment followed in Bandera Cemetery with Thomas H. Keese, Ray Marvin Hay, Albert J. Ogren, Charles Green, Kenneth Cottingham and Robert Gulley serving as pallbearers.
Kayte Jane Rogers
Kayte Jane Rogers, 82, of Medina, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at a care center in Kerrville. She was born Dec. 29, 1919 in Provident City to Jimmie Ryan Sims and Bettie Orinda Newman Sims. In Houston on Feb. 24, 1948, she married Herman Rogers. Prior to moving to Medina in 1978, they resided in Lake Barbara where she was employed in food service in the Clute School District and he served as a municipal judge. After moving to Medina, Mr. Rogers was elected Justice of the Peace of Bandera County Precinct 3 and Mrs. Rogers assisted him with secretarial duties. They were affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He retired as Justice of the Peace in 1994 and passed away on March 20, 1997. Surviving Mrs. Rogers are a son, Gil Rogers and wife Doris of Medina; two sisters, Elizabeth Keating of Medina and Eunice Branscum of Louise; two brothers, Branch Sims and Lloyd Sims, both of Louise; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be today, Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m. at Grimes Funeral Chapel in Bandera with Brother Rodger Bonnet officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Rest Cemetery at Medina with Doug Watkins, Matthew Keating, Kimbeau Keating, Mac Rogers, Lindon Kelley and Randy Wall serving as pallbearers.
Arthur Haner
Arthur Haner, a Bandera resident since 1982, died in his sleep of heart failure at the age of 77. Mr. Haner was born and raised in San Antonio and served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. In the late 1940s he lived and worked in Bandera, where he played on the city softball team and served on the volunteer fire department. From the early 1950s until shortly before his retirement from Southwestern Motor Transport, he and his family lived in San Antonio. Mr. Haner was preceded in death by his parents, Celia and Don Haner; his brothers, Roland and William; and his wife of 44 years, Margaret Haner. His survivors include his daughters, Sharon Schafnitz and Cynthia Holt; granddaughters, Ronda Forsyth, Rebecca Holt and Kara Holt; and one great-grandson, Corey Forsyth. In lieu of flowers, please celebrate Mr. Haner's life by enjoying a hearty meal at your favorite restaurant or playing a full round of golf. Jocelyn "Peanut" Geer
Mrs. Jocelyn "Peanut" Geer, 51, a longtime resident of Helotes, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002. She was born Nov. 14, 1950, in San Antonio, the daughter of Jack and Joyce Phillips Sales. She was preceded in death by her father Jack Sales and nephew Marcus Jansen. Peanut is survived by her mother Joyce Austin and stepfather Ed; daughters Tammy McDonald and her husband Jimmy, Karen James and her father Donald James and Crystal Geer; brothers and sisters, Jackie Scharmann and her husband John, Rebecca Jansen and her husband Mike, Frank "Butch" Sales, Gene "Itsy" Sales and his wife Barbara, Golda Quipp and her husband Butch, Marshall Sales and his wife Tammy and Todd Sales; two grandchildren, Brittany Dawn McDonald and Lauren Jean McDonald; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 4, at Vaughan's Funeral Home, with Dr. David B. Vaughan officiating.

Harold C. Keslar, Jr
Harold C. Keslar, Jr., after a long illness of emphysema and congestive heart failure, went to our Lord's presence on all saints day at 8:40 p.m. on Nov. 1, 2002, at his residence, at the age of 65. He was born on March 5, 1937, in Union Town, Penn., to Harold Keslar, Sr., and Dorothy Jenkins Keslar. He married Doris Meyer on Sept. 3, 1965, at St. Marks United Methodist Church in San Antonio. Mr. Keslar and his wife own D&H Automotive in Lakehills. He loved to take care of the people of Lakehills because he thought they were wonderful people. He was a member of Lakehills United Methodist Church in Lakehills. Mr. Keslar is survived by his wife of 37 years Doris Keslar, Jr., of Lakehills; one son, Harold Keslar III and wife Susan of San Antonio; one sister, Joann Bussey and husband H.P. of San Antonio; five grandchildren, Kristi Bollinger of San Antonio, Josh, Amy, Scott and Tim Keslar all of San Antonio; one niece, Cindy Bussey of San Antonio; and one nephew, Duke Bussey of California; and many loved ones and friends will miss him. He is preceded in death by his parents Harold Keslar, Sr., and Dorothy Keslar. A memorial service was held Tuesday, Nov. 5, at the Lakehills United Methodist Church with Pastor Ellen Ely officiating the services. All funeral arrangements were under the direction of Wright's Funeral Parlor of Bandera.
