Funeral services for Opal Elizabeth Brawner, 87, of Joshua were held Saturday, August 19 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Joshua. Reverend Wayne McCoy officiated with Grant and Vicki Caywood and Clydeen Wilson providing music. Burial was at Rose Hill Cemetery in Cleburne.
Pallbearers were Darrell Roach of Keller, Police Chief Paul Waldrip, officers Leland Cheek and Mike Swagerty, Fire Chief Dwayne Capps and Mitch Lamb.
Mrs. Brawner died Tuesday, August 16, 2000, at her home. She was former mayor of Joshua.
She was born November 13, 1912, in Covington, Texas to William Joseph and Malda Josephine Cashion McCoy. She was the second oldest of six children, Dora Mae, Esther Varnell, Everett Jefferson, Dewey Wayland and Billy Jack.
While still in her teens, Opal took nurses training at Glen Rose and cooking instruction at the Palace of Sweets. She worked at the Texas Theatre as cashier, at the Minute, Courtesy and Ace cafes, the Liberty Hotel restaurant and the Nestles Coffee Shop, all in Cleburne.
Opal married Harold Casey Brawner on February 28, 1935, in Cleburne. In 1937, Opal and Harold moved to Joshua where he began a career at the Lone Star Gas plant. Harold joined the Navy Sea Bees in 1942 during World War II. Opal followed him to Rhode Island and California before returning to Joshua. In 1945, she went to work for Monnigs, graduated from beauty school in 1961 and opened her own shop in 1962.
Mrs. Brawner was appointed as the first city secretary of Joshua, the first woman elected to the city council in 1978 and the only woman elected as mayor of Joshua. She was on the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce and was elected Citizen of the Year by that group. She was president of the Thursday Study Club, Joshua Historical Society, past worthy matron of Eastern Star and a member of the Mayor's hall of fame. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Joshua where she taught a class for over 30 years, served in WMU and other capacities of church life. She volunteered with United Way, Community Chest and Angel Tree.
Beginning in 1980, Mrs. Brawner was elected five times as mayor of Joshua, for which she took no pay. During her terms she implemented or improved such programs as modern sewer system and water works, low income housing, zoning board, police cars, bulletproof vests for all officers, permanent city dispatcher, paving and street lights, annexation of Mountain Valley and other areas, trailer park divisions, new city hall, purchase of additional property for city complex, city truck barn for equipment, professional standards for police department, motorcycle officer, dog tag ordinances, all of which were paid for without any increase in taxes.
Mrs. Brawner was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Brawner in 1974.
She is survived by sister, Esther Jackson of Joshua; brother, Billy Jack McCoy of Oklahoma City; Godchild, Joyce Gibson Roach of Keller; nieces and nephews, Mary Jo Wheeler, Sheri Barton and Ricky McCoy of Cleburne, Yolinda Huber of Plano, Hoylous Valdez of Rio Grande City and Don Royalty of South Carolina.
The family has requested that memorial donations be made to the Joshua Police or Fire Departments.

Funeral services for Donald L. Dowings, 55, of Burleson were held Friday, August 18 at First United Methodist Church in Joshua. Reverend Billy Strayhorn officiated. Burial was Saturday, August 19 at New Salem Cemetery in Prescott, Arkansas.
Pallbearers were Gary Monroe, Devin Potts, Patrick Potts, Kenny Hastings, Earl Sanders and Mike Dowings.
Mr. Dowings died Wednesday, August 16, 2000, in Fort Worth. He was a carpenter.
He was born October 7, 1944, in Prescott, Arkansas to William Stanley Dowings and Katie Campbell. He married Lucy Thompson Dowings on December 15, 1979, in Prescott, Arkansas. He was a member of New Salem United Methodist Church in Arkansas.
Mr. Dowings was preceded in death by his parents, William Stanley and Katie Dowings; and a brother, William R. Dowings.
He is survived by his wife, Lucy Dowings of Burleson; son, Stanley Dowings of Burleson; daughter, Holly M. Dowings of Burleson; sisters, Minnie Hart of Wink, Texas, Florence Baker of Texarkana, Arkansas, Louise McKissack of Longview, Margaret Schaeffer of Fouke, Arkansas, Mildred Stallsworth of Benton, Louisiana, Sue Monroe of Arlington; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mable Tarbet Lowe Henry, 87, will be held Thursday, August 17 at 10:00 a.m. at Benbrook Funeral Home in Benbrook. Mrs. Henry's cousin, Pastor Don Tarbet, will officiate. Interment will be at Laurel Land Memorial Gardens in Fort Worth.

