CORRIGAN - Funeral services for Norene Maxey, 63, of Diboll were held Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, from the Corrigan Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Buster Griggs officiating. Interment followed in Union Springs Cemetery. Ms. Maxey was born Feb. 25, 1939 in the New Willard community of Polk County and died Tuesday night, Jan. 7, in a Lufkin hospital. She was a member of Union Springs Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Edith Maxey; sister, Barbara Watts and brother-in-law, Tommy Tatum. Survivors include her brothers and sisters-in-law, Johnny and Armatha Maxey of Diboll and Howard and Betty Maxey of Leggett; sisters and brother-in-law, Freddie Jo and Cleo "PeeWee" Purvis of Corrigan and Margaret Tatum of Hemphill; and numerous nieces and nephews. CORRIGAN - Funeral services for Izora Kirkwood, 99, of Corrigan were held Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, from Mayo Baptist Church of Corrigan, with the Rev. Travis Hulett officiating. Interment followed in Union Springs Cemetery. Mrs. Kirkwood was born Feb. 28, 1903 in Colmesneil and died Tuesday, Jan. 7, at her residence. She was a homemaker and a member of Mayo Chapel Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star chapter. Survivors include her grandchildren, Mary A. Gray Smart of Houston, Sue Gray Tribble of Los Angeles, Calif., and David C. Gray Jr., Alvin L. Gray, Johnny L. Gray and Linda E. Gray, all of Houston; daughter-in-law, Dora Gray of Houston; sister, Allie Route of Woodville; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great-grandchild. O.R. "Bugger" Kimes
LIVINGSTON - Funeral services for O.R. "Bugger" Kimes, 75, were held Monday, Jan. 13, 2003 from Hickory Grove Church, with Bro. Wayne Landrum officiating. Burial followed in Peebles Cemetery. Mr. Kimes died Friday, Jan. 10, at his residence in Goodrich. He was born Nov. 17, 1927 in Goodrich, the son of Tom and Jimmie Edmonds Kimes. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was preceded in death by his father, Tom Hill Kimes; mother, Jimmie Lee Edmonds; brothers, Harris Lamar "Sam" Kimes, Sammy Jo Hughen and Milton Kimes and sisters, Billie Jo Turner and Patsy Ruth Yancy. Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Luther L. "Pete" and Diane Kimes of Huntsville; sisters, Eula Pearl Gay and Jeanette Coleman, both of Goodrich and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Louie Hill Jr., Preston Kimes, Doug Blackerby, Stanley Kimes, Sammy Kimes and David Kimes. LIVINGSTON - Funeral services for Edna Elizabeth Williams, 90, were held Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, from the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Frank Hood officiating. Burial followed in Menard Chapel Cemetery. Mrs. Williams died Friday, Jan. 10, in Pineridge Health Care in Livingston. She was born March 5, 1912 in Livingston, the daughter of Calvin and Nancy Elizabeth Murphy Duff. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alton Edgar Williams; daughter, Trudy Ailene Pillow; nine brothers and three sisters. Survivors include her sons, Melvin Williams of Schwab City, Keith Wayne Williams of Humble and Alton Edgar Williams of Highlands; daughters, Myrtle Shepherd of Pasadena, Vivian Rae Johnson of Trinity and Florence Elizabeth Meachum of Houston; brother, Sam Duff of Schwab City; 16 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Dorris Bozarth
LIVINGSTON - Funeral services for Dorris Bozarth, 83, were held Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, from Blanchard Baptist Church, with the Rev. Fred Alford and the Rev. Royce Pennington officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia Cemetery in Onalaska. Mrs. Bozarth died Saturday, Jan. 11, in Methodist Hospital in Houston. She was born Nov. 21, 1919 in Milam County, the daughter of Charlie and Allie Mae Sides Baker. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Velma Vollis. Survivors include her husband, Grover Bozarth; son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Donna Bozarth of Lawton, Okla.; daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie Jo and Robert Kauffman of West Minister, Md.; brothers, Charles O. Baker of Austin and Raye Baker of Oklahoma City, Okla.; grandsons, Robert L. Allen of Albuquerque, N.M. and Thomas R. Allen of Tyler and great-granddaughter, Amanda Dawn Allen of Albuquerque, N.M. Burial followed in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Trinity. Mr. Weaver died Sunday, Jan. 12, at his residence in Trinity. He was born Aug. 6, 1934 in Houston, the son of Jesse Elvington Weaver and Vergie Ethel Sales Weaver. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, James Weaver-Redmond and brothers, Marion Weaver and Leland Weaver. Survivors include his wife, Kaye; sons, Leroy U. Weaver Jr. of Kingwood, Richard L. Marshall Cain Sr.
