Roy Deviney
Roy Whitte Deviney, 86, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at a Fort Worth hospital. Services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Brown’s Funeral Chapel, Atoka, Oklahoma. Burial was in Farris Cemetery, Farris, Oklahoma. Mr. Deviney was born Oct. 25, 1916, in Gainesville to Samuel William and Minnie Perry Deviney. He attended school in Boswell, Oklahoma. Roy and Lorene Sain were married June 20, 1940, in Atoka. He worked in mechanical maintenance for General Dynamics of Fort Worth for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorene, on Dec. 15, 1984; parents, Samuel and Minnie Deviney; brother, Bill Deviney; and sister, Edna. Survivors include his children, Sue Priddy and husband, Jim, of Houston, Sam Deviney and wife, Mary, of Fort Worth and Ron Deviney and wife, Darla, of Springtown; grandchildren, Melissa Mangham, Patti Priddy, Randy Priddy, Elisa Holmes, Jason Deviney, Lori Adams and Rhonda Deviney; nine great-grandchildren; numerous other relatives; and many dear friends.

Billy Irwin
Billy Dale Irwin, 60, died Monday, March 31, 2003, in a local medical center. Open visitation until 4 p.m. Friday. Mr. Irwin was born Feb. 16, 1943, in Fort Worth. Survivors include his wife, Janet Irwin of Fort Worth; son, Brian Irwin of Fort Worth; daughters, Jeanette Melton of Saginaw and Donna Dodd of Saginaw; nephew, Jimmy Jones of Lakeside; and three granddaughters.

Donald Hall, Jr.
Donald Morris Hall, Jr., 66, a retired field expediter, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003 in Azle. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Ash Creek Cemetery in Azle under the direction of Shannon North Funeral Chapel. Mr. Morris was the son of Donald Sr. and Camilla DeVeau Hall. He grew up, attended school, lived and worked in the Fort Worth area. He retired from Textron Corp. locally. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and talking to people all over the country and the world as “N5DUO” on his ham radios. He was a member of the American Radio League for many years. He played bass at local bluegrass festivals. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Scott Hall. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Ramsey Hall; children, Linda, Patricia, Kathy, Lorie, Susan, Terry and Steve; siblings, Linda Johnson, Pricilla Johnson, Melissia Tinney and Nick Hall.

Sarah Leamon
Sarah Leamon, 77, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003 at her granddaughter’s home surrounded by family and friends. She fought a long courageous battle with congestive heart failure. Mrs. Leamon was born July 8, 1925 in Richland. Survivors include her husband, J.W. Leamon of Granbury; son, Tommy D. Leamon, Sr. of Springtown and Mark Leamon of Allen; grandchildren, Tommy D. Leamon, Jr. and wife, Lisa, of Austin, Kelley D. Mansell and husband, Larry, of Weatherford, Shawn Leamon of Granbury and Benjamin Leamon of Allen; great-grandchildren, Kacey Howell of Weatherford, Zackary Logue of Weatherford and Brandi Leamon of Azle.

Charlotte Clemones
Charlotte Clemones, 42, died Friday, March 28, 2003 in Azle. Services will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2003 at North Main Church of God in Weatherford. Mrs. Clemones was born Feb. 6, 1961 in Macon, Georgia. She was a loving daughter. Her daughter preceded her in death. Survivors include her father, Charles Clemones and wife, Arlene of Azle; mother, Jo Ann Benbow of Florida; sisters, Charlene York of Seattle, Washington and Connie Jo Wilson of Vidor; niece, Renee Patterson; nephews, Jerry Douglas and Shane Wilson.

Chester Walker
Chester E. Walker, Jr., 70, a retired automotive assembler, died Monday, March 24, 2003 at his home in Mineral Wells. Services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Bosley Cemetery in Palo Pinto County under the direction of Baum-Carlock-Bumgardner. Mr. Walker was born June 24, 1932 in Gordon, the son of Chester Sr. and Ida Davis Walker. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Walker of Mineral Wells; daughter, Sandy Swaim and husband, Brian; son, Tracy Walker and wife, Tab; stepson, Kevin Roark; ;mother, Ida Walker; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers; four sisters; and many nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to Odyssey Home Hospice.

