Gary D. Freeman
1948-2003
Gary D. Freeman, 55, was killed in a helicopter accident while working in Kaho'olawe, Hawaii. Gary was born in Burleson on February 12, 1948. He graduated from Burleson High School in 1966 and went to Weatherford College, receiving a degree in aviation. Gary started flying when he was 16. He flew in Vietnam in 1969 as a scout. After leaving the U.S. Army he worked as a firefighter, but he couldn't live without flying. He began flying again and flew for WFAA Channel 8 in Dallas in the 80's where he worked for eight years. He then went on to work in New Guinea and Nepal flying helicopters for the Nepalese government. He later rejoined his old army pals and began flying in Hawaii where he worked transporting food, fuel and other supplies to the island. He also flew in California in early 2002 fighting fires. A memorial service was held on Tuesday, May 27 in Burleson where family and friends remembered Gary. Channels 8 WFAA, 5 KXAS and 4 FOX remembered him with a helicopter fly-by at the service. Gary was preceded in death by his father, John D. Freeman. He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Cindy Jetton Freeman; sons, G. Dolpha Freeman II and Chandlor Freeman; mother, Jennie Rascoe; grandmother, Sybil Ray; brother, Jimmy Freeman and his wife, Judy; sisters, Dixie Batten and her husband, Rusty, and Nancy Echols and her husband, Roy; and a host of nieces and nephews, Tina, Deanna, Johnny, Jenna, Talon, Laura, Clint, Steven and Jake.

WALTER G. FRENZ
1914-2003
Walter G. Frenz, 89, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 25, 2003. He joins his wife of 63 years, Margaret Simons Frenz, who preceded him to Glory on May 26, 2002. Born on April 22, 1914, in Brooklyn, New York, Walter was the son of the late Thomas W. and Dorothy Frenz. He graduated Jamaica High School in New York and went on to a successful career in printing in New York City. He spent many years with Kipe Offset, and prior to retirement in Charlotte, North Carolina, Walter was an Estimator for over 17 years with Case Hoyt company in New York City and Charlotte. The family expresses gratitude to the staff and residents at Covenant Place in Burleson for their care and companionship to Walter in recent years. Walter was a Missouri Synod Lutheran all his life and continually served in various capacities within the church, including as a Sunday School Teacher who led several of his students to serve in the ministry in their later years. He was one of a small group that began a mission church, Our Savior Lutheran, in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, which grew steadily over the years to be of considerable size and influence. His most favorite leisure time was spent with his wife playing golf and also traveling the United States together. Thomas W. Frenz is Walter's surviving brother and resides with a loving family in Long Island, New York.. In addition to his brother, Mr. Frenz is survived by his two loving daughters, Carol Egan of Charlotte, North Carolina and Gail Garratt of Burleson; three granddaughters, Kathleen Palumbo, Margaret Cusimano and Tracy Baker; and six great-grandchildren, Patrick and Nicole Gaines, Chelsea and Oliver Palumbo and Dakota and Brandon Baker. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 31 at Crosier-Pearson-Mayfield Funeral Home in Burleson led by Dr. Kent A. Heimbigner, Senior Pastor of Charity Lutheran Church of Burleson. The family will receive visitors at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday prior to the service. Burial will take place at 3:00 p.m. Monday, June 2 at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, North Carolina. A brief graveside service will be led by Reverend Crotty of St. Thomas Lutheran Church and attended by friends and family. DARRELL WARD
1934-2003
Burleson -- Darrell Ward, 68, passed away Wednesday, May 21, 2003, in Hurst. A memorial gathering of Darrell's family and friends was held at the family home on Saturday, May 24. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Alzheimers Association. Darrell was born in Bragg City, Missouri on July 25, 1934. He moved to Texas in 1969. Darrell joined the United States Army after high school and later served as Chief Warrant Officer. After service, he became a salesman of new and pre-owned cars and worked for many dealerships in the Fort Worth metroplex area for thirty years. Darrell was a good husband, father and friend. He loved boating on Possum Kingdom Lake. His kind heart, energetic spirit and warm compassion endeared him to many people. He will be missed tremendously. Darrell is survived by Judy Ward, his wife and best friend of 21 years; daughter, Sandy Horton of Hurst, whom he held close to his heart, and her husband, Travis; two grandchildren, Taryn and Courtney Horton, whom PaPa loved and treasured dearly; son, Darrell Ward, Jr. and wife, Lana, of Granbury; daughter, Angela Murphy and husband,, Patrick, of Granbury; grandchildren, Alexa, Audrea and Blake Ward, Meagan and Brooke Murphy; sister, Bonnie Dodson of Florrisant, Missouri; brothers, Jack Ward and wife, Gloria, of Austin, and Glen Ward and wife, Lorita, of Memphis, Tennessee; numerous nieces and nephews. Burleson--Alvin Ishmael Owen, 76, died Thursday, May 22, 2003, at a local care center. He was a construction inspector for the City of Cedar Hill who retired in 2001. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 24 at Mountain Valley Chapel. Burial was at Laurel Land Memorial Park, Fort Worth. Alvin Owen was born July 9, 1926, in Mountainburg, Arkansas, the son of Jesse Frank and Thelma Ledbetter Owen. He had been a resident of Burleson for 43 years and was a member of First Baptist Church of Burleson. He was a member of Burleson Masonic Lodge #649 and was a 31 degree Scottish Rite Mason. He enjoyed going to his farm and tending his livestock. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII. Mr. Owen is survived by his wife of 54 years, Loyce Owen of Burleson; son, Jerry Owen and wife, Sherrye, of Alvarado; daughter, Beverly Owen of Burleson; sisters Nelda Collier of Arlington, Billie Rollins of Acton, Barbara Fletcher of Colorado; grandchildren, Michelle Owen and Kelsye Owen, both of Alvarado, Camille Wall of Burleson; great-granddaughter, Kalye Rosario of Alvarado; numerous nieces and nephews. Services for Mrs. Mary Wells, age 69, of Mansfield were held Saturday, May 10 in the chapel of Caudle-Rutledge Funeral Home in Lindale, Texas. The Reverends Hamilton "Shorty" Frost and Samuel Rowlett officiated. Interment followed in the Damascus Cemetery near Lindale. Mrs. Wells died Tuesday morning, May 6, 2003, in a Fort Worth hospital. She was born December 30, 1933, in Coushatta, Louisiana. She was a longtime resident of Mansfield where she was a member of the Central Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Birthday Club in Mansfield. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. She also enjoyed attending her grandchildren's events. Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Byron Wells of Mansfield; daughter, Debi Fults of Burleson; son and daughter-in-law, Byron "Rusty" and Carrie Wells of Burleson; son, Kenneth Wayne Wells of Arlington; grandchildren, Hollie and Kristopher Fults, Ashley, Derek, Lauren and Brandy Wells; great-grandchildren, Joshua Blakeney and Caleb Griffin. Rayford Lamar Hill, Sr., 68, of Joshua, passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2003, in Fort Worth. Mr. Hill was born February 10, 1935, in Yoakum, Texas to Autumn A. and Delia Clark Hill. He was a graduate of Sundeen High School in Corpus Christi. Mr. Hill was a U.S. Air Force veteran, a carpenter, a member of the Church of Christ in Joshua, the Moose Lodge in Corpus Christi, and participated in Golden Gloves. LIPAN-Harold D. Haralson, 75, died Friday, May 16, 2003, in Fort Worth. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 20 at Patillo Baptist Church. Burial was at Evergreen Cemetery. Harold Haralson was born July 27, 1927, in Lipan. He was a World War II Navy veteran and the owner and operator of a used car business. He was a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service from 1954 to 1971. He received his high school diploma from Santo High School in 2002. A special thanks to Dr. Ali and Dr. Frederic, and the respiratory therapy department and the doctors and staff on 6E and NICU at Plaza Medical Center in Fort Worth. Joshua Ryan Taylor, 16, a student, was taken from his family and friends by a drunk driver Saturday, May 10, 2003. We will never hear that deep soft voice again. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 13 at First Baptist Church of Joshua. Burial was at Caddo Cemetery in Joshua. Joshua Taylor was born June 19, 1986, in Fort Worth. He was named after the warrior in the Bible who led the people of Israel into the promised land. Josh always lived up to his name. He was a Junior at Joshua High School and a member of the Joshua ROTC. He was the Texas Junior Olympic Champion in Air Rifle Competition and was to compete in the Junior Olympic National Competition held in North Carolina in June. He loved "Hot Cars" and enjoyed working on engines. Joshua is survived by his parents, Larry and Beverly Taylor of Joshua; sister, Celesta Taylor; adopted sister, Tabetha Havasy; grandparents, Jim Taylor and Clyde and Helen Korn; aunts, Rhonda Taylor and Sheila Moresco; uncle, Don Korn; cousins, Sabrina, Eric, Brandi, Jace, Krystal, Bo, Jennifer and Kari; many people who loved him and were loved by him; and many second cousins who were dear to him. She married Jesse Nixon in Garden City, Kansas in 1932. She was a member of the Keene Seventh-day Adventist Church. He married Nancy Roberts on September 8, 1970, in Ardmore, Oklahoma. He had been a steel worker at Texas Steel for ten years. He was a member of The Church at Burleson. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; and two sisters. Burleson--John Fowler, 64 an owner of JFT Trucking, passed away Friday, May 2, 2003 in Fort Worth. Graveside services were held Tuesday, May 6, at the D.F.W. National Cemetery. John Fowler was born March 9, 1939, in Tifton, Georgia. He served in the U.S. Air Force and is a former Police Officer and Fire Fighter. Mr. Fowler was also a Master Mason and a Shriner. John was an extraordinary man, a loving husband, father and "peepaw" who will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him. Mr. Fowler was preceded in death by his parents, Bessie Louise and Candler Fowler of Tifton, Georgia. CARL EDWARD STILWELL

Cleburne ­ Carl Edward Stilwell, 90, a retiree of McDonald Douglas/Boeing and a small business owner, died Sunday, May 4, 2003. A graveside service was conducted Tuesday, May 6 in Keene Memorial Park. Carl was born December 20, 1912, to a farming family of Bloomdale, Ohio. He saw an opportunity in a new industry in Santa Monica, California building airplanes, which over 30 years developed into producing space exploration vehicles. During that time he was part of Jr. Achievement and played the guitar in his family's musical group. Carl retired and moved to Texas to again be near his sons. He opened a tool and engine repair shop, and he enjoyed his role as Elder at Keene Adventist Church. Carl is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 65 years, Ruth; sons, John and Jim Stilwell; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Eric Thomas Sestrom, 34, of Joshua died suddenly on April 27, 2003, in Canton. He was born August 1, 1968, in Tarrytown, New York, to William P. and Ellen Reilly Sestrom. Eric was a 1985 graduate of Briarcliff High School in Briarcliff Manor, New York. He served in the U.S. Air force as an AWACS computer operator from 1987 through 1991, including service in Oklahoma City, Iceland and Saudi Arabia during both Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He attended the Denver Automotive and Diesel College in 1992, where he earned top graduate honors. He owned and operated E-Tech Automotive, an independent auto service facility in Joshua. Eric had a zest for life and was loved by his many friends. He enjoyed model airplanes, auto mechanics and, when in the Air Force, was certified in sky-diving. In 1981, when the racing yacht "Numbers" won the Hudson River Championship, Eric was a valued crew member. In addition to his parents, Eric is survived by his son, Aiden, of Denver, Colorado; his dear partner, Shannan Davis and her daughter, Brianna, of Joshua; his maternal grandmother, Katherine Reilly of Briarcliff Manor, New York; stepfather, Paul A. Taylor of Denver; stepmother, Margaret Sestrom of New London, Connecticut; his brother and sister-in-law, Jonathan and Jessica Sestrom; nephew, Connor Jonathan Sestrom of New London; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Phyllis Thomason Benson Evans, 39, of Burleson, concluded her walk on this earth Saturday, April 26, 2003. She was a real estate agent in Burleson. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 29 at the Word of Life Church Center. Phyllis was active in the Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce, having founded the Junior Ambassadors Club. She volunteered with the annual American Heart Association's fundraising, the American Cancer Society Relay For Life in Burleson and with Covenant Women of Fort Worth. Professionally, she was the Fannie Mae representative for Century 21, A-One Realty. Phyllis was preceded in death by her mother, Georgia Thomason. She was a Granbury resident for three years, an Irving resident for 22 years, a Burleson resident for 15 years and a Dallas resident from 1945 to 1965. Iris Rader Jones, 89, passed away April 15, 2003, at home in Benbrook. She was born May 15, 1913, in Jarrell, Texas to Henrietta Millard and George Frank Rader. Iris is survived by her daughters, Margaret Martone and Tracey Farris; son, Bob Jones; grandchildren, Kathy Boshears, Kyle Omberg, Simon Erich, Tony Martone and Stephen Jones; great-grandchildren, Joey Omberg, Alexis Omberg, Trent Jones. She is also survived by five sisters, Lucille Preece, Louise Carlson, Martha Rader, Marie Bruce and Nell Delaney; as well as a multitude of nieces, nephews and cousins across the state. Iris was an LVN who had worked in nursing for most of her life. She was a Daughter of the Republic of Texas, being descended from Colonel Henry Millard, Commander of the right flank of Sam Houston's Army at San Jacinto. Iris was a loving mother and grandmother. She was always helping others and will be missed by many, many friends and family. Services were held Thursday, April 17 in Austin at Harrell Funeral Home, 4435 Frontier Trail. James Glenn Thompson was a veteran who served in the Air Force for six years. He had a hobby in woodworking "scroll" and made many pieces that are all around and were beautiful work. James was a resident of Burleson for 22 years. Interment was at Hillcrest Garden of Memory in Hillsboro. John Alford was born April 6, 1924, in Artemus, Kentucky to Greene Berry and Roxie Baird Alford. He started working in coal mines at the age of 14. He served in the US Army during World War II and was a Tech Sergeant. While stationed in Maryland he met Willie Faye Harlin. They were married on July 7, 1945, in Gainesville, Texas. They moved to Littlefield where he worked for Coca Cola Bottling in Littlefield and Lubbock for 26 years. Mr. Alford served as a city councilman and was on the Chamber of Commerce in Littlefield. In 1972, the Alfords moved to Hill County where they had a ranch at Woodbury. He was production manager at both Hillcrest Carpets and Spartan Copper in Hillsboro. He retired to Burleson in 1994. Mr. Alford was a member of the Rotary Club in Littlefield and a charter member of the Lions Club in Lubbock, the V.F.W. and D.A.V. in Burleson. Morlex Don King, 59, of Amarillo and Motley County, Texas, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003. Services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 22 at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel in Amarillo. Reverend Don McMahan of Turkey United Methodist Church officiated. Burial was in Llano Cemetery. Born in Childress, Mr. King lived in Amarillo. He owned and operated Don King's Goldsmith Jewelry shop until 1998, when he started ranching in Motley County. He attended King's Way Missionary Institute in McAllen and later served as a missionary in Honduras for three years. He was very involved with the Boy Scouts, serving as Assistant Scout Master with Troop 621 in Burleson. He owned and operated a barbershp in Burleson for 15 years. In his spare time he loved to fish and hunt. Mr. King married Jane Henley in Amarillo on April 16, 1967. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Brett King of Burleson and Brad King of Waco; brother, Ronald Gene King of Amarillo; and two grandchildren. Larry Franklin Hallmark, 55, of Alvarado passed away Sunday, March 16, 2003 at Huguley Hospital. He was a former resident of Winfield, Alabama. Larry was retired from Walker Mechanical in Burleson. MAX ELIZONDO TREVIŅO

Max Elizondo Treviņo died peacefully in his sleep on March 15, 2003, after a short bout with pneumonia. He was born August 8, 1915, in Monterrey, Mexico, the third child of Lucio and Sarah Treviņo. The family lived on a ranch in the Mexican countryside. They later relocated to Monterrey so the children could attend school, and Max's father opened a dry goods store. He attended public school in town. During this time Max was introduced to the gospel message of Adventism, and the entire family converted from Catholicism shortly thereafter. In 1936, Max became a literature evangelist. He entered the Instituto Prosperidad in Mexico City to train as a pastor. During this time he met his future wife, Esther Perez. They were married on July 30, 1939. The young couple settled in Mexico City, where Max became the publishing director for the Gulf-Mission division of the Mexican Union, staying until 1945. During this time their three children were born. In 1943, he became assistant manager of the Mexico Central Book and Bible House. In 1945, the family moved to the Spanish American Seminary in Sandoval, New Mexico, now the Sandia View Academy. Max filled various roles, including accountant, teacher and Dean of Men. In 1950, Max took a position in accounting and sales at Southwestern Junior College in Keene. He began handling sales for the furniture factory at the school, which led to his employment with Union College in Nebraska. From 1972 until 1981, Max served in management at the Book and Bible House on the college campus. Following his retirement in 1981, Max continued to serve in various capacities for the Southwestern Union, and kept an office in the building. Throughout their time in Keene, both Max and Esther were regular members of the Keene Seventh-day Adventist church. Max regularly read his King James Version Bible through from start to finish every year. His devotion to the Word of God and his service to the church continue to serve as examples to his family and community. Max is survived by his wife, Esther; daughters Aida and husband, Robert Roy, and Nellie Treviņo; son Max A. and his wife, Betty Ann; grandchildren, Robin and Lisa Davis of Plano, Jason and Wendy Treviņo of Dallas, Robert and Dawn Roy of Orlando, Florida, Mark and Andrea Cheneweth of Fort Worth, and Todd and Cheri Wemmer of Salem, Massachusetts; and four great-grandchildren, Hannah and Zachary Cheneweth, Austin Davis and Alixandra Roy.

