McCreight, Dr. W.F.
August 4, 1961
The following news item appeared on the front page of the Friday, August 4, 1961 edition of The Kirbyville Banner. Kirbyville is saddened, stunned by double blow Nearly half a century of service to Kirbyville and East Texas ended early Sunday morning for Dr. W.F. McCreight, 75, a practicing physician who will be long remembered as a genuine “family doctor,” one of the last of the old “sawmill doctors” and as a “doctor’s doctor.” Dr. McCreight had delivered an estimated 5,000 babies since opening practice in Kirbyville August 26, 1912 after graduation from the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston. He died about 3 a.m. Sunday at his home in the presence of his partner, Dr. J.T. Moore, and his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. W.F. McCreight, Jr. He had been stricken by a heart attack Saturday afternoon while attending open house at the Pineland Clinic with Dr. Moore. The fatal seizure struck at about 2:30 Sunday morning. He had favored a heart condition – although he scoffed at retirement – since an attack late in 1959.

Funeral services – further saddened by the shock of the death of B.B. Boyette at the cemetery – were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church of Kirbyville. While attending graveside rites for Dr. W.F. McCreight on Monday afternoon at Kirbyville Cemetery, Bernard B. Boyette, 51, Kirbyville State Bank president, was stricken by a heart attack which proved fatal within a few minutes. Emergency treatment was administered by Dr. John T. Moore and Dr. McCreight’s son-in-law, Dr. A.B. Brown of Crockett. Funeral services for Mr. Boyette were conducted Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Kirbyville Methodist Church. Burial followed at Kirbyville Cemetery. Born near Kirbyville, Mr. Boyette was the son of Mrs. Lula Boyette and the late N.J. Boyette. A graduate of Kirbyville High School, he attended Sam Houston state College where he was a letterman in Football, basketball, and baseball. He played semi-pro baseball for a time, and he became one of the area’s most avid sports fans.