LIVINGSTON - Marshall Cain Sr., 76, of the Segno community, died on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at his residence. Services were held Tuesday, Jan. 14, from Pace Funeral Home, with the Rev. Rex Hendrix and the Rev. Mitchell Murphy officiating. Interment followed in Magnolia Hill Cemetery. Mr. Cain was born on Aug. 2, 1926 in Polk County to parents John Wesley and Jessie Summerall Cain. He married Mary Alice Gay in 1948 in Segno. Mr. Cain was a retired oil pipeline construction worker and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II. Survivors include his wife, Mary Alice Cain of Segno; two sons, Marshall Cain Jr. and wife Kay of Livingston and John Cain and wife Denise of Livingston; daughter, Sissie Hendrix and husband Gary of Livingston; one brother, Fredrick Wayne Cain of Livingston; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. LIVINGSTON - Etha Rheat Cummings, 85, of Livingston died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, in Memorial Medical Center - Livingston. Services were held Wednesday, Jan. 15, from Soda Baptist Church, with the Rev. Frank Hood officiating. Interment followed in Bluff Creek Cemetery. Mrs. Cummings was born on Nov. 15, 1917 in Mt. Enterprise to parents S.J. and Emma Adams Burks. She had been a Polk County resident since 1936 and on May 11, 1938 married Tom Cummings. She was a long time member of Soda Baptist Church, where she was very active and held many offices within the church over the years. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Anita Darlene Cummings. Survivors include her husband, Tom Cummings of Livingston; sister, Anita Tullos of Cleveland and many nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Tommy Gene Clifton, Donnis Walters, Randy Walters, Matt Blanton, Kevin Ellis, Thomas Adams and Kenneth Shepherd. Pace Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Bessie Marie Johnson
LIVINGSTON - Bessie Marie Johnson, 63, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, in Memorial Medical Center - Livingston. Graveside services were held Thursday, Jan. 16, from Gord Creek Cemetery in New Waverly. She was born May 11, 1939 in Coldspring, the daughter of Jesse and Ida Lee Bone McKinze, both of whom preceded her in death. Survivors include her husband, Glen Johnson; sons, Bobby Johnson, Guy Johnson, Thomas Johnson of Segno and Richard Johnson and Kenneth Johnson of Livingston; daughter, Janice Appell; sisters, Ollene Murry and Sue Bartee; brothers, Van McKinze, Vernon McKinze and D.A. McKinze; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Cochran Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Velma Eunice Buie
DAYTON - Velma Eunice (Jackson) Buie, 80, of Conroe died on Monday, Jan. 13, 2003, in Park Manor Nursing Home in Conroe. She was born on Jan. 20, 1922 in Tarkington Prairie, where she grew up with her six older siblings. At a very early age, around 6, she came to know Christ as her personal savior while attending Rural Shade Baptist Church. She graduated from Tarkington High School and pursued her interest in religion while attending Bible School in Houston. In May of 1941, she married Leldon Garland Stephenson and they had two daughters, Diane and Lelda. She continued to share her faith and her Biblical knowledge by teaching Sunday school, playing her accordion and being actively involved in her church and community. But, more importantly, she made sure there was daily devotion around the dining table, which became a strong foundation for their Christian family. Mrs. Buie previously resided in Livingston, where she was an active volunteer in the Senior Citizens Center, whether serving as a clerk in the country store or involved in "clowning" or pursuing her passion for oil painting. She was an avid gardener who was particularly fond of roses and frequently took first place ribbons in competition, but also took floral arrangements to shut-ins on a regular basis. She was known as a woman of great faith who always had a smile and a wink for those she came in contact with. She was the daughter of the late Tom Jackson and the late Bettie Mills Jackson. She is survived by her two daughters, Diane Stanley of Montgomery and Lelda C. Duckworth of Birmingham, Ala. A graveside service was held Wednesday, Jan. 15, from Ryan Cemetery. Pace-Stancil Funeral Home of Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Lou Lowther
