Hilmar “Buster” Cowey, Sr.
Hilmar “Buster” Cowey, Sr., age 82, passed away on Friday, March 14, 2003. Funeral services will be held at Goetz Memorial Chapel on Monday, March 17, 2003 at 3 p.m. with Rev. Kevin Haug and Rev. Jim Price officiating. Interment with military honors under the auspices of the American Legion Post #245 will follow at Dugger Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday March 16, 2003 at Goetz Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 4-6 p.m.
Mr. Cowey is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Evelyn Schmidt Cowey; one son, Hilmar Cowey Jr. and wife Leola, two daughters, Lena Rohlf and husband Raymond, and Connie Reimer and husband James, seven grandchildren-Tammy Bargfrede and husband Rodney, Tray Rohlf and Shelley McCulloch, Barbie Cowey, Randy Cowey, and wife Michelle, Cindy Harvey and husband Jimmy, Cheryl Jordan and husband Larry, and Craig Reimer. The joy of his life came in his seven great-grandchildren, Caleb and Cameron Bargfrede, Kambri and Baily Cowey, Tyler Jordan, and Lindsei and Chase Harvey. He is also survived by his sisters Edna Mae Grimm and Jessie O’Shay and brothers Jake, James, and Herman Cowey, Sr. He is preceded in death by his parents Robert Cowey, Sr., and Helen Lange Cowey, his twin sister Hilda Mondin, and brothers Robert Cowey, Jr., Leroy Cowey, and Edward Cowey. Serving as pallbearers are Randy Cowey, Craig Reimer, Rodney Bargfrede, Jimmy Harvey, Larry Jordan, Caleb Bargfrede,Tray Rohlf and Hilmar Louis Mondin. Honorary Pallbearers will be Cameron Bargfrede, Tyler Jordan, and Chase Harvey.
Hilmar was born on March 19, 1920, in Gonzales County, but lived in and near Seguin since he was a small child. On Nov. 5, 1942 he married Evelyn Schmidt. One month later, Hilmar was drafted into the US Army and began his training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. After only a few months serving his country, he received an honorable discharge and returned to Seguin to begin his life with his new bride. They lived on a farm south of Seguin where he farmed the land. He eventually took a job as a carpenter and continued in this trade until the mid 1970s. In his retirement Hilmar enjoyed his grandchildren and his animals. He raised cattle, pigs, and poultry. His great-grandchildren became real joys to him and even as his body grew weak, when one of the great-grandchildren came by to see him, it would brighten his day. He enjoyed his life and truly loved his family, always giving them a hug and telling them he loved them. He has now gone home to be with the lord. Feliciana Hernandez of San Antonio, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2003 at the age of 88, in Seguin.
She is preceded in death by her husband Santiago Hernandez Sr., and daughters; Maria Elena De Luna from El Campo and Virginia Hernandez.
She is survived by her daughters Dominga H. Zapata and husband Alfredo of San Antonio, Toni Rodriguez and husband Gilbert of Karnes City, Juanita Martinez and husband Jesse of Seguin; son Santiago “Jimmy” Hernandez and wife Felipa of Seguin; brother; Inocencio Garcia of Houston; 31 grandchildren and 52 great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held 5-9 p.m., Monday, March 17, 2003, with a rosary recited at 7 p.m., at Palmer Mortuary. A funeral mass will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
Interment will follow at San Geronimo Cemetery.

Roland Willmann, 87, formerly of Seguin passed away Sunday, March 16, 2003 at his residence in New Braunfels. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5-9 p.m. at Zoeller Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 20, 2003 at Cross Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at Kingsbury Cemetery.
Mr. Willmann was born Aug. 7, 1915 to Louis and Elenora Willmann in Kingsbury, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his first and second wives Annabell Willmann and Anne Maurer Willmann; brothers Edgar and Hilmar Willmann and sisters Julia Schroeder and Estella Rabe.

Agnes McKay Baker
Agnes McKay Baker was born Nov. 25, 1912, to Claude Sanford McKay and Ella Gertrude Maddox of Guadalupe County, Texas, and died after a brief illness on March 22, 2003. She was a fourth-generation Texan, a lifelong resident of Seguin and a long-time member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church.
Mrs. Baker was always physically active, having played basketball and tennis among other sports, and had a lifelong fondness for swimming. She showed her artistic ability in many outlets, notably in several oil paintings that have long decorated her home. She had a soft spot for shrimp, which she enjoyed on frequent visits to Rockport on the Texas coast. She was also sharp of mind, regularly playing bridge and daily completing the Jumble puzzle in the newspaper, both right up to the time of her passing. She was a longtime member of the Seguin Study Club, the Lazy Daisy Garden Club, and a charter member of the Junior Shakespeare Club. She was a dedicated wife and a loving mother and enjoyed her role as both grandmother and great-grandmother.
A memorial service for Mrs. Baker will be conducted by the Rev. Ed Duhoney at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 28, 2003, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Seguin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to St. Andrew’s Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Chester J. McKay, and her husband of 64 years, Dudley D. Baker Jr.
She is survived by her two sons, Dudley D. Baker III and wife Katherine of Austin, and Jack C. Baker and wife Jan, of Seguin.
She is survived by eight grandchildren: Dr. Dudley D. Baker IV and wife Julie of Spring, Texas; Andrew K. Baker and wife Krista of Seguin; Mark C. Baker of Long Beach, California; Jack C. Baker Jr. and wife Julie of Dallas, Texas; C. Colin Baker and wife Shauna of Seguin; Ethan M. Baker, Spencer D. Baker, and Natalya V. Baker of Seguin.
She is also survived by great-grandchildren Dudley D. Baker V and Katherine E. Baker of Spring, Texas; great-granddaughters Sophie A. Baker and Phoebe R. Baker of Arlington, Texas; great-granddaughter Kaitlyn P. Baker of Seguin; and step-great-grandsons Erich M. Mundt and Willem J. Mundt of Seguin.