Mrs. Henry died Monday, August 14, 2000. She was a former resident of Graham and was employed at Cobb's Department Store. Mrs. Henry, then known as Mable Lowe, was a former member of the East Side Church of Christ in Graham.
She was born Lucy Mabelle Tarbet on September 6, 1912, in Rule, Texas to the late George M. and Pearlene Gray Tarbet. She married Charles E. Lowe in 1933. Mr. Lowe died in 1971. She married Frank L. Henry, and they resided in Houston, Texas. He preceded her in death in 1981.
Mrs. Henry is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte Lowe Vander Pan and John Vander Pan of Benbrook; sister, Mary E. Driver of Santa Fe, Texas; step-daughter and husband, Susan and E. Lloyd of Sugarland, Texas; nephews and wives, James and Ann Cotham, Gary and Pat Cotham, Phillip and Cheryl Cotham, all of Santa Fe, Texas; and numerous great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Queen was preceded in death by her husband, Lester T. Queen in 1999.

Mr. Sanders passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 6, 2000, at his home in Joshua, surrounded by family and friends. He was a Marketing Director for Absolute Soap, Inc.
He was born October 9, 1955, in Cleburne. He was an Eagle Scout and former Scout leader with Troop 221. He was a member of Christ Church in Wedgewood. Mr. Sanders was a loving son, devoted father and a friend to many.

Mr. Anderson died Tuesday, August 1, 2000, at a local nursing home. He was a school custodian for 30 years at Monnig Middle School, retiring after 35 years with Fort Worth Independent School District.
He was born January 16, 1921, in Jack County, Texas. He was an elder at Western Hills Church of Christ and a Navy veteran of World War II, receiving two meritorious citations.

She was born May 19, 1921, in Weatherford, Texas, and had been a resident of Burleson for 20 years. She was an active member of Burleson Church of Christ and was a volunteer at Huguley Hospital for several years. She enjoyed gardening and her family, and was a very loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

He was born August 31, 1942, in Kilgore, Texas. He was a member of Local Plumbers Union #146. He served in the Coast Guard and was a member of the Sons of the Confederacy, SAL and the American Legion. He was also a civil war historian and a genealogist.

He was born September 16, 1931, in Keo, Arkansas. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of the Church of Christ.

He was born April 5, 1922, in Rochester, New York. He was a World War II Coast Guard veteran and a member of the American Legion Paul Manser Post. He loved to garden.
Mr. Killip was preceded in death by his wife, Winifred in 1998; daughter, Debbie; and son, Jimmy.

She was born December 3, 1985, in Fort Worth. Whitney was a lifelong resident of Burleson. She was a freshman at Burleson High School and a member of First Baptist Church of Burleson. She enjoyed volleyball, art and all outdoor sports.

Mr. Pohly died Saturday, July 22, 2000, in a Fort Worth hospital. He was a Church Custodian.
He was born November 19, 1957, in Dallas. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era. He had been a resident of Burleson for three years and was a member of Calvary Pentecostal Church. He enjoyed sports and playing softball.
Mr. Pohly is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Jan and Glenn Stromberg of Burleson; niece, Beja Oropeza and husband, Joe of Joshua; nephew, Seth Stromberg of Burleson; and great-niece, Vanessa Oropeza of Joshua.