N. Edith Preslar
N. Edith Preslar, 90, died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, in Marlow, Oklahoma. Services were held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Greenwood Chapel. Services will be officiated by her nephew, the Rev. Reginald Bridges. Burial was in Greenwood Memorial Park. Mrs. Preslar was born Nov. 12, 1912, in Hastings, Oklahoma and was proud of her Native American heritage. She was married to Hosea Preslar. She lived and worked for most of her life in Fort Worth. A nurse, Edith retired from All Saints Hospital and then continued to work for years as a private-duty nurse at the Fireside retirement home. She joined her granddaughter, Susie Preslar McKenzie, and family, living first in Utah and then in California. In 1999, she moved to Marlow, Oklahoma, where she lived out her life near her family of origin, with her sister, Mary, as her roommate. Throughout her life, church was important to her and she was always actively involved. She was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church. She was an avid gardener and “rock hound” who loved camping and fishing. She and her husband loved to play cards and dominos with friends. She remained actively involved with her close family throughout her life. The generous way she saw people and her zest for life have enriched us all and are missed, but not forgotten. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hosea Preslar; two sisters, Minnie Bridges and Pearl Morrison; two brothers, R.T. “Bunch” Willis and Buster Willis; and a granddaughter, Carol Lee Preslar. Survivors include her sister, Mary Shilling of Oklahoma; brother, Earl Willis of Oklahoma; granddaughters, Beth Preslar Woeltjen of Florida and Susie Preslar McKenzie, her husband, Allan, and their daughters, Eyde, Jodi and Ashlei of California; and much-loved nieces, nephews and their families. Anna Martin
Anna E. “Nanny” Martin, 86, a retired licensed vocational nurse, died Thursday, March 27, 2003 at an Azle hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 7, at Biggers Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Emerald Hills Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 4 at the funeral home. Mrs. Martin was born Dec. 19, 1916 in Gilbert Arkansas. She was a licensed vocational nurse for Boulevard Hospital before her retirement in 1975. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother who lived an exemplary life and will be remembered as an example of God’s love. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dean P. Martin, son, James Martin and grandsons, Sam Martin, Jr. and James Martin. Survivors include her son, Sam D. Martin and wife, Alma Lee of Springtown; daughter, Carolyn Johnson and husband, Forrest of Springtown; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren, Christian Beck who knew Nanny would always have a snack and Jaci Carter who was the light of Nanny’s life.

Anes Roberson
Services for Anes E. Roberson of Springtown will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at White’s Funeral Home Springtown Chapel. Visitation will be held from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Roberson was born in Nehri, Hood County, Texas at home on May 27, 1920. He grew up attending rural schools in Hood County. After completing military service in World War II, he attended G.I. Agricultural school for 2½ years. While employed with Mitchell Energy, he attended a math seminar and was among a few that passed the final exam. He built a successful dairy business with father-in-law, Eli Hart, prior to entering a career in the oil field. During World War II, Mr. Roberson served on the USS Indiana in the Navy. As a decorated veteran, he fought in seven major battles in the South Pacific. His ship was anchored in Tokyo Bay when the Japanese surrendered. After the war, he worked on the family farm in the dairy business for a few years. In his late 20s he entered a career in the oil field and spent the next 35 years as a roughneck, driller, and tool pusher. He retired from Mitchell Energy in 1983. Mr. Roberson and his wife, Mary Ellen, spent about 20 years in the west Texas town of Andrews. He coached Little League Baseball and served as an assisistant Boy Scout Master. His service to young men had an impact on many lives. During 1973, the couple returned to the family farm in Springtown. He completed his career in the o il field and began retirement. Since retirement, Mr. Roberson has been active in VFW, Senior Citizens, and church. He served in several offices in the VFW and performed in every VA Hospital in Texas as part of the District 21 Road Show. At the senior center, he exercised his mind through games and his body with walking. As an expert 42 domino player, he won many trophies with Mary Ellen and Kerby as partners. The Lord’s Acre of the Springtown First United Methodist Church enjoyed his vegetable cooking for the past 10 years. He enjoyed the praise and worship music at the “Wednesday Night Live” services at the Methodist Chruch. He truly was a part of the “greatest generation.” Mr. Roberson led an active and full life as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mary Ellen Hart Roberson of Springtown and four children, Aaron Roberson and wife, Pixie of Fort Worth, Ford Roberson and wife, Catherine of De Soto, Andrea Hungerford and husband, Rick of Springtown, and Kerby Roberson of Long Beach California; a brother, Refford Roberson of Wichita Falls; and sisters, Juanita Parker of Tolar, and Margaret Todd of Weatherford; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Jack McMurry
Jack David McMurry, 77, died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, in Fort Worth. Services were held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Greenwood Chapel. Burial was in Azle Land Cemetery under the direction of Greenwood Funeral Home. Jack was born Sept. 27, 1925, in Fort Worth. He served in the United States Navy during World War II as a seaman first class from Sept. 11, 1943, until April 1, 1946. Mr. McMurry was manager for Leonard Brothers Department Store and Monnig’s Department Store for many years and retired from retail management in 1991. Mr. McMurry was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Juanita McMurry; brother, Harold; and children, Jackie Abel and Rickey McMurry. Survivors include his wife, Dolores McMurry of Lakeside; children, Michael Wicker, Jr. and wife, Regina, Terry Wicker and wife, Brenda, Teresa Gonzales and husband, Vincent, and Scott Wicker and wife, Donna, all of Tarrant County; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law; brother, J.D. McMurry and wife, Bunny, of New York; sister, Margaret Bisbee of Fort Worth; and many nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.

