Don Hawthorne dies in Silsbee
SILSBEE – Don Lee Hawthorne, a leading force behind the Hardin County airport – which bears his name – died Wednesday at his home in Silsbee. He was 50.
Commissioners Court in 1980 named the airport Hawthorne Field to honor Hawthorne, chairman of the airport committee, for his work in developing the facility.
Hawthorne also was head of the county sheriff’s department reserve deputies, assistant director of civil defense for Hardin County and director of civil defense for the city of Silsbee.
He worked with the county on numerous projects, taking “the bull by the horns” and really getting the airport project started, said County Judge Ray Martin. He was a pilot and flew his own plane, Martin said.
Hawthorne was also credited with being most responsible for the county’s civil defense program, said Martin.
“It will take three people, at least,” to fill the shoes of Hawthorne in civic affairs, Martin said, terming his death a “real loss to the community.”
A native of Kirbyville, Hawthorne lived in Silsbee for 34 years and was the fleet manager for Silsbee auto. He was an Army veteran, a Baptist and a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge.
Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. today at First Baptist Church with burial in Resthaven Cemetery under the direction of Farmer Funeral Home.
Hawthorne is survived by his wife, Emma Lou; three sons, Don of Monroe, La.; Joe and Jerry Hawthorne, both of Silsbee; two daughters, Sharion Richards of Texas City and Katy Ridgeway of Houston; three brothers, Frank of Porter, Buck of Hearne and Lenox of Silsbee; two sisters, Winona Lumpkin and Selma Fairchild, both of Kirbyville; and five grandchildren.

KIRBYVILLE – Funeral for Dorman Gene Hawthorne Sr., 51, of Kirbyville will be at Causey's E.E. Stringer Funeral Home with burial in Bean Cemetery.
He died at 9:35 p.m. Wednesday at Methodist Hospital in Houston after an illness.
A lifelong resident of Kirbyville, he was an auto mechanic and a veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include two daughters, Donna Odell of Lumberton and Darlene Maricle of Geary, Okla.; three sons, Gene Hawthorne of Kirbyville, Kenneth Hawthorne and Roger Hawthorne, both of Buna; and four grandchildren.
Hawthorne, Elliott
Elliott Hawthorne, 83, of Houma, La., died Thursday at his residence.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Zion Hill Cemetery under the direction of Forest Oaks Funeral Home in Jasper. Visitation will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Roganville Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Leola Peoples Hawthorne of Houma; son, Harvey E. Hawthorne of Houma; daughter, Terry Dianne Douglas of Harrisburg, Penn.; brothers, Edward Hawthorne of Vidor, Eston Hawthorne of Orange and Arthur Jack Hawthorne of Brookeland; sisters, Alice Spillars of Lake Jackson, Olnie Sheffield of Roganville, and Zelma Morgan and Elsie Armitiage, both of Kirbyville; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Hawthorne, Frances Putnam Hawthorne Sr.
KIRBYVILLE (Spl) – Graveside services for F. Putt Hawthorne Sr., 95, of the Hawthorne community near Roganville will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in the Wilkerson Cemetery in Newton County. Elmo Withers, an elder in the Primitive Baptist Church, will officiate. The Causey-Stringer Funeral Home of Kirbyville is in charge of arrangements.
The body will remain at the family home until time for the services.
Hawthorne died about 2 p.m. Wednesday in his home after a long illness.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a Baptist. He was a farmer, a stockman and a member of a pioneer family of the Kirbyville area.
Surviving are five sons, Harry, Austin, Johnny and Frank Hawthorne, all of Kountze, and Madison Hawthorne of Pasadena; one daughter, Mrs. Mildred Keates of Jasper; 19 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.
Hawthorne Jr., Francis Putnam “Putt”
Francis Putnam “Putt” Hawthorne Jr., 87, of Kountze died Friday, January 27, 1995 at Beaumont Regional Medical Center.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Farmer Funeral Home in Silsbee with burial at Old Hardin Cemetery in Kountze. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today at the funeral home.
A native of Kirbyville, he lived in Kountze 44 years and was a retired section foreman with Santa Fe Railroad.
Survivors include wife, Hazel Beatrice Hawthorn of Kountze; daughters, Jackie Allen of Kountze, Brenda Kay McNeill of Lufkin and Linda Kay Westbrook of San Angelo; son, Hugh Donald Hawthorn of Fayettville, Ga.; sister, Mildred Yeates of Lufkin; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He died at 1:15 p.m. Thursday at Mary Dickerson Hospital in Jasper after an illness.