She was born March 13, 1912, in Littleton, West Virginia. She was a member of the Crowley Church of Christ and had resided in Odessa prior to moving to Crowley.
Mrs. Hennon was preceded in death by her husband, Walter H. Hennon and her sister, Lee Veale of Crowley.
She is survived by son, Dale Hennon and wife, Connie of Glendora, California; brother, Oscar Roland Glover and wife, Hazel of Warren, Michigan, and their children, Peggy, Jeanette, Sharie, Dennis and Harry; three grandchildren, Kerry Hennon and wife, Terri of Highland, California, and their children, Cindy, Stacy and Russell, Kim McChesney and her son, Jeremiah of Glendora, California, and Koen Hennon and wife, Jeannie of Fontana, California, and their children, Nicholas, Nathan and Noelle; nieces, Mary Jane Stuart of Crowley and Carol Rice of Watauga; nephews, Eddie Veale of Santee, California and Alan Dale Veale of Rockport, Texas.

She was born February 19, 1921, in Hooker Oklahoma to John H. Chrispens and Minnie Augusta Grade Chrispens. She married Alton Marcontell on October 29, 1948, in Port Arthur, Texas.

Mr. Bondurant died Wednesday, July 19, 2000, in Fort Worth. He was an electrical engineer with Lockheed Martin, retired after 38 years of service.
He was born January 29, 1934, in Fulton, Kentucky. He was a member of University United Methodist Church and was an alumnus of the University of Kentucky. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.
Mr. Bondurant was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Bondurant, and his parents.
He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Nancy Bondurant of Ruidoso, New Mexico; daughters and sons-in-law, Alisa and Harry Fortune of Crowley, Barbara and Greg Wall of Kerrville, and Cindy and DeWayne Bush of Tuscola; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandson; brother and sister-in-law, George and Paula Bondurant of South Fulton, Tennessee; and stepmother, Mary Bondurant of Fulton, Kentucky.

Private funeral services are scheduled for Edwin D. "Don" Lehnert, 67, of Burleson.
Mr. Lehnert died Wednesday, July 19, 2000, at his home. He was a retired Parks Superintendent for the City of Burleson.
Mr. Lehnert was born November 28, 1932, in Cameron, Texas. He retired from the U.S. Army after 29 years of service, which allowed him to see much of the United States as well as other countries such as Ethiopia and Germany. After his retirement from the Army, his love of horticulture provided him with the opportunity to become the Parks Superintendent for the City of Burleson for the past 11 years. On July 13, 2000, the City of Burleson honored Mr. Lehnert with a lifetime achievement award and declared that day as Don Lehnert Appreciation Day.
Mr. Lehnert is survived by his wife, Jean Lehnert of Burleson; sons, Neal Lehnert and his wife, Christine of Athens, Greece, and Dr. Mike Lehnert and his wife, Robyn of Lexington, Kentucky; grandchildren, Curtis Lehnert, Dustin Lehnert, Brianna Lehnert and Kelsey Lehnert.

Graveside services for Oma Wadley, 92, of Keene were held Friday, July 21 at Camp Ground Cemetery in Terrell, Texas.
Mrs. Wadley died July 18, 2000, in Keene. She was a retired nurse.
She was born February 17, 1908, in Hunt County, Texas, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert R. Simmons. She received her education in the Hunt County Schools and graduated from the Gainesville Sanitarium School of Nursing in 1930. She was a member of the Nurses Alumni Association, District No. 13, State and National Association, and the American Red Cross Association for Nurses. She was loyal to her profession and active until ill health forced her to early retirement.
Mrs. Wadley was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Sherman-Denison and active in church work. She married Hugh A. Campbell in 1932. She was preceded in death by Mr. Campbell and an infant daughter. On January 30, 1947, she married Ervin J. Wadley. They lived in Gainesville, Texas until he was transferred to Sherman in 1955. In 1999 they moved to Keene.
Mrs. Wadley is survived by her husband, Ervin Wadley of Keene; step-daughter, Linda Colston and husband, Harold of Joshua; sister, Ruby Willey of Harrah, Oklahoma; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Doris O. Robbins, 82, a retired home health aide, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, in Palestine.
She was born May 19, 1918, in Breckenridge. She lived in Palestine for the past eight years; prior to that, she was a longtime resident of the Fort Worth-Benbrook area.
Doris was preceded in death by her son, Phillip LaVelle Robbins and brother, Phillip Joseph Galloway.

