Harriet Ina Chrisco, age 82, passed away Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003, in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Memorial services were held Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003, at St. Marks Lutheran Church in Corpus Christi, and will be at 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at First Baptist Church in Austin. Graveside services and interment will be 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at Riverside Cemetery in Seguin, Texas. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 2, at Goetz Funeral Home in Seguin, with family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m.
Harriet was born Feb. 26, 1921, in Seguin to Harry and Ina Forshage Schumann. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Sam Chrisco, and is survived by her three sons Pat, Mike and his wife Cherryl, and Tim Chrisco, and her five granddaughters: Melissa Smith, Michelle, Laura, Carly and Lacy Chrisco.
Harriet always radiated happiness and was a friend to all she met. She especially loved traveling. Whether it was across the county or across an ocean, she was ready to go. The Church was especially important to her; she was an active member and passionately involved wherever she lived. In Austin the foreign student mission and Sunday School Class were her favorite activities.
She was a loving mother to her sons. She delighted in sharing her life experiences with her granddaughters and reveled in their successes and growth.

SFC Claude Horton USA Ret., passed away Oct. 30, 2003 in Seguin.

Mr. Horton was born Jan. 2, 1930, in Harlen County, Ky.
Survivors include his wife Billie Sue Horton, three sons, three grandsons, three granddaughters, one great-granddaughter, three sisters, two brothers and several nieces and nephews.

John M. Henk
John M. Henk, age 72, of Seguin, passed away Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, in San Antonio.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Monday, Nov. 3, 2003, at at Goetz Memorial Chapel with Msgr. Gerald Hubertus officiating. Interment with military honors under the auspices of American Legion Post No. 245 in Seguin will follow at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park. Visitation will be 4-9 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, with the family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m.
Mr. Henk was born Oct. 15, 1931, in Zorn, Texas to Adolph and Elenora Meister Henk.
He was retired from the Guadalupe County Road and Bridge Department and was a veteran, having served in the United States Army and National Guard.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Allen and Roger Henk.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, LaVerne Henk; daughter, Judith Bernhard and husband Chris; sons, Donald Henk and companion Pauline Tillotson and Mitchell Henk; brothers, James Henk and wife Yvonne, Edward Henk and wife Dorrene, Leo Henk and wife Annie; sisters, Betty Jandt and husband Albert and Lucille Hehs and husband Merwin; grandchildren, Tiffany Niles and husband Michael, Nicole Walker and husband Randy, Bryan Bernhard, Kendra Chambers and husband Clayton, Derek Henk and wife Mandy, Sara Rudeloff and husband Will, Jonathan Henk and wife Bobbie Jo; 10 great-grandchildren and numerous other family members.
His six grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Juanita Jewel Anderson Harper
Juanita Jewel Anderson Harper was born in San Antonio, Texas on April 18, 1919.
She died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, at the age of 84 after a long illness.
She lived in San Antonio throughout her childhood and early adult life, graduating from Jefferson High School in 1937.
She worked for several years in the downtown San Antonio at Kress’ Department Store and for a short time thereafter at Randolph Air Force Base in Universal City, Texas.
She was married to Thomas V. Harper on Nov. 6, 1941, and they lived most of their adult life in Seguin, Texas until March of 2001, when they moved to the Fort Worth area to be near their son, Gary, and his family.
She is survived by her husband Tommy, son Gary, daughter-in-law, Laura, two granddaughters, Kelsey, 11, and Allison, 8, sister-in-law, Rose Ann Anderson, nieces Judy Perillo and Mary Ann Lightbody, and nephew, Michael Anderson.
Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, at the funeral home.
Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, at Sunset Memorial Park in San Antonio, Texas. In lieu of flowers you can make donations to Lion Hospice, 1816 Norwood Drive, Hurst, Texas 76054 in the name of Juanita Harper.

Maggie Sue Jones, 84, changed her place of residence Oct. 28, 2003.
She will now join her husband, Hubert Jones Sr., who preceded her in death last year.
She was a faithful member of Penticoastal Temple COGIC before her illness. Her memories will be cherished be her two sons, Hubert Jones Jr. (Robin) of Houston, Texas and Bonnie Ray Jones of Corpus Christi, Texas and three nieces of Corpus Christi, Texas, Lena Coleman, Vernell Edwards and Martha Ray Anderson.
She is also survived by eight grand children and 10 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003 at Unity Chapel Funeral Home in Corpus Christi.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 3, 2003 at St. John First Baptist Church.