KIRBYVILLE – Funeral for J.C. Hawthorne Jr., 63, will be at 2 p.m. today in the United Methodist Church with burial in Bean Cemetery under direction of Causey’s E.E. Stringer Funeral Home.
Hawthorne died at about 4:30 a.m. Monday in his home after a sudden illness. A lifelong resident of Jasper County, he was a security guard at the Kirby Lumber Co. plywood plant near bon Weir and formerly operated a store and service station.
Hawthorne, a member of a pioneer family in Southeast Texas, and was a former member of the Kirbyville City Council and the Kirbyville School Board.
Survivors include his wife, Trudie Hawthorne; two sons, Roger and Gary Hawthorne, and two daughters, Martha Rodgers and Jeanie Hawthorne, all of Beaumont; three brothers, Robert Hawthorne of Newton, Willie Hawthorne of Beaumont and Ray Hawthorne of Kirbyville, and two sisters, Annie Wilson of Vidor and Rosie Cady of Beaumont.

SILSBEE – Funeral for J.T. Hawthorne Jr., 64, of Silsbee will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Farmer Funeral Home with burial at the Friendship Cemetery in Roganville.
Hawthorne died at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Baptist Hospital in Beaumont after an illness. He was a native of Kirbyville and lived in Silsbee 36 years. He was a retired heavy equipment operator for the state highway department.
Survivors include his wife, Irene Hawthorne; two daughters, Wanda Nevills and Jeanelle Scoggins, both of Silsbee; a son, Terry Hawthorne of Silsbee; his mother, Amanda Hawthorne of Kirbyville; five sisters, Estelle Davis of Medford, Ore., Sybil McHaney of Montgomery, Chee Lee Wall of Beaumont, Mickey Shelton of Houston and Versie DuMont of Keithville, La.; a brother, James Hawthorne of Kirbyville; and 10 grandchildren.

Prominent Roganville Pioneer Survived by 350 Descendants

Joshua Timothy Hawthorn, 85, one of east Texas' most prominent pioneers, died at his home at Roganville, following a month's illness.
"Uncle Tim," as he was known to his friends, was born in Decatur, Ga., February 2, 1849, but moved to Texas at the age of 8 years and has been a Jasper county resident ever since. This is the first death to occur in his immediate family despite the fact that he was the father of 14 children and now has about approximately 350 descendants. He has been a member of the Primitive Baptist Church for the last 45 years.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Friendship near Roganville. Elder S.D. Newton of the Primitive Baptist Church at Orange will officiate. Burial will follow there under the direction of the Stringer Undertaking Company of Jasper. He is survived by his wife, Mary; eight sons, F.P., J.C., J.T., Sion and Walter of Kirbyville. Polk, Tommie, and Zora of Roganville. six daughters. Mrs. H.C. West of Kirbyville, Mrs. D.A. Jones and Mrs. J.N. Martin of Roganville. Mrs. U.M. Hooks of Bleakwood, Mrs. C.S. Day of Newton and Mrs. Earl Norberg of Ashland Ore; 184 grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren.

KIRBYVILLE – Ludie Turner Hawthorne, 84, of Kirbyville died at 7 a.m. Monday at Schlesinger Geriatric Center in Beaumont.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Central Baptist Church with burial in Zion Hill Cemetery under the direction of Causey’s E.E. Stringer Funeral Home in Kirbyville.
She was a lifelong resident of Jasper County.
Survivors include three daughters, Aline Kelley of Beaumont, and Martha V. Morgan and Marcelle Conlin, both of Orange; four sons, Polk Hawthorne Jr. of Silsbee, Carroll Hawthorne of Fort Worth, Amos Hawthorne of Lufkin, and Hollis Hawthorne of Gladewater, Texas; 23 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

Lula Hawthorne, 86, of Kirbyville died October 29, 1996 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont.
Funeral was held Thursday, October 31 at E.E. Stringer Funeral Home in Kirbyville with burial at Wilkinson Cemetery in Newton County.
A native of Farrsville, she lived in Kirbyville most of her life and was a retired cafeteria worker for the Kirbyville Independent School District.
Survivors include daughters, Doris Marie Williams of Kountze and Cecil Frances Barrow and Mary Jane “Janie” Travis, both of Kirbyville; sister, Lela Cole of Buna; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great grandchildren.