Eric James Hyer, age 32, died February 20, 2003, of injuries sustained in the West Warwick, Rhode Island nightclub fire. He was a book binder for Auto Trader. Eric lived in the Burleson area in the early nineties and was a former employee of Kentucky Fried Chicken. He was a quiet, shy young man who loved attending rock concerts, listening to music, fishing with and hanging out with his brothers, watching wrestling with his father, and family gatherings. BURLESON -- Kenneth Masters, 77, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, crossed over into eternity, Monday, March 10, 2003. The Reverend Marlin Fenn will officiate, assisted by Kingwood Minister Lisa Baumgartner, with eulogy by nephew, Wesley Masters. Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in Center Plains Cemetery, Cotton Center. Kenneth Forest Masters was born December 16, 1925, in Coloney, Oklahoma. He was the 11th of 12 children born to William Newton Masters and Fannie Lula (Mayo) Masters. Kenneth wore many hats during his lifetime. He proudly served with the famed Company D, 5th Ranger Battalion, in World War II and saw action in France, Belgium and Germany. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and recipient of the Golden Trowel Award. He twice served as Worshipful Master of the Everman Deercreek Lodge #510. Other hats include scoutmaster, volunteer, fireman, president of the Burleson Little League, Band Booster and Quarterback Club. He helped establish Kingwood Methodist Church in Burleson and served as chairman of the finance committee. He also served 10 years on the board of directors for Winn-Dixie Credit Union and until his death served the state of Texas as a notary public. In his professional life Kenneth retired from Winn-Dixie (Kimbell and Buddies) after 36 years. He held the position of director of store planning and construction as well as supervisor of grain elevators. Mr. Masters was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Claudell Wynema (Roberts) Masters; brothers, Tom, Jess and Edgar (Dinks) Masters; sisters, Florence Fenn, Zola Lovell and Ethel Driver. She was born May 17, 1913, in Austin, the only child of Thomas C. and Izora Jensen. She attended elementary school in Austin, Southwestern Junior College in Keene and Washington Missionary College in Washington, DC. She married Frank Wiester in 1935. They resided in Mount Vernon, Ohio. On March 5, 1941 she married C.M. "Son" Stoner in Austin. He was the owner of Stoner Drilling, Inc., in Keene, and she was the manager of their rental property. They enjoyed traveling and visited many parts of the world together, and she continued to travel after Mr. Stoner's death, particularly cruising. She also enjoyed photography and needlework. She had a love for beautiful flowers and majestic trees, but her greatest joy was being with her family. She will always be remembered and greatly missed. Mrs. Stoner was preceded in death by her loving husband of 51 years, C.M. "Son" Stoner in 1993; and her son, Clarence M. Stoner, Jr. in Vietnam, in 1969. She is survived by one son, Bill C. Burleson -- John E. Sudduth, 70, went home to be with the Lord on February 23, 2003. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 26 at Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery in Grand Prairie. John retired from Siemen's Dematic in 2002. He was a Korean war veteran. Mr. Sudduth was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Janie Sudduth and his sister, Cliett Kight. Mildred Word Webb Chiles Friend, 92, of West Point, Mississippi, passed away Wednesday, February 19, 2003. Funeral: Saturday, February 22 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Burial: West Point Memorial Gardens. Formerly of Joiner, Arkansas, Mrs. Friend had lived in West Point since 1960. She loved her church, The Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and its members. She was church organist for 20 years, Past President of the Catholic Women's Society, and held several other church offices. The highlight of her week was attending Mass. She was a member of the Lone Oak Home Demonstration Club and the Daughters of the Confederacy. Her constant companion in her later years was friend Peggy Stovall. Mrs. Friend was preceded in death by father and mother, Malcolm Alexander Webb and Mildred Gideon Webb; husbands, Ben Chiles and Charles F. Luther Howard Wilson, 80, passed away Sunday, February 16, 2003, in Granbury. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 20 at Wiley Funeral Home in Granbury. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Laurel Land Memorial Park in Fort Worth. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be John Wilson, Danny Wilson, Gary Wilson, Derek Ball, Chad Leavitt and Brian Loughmiller. Mr. Wilson was born September 18, 1922, in Lake Dallas. He grew up in Dallas and graduated from Crozier Tech High School in 1942. He married Clara Lurline Everett on June 1, 1943, in Dallas. He served in the Army's 6th Ranger Battalion as a staff sergeant in the South Pacific during World War II. Mr. Wilson received the Theodore N. Vail Medal of Honor in 1976 for the rescue of a child from an apartment fire. He worked for Southwestern Bell for 38 1/2 years and also farmed 100 acres in Burleson. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and had been a member of Crowley First United Methodist Church since 1965. Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by his son, Jimmy Glenn Wilson, in 1984. He is survived by wife, Clara L. Fort Worth--Norris D. Samuelson, 66, known to many as Mr. Sam, passed away Friday, February 14, 2003, after a lifetime of enriching the lives of countless Texas school children through music. Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 17 at Laurel Land Memorial Chapel. Burial was at Laurel Land Memorial Park of Fort Worth. Norris Samuelson was born February 7, 1937, in Canyon to Otto Norris Samuelson and Bessie Blanton Samuelson. He was raised in Canyon, attended West Texas State University and received a Masters of Music Education from Vandercook School of Music. Mr. Sam taught throughout the Texas Panhandle before settling in the North Central Texas area. He was the director of bands at Everman, Alvarado and Kennedale. Mr. Samuelson is survived by his wife of 41 years, Gretchen Donovan Samuelson; sons, Norris D. James Nathaniel Barney, 76, of Burleson died Sunday, February 9, 2003, at his residence. He was a retired American Manufacturing employee. He married Regina Veronica Newtown on January 31, 1948, in Oswego, New York. He was a resident of Burleson for the past 42 years and had worked 17 years for American Manufacturing Company, retiring in 1988. He was a US Navy veteran and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Mr. Barney is survived by his wife of 55 years, Regina Newtown Barney; sons, James A. Barney, Brian R. Barney, Christopher J. Angela R. Pratt, 28, of Burleson died Thursday, February 6, 2003. She was a nanny. Funeral services were held Monday, February 10 at The Church at Burleson. Burial was Tuesday at Johnson Chapel Cemetery, Des Arc, Arkansas. Angela went home to be with her Lord and Saviour after being involved in an automobile accident. She was born March 13, 1974, in Houston. A former resident of Arlington, she moved to Burleson four years ago to be near the church she loved, The Church at Burleson. From a very early age, Angela loved her Lord and gave most of her free time to God's work. She loved children and spent a lot of time working with them. William H."Bill" Pennington, CLU, 69, joined hands with his Savior in his New Life before dawn on Wednesday, February 5, 2003, in Willow Park, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 10 at First Baptist Church of Willow Park. Ed Webber, a longtime family friend, will officiate. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation was 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Saturday at Greenwood Funeral Home. William H. Pennington, a longtime resident of Willow Park, was born October 8, 1933, in Fort Worth, to William Howard Pennington and Nellie L. Pennington. He graduated from Technical High School in Fort Worth in January of 1951, and received a B.S. degree from Hardin Simmons in 1960. Bill was a successful insurance agent for 36 years, winning numerous awards, certifications and qualifications. He was a member of the Fort Worth Association of Life Underwriters, the Fort Worth Association of Health Underwriters and a member of the National Associations of Insurance and Financial Advisors since 1967. He qualified for "Million Dollar Round Table" numerous times during his insurance career. He was a longtime member of River Oaks Kiwanis Club. Bill and Juanita were lifetime and charter members of Aledo Pioneers Square Dance Club and also members of Sadellites and The Gadabout Square dance clubs. Bill lost his 2 1/2 year battle with cancer which he faced the same way he faced life, with a positive outlook and attitude. His final thoughts to his family were written shortly before passing and included this message: "I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one. I'd like to leave an after glow of smiles when life is done. I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. I'd like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun of happy memories that I leave when life is done." Family and friends gathered at Bill's home Tuesday evening to show their love and support, fulfilling his only request: to be surrounded by those whom he loved. James "Bub" Bowen, age 53, of Benbrook and former Coleman resident, died Monday, January 27, 2003, at Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth. Funeral services were held Friday, January 31 at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Gary Boyd officiating. Graveside committal services were also held Friday at Benbrook Cemetery with Dr. Larry Sanders officiating. James "Bub" Bowen was born May 17, 1949, in Coleman, Texas and was a son of Jake and Cleva Olena Hogan Bowen. He grew up in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School in 1967. He graduated from Texas A & M University in 1971, and then graduated from the Texas Tech School of Law. On June 21, 1969, he married Dorothy Rutzke in Homestead, Florida. He practiced law in Coleman from 1975 to 1997, when he moved to Benbrook. He was the owner of Bowen Contracting Company in Fort Worth. He was a member of Trinity Hills Baptist Church in Benbrook and a former member of First Baptist Church in Coleman. While living in Coleman he served as the County Attorney. Mr. Bowen is survived by his wife, Dorothy Bowen of Benbrook; two daughters and sons-in-law, Felicia and Jim Bob Barker of Benbrook and Kari and Shea Connelly of Fort Worth; one son, Ramey Bowen of Benbrook; three grandchildren, Ansley, Simone and Danielle Barker, all of Benbrook; mother-in-law, Betty Rutzke Quillen of Homestead, Florida; numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Addie Worley Burleson, 67, of Cleburne passed away on January 30, 2003 peacefully at her home, after a brief battle with cancer. She was a retired teacher. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Addie was born January 29, 1937, to Braxton and Valda Worley in Aquilla, Texas. She married Ronald R. Burleson, also from Aquilla, and eventually settled in Joshua. She was a Drama and English teacher for the Godley ISD for 20 years where she touched the lives of many people. The family requests that memorials be made in her name to the Godley High School Library. Terry Wayne Hamlin, 41, of Burleson died Friday, January 31, 2003, at a Fort Worth hospital. He was co-owner of Kilgore Electronics. Terry Hamlin, a loving and caring son, brother and friend, was born March 11, 1961, in Amarillo to Al and Dorothy Hamlin. He was a 1979 graduate of Burleson High School and had been a resident of Fort Worth for 20 years. He enjoyed building furniture and doing home remodeling. Terry loved people and had CB friends all over the U.S. His wonderful sense of humor will be greatly missed. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend. Carol loved to spend her time with her family and enjoyed watching the grandkids run around. Hattie L. Pugh, 87, of Burleson died Monday, January 27, 2003. She was retired from the Social Security Administration after 28 years of service. Memorial services will be announced at a later date. Hattie had willed her body to Southwestern Medical School for medical education and research. Miss Pugh was born May 2, 1915, in Frankville, Alabama, to Jennie and Warren Pugh. She was very talented at handwork and was an excellent seamstress. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Burleson. She was also a member of the Elijah Pugh Chapter of DAR of Jackson, Alabama. Miss Pugh was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Mac and Joe Pugh. She is survived by her brothers, George Pugh of Uefaula, Alabama and David Pugh of Burleson; four nieces; and one nephew.