Elsie Charlotte Stautzenberger Felder
Elsie Charlotte Stautzenberger Felder, 90, passed away Nov. 1, 2003, in Seguin, Texas.
She was born April 26, 1913, in Kingsbury, Texas.
She resided in Kingsbury with her husband, Lloyd Felder.
Elsie was preceded in death by her parents Louis and Christina Stautzenberger of Kingsbury, sisters Rosie Richter, Pauline Stone, Mary Van Loon, Julia Schultz and brothers Henry E., Walter, Leonard, Henry L. and Eugene Stautzenberger.
She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years Lloyd Felder, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews and great-great-great-niece.
Elsie worked at the Seguin Creamery, was a telephone operator in Dallas and New york, a longtime waitress, an artist and a pilot in the United States Air Force during World War II (1941-43). She was a member of the WAACS and charter member of the World War II Women’s Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Elsie was a Methodist. Funeral service was Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at 10 a.m. at Kingsbury United Methodist Church.
Internment was in San Geronimo Cemetery in Seguin with an Air Force two-man flag ceremony and taps.
The Rev. Woodfin G. Howeth IV, Elsie’s great-great-nephew, officiated the services.
Pall bearers were Francis Frederick, Woodfin G. Howeth IV, Bill Harborth, Sam Hollida, Harold Watts and Arthur Trost.

Roselyn S. Gerdes, age 78 of Austin died peacefully on Nov. 5, 2003, at the North Austin Medical Center in Austin. A memorial service will be held at the United Christian Church, 3500 West Parmer Lane in Austin, Texas at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov., 8, 2003, with Pastor Tim Tutt officiating.

Roselyn was born March 22, 1925, near Seguin. A fourth generation descendent of pioneer Texas Families who helped settle the Texas Hill Country. She moved to Austin in 1969. She loved her family, friends and church. She practiced her faith journey in loving participation in her church and life. She was a charter Member of the United Christian Church. She loved music, singing in the choir, involvement in many programs and capacities in the church. She was a member of Church Women United in Austin. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Arlon J. Gerdes, her parents, Rudolph R. and Wanda Haas Reimer and brothers, Leslie and Danwood Reimer. Survivors include, daughter, Rebecca Ann Medrano and husband Florencio of Kyle; sister, Evelyn McLean and husband John of Jefferson, brother Rudolph R. Reimer of New Braunfels and several nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren. Rose Hubertus
Rose Hubertus passed away on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, at the Eden Home in New Braunfels at the age of 97.
She was born Jan. 15, 1906, in Comal County to William Hubertus and Bertha Tschoepe Hubertus.
For several years she worked as a housekeeper for her brother, Rev. Bruno Hubertus at St. James Catholic Church in Seguin. Rose was a past member of the Danville Home Demonstration Club, Council of Catholic Women at St. James Catholic Church in Seguin and a past member of St. Ann’s Circle at St. James Catholic Church in Seguin.
Rose is survived by her brother, Frank Hubertus of New Braunfels and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews and one great great great nephew.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Joachim, Paul, Rev. Bruno and Othmar Hubertus; two sisters, Helen and Agnes Hubertus.
Visitation will be 3-7 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003, at Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home in New Braunfels. The visitation will continue from 8-9 a.m., Monday. A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, Nov. 11, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in New Braunfels, where she was a long time member. Celebrants will be Monsignors Albert Hubertus, Gerald Hubertus and Edward Bily. Entombment will follow the funeral mass at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Mausoleum.

Hilario Astran, age 84 of Seguin, passed away Nov. 6, 2003. Funeral Mass was conducted at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with the Rev. Jack Kilburg officiating. Interment with military honors under the auspices of American Legion Post 245 followed in Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Cemetery. Mr. Astran was born Jan. 16, 1919 in Luling, Texas, to Esmerenciana and Gavino Astran. He served in the United States Army in 1945 and was retired from SMI.
He is survived by his wife, Josefina Young Astran; daughters, Velia Villanueva, Alicia Astran, Minerva Mendez, Gloria Lattin and husband David, Diane Young, Letty Cervantes and husband Robert and Sylvia Young; son, Daniel Astran and wife Beatrice; brother, Victor Astran; sister Rufina Ramirez; 21 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren;