Bobby Preston Weed
Mr. Bobby Preston Weed died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, in Ft. Worth TX. Mr. Preston was born Oct. 3, 1937, to Earl and Mellie Weed at home on a ranch in Bandera County. He attended Medina High School, Texas A&M University, received a master's degree from the University of Southern California and did doctoral work at the University of North Texas. He served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force and a captain with American Airlines, retiring after 31 years. At the time of his death, he was a member of All Saints' Episcopal Church in Ft. Worth and served on the Vestry, Senior Warden, Worship Commission, Diocesan Delegate and on the finance, personnel and facilities committees. Survivors: include wife Holly Hunter Weed of Ft. Worth; sons Michael Preston Weed of Atlanta, Ga., and Robert Hunter Hendricks of Ft. Worth; daughter: Sharon Weed Wicker and her husband Thomas of Carrboro N.C.; sister Charlotte Weed Jetton and her husband Jerry of San Antonio; nephews: Kevin Jetton and Keith Jetton, both of San Antonio, Robert Earl Weed of Kingman Ariz. and Lee Roy Weed of Temple; and niece: Trish White of Tyler. Requiem Eucharist and entombment in the All Saints' Episcopal Church Columbarium was held Nov. 8, 2002.
Gerald Alfred "Jerry" Willis
Gerald Alfred "Jerry" Willis, 67, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at his residence at Lakehills. He was born March 17, 1935, to Foy and Bernice Willis in Dexter, N.M. Jerry had resided at Lakehills for about 22 years and was a brick mason, having been in masonry business in and around Bandera County and San Antonio for over 35 years. Mr. Willis was a devout Christian, being an Elder and a faithful member of the Pipe Creek Presbyterian Church. He was also very active in the Walk to Emmaus. On April 20, 1984, in Pipe Creek, he married Joan Echols Caddel, who survives him. Other survivors include two sons, Billy Willis of Brownwood and Steve Smith of San Diego, Calif.; four grandsons, Adam, Zack and Lincoln Willis and Travis Smith; two sisters, Pat Freeman of Fort Worth and Glenda Garner of Tucson, Ariz.; two brothers, Ron Willis of Rowlett and Hugh Willis of Tucson; three step-children, Steve Caddel of Lexington, Ky., Sandra Martin of San Antonio and Dianne McHugh of Uvalde; and seven step-grandchildren, Katey and Jessie Caddel, Andrew, Alexa and Henry Martin and Ryan and Avery McHugh. He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Samantha Smith. Visitation was held at Grimes Funeral Chapel in Bandera Monday, Nov. 11. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 12, at Pipe Creek Presbyterian Church with Reverends Raymond and Becky Powell officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pipe Creek Presbyterian Church. Arrangements were under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapels of Bandera.
Etta Ruth Johnson
Etta Ruth Johnson died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at Hilltop Care Center. She was born on Aug. 24, 1951, in Bandera to Carl Johnson and Etta Baker Johnson. She worked as a nurse's aid at the state hospital in Kerrville. She loved country music and dancing. She is survived by her mother, Etta Johnson of Bandera; one son, Preston Lee Beggs of La Grange; two daughters, Ethel L. Burton of Hondo and Melissa Calloway of Bandera; two sisters, Jo Basse of Kerrville and Deedie Johnson of Bandera; four brothers, Robert Johnson of Junction, Carl Johnson of Sonora, Will Johnson of San Antonio and Leroy Johnson of Bandera; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Many friends and loved ones will miss her dearly. Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 15, at Wright's Funeral Parlor of Bandera with Pastor Martin Smith and Pastor Jack Cook officiating the services. Interment followed at Bandera Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Vista Care in Kerrville. All funeral arrangements were under the direction of Wright's Funeral Parlor of Bandera.
