George Wayne Smith, 57, of Kenefick, died Thursday, December 4, 2003, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 2 Pm, Monday, December 8, 2003, at the Sterling Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Wayne Hardin officiating and burial following at Palms Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 Pm to 9 Pm, Sunday at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton.
Wayne was born August 27, 1946 in Beaumont, to parents; Carl N. Smith, Sr. and Evalina Rankin Smith, a former resident of Houston, and has resided in the Kenefick area for the past 30 years. He was an Instrument Technician for Wyman-Gordon Industries in Houston with 36 years of service, graduate of the Galena Park High School class of 1964, veteran of the US Army with service during Vietnam, and Baptist by faith. He also enjoyed fishing, camping, piddling with tractors and equipment, and especially spending time with family and friends.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, grandson: Robert Smith, stepdaughter: Raylyn Turnbo, and brothers: Otis and Stelvin Smith.
He is survived by his wife of five years: Ella M. Smith of Kenefick, son: Jerry Smith and wife Ingrid of Kenefick, daughter: Tammy Smith and John Hirdes of Franklinton, LA, granddaughter: Catherine Anderson of Kenefick, stepsons: Robert Turnbo and wife Tina of Kenefick and Raymond Chandler of Cur N Shoot, sisters: Corleen Crisp of Channelview, First Sgt Suzanne LaMorie of US Army in Kuwait, Evelyn Burnitt of Kenefick, and Mary Ann Smith of Highlands, brothers: Carl Smith, Jr. of Vidor, Charles Smith of Kenefick, Clifton Smith of Huffman, and Douglas Smith of Kenefick, and numerous niece, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Pet E. Norris Franssen, 93, of Old River, died Thursday, December 4, 2003, at the San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown.
Graveside services will be held at 10 Am, Saturday, December 6, 2003, at Magnolia Park Cemetery in Dayton. Visitation will be held from 5 Pm to 9 Pm, Friday at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton.
Pet was born December 15, 1909, in Romayor, to parents; William B. and Sarah E. Vickery Norris, was a former resident of Texas City, and has resided in the Old River area for the past 52 years. She was a homemaker, member of the Old River Baptist Church, and enjoyed church activities, vegetable gardening, and raising chickens.
Mrs. Franssen was preceded in death by her parents, husband: Clyde R. Franssen, and numerous brothers and sisters. She is survived by her sister: Ethel Lee Hargrove of Highlands, sisters-in-law: Ovvie Franssen of Old River and Mary Franssen of Seattle, WA., and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Ashley Kae Mathews, Infant Daughter of Mark and Tonia (Dear) Mathews, of Dayton, died Monday, December 1, 2003 at the San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown.

Lena Fay Coward, 77, of Liberty, Texas died Tuesday, December 2, 2003 at Magnolia Place Nursing Home in Liberty, Texas.

Mrs. Coward was born May 25, 1926, in Saratoga, Texas to parents, Hugh B. Means and Athia Holland Means. She had been a lifelong resident of Saratoga before moving to Magnolia Place in 2003. Lena was a retired office administrator for the Hardin County Judges office. She enjoyed traveling, birdwatching, and spoiling her grandchildren.
Mrs. Coward is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, James H. Coward Jr., one granddaughter, Lou Ann Coward, one grandson, Daniel Coward, and two brothers, E.B. Means, and Elmer Means. She is survived by two sons, Jimmy Coward and his wife Lou Ann, and Bob Coward and his wife Carel, one granddaughter, Amanda Michelle Coward, and one brother, Hugh Bevil Means and his wife Vicki, and numerous other relatives and friends.

Ethel Mae Herrington, 89, of Liberty, died Monday, December 1, 2003 at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, December 4, 2003 at Batson Prairie Baptist Church in Batson, Texas. Burial will follow in Guedry Cemetery in Batson, Texas. Visitation will be Wednesday night, December 3, 2003, from 5:00pm to 9:00pm at Allison Funeral Service, Liberty, Texas.
Mrs. Herrington was a native of Batson and had lived there until 1999. She was a school teacher for 35 years and enjoyed quilting, working crossword puzzles, and shelling pecans. She was a sports fan who enjoyed watching the Houston Astros, Houston Rockets, and ice skating.
Ethel Herrington was preceded in death by her mother, Desta Shaw, her husbands, R.W. Hand, and Esker Herrington, one daughter, Judy Lamberth, and a son, Robert Hand.
Mrs. Herrington is survived by, two daughters, Billie Cater, and Sue Galloway and her husband Jamie, nine grandchildren, Trey Phucas, Mandy Graeber, Sean Cater, La Juan Hodges, Charles Lamberth III, Robert Lamberth, Sheri Lamberth, Lee Galloway, and Matthew Galloway, eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, and numerous other friends and relatives.

Lula Delcoure McIntosh, 101, of Nederland, died Sunday, November 30, 2003, at the Spring Creek Manor in Beaumont.