CORRIGAN - Funeral services for Mary Lou Lowther, 85, of Diboll were held Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, from the Corrigan Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Buster Griggs and Pastor John Riley officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Chester. Mrs. Lowther was born Sept. 18, 1917 in the Hortense community of Polk County and died Tuesday, Jan. 14, in her residence in Diboll. She worked as a nurse in the old Camden Hospital, then retired to be a wife and loving mother. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Diboll. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Hicks and Nettie Lee (Wallace) Beaty; her husband, Cyrus H. Lowther in 1997; her brother, J.L. Beaty and sister, Lois Lee Beaty. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, John and Theresa Lowther and Thomas and Rena Lowther, all of Diboll; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Sue Beaty of Diboll and Thomas Gene and Donetta Beaty of Corpus Christi; and grandchildren, Julie Lowther, Randy Lowther, Dustin Lowther, Kimberly Lowther, Colin Lowther, Adam Lowther and Benjamin Lowther. ONALASKA - Graveside services for Gaston Vernon Olive, 94, were held Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, from Magnolia Cemetery in Onalaska. Masonic graveside rites were conducted by Trinity Lodge No. 14. Mr. Olive died Monday, Jan. 13, in Livingston Convalescent Center. He was born Aug. 6, 1908 in Odell, the son of John Amon Olive and Daisy D. Simmons Olive. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters. Survivors include his wife, Frances; son, Lester Vernon Olive of Onalaska; daughter and son-in-law, Daisy Ann and Harold Long of Buffalo; grandson, Chase Rainosherk and granddaughters, Lora Nolen and Tara Terry. LIVINGSTON - Mother Iva Jane Holley Prescott, 99, of Houston, previously of Livingston, died on Jan. 8, 2003 in Houston. Interment followed in St. Andrews Cemetery in Onalaska. Mrs. Prescott was born May 3, 1903 in Fordice, the daughter of Marcus Holley and Margrette Gipson. She was a member of the Methodist Church. Interment followed in Stryker Cemetery. Mrs. Ferguson was born Oct. 20, 1925 in Franklin County, Ga. and died on Wednesday, Jan. 15, in a Lufkin hospital. She was a member of the Corrigan Church of Christ and a homemaker. Her parents, Clint and Leslie Anne Boone; her husband, Jimmy Ferguson and son, Dwight Ferguson, preceded her in death. Bernice Parker Carlton
CORRIGAN - Funeral services for Bernice Parker Carlton, 79, of the Alabama Creek community in Trinity County, were held Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, from the Corrigan Funeral Home Chapel in Corrigan, with the Rev. Robert Langford officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Trinity County. Mrs. Carlton was born Sept. 30, 1924 in Lewisville, the daughter of Stella and Gordon Parker, and died Wednesday, Jan. 15, in Lufkin. She was preceded in death by her parents; and three sisters and three brothers, Hortince Bruel of Fort Worth, Dixie Thompson of Carrolton, Marie Feaster of Lewisville, Buddy Parker of Lewisville, Alvin Parker of Lewisville and Darrell Parker of Dallas. Mrs. Carlton was a homemaker and beloved wife. She was a member of Wakefield Baptist Church. Her husband, Van Carlton, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends survive. Pallbearers were Micho Hales, James Hines, Greg Hales, Lynn Havard, Billy Carlton and Sam Carlton.