Suzanne Mehle Corder of Spring, Texas, passed away March 24, 2003 at the age of 36. She was born in Youngstown, Ohio.
She is survived by her husband, Bill; son Dylan; infant daughter Mehle Agnes Rose; father Doug Mehle; sisters Kathy O’Hare and Nettie Siegel; grandmother Esther Mann; in-laws Shirley and Bob Vela and Bill and Josie Corder II; sister-in-law Robin Franks and numerous nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts and cousins.

Patrick Gene Lafitte, of Seguin, Texas, passed away March 24, 2003, in New Braunfels, Texas. He was born Nov. 27, 1946, in Chicago, Ill. to Albert and Delores Lafitte. He is survived by his wife Betsy Catherine; father Albert Lafitte; daughters Helen Gail and Michell Catherine Lafitte. He was preceded in death by his mother Delores G. Lafitte.

He is survived by his wife Maria Garcia of Seguin; daughters Gracie Monclova and husband Rod of Seguin and Glenda Lopez of husband Alex of Seguin; son Jimmy Garcia Jr. and wife Patty of San Antonio; brother Guadalupe Garcia Jr. and wife Janie of Seguin, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Allan August Biegert Jr.
Allan August Biegert Jr., born Aug. 10, 1928 on what would become Randolph Air Force Base, passed away in Schertz on Wednesday, July 9, 2003 surrounded by his family.
Allan lived his whole life in the Schertz area where he and his family farmed and ranched. He had many interests including German singing and visiting with friends at his feed store in Cibolo until it closed in 1990.
He was a long-time director of Schertz Bank and Trust, following in the footsteps of his grandfather and his father. Allan married Ruby Meek in 1948 and they shared 54 years together.
He is survived by his wife Ruby of Schertz; children Gail Hyatt and her husband Bert of Schertz, Jiggs Biegert and wife Debra of Schertz, Brenda Sue Prestage and husband Jomel of Hondo; six grandchildren, Jason Allan Hyatt of San Antonio, Billy Hyatt and wife Amy of Universal City, Lee Allan Biegert of Sutherland Springs, Texas, Stacey Lynn Sharron and husband Neill of Marion, Breanne Nicole Prestage of Hondo, Kelly Jo Prestage of Hondo and one great-grandson Chase Anthony Hyatt of Universal City.
Allan was preceded in death by his father Allan H. Biegert in 1960 and his mother Agnes Habermann Biegert in 1986.
Visitation is scheduled from noon to 9 p.m., Friday, July 11 at Schertz Funeral Home with the family greeting friends from 6-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 12, at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Cibolo with Senior Pastor Brett Becker and Associate Pastor Willie Stratemann officiating. Frank Arthur Jimenez, age 85, of San Antonio, died Thursday, July 10, 2003.
He was a member of St. Henry’s Catholic Church. Mr. Jimenez was retired from Swift Independent Packers.
Survivors include his wife, Arlene B. Jimenez; brother, Theodore Jimenez, Jr.; six step-children and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary “Bea” Brown, 73, of Seguin, Texas passed away July 10, 2003.

She was born on June 20, 1930 in Luling, Texas the daughter of Lela Mae Daniels and Wilson Forrest Alexander. Mary worked in the textile industry for many years and retired from the service in 1992.
She was preceded in death by her parents, son Jimmy Len Brown and daughter Angela Laverne Brown.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, John “Jack” Brown; daughters Mary Kathleen and Laura Elaine Augusta; sons John Brown, Jr. and Wilson “Billy” Brown; grandchildren John Andrew Brown, Nichole Gil and Megan Brown; great-grandson Corey Brown; sisters Dorothy Westbrook, Evelyn Schulle and Francis Combs; brother Ben Alexander and numerous other family members.
We would like to thank all of the staff at GVNC for taking such good care of Mary during her final days.