Lula was born April 5, 1902 in Wright County, Missouri to parents; Elza and Irene Dorris Delcoure, a former resident of Enid, OK, and has resided in the Nederland area for the past seven years. She was a homemaker, member of the Baptist faith, and enjoyed knitting and baking pies.
Mrs. McIntosh was preceded in death by her parents, husband: Duffey McIntosh, son: Duane McIntosh, an infant son, brothers: Roy, Everett, Delbert, Charlie, and Jack Delcoure, and sisters: Maudine Jones and Lenora Boone. Pauline F. Massey Larson, 77, of Dayton, died Tuesday, November 25, 2003, at the San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown.

Pauline was born April 28, 1926 in Del Rio, TN., to parents; Douglas and Hallie Perry Massey, a former resident of Cleveland, Ohio, and has resided in the Dayton area for the past 15 years. She was a supervisor at Standard Publishing in Cincinnati for 20 years and had been a restaurant manager, before retiring. She was a member of the Kenefick Southern Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening, and spending time with family and friends.

Gonnie Elizabeth Allen, 65 of Dayton, died on Tuesday at Liberty-Dayton Community Hospital.

Gonnie was born on June 27, 1938 in Oriana, Texas to parents Clio Smith and Dovie Lee Mercer. A homemaker and longtime resident of Dayton, she was a member of Eastgate Church. She enjoyed Crafts and sewing as well as spending time with her family.
Gonnie was preceded in death by her father and her son David Allen. She is survived by her loving husband of 29 years Derrell Ray Allen of Dayton, her mother Dovie Lee Kennedy, daughters, Katrina Lee Clark and husband Ian George, Gonnie Claudette Smith and Pricilla Jean Thompson and husband Tommy Dale, her sons Andrew Raymond Smith and Derrell Vaughn Allen and his wife Tiffany Fujimoto, her stepson Barry K. Allen and Michael Ray Allen and his step-daughter Trudy Jean Allen. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

John Atlee Grantham, 80, of Dayton, died Saturday, November 22, 2003 at Magnolia Place in Liberty after an extended illness.
He had been a resident of Dayton for the past 20 years. He had serviced in the U. S. Armed Forces and worked as an inspector in the oil field.
He is preceded in death by two brothers, Orville and Howard Grantham and by sister, Ruby Burr.
He is survived by brother, Ivy Grantham of Mississippi; sisters: Edna Louise Thacker of Dayton and Eunice Sides of Wildsville, Louisiana. Services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 25, 2003 at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel in Dayton with the Rev. Cecil Grantham officiating. Interment will follow at Palms Memorial Park Cemetery.

Faircloth
Opal Faircloth, 81, of Tarkington Prairie, died Saturday, November 22, 2003 after an extended illness.
She was born August 2, 1922 in Silsbee to parents, Thomas and Vicy Walters. She moved to Beaumont when she was 18 and worked at the Saint Theresa Hospital and did volunteer work at the USO. She married Edward Faircloth in 1947 and they moved to Tarkington Praire where they made their home.
Service for Mrs. Faircloth will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 24, 2003 at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton with Rev. Byron Reeves officiating. Interment will follow at Ryan Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by her brother Grady Walters and wife Doris of Silsbee; her sisters, Muriel Evans of Hull, Evelyn Tucker of Silsbee, and Tommie Jean Gulley of Silsbee; also numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 2:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Sunday at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.
Tyler
Edwin Wiley Tyler, 76, passed away at his home in Liberty, Texas on November 20, 2003 after a brief illness. His wife of 20 years, Lucille Tyler, was by his side.
A native of Commerce, Texas, he was born on April 20, 1927. After graduating high school there, he joined the military and served in the U.S. Navy. Upon completion of his service to his country, Mr. Tyler returned to Texas to pursue a higher education.
Edwin Tyler attended college at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. He completed his degree with a Bachelor in secondary education and then completed his courses to receive a master s degree in education.
His career in teaching began in East Texas and continued there throughout the years. He taught all grades of students and also coached in various athletic programs. Mr. Tyler retired from Beaumont Independent School District in 1984 after 30 years of dedicated service. His dedication to children and love of teaching led him to substitute teach for 20 more years in Liberty County.
In addition to his love of teaching, Mr. Tyler had a passion for music. He bought his first guitar after serving in the Navy and discovered his natural ability to play music. He was self taught and accomplished on the guitar, violin, mandolin, fiddle and piano. He liked to inspire his students to pursuer the gift of music, and often taught lessons to those interested.
Mr. Tyler attended Dayspring Church in Liberty. His special brother-in-law, Rev. V. R. Hylton, Jr. and his church family enjoyed Ed s musical talents each week as he played his instruments.
In his retirement years, Ed and his wife Lucille shared their interests in hunting and gardening. For over 15 years they have enjoyed planting, tending and harvesting their abundant vegetable garden.
Edwin Tyler was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. He is survived by his wife, Lucille Tyler of Liberty, step-son, Bobby Davis and wife Valerie of Dayton; step-daughter, Glenda Sjolander and husband Bill of Dayton; grandchildren: Sherri Clark and husband Bobby of Dayton and their children, Jenni and Katie Clark; Mark Sjolander and wife Bridget and their children, Matthew, Alyssa and Timothy Sjolander, Mindy Sjolander, Heather Currie and husband Craig, Leslie Danaher and husband Kelly, Kimberly Davis and Alan Davis; one brother, Robert Tyler and wife Geneva of Huntsville, nephew, Keith Tyler and family, niece, DeAnne Hullander and family.