Petra Maria Sanchez
LIVINGSTON - Petra Maria Sanchez, 92, died on Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at her residence in Livingston. She was born in Aarayan, Panama on Feb. 22, 1910. She is preceded in death by her parents; four sons, Antonio Sanchez, Pedro Sanchez, Reuben Sanchez and Raphiel Sanchez and one daughter, Josephine Marie Espinosa. She is survived by her husband, Nicanor Sanchez; daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Lonnie Ward of Livingston; son, Danny Sanchez of Dallas; daughter, Ida Sanchez of Panama and two grandsons, Robert Norris of Austin and Tommy Norris of Livingston. LIVINGSTON - Dylan Wayne Castilaw Scott, age 2, of Livingston died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, in a Houston hospital. Services were held Saturday, Jan. 18, at Pace Funeral Home, with the Rev. Fred Alford and Matthew Duston officiating. Interment followed in Bold Springs Cemetery. Dylan was born on April 12, 2000 in Livingston. Elvin Junior Simons
LIVINGSTON - Elvin Junior Simons, 76, of Livingston died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, in Diboll. Services were held Tuesday, Jan. 21, from Pace Funeral Home, with the Rev. Eric Garrett officiating. Interment followed in Bluff Creek Cemetery, with military honors provided by VFW Post 8568. Mr. Simons was born on April 23, 1926 in Trinity County to George Washington and Sally Baker Simons, both of whom preceded him in death. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving two honorable discharges. He was a retired auto mechanic. He was preceded in death by one son, Robert Eugene Simons. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Georgia of Livingston; son, Charles Simons and wife Carla of Livingston; daughters, Patricia LaRoche and friend Dennis Wells of Onalaska, Marie Smith and husband Herman of Arp and Sally Simm and husband Junior McGaha of New Caney; 17 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

Catherine Seward Harrop
LIVINGSTON - A memorial service for Catherine Seward Harrop was held Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, lakeside at her home in the Idlewilde subdivision in Onalaska. Mrs. Harrop died peacefully in her sleep at home on Jan. 16. She was born May 25, 1926 in Nashville, Tenn. to Dr. Douglas Crockett and Sarah Park House Seward. She attended Miss Peabody's Day School where she met her lifelong partner, James Henry Harrop at the age of 2. She graduated from Vanderbilt University where she was an active member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. On Jan. 19, 1948, Jim and Katie were married in the First Presbyterian Church of Nashville and celebrated their golden wedding anniversary one day before Jimmy's death in 1998. "Kitty," as she was known to many of her close friends and family, moved in 1953 to Houston, where Jim had taken a position with American General Life Insurance Company. Mrs. Harrop was forever a tireless advocate for children with disabilities. She was instrumental in changing laws that affected children of the Briarwood School and later worked for Region IV writing grants to help special needs children. She was known as a wonderful and loving mother to her daughter, Sarah Adeline "Sally" Harrop. Her many hobbies included sewing, smocking, candymaking, cooking and doll collecting. Those who knew her knew she was never without projects or food in the oven. She was an active member and officer of the Assistance League of Houston for many years. Throughout her life, she attended and served selflessly the First Presbyterian Churches of Nashville, Houston and Livingston. She loved the water and sun. Fond memories included deep-sea fishing on "Tres Bones" in the Gulf of Mexico, many lazy summers at the lakehouse on Camp Creek Lake, and enjoying her retirement on the shores of Lake Livingston, where she lived for the last 18 years. After moving to Onalaska, she was active with the Polk County Folklife Festival and was among the first citizens to recognize the importance of the landscape and renovation of the Polk County Courthouse. She had a special fondness for the success and growth of the ministry and mission of the Cho-Yeh Camp and Conference Center in nearby Livingston. She endeared herself to the staff at Camp Cho-Yeh and was affectionately called "Aunt Kitty" by the summer staff there. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Douglas Seward of Nashville; husband, James H. Harrop of Onalaska and brother, Douglas C. Seward Jr. of Houston. Survivors include her daughter, Sarah Adeline Harrop of Onalaska; sister, Dorothy Anne Swiggart and husband Nashville; niece, Sarah Higgins; nephew, Jim Swiggart, godchild, Lenore Mann; special friends, Harry Grist, Kathy Moore, Kathy Nobles, Mary Dodd, Jesse and Betty McRoy; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Lee Poe officiating. Mr. Smith was born on July 16, 1923 in Hyman to parents T.C. and Lillian Rawlings Smith. He was a retired security guard for Red Barn Builders. He was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Smith had been a Livingston resident for over 30 years and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Livingston. Survivors include two sons, Bobby Smith of Houston and Michael Lynn Smith of Lovelady; two daughters, Mary Ann Smith of Houston and Patricia Ann Meschkat of Houston; sister, Dixie Tankersley of Midland; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Pace Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Billy Joe Thigpen
LIVINGSTON - Billy Joe Thigpen, 45, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, in Memorial Medical Center - Livingston. He was born July 20, 1957 in Fort Worth, the son of Travis Wayne Thigpen and Marie Ann Thigpen. He served in the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by his father and stepfather, "Moose" Moss. Survivors include his wife, Debra Thigpen of Livingston; mother, Marie Ann Moss of San Antonio; daughters, Angel Dawn Thigpen of Livingston, Amanda Gail Thigpen of Livingston and Devin Marie Thigpen of Fort Worth; sons, Jerry Russell of Houston, Sammy Wayne Thigpen of Houston and Billy Roger Thigpen of Missouri; granddaughter, Anna Marie Markowski of Livingston and brother, Sammy Wayne Wead of Livingston. Cochran Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Tomy C. "Popeye" Wilson
HUNTSVILLE - Tomy C. "Popeye" Wilson, 54, of Goodrich died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, in Cleveland. Services were held Friday, Jan. 24, from the Huntsville Funeral Home Chapel, with interment following in Dodge Cemetery. Mr. Wilson was born April 1, 1948 in Huntsville. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Vietnam, where he received the Purple Heart. He was employed in the construction business. He was preceded in death by his father, David Wilson, and grandparents, Charlie and Devilla Flournoy and Willie and Hattie Wilson. Survivors include his mother, Loretta Wilson; sons, William "Billy" Wilson and Tomy A. "Andy" Wilson; daughter, Frances Ann Wilson; one grandson; seven granddaughters; brothers, Tony Wilson, Jay Wilson and David Lee Wilson and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were William Wilson, Gary Fountain, Charlie Hill, Tommy Marshall, Bobby Baker and Steve Haynes. Honorary pallbearer was Larry Flournoy.

Roy W. Glover
LIVINGSTON - Roy W. Glover, 62, of Onalaska died on Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, in Memorial Medical Center - Livingston. He was born on June 2, 1942 in Mineral Wells, the son of Wilburn E. Glover and Daisy Marie Gandee Glover, both of whom preceded him in death. Mr. Glover served in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1962. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Taylor Glover of Onalaska; son, Wilber Glover of Mineral Wells; four daughters, Brandy Glover and Jodie Frenzel of Grand Prairie and Stacey Beck and Georgia Beck of Onalaska; three brothers, Vernon Glover of Mineral Wells, Calvin Glover of Tyler and James Glover of Mineral Wells; one sister, Linda Atkins of Mineral Wells and six grandchildren, Rachel Glover, Ray Glover, Brandy Rogers, Nicki Frenzel, Garrett Palmer and Kristin Gannon. A memorial service is planned. Cochran Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