Bonnie Brewer, 88, of Burleson died Sunday, January 26, 2003, at a Burleson care center. She was a retired ice cream maker for Foremost Dairies. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 29 in Mountain Valley Chapel. Burial will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday in Rock Spring Cemetery, Texarkana, Arkansas. Bonnie Brewer, a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, was born May 18, 1914, in Thorndale, the daughter of Willie Bryan Beard and Roslyn Esther Rolan Beard. She was a resident of the Fort Worth area for many years prior to moving to Arkansas. She moved back to Burleson in 1996. She married Eathan Brewer on December 27, 1941, in Fort Worth. Mrs. Brewer was preceded in death by her husband, Eathan Brewer, on May 11, 1995; her parents, Willie and Rosa Beard; a grandson, Eric Brewer; and a brother, W.H. Beard. Robert "Bob" L. Foster, Sr., 69, of Burleson died Friday, January 24, 2003, at a Fort Worth hospital. He was a retired engineer for Bell Helicopter-Textron where he worked for 35 years. Funeral services were held Monday, January 27 at Mountain Valley Funeral Home Chapel in Burleson. Burial was at Laurel Land Memorial Park in Fort Worth. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Burleson Children's and Youth Ministries. Bob was born August 6, 1933, in Lufkin to William A. and Gladys Allen Foster. He married Mattie Newby on August 15, 1954, at Fort Hood. He proudly served his country in the army during the Korean War. He was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, and father-in-law, and enjoyed his children's and grand-children's sports and activities. He had coached peewee baseball in Burleson, enjoyed woodworking, and was a huge Aggie fan. Mr. Foster was preceded in death by his father in 1954; his mother in 1992; stepfather, Tom Trice, in 1996; stepmother, Clara Bell Trice, in 2001; a brother, William Foster, in 2001; a stepsister, Mary Poor, in 1992; and a grandson, Thomas Doyle "Goober" Foster, in 2001. Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 28 at Mountain Valley Funeral Home Chapel in Burleson. Burial was at Burleson Memorial Park. Mr. Phares was born December 10, 1949, in Burleson to Ernest and Lola Underwood Phares. He married Glenda Hall on December 10, 1965, in Cleburne. He was a licensed ordained minister and pastored the Faith Baptist Church in Burleson. He taught Sunday School and helped pastor at the House of Faith Mission Church in Cleburne, and was a member of Avenue L. Baptist Church. He also enjoyed woodworking. Mr. Phares was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Clayton Phares. Don H. Tyler, 78, of Joshua died Monday, January 20, 2003, at a Fort Worth Hospice. He was a retired salesman in the automotive industry. Mr. Tyler was born July 15, 1924, in Lakeview to Harry D. and Josephine Hudgins Tyler. He married Pat Chapman on March 3, 1986, in Everman. He was past Worshipful Master of Godley Masonic Lodge #988, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Holy Comforter Episcopal Church in Cleburne. Mr. Tyler was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Harry Tyler, Jr. and Bobby Tyler. Burial was at Burleson Memorial Park. Kenneth Ray Walker was born July 9, 1937, in Fort Worth to Elmer Lee and Ola Dee Fagan Walker. He retired from the Mansfield I.S.D. custodial department where he had worked the last eight years. He had also worked at Hobbs Trailer Manufacturing in Fort Worth for 20 years and was a former employee of Texas Steel. He was past worshipful master of Masonic Lodge #649 in Burleson, and he was a Baptist. Mr. Walker was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, two sisters, and a daughter, Vickie Lynn Wiltshire in 1998. Loyce and her twin brother Loyd were born May 14, 1918 on a farm in Walters, Oklahoma. Loyce and Loyd were the youngest of eleven children, seven girls and four boys, born to Maggie Louvinia McCord and James Estes Newsom. Loyce grew up in Walters and graduated from Walters High School. She moved to Fort Worth in 1937 where she met Harold George Gale, Jr. The two were married November 18, 1938 in Wetherford, Texas and enjoyed 47 years together. Their union was blessed with two children, a son, Harold George Gale, III born June 18, 1940 and a daughter Mary Maurine born August 15, 1943. Her husband, "Gale" was drafted and served in the Army during World War II. Loyce did her part for the war effort by going to work at Consolidated Aircraft which later became General Dynamics and then Lockheed Martin. After being hired as Christmas help for Stripling Department Stores downtown in November of 1949, Loyce stayed for 30 years, ten of those as a buyer. Loyce grew up in the church and loved the Lord. She was a member of Polytechnic Christian Church which became Sandy Lane Christian Church for 40 years and then became a member of Alsbury Baptist Church in 1995. Loyce was preceded in death by her husband, Harold George Gale, Jr., May, 1986 and her son Harold George Gale, III, July 1990. Mrs. Gale is survived by her daughter, Maurine Stutler; grandson, Mark Gale and his wife, Lisa; granddaughters, Catherine Lancaster and her husband, Daron, Shelby Boismier and her husband, Mike, Wendy Gale, Amanda Gale; great-grandchildren, Andrew and Travis Gale, Camerine, Cassidy and Carey Lancaster and Olivia Boismier and a host of devoted family and good friends.