Maria Juarez of Seguin passed away Saturday, July 12, 2003 at the age of 75.
While living in Mexico, she met and married Felix Juarez Sr. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Felix Juarez Sr; daughters Maria R. Moreno and husband Frank of Seguin; Maria D. Hernandez & husband Rogelio of Laredo; sons Antonio Juarez and wife Estella of Arlington. Francisco Juarez of Seguin, Porfirio Juarez & wife Maria “Angie” of Seguin, Juarez Jr. and wife Maria of Seguin, Juan Juarez of Seguin; sister Engracia Ramirez of Mexico; brother Cruz Ramirez of Mexico. Other survivors include 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Juarez is preceded in death by son, Porfirio Juarez and daughter, Carmen Juarez.

Daniel E. Tschoepe, 92, of Seguin passed away Sunday, July 13, 2003.

Mr. Tschoepe was born on July 15, 1910 in Guadalupe County the son of Fritz J. Tschoepe and Ida nee Harborth Tschoepe. On December 25, 1935 he married Barbeth Seekatz in New Braunfels, she passed away in 1988.
Mr. Tschoepe was retired from Seguin Savings, where he worked as a bookkeeper. He was a member of Cross United Church of Christ, Hermann Sons Lodge and the Seguin Lions.

John Anthony Puchot
John Anthony Puchot, age 55 of Seguin, passed away on July 21, 2003 in San Antonio. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday July 24, 2003 at Goetz Memorial Chapel at 2 p.m. with Rev. Ed Bilderback officiating. Mr. Puchot was born on April 9, 1948 in San Antonio, Texas to Alexander and Eleanor Vargas Puchot. For 16 years he served his community of Seguin working for EMS and serving several years as the Chief of the EMS. He attended Texas A&M University to study chemistry and was a devout Aggie. As a chemist he had two government patents. He attended Living Waters Fellowship. John was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who believed in family and above all loved his family. His hobbies included gardening, traveling, music, reading and cooking. He valued people and nature and did all he could to value each day making each day better and making each person’s life richer. Survivors include his wife of 30 years Gloria Puchot; daughters, Susan Pastrano and husband Carlos and Jennifer Puchot; granddaughter, Eleanor Puchot; brother, Alex Puchot; nephews, Raymond Puchot and Allen Puchot; several uncles, aunts and cousins; his loving poodle Sophie; We are grateful to the Lord for the love John had for his family and friends. Shelia Schubert Holt, age 62 of Seguin, passed away on July 22, 2003 in San Antonio. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at 4 p.m. at Lifegate Church with Rev. Robert Odom officiating. Interment will follow in San Geronimo Cemetery. Mrs. Holt was born on Sept. 20, 1940 in Driscoll, Texas to Herbert William and Norma Audrey Chuter Schubert. Gary Allen Gunckel
Gary Allen Gunckel of Seguin passed away Monday, July 21, 2003, in Seguin at the age of 44. He was born July 18, 1959, in Laredo.
Services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, July 25, 2003, at Goetz Memorial Chapel in Seguin with the Rev. Richard Carse officiating. Burial will follow in Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park.
A finish carpenter by trade, he was a devoted husband, son, father, brother and friend. He loved spending time with his family especially in the outdoors. He loved to fish, bowl and play all kinds of games. He was an avid Spurs fan, attending games with his wife’s family, and enjoyed watching golf on television. He loved his pets, especially the family dog Charlie. Known as a fun-loving man, he will be truly missed by everyone whose lives he touched.
Survivors include his wife, Deborah Jo Gunckel of Seguin; his father and stepmother, Larry Wayne and Jodi Gunckel of Bulverde; his children, Jennifer Joy and Lane Allen of Corpus Christi and Jessica Rae of Seguin; his brother, Forrest Gunckel and wife Janet of Seguin; his sisters, Cindy Curnel and husband Avery of Seguin and Terry Atkinson and fiance Chris Rasch of Seguin; his stepchildren, Matthew Scott of Panama City, Fla. and Sarah Scott of Seguin; a stepsister, Cathi Barnes and husband David of San Antonio; his grandmother, Helen V. Neumann of San Antonio; his mother-in-law, Georgia Banta of New Braunfels; a sister-in-law, Kathie Ninneman and husband Dennis of New Braunfels; a brother-in-law, Joe Banta and wife Wendy of New Braunfels; seven nephews; six nieces; and a host of other family members and close friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Schultz Gunckel.

Aphne Pattillo, 101, of Nixon, Texas died July 22. Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m., Wednesday, July 23 at Finch Chapel in Nixon.

Ida Dietert Renker Strey, 103, passed away one day before her 104th birthday in Seguin. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 26, 2003, at Emanuel’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Vayda officiating. Interment will be private. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, July 25, 2003, with the family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m. at Goetz Funeral Home. Mrs. Strey was born July 24, 1899 in Guadalupe County to August and Augusta Ruehle Dietert. She was preceded in death by her parents and husbands John R. Renker and Erhardt Strey, sister Ella Fostill, son-in-law, Lee Foreman and great-grandson Bret Foreman. She owned and operated Eloit Jane Beauty Shop for 50 years.