Mae Hawthorne, 92, of Port Arthur died December 16, 1996 at Gulf Health Care Center.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Levingston Funeral Home in Groves with burial at 2 p.m. at Friendship Cemetery near Jasper. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
A native of Diboll, she had lived in Port Arthur 54 years.
Survivors include her husband, Zora Hawthorne of Port Arthur; daughters, Mary Lou King of Broaddus and Doris Ostrander of the Woodlands; sisters, Annabel Stringer of Orange, Bernice Ledet of Sour Lake, Johnnie Hawthorne of Kountze and Corine Hamilton of Albuquerque, N.M.; brothers, J.C. Fairchild of Athens; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Roganville. Funeral services for Mrs. Mittie Hawthorne, 79, of Roganville, will be tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Zion Hill Baptist Church.
Rev, Elmo Withers, pastor of the Antioch Primitive Baptist Church, will officiate. He will be assisted by Rev. Jessie Thomas, a Baptist minister.
Burial will be in the church cemetery under the direction of Causey's Stringer Funeral Home of Kirbyville.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Hugh Beaver, Harvie Hawthorne, Ronnie Hawthorne, Douglas Hawthorne, Max Lee Hawthorne, Kerry Hawthorne, Robert Armitage and Dennis Hawthorne.
The body was moved to the Hawthorne home today at 2 p.m. and will remain there until tomorrow at 1 p.m. when it will be moved to the church.
She died today about 2 a.m. in Jasper hospital following a long illness.
She was a native of Jasper County and had lived all her life in Jasper County. She was a member of the Antioch Primitive Baptist Church.

Robert Hawthorne, 88, of Newton died Sunday, March 19, 1994 at Jasper Memorial Hospital in Jasper.
Funeral was held Monday, March 20, at Smith Funeral Home in Newton with burial at Wilkinson Cemetery in Newton.
A native of Roganville, he was a lifelong resident of the Newton area and was a retired farmer.
Survivors include wife, Rosie Hawthorne of Newton; son, Benton Hawthorne of Newton; sisters, Annie Wilson of Evadale and Rosie Cady of Beaumont; three grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Rosie Mae Hawthorne, age 90, of Newton died on Friday at Shady Acres Nursing Home in Newton. Funeral services will be on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Newton with burial to follow at the Wilkinson Cemetery. Visitation will be on Saturday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. She was a native and lifelong resident of Newton. Survivors include one son, Benton Hawthorne of Newton; three grandchildren and ten grandchildren.

Sion Campbell Hawthorne, 63, of Kirbyville died Tuesday, November, 15, 1988 in California.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Kirbyville Memorial Funeral Home in Kirbyville.
A lifelong resident of Kirbyville, he was a construction worker.

Joint Services for Kirbyville Residents Slated For Today
KIRBYVILLE (Spl) – Kirbyville woman died about 3:15 p.m. Monday of a heart attack as funeral directors were preparing to take her husband’s body to a cemetery for burial.
Mrs. Mineola Turner Hawthorne, 62 (72), was stricken at the family home just before the body of her husband, Walter Hawthorne, 75, was to be placed in the hearse. An attending physician said she suffered a heart attack.
Dies in Hospital
Hawthorne died Sunday morning, {September 7, 1965} in a Houston hospital.
Joint funeral services for Mr. and Mrs. Hawthorne will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Zion Hill Cemetery north of Kirbyville on U.S. 96.
Elmo Withers, elder in the Primitive Baptist Church, will officiate. The E.E. Stringer Funeral Home of Kirbyville will direct the services.

Mrs. Hawthorne was born in Magnolia Springs and was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church of which her husband was an elder.
Survivors of the couple are four sons, Frank Hawthorne of Houston, Walter Hawthorne of Hearne and Lenox and Donald Hawthorne, both of Silsbee, and two daughters, Mrs. Selma Fairchild of Kirbyville and Mrs. Winona Lumpkin of Port Arthur.
Mrs. Hawthorne is survived by one brother, Albert Turner of Jasper, and two sisters, Mrs. Ludie Hawthorne of Roganville, Mrs. Mittie Hawthorne of Kirbyville.
Hawthorne is survived by five sisters and four brothers.

Walter Valton "Buck’’ Hawthorne, 83, of Hearne died Sept. 22, 2001.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Phillips Episcopal Church in Hearne with burial at Norwood Cemetery under the direction of Heartfield Funeral Home in Hearne.
A native of Kirbyville, he was a construction supervisor for several pipeline companies and a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. He worked as a telegraph and telephone lineman for Texas Pipeline Co. and was owner and manager of Brazos Contractors Inc.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita Beard Hawthorne of Hearne; sons, Ray A. Hawthorne of Franklin, Tenn., and William E. "Billy’’ Hawthorne of Colmesneil; daughter, Mary E. Dobbs of Anchorage, Alaska; brother, Lenox Hawthorne of Silsbee; sisters, Wynona Lumpkin of Spring; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Willie Hawthorne, 77, of Kirbyville died Sunday, July 17, 1988 at Kirbyville Community Hospital.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Causey’s E.E. Stringer Funeral Home in Kirbyville with burial in Magnolia Springs Cemetery.
A native of Jasper County, he lived in Beaumont 43 years before moving to Kirbyville nine years and was a retired automotive machinist.
Survivors include his wife, Reba Daugherty Hawthorne of Kirbyville; a brother, Robert Hawthorne of Pine Grove; and two sisters, Annie Wilson of Evadale and Rosie Cady of Beaumont.