Charles Everett Hall, 66, of Crowley, went home to his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, January 8, 2003 at a Fort Worth hospital after a valiant battle with cancer. He was a retired supervisor. He attended Polytechnic High School and served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps. He married Barbara Crow in 1959, and had resided in Crowley since 1977. He was a supervisor for Lone Star Gas Company and retired in 1995 after 37 years of service. Charles was an avid sports fan. He loved searching for antiques at garage sales and flea markets. He was a devoted family man who was always available to a family member or friend in need. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with the lights of his life, his two granddaughters. He will be deeply missed but forever in our hearts. Mr. Hall was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James Hall. He enjoyed fishing, playing guitar and drums, and had been in the church orchestras of The Lighthouse Church and The Church at Burleson. He was a graduate of the Dean School, and was valedictorian of his graduating class. Keith had a generous, kind spirit and had a smile for everyone. He loved people. She spent her childhood in the cotton fields of Olney, which gave her a deep appreciation for the hardships and spiritual needs of the common man. Her parents, T.D. and Grace Chesnut, taught her the true values and virtues of the pioneer woman. In 1940 she met her true and everlasting love, A.J. (Jack) Stafford. They were married for 38 years before his death in 1978. One troubled night in 1948 they passed a tent in North Side Ft. Worth where Bro. Jake Filbert was holding a tent revival. On that night their religious spiritual journey began which started with street services for the homeless, mission work and jail services for the troubled. They founded the West Side Assembly of God Church in Ft. Worth where their pastorship for over 20 years touched the lives of many. Sis. Stafford was one of the first females to be ordained as a minister in the North Ft. Worth Assembly of God Section. In her last years she was home confined, but her phone was always busy with calls from friends and souls who needed guidance or a spiritual uplift. She was a spiritual hero for those in need and remained that way until she crossed over to the other side to meet all of her brothers and sisters in Christ. She was preceded in death by her parents, T.D. and Grace Chesnut, and her husband, Rev. A.J. Stafford. The family extends a deep thanks and love for her caretakers, Evelyn Goodwin, Pauline Baker, Cheryl Nelson,, and Community Hospice. Mary Elmyra Sanders, 96, formerly of Keene, passed away January 2, 2003 in Thousand Oaks, California. She was born April 25, 1906 on a farm near Walkerton, Indiana. She Met Floyd O. Sanders at Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan (formerly EMC), and in 1927 they were married and entered a lifetime of ministry together serving not only in Indiana, but also in North Carolina, Arkansas, Kansas, and Nebraska. In 1971 retirement brought them to Keene, Texas. Mary's sense of humor and practical jokes kept life from becoming mundane. In retirement she volunteered in the Community Services Center, quilted for the church's humanitarian activities, counted church monies and went with Floyd to sell his original oil paintings. After 65 years of marriage, Floyd passed away. In 1997 she moved to be near her son. Graveside Services for Mrs. Sanders were held at Keene Memorial Park, in Keene, Texas on Wednesday, January 8, 2003. She is survived by her son, Leon F. Sanders, who is currently treasurer of the Pacific Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists in Thousand Oaks, California. Charles Wayne Glover was born May 9, 1939, in Weatherford. He was a 25-yr. member of the Optimist Club, serving in the Weatherford and Sunrise Optimist Clubs as president, treasurer and officer. Charles Glover was a supporter of the Benbrook Fire Department and the Benbrook Youth Baseball and Softball Association. Charles was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing and hunting. He was a true lover of life. He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing practical jokes on his grandchildren and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles L. Treva J. Yocum, 93, departed this life and went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, in Burleson. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Greenwood Chapel. Burial is at Greenwood Memorial Park. Treva Yocum, the eldest of 10 children, was born Nov. 6, 1909, in Amory, Miss., to Lonnie J. Pennington and Florence Dill. At 16, she married Carl J. Yocum and moved to Fort Worth in 1967 and then to Burleson in 1970. Her all-abiding devout faith in God was utmost in her life. She was a long-time member of Boulevard Baptist Church in Burleson. She loved to help people and volunteered many hours of service at the White Settlement Senior Citizen Center and Meals on Wheels Program. Many lives were touched by her kind and helping hands. Her unconditional love, generosity and support made her the "guiding light" for the family. She lovingly cared for and helped raise many of her grandchildren and will be missed and dearly remembered by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Yocum, in 1987 and daughter, Georgelle Taylor, in 1974. Survivors: Sons, Travis Clayton Yocum and wife, Kim, of Fort Worth and James C. Murrell E. Connell, 89, a resident of Jefferson, Texas, for 43 years prior to moving to Keene, Texas, passed away in Keene on Thursday, January 2, 2003. He had been the owner of the Jefferson business, Marwin Products, and the producer of the Marti Broom, a lightweight broom which was popular throughout the southwest. Funeral services were held Monday, January 6 at Jefferson Seventh-day Ad-ventist Church. Burial was at Berea Cemetery in Jefferson. Pastors Don Schneider and Gaston Wallace officiated. Connell was born September 11, 1913, in Little Rock, Arkansas, to Lytcott J.B. Connell, native of Barbados, and Carrie E. Baird, of Barry County, Michigan. His early years were spent in Searcy, Arkansas. He attended high school and college at Southwestern Junior College in Keene, Texas. It was there that he met Iva Ruth Spear, who became his wife on August 19, 1937. She preceeded him in death on January 3, 2000. From 1943 to 1954, Connell was the manager of the broom factory at Southern Missionary College, Collegedale, Tennessee. He was a member of the Jefferson Academy Seventh-day Adventist Church where he had been active as an elder and a deacon. He served on the executive committee of 100 at Southwestern Adventist College. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, R. Edwin and Darlene "Tyke" Connell of Keene, Texas, and his daughter and son-in-law, Martha Ann "Marti" and Don C. Schneider of Laurel, Maryland. Survivors also include four grandchildren, Steven A. (and Sandra) Connell, C. Darby of El Mirage, Arizona; the four sons of his late sister, Erma Cross; and two sons and two daughters of his brother Milton.