Mrs. Coker was preceded in death by husband, Jack Coker, Sr. in 1976; one grandson, Jeffrey Cuthers in 1994; two brothers; and two sisters.

Mr. Cobb died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at his home. He was co-owner and founder of Cobb Plumbing Company in Burleson.
He was born April 16, 1925, in Fort Worth. He graduated from Arlilngton Heights High School in Fort Worth. Mr. Cobb had lived in Burleson for 30 years and was a member of First Baptist Church of Burleson, Masonic Lodge, and was a Master Plumber. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Marine Corp. He was a devoted husband, father and friend.

VICTOR WEDDEL

A memorial service for Victor Weddel, 83, of Burleson was held July 3 at Victory Family Church Assembly of God in Burleson. His eldest grandson, Danny Weddel, and Pastor Larry Dickson officiated. A private graveside service was held July 1 at Skyview Memorial Park in Rendon.
Mr. Weddel passed from this life to meet his Heavenly Father on Friday, June 30, 2000. He was a retired master plumber and a member of the Local Plumbers Union Number 146 Plumbers and Steamfitters.
He was born January 18, 1917, in Milburn, Oklahoma, the son of Walter Andrew and Mattie Lou Florence Weddel. He married Irene O. Montandon on April 1, 1939, in Fort Worth. The two lived in Burleson for more than 30 years.
An excellent plumber, Mr. Weddel also enjoyed all aspects of carpentry work as well. He could build and repair just about anything; and when asked to take on a project, family and friends fondly recall his saying, time and again, "That's easy done."
A devoted husband, son, father, grandfather and friend, Mr. Weddel will be greatly missed. All who knew him have witnessed his lifelong strong moral character and will remember him always for his most gentle and patient spirit. Mr. Weddel lived out the Apostle Paul's admonishment to Christians, "Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love." (Ephesians 4:2)
Mr. Weddel is survived by his wife of 61 years, Irene Weddel of Burleson; two sons, Ron Weddel of Longmont, Colorado, and Dan Weddel of Acton; two daughters, Vickie Ennis and Connie Beatty, both of Arlington; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was born June 6, 1957, in Chicago, Illinois, the second son of John and Isabel O'Brien. Michael was full of life and fun and mischief. His best friends were his brothers, and he made his sisters feel like they were loved the "best". Michael loved and honored his parents. He was a Christian and honored The Lord. He served as usher at his church in Wedgwood, and was a Sunday School Teacher for the three-year-olds. Micheal fulfilled his dream of becoming a husband when he married Debi, and life just got better when Dalyssa arrived - his total pride and joy. He was a devoted husband and incredibly loving father. He loved and honored his in-law family as his own. Michael was here for only a short time, but he will be remembered as a big hearted man forever by those whose life he touched. We love you, Mikey, save a spot for us as you settle in next to Jesus.

She was born August 1, 1944, in El Paso, Texas. She attended Southwestern Adventist College and touched lives across the United States. She never said an unkind word nor knew a stranger. All who knew her are better for having done so. A loving daughter, giving sister, wonderful wife and unforgettable friend; she was all these things to all who knew her. She lived her life for those she loved and the Lord she served.
Linda is survived by her beloved husband, Cliff; daughters, Suzanne, Tiffany and Amy; grandsons, Austin and Tristan, who will forever remember their Nonna's embrace. Mr. Cobb died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at his home. He was a Tool Planner for Bell Helicopter Textron, retired since 1990.
He was born September 6, 1924, in Walker County, Alabama to Manly Claud Cobb and Buler Irene Higginbotham. After moving to Texas, Mr. Cobb was employed by General Dynamics of Fort Worth from 1949 to 1971. He subsequently worked for Bell Helicopter for 17 years.
Mr. Cobb is survived by his wife of 53 years, Opal A.