Grace S. Guzman
Grace S. Guzman went to live with the Lord Nov. 5, 2003, at the age of 79. She was born Sept. 21, 1924, in Austin to Rebecca (Gutierrez) and Antonio Sifuentes. She had resided in Houston and San Antonio. She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Guzman; son, Robert A. Garza; daughter, Linda G. Garza; and brother, Antonio G. Sifuentes.
She is survived by her son Richard M. Garza and wife Mary and daughter Linda S. Guzman of San Antonio.
She is also survived by four sisters: Bertha S. Cantu, San Antonio; Orie S. Manchaca and husband Manuel, Austin; Angie S. Ziegler and husband Henry, San Antonio; and Rachel S. Gorham, Seguin. Also five brothers: Roy G. Sifuentes and wife Kay, California; Horace G. Sifuentes, Nebraska; John Joe G. Sifuentes, California; Rudy G. Sifuentes, San Antonio; and Ramiro G. Sifuentes and wife Karen, Arizona; and five granddaughters, five great-grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.
Funeral services were held Nov. 10, 2003, in San Antonio and interment followed at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
Harley Millar
Harley Millar passed away Nov. 9, 2003, in Seguin.
He was born Dec. 4, 1922, in Canada to George and Gouville Millar.
He served in the Canadian Special Forces during WWII and did general contracting work for the United States military. He is preceded in death by his brother Hubert Millar. Survivors include his wife Mary “Jean” Millar of Seguin; son Jeff Millar of Austin; daughters Gail Naughton of Seattle, Wash., Misty Dorak of San Antonio and Rebecca Matthews of Garner, N.C.; grandchildren Ki and Tia Dorak, Ashley Matthews and Nadia Barrera and siblings Reggie Millar, Glenda Millar, Della Height, Mavis Morin, Leonard Millar, Raymond Millar, Velma Pelletier and Melvin Millar all of Maniwaki, Canada.

James Edward Scruggs
James Edward Scruggs went to be with Jesus on Nov. 11, 2003, Veterans Day, at the age of 92. He was a devoted husband and a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Jimmy was a disabled veteran and proudly served his country during World War II as a medic. He was the first medic to arrive in Italy to provide care to the wounded. He was a servant to his Lord, Jesus Christ, and was a Deacon for 40 years at the Kingsbury Baptist Church, where he loved all the members of the church.
He was a “Spurs fan” and also played baseball with the Texas Rangers.
His loving and devoted wife Dorothy Scruggs survives Mr. Scruggs. He is also survived by daughters Vicky Cornelius and husband Rick, Sue Scruggs, Jo Nelle Scurto and husband Mike and Carolyn Collins and husband Dave and by sons Ronnie Salaica and wife Diane and Jon Salaica.
He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, especially his very loving nephew Elton Arnett, and very special family friend Lou Ann Norton.
Visitation will be 6-9 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at Palmer Mortuary. A funeral service will be 10 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, at Kingsbury Baptist Church, in Kingsbury, Texas. Interment will follow in Kingsbury Cemetery.

Roland Walter Avenell
Roland Walter Avenell passed into the presence of his Lord on July 26, 2003. He was born in Winnipeg, Canada to Bertrand Sydney Avenell and Emily Thomas Avenell on Jan. 16, 1910. He came to the United States with his parents as an infant.
Roland married Ruby Lucille Gaither on July 22, 1933, and they were together happily for 70 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.
Roland is survived by his wife, Ruby Gaither Avenell; sisters Marjorie Avenell Peters of Manvel, Texas, and Janelle Avenell Paris of Huntsville, Texas; one son, Paul Roland Avenell and wife, Daia of Houston, Texas; and a daughter, Barbara Gordon and husband Howard of Seguin, Texas. He had five grandchildren: Kimberly Avenell Linker and husband Johnny of Spring, Texas; Steven Avenell and wife Denise of Magnolia, Texas; Mark Bilbo of California; Timothy Bilbo and wife Alice of Elgin, Texas; and David Bilbo and wife Michelle of Port Neches, Texas. His great-grandchildren are Paul David Linker, Tyler Avenell, Zane and Makayla Bilbo and Alexandria Rocha. He is also survived by various nieces and nephews.
Roland was very active in the assemblies in Houston throughout his married life, serving as an elder in the Pineview Bible Chapel for many years. He spent many years preaching the Gospel and serving meals on holidays at the Star of Hope Mission in Houston, and also counseling and teaching at Cedar Hill Bible Camp and Sandy Creek Bible Camp.
In recent years, Roland and Ruby resided in Cut N Shoot, Texas, where he served as a mentor to his family members as well as many other friends. His knowledge and understanding of the Scriptures was second to only a few in this world.
We, who stay behind, sorrow at his home-calling, but as believers we can only rejoice in the fact that he is now serving his Lord in Glory. Many times he was heard to say that the first thing he wanted to do when reaching Heaven was to shake the hand of the Lord and gaze upon His nail-pierced hands.
We will celebrate his joining his Lord at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, at Forest Park-Lawndale Cemetery, 6900 Lawndale, Houston, Texas.

Dr. Ray “Doc” Gerhardt passed away Nov. 10, 2003, in Seguin. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m., Friday, Nov. 14, 2003, at Emanuel’s Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Vayda officiating. Interment will follow at San Geronimo Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-9 p.m., Thursday, with family receiving friends 5-7 p.m. at Goetz Funeral Home. Verdie Arlene Hummel