1938-2002 Gordon L. Fields, 64, of Joshua died Saturday, December 21 at a Fort Worth hospital. He was a business entrepreneur. Services were held Saturday, December 28 at Mountain Valley Chapel. Gordon was a husband, father, grandfather, businessman and friend to many. He was born on August 20, 1938, in Olney, Texas. A man of many interests and abilities, Gordon initially began working in the oil fields of west Texas, moving on to become an aircraft mechanic at Vought Aircraft. Eventually he steered his innate mechanical abilities to the automotive industry, establishing Muffs 'n' Stuff muffler distributorship of Texas and Magic Muffler Service Center of Burleson. Throughout his life, Gordon would "walk into a room and fill it up." Gordon's vitality sparked daily anecdotes for friends and family as a legacy for all. He will be dearly missed by Peggy, his wife and best friend for nearly 30 years, his children and grandchildren, his mother and brothers, his nieces and nephews, his extended family of in-laws and his many, many friends in his community and in Texas. She was born July 14, 1922, in Cross Plains, Tx, the daughter of Moses Clayton and Winnie Irene White Baum. She had been a resident of Burleson 45 years, and was with Buddies and Winn-Dixie Supermarkets for 25 years prior to her retirement. She was a member of Burleson Church of Christ. Winnie loved people and was loved in return. She never met a stranger. A devout Christian, she loved reading her Bible. She loved her children, but her husband, Sanford J. Mason, was the light of her life. He preceded her in death in 1996. They enjoyed fishing and camping with their family. Kenneth Wayne "Pinky" Bankston 66, of Burleson, passed away Friday, December 13, 2002 at a Fort Worth hospital after a courageous and determined battle with cancer. He was a retired fireman for the City of Fort Worth. Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 17 at Mountain Valley Funeral Home Chapel in Burleson. Burial was at Laurel Land Memorial Park in Fort Worth. Mr. Bankston was born May 21, 1936 in Cleburne, to Coleman and Mildred Johnson Bankston. He proudly served his country in the US Navy from 1954 to 1958. He also served the City of Fort Worth as a fireman for 31 years, retiring in 1991. Services for Wallace Gordon Cockerham, 69, of Burleson were held Monday, December 2 at First Baptist Church in Lancaster. Burial was at Red Oak Cemetery. Mr. Cockerham worked for over 25 years in public school administration, 14 years as superintendent for a Class 5-A public school. He served as President, Texas Association of School Administrators (1983-84) and Past President, Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce (1982). He graduated from Abilen Christian College in 1954 with a B.S. and North Texas State University with a Masters in Education in 1958. Post Graduate Suty was at East Texas State University.

She enjoyed fishing, boating, cooking and especially riding their Harley with her husband. She loved caring for their son. Margaret E. Spurlock, 84, a loving wife, mother and grandmother, died Sunday, November 17, 2002, in Fort Worth. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 20 at First United Methodist Church of Crowley. Burial was at Laurel Land Memorial Park. Margaret E. Spurlock was born October 11, 1918, in Cash. She retired from TCU Food Services and WT Grant. A resident of Crowley, Margaret was a volunteer at House of Hope and was a monthly luncheon coordinator of Crowley Chamber of Commerce. Margaret is survived by son, Billy George Spurlock and wife, Kay; daughter, Shirley Sims and husband, Don; grandchildren, Frank A. Guzman, Jr. and wife, Linda, Gloria George and husband, Jimmy, Julie Rath and husband, Mark, and Crystal Brittain and husband, Patrick; great-grandchildren, Chastity Roberts, Freddy Noble, Gracie George, Devin Rath, Zack Guzman; brothers, B.J. Spurlock, Dale Spurlock, Bobby Spurlock; sister, Kathryn Haskovec; several nieces and nephews. Greenwood Funeral Home of Fort Worth handled the arrangements.

ROBERT EARL WILLIAMS
1938-2002
Robert Earl Williams, 64, passed away Saturday, November 16, 2002, in Fort Worth. He was a retired Maintenance Mechanic for Wildcat Cranes, Inc., and a member of St. Luke Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 21 at Laurel Land of Burleson Memorial Chapel. Burial will be at Tye Cemetery of Burleson. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Robert is survived by wife, Ethel Williams of Fort Worth; children, Rick and Jeana Williams of Farmersville, Fred Williams of Greenfield, Massachusetts, Juanita and Clayton Lancaster of Arlington, Robert and Diane Williams of Lewisville, Paul and Katie Williams of Bernardston, Massachusetts, Jennifer and Charles Deming of Northfield, Massachusetts, Melissa and Matt Simon of Burleson, Monica and Mark James of Arlington; two brothers; one sister; 29 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Laurel Land Funeral Home of Burleson is in charge of arrangements.