Thayer
Gordon Dean Jim Thayer, 78, of Dayton, passed away Thursday, November 13, 2003 at home after an extended illness.
He was born October 31, 1925 in Altoona, Kansas to parents Claude and Eunice Thayer. He spent his younger years in Neodesha, Kansas and starting working for Standard Oil of Kansas. He served during World War II and returned to work in the petroleum industry as an accountant.
Memorial Service for Mr. Thayer will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 22, 2003 at The First Baptist Church in Dayton.
He is survived by his wife Dianne Carney Thayer of Dayton and one son, Bret Thayer and wife Kathy of Utah. He is also survived by one sister Imogene Daniel.

She also enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Marguerite M. Potetz Stansbury, 82 of Liberty, died Wednesday, November 12, 2003 in a Houston Hospital after a brief illness.

Mrs. Stansbury was native of Clara, FL and had lived in Liberty for over 50 years. She was an ambassador for Allison Funeral Service, a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church and the Beta Sigma Phi - Chapter Zeta Zeta of Liberty. She enjoyed big band music, dancing, her grandchildren, and visiting, Marguerite never met a stranger.

Ruby Hill, 70, of Hull, died Monday, November 10, 2003 at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown.
She was a native of Texarkana and had been a long time resident of Hull where she was a member of the Gospel Lighthouse Church in Daisetta. She loved to go fishing and to take care of her pets at home. Services for Mrs. Hill will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 12, 2003 at the Gospel Lighthouse Church in Daisetta with Rev. Nolan Taylor officiating. Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Mrs. O Quinn was a life long resident of the Hull & Daisetta area. She was a retired bookkeeper, a member of the First Baptist Church of Daisetta and the Liberty County Senior Line Dancers. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, dominos, and her grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband Charles O Quinn, daughter Alison O Quinn, and sister Frances Davis.

Louise A. Hammons, 76, of Liberty, died Wednesday, November 5, 2003, at the Liberty Healthcare Center in Liberty.

Louise was born on February 16, 1927 in Galveston, to parents; Fred and Anita L. Koehler Moeller, Former resident of Houston and has resided in Liberty for the past 20 years. She was a homemaker and also was formerly employed by MD Anderson in Houston. She was member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and enjoyed her rose garden, cooking, caring for family and friends, and playing cards and forty two at the Center for Aging in Liberty.

Majors
Liberty civic leader and businessman, Lewie Travis Majors, age 70, died Saturday, November 1, 2003 after a sudden illness. A native of Jacksonville, Texas, Majors moved to Liberty with his parents, E. C. and Verna Hensley Majors, when he was three years old.
Always involved in civic affairs, Majors served as a city councilman for eight years from 1960 until 1968. In 1968 he was elected Mayor of the City of Liberty, an office he held until 1974. While serving as Mayor, he was instrumental in the formation of the Port of Liberty Commission and created the city s slogan First City on the Trinity. He was also a director of the Liberty Chamber of Commerce, member and past president of Liberty Rotary Club and a longtime member of the First Baptist Church.
He owned and operated Lewie s, Inc. for 43 years and was actively involved in the business until his untimely death. Lewie s Inc. is a popular convenience and sporting goods store whose motto if If Lewie s doesn t have it, you don t need it.
Majors is survived by his wife of 49 years, Juneid Newton Majors; daughter Sherri Majors Birdwell and husband John of Liberty; son Terry Travis Majors of Liberty and daughter Joanna Majors Hacker and husband Chris of Marshall. His grandchildren, Jeanne Marie Birdwell, Lew Birdwell, Jill Birdwell, Julie Birdwell, Sydney Anne Hacker and Summer Renee Hacker, also survive him.
Visitation with the family will be 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Sunday, November 2, 2003 at Allison Funeral Service, 1101 North Travis in Liberty, Texas. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM, Monday, November 3 at First Baptist Church, 602 Main Street, Liberty. Reverend Jerry Johnson will officiate.
Serving as pallbearers will be John Birdwell, Lew Birdwell, Chris Hacker, Sonny Loftin, Fred Majors, Greg Majors, Kenny Majors and Paul Newton.