Janet Cave
Janet Cave, 55, of La Grange, formerly of Bandera, died Thursday morning, Nov. 14, 2002. She was born Nov. 22, 1946, in Kansas and resided for many years in Bandera. In 1966, she married Gary Ray Cave and they had three children. He passed away in 1994. Mrs. Cave was the organizer of the Bandera County Republican Women's Club, was elected Bandera County Republican Party Chairman and served on the county's Capital Improvements Advisory Committee. During her years in La Grange, she served as a volunteer with the Fayette County Animal Shelter and the Fayette County Republican Party. She is survived by three children, Amy Lynn Davis of Amarillo, Nathaniel Zachary Cave of Amarillo and Heather Joann Ammons of Midland; grandchildren, Russell Thomas Davis and Megan L. Davis; and long-time neighbor Allen Hatley of La Grange. Memorial services were held at her home near La Grange.

James W. Evans Jr.
James W. Evans Jr. (Jimmie), 80, of Bandera, died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002. He was born in San Antonio on Oct. 8, 1922, the grandson of Bandera County pioneer Amasa Clark and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio where he was a member of the ROTC. After high school he became a licensed pilot. He had a love of flying and aircraft and served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II from 1943-1946 in Australia and the Philippines and retired from Kelly Air Force Base Civil Service in 1979 after 38 years working in aircraft maintenance. During the time that he worked at Kelly Air Force Base he worked on various aircraft including the B-52 and C-5 and received many sustained superior service awards. Following retirement, he relocated to the family ranch in Bandera that he loved so much. Mr. Evans was preceded in death by his parents, James W. Evans, Sr., and Kitty Clark Evans. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be dearly missed as they remember the patience, gentleness and love he gave them all. Mr. Evans is survived by his wife of 59 years, Louise Sorrells Evans; daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Dave Nuth of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; son and daughter in law, Scott and Nanette Evans of Boerne; sister, Kathleen Eichman of New Braunfels; grandchildren, Kevin and Meredith Skipper and Alexandra Nuth and Austin and Wyatt Evans; great-grandchildren, Jonathon and Cody Skipper; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at Grimes Funeral Chapel in Bandera on Monday, Nov. 18, with Pastor Frank Pullin of the First Baptist Church of Bandera officiating. Graveside service followed in the Amasa Clark Cemetery located on Amasa Clark Road on the family ranch in Bandera. The family would like to give special thanks to the Bandera EMS staff and the emergency room and ICU staff at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital on Babcock Road in San Antonio for their valiant efforts. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Heart Association or the charity of their choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapel of Bandera.
Christopher Jacob Leal
Christopher Jacob Leal, 26, of Bandera, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, in Bandera. He was born Dec. 28, 1975, in Kerrville to Walter Jacob and Kathleen H. Brown Leal. Mr. Leal was employed as an engineer at the Bandera Electric Coop. And served in the Air Force Reserve. Survivors include his wife, Vicki Leal of Bandera; parents, Walter and Kathleen Leal of Bandera; grandparents Ruben and Jean Brown and Kay McKoy all of Bandera; daughter, Kirsten Leal of Bandera; son, Aiden Jacob Leal of Bandera; sister, Samantha Andreas and husband W.B. of Florida; two brothers, Steven Joseph Leal of Virginia and Robert James Leal of Bandera; and one nephew, Kobee Andreas. Services were held Saturday, Nov. 23, at Grimes Chapel, with Reverend Sheryl Owens officiating. Interment followed in Bandera Cemetery. The family received friends on Friday at the funeral home.