Dona Nobles
Dona Nobles, 77, a homemaker, died Monday, May 19, 2003. Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Arlington. Burial was in Moore Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Nobles was born Feb. 27, 1926, in Kerens. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Nobles, Jr. Survivors include her sons, Gordon Nobles and wife, Laura, of Grand Prairie, and Stanley Nobles and wife, Joni, of Arlington; daughter, Cathy Hunter and husband, Phillip, of Arlington; sisters, Belle Marshall of Fort Worth and Maxine Eckelman of Arlington; brothers, Jim Pierce of Springtown and Joe Pierce of Helotes; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Carolyn Hackney
Carolyn Greeney Hackney, a retired corporate secretary, died Monday, May 19, 2003, in Azle. Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday in Azleland Cemetery under the direction of White’s Azle Funeral Home. Mrs. Hackney was a longtime resident of Azle. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Azle, vice president of Road Runner Square Dance Club, an avid golfer and the very best Mom. Survivors include her beloved husband, James Hackney; sister, Betty Lou Atherton and husband, Bill; stepchildren, Ashley Patricia and Michael Frank; many extended family members; and many friends.

Marion Burdick
Marion Burdick, 92, a retired restaurant manager for Wild Onion Steakhouse, died Sunday, May 25, 2003, in Azle. Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Mount Olivet Chapel. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Marion Burdick was born Nov. 30, 1910, in Fulsom, New Mexico. Survivors include her daughter, Elise Pigg and husband, Billy, of Azle; grandchildren, Elise Erter and husband, Bill, Ann R. Pigg, Jeannine Wilbur and Tab Pigg and wife, Lisa, all of Azle; great-grandchildren, Clay Trammell and wife, Heidi, of Grand Prairie, Michael Wilbur and wife, Sofia, David Wilbur, Benjamin Stapleton, Shelbe Stapleton and Paul Foster, all of Azle; and great-great-grandchildren, Mari Carmen Wilbur and David Daniel Wilbur, both of Azle. Plase Smith
Plase Smith, 86, died Wednesday, May 21, 2003, in Azle. Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at White’s Funeral Home, Springtown. Burial was in Annis Chapel Cemetery. Mr. Smith was a member of Community Bible Fellowship Church. His wife, Ferol, died in February 2003. Survivors include his daughters, Faye Mote and husband, Gerald, and Bonnie Alewine and husband, Nat; sons, B.J. Shugart and wife, Susan, P.M. Shugart and wife, Carol, and Danny Smith and wife, Sandy; sisters, Willamae Panciera and Joana Walker and husband, Jerry; 16 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Dave Hull
Dave Hull, 67, a retired mechanic, died Monday, May 19, 2003, in Weatherford. Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at North Main Church of God. Burial was in Johnson Cemetery under the direction of Galbreaith-Pickard Funeral Chapel. Mr. Hull was born July 22, 1935, in Parker County. He was a former truck driver and a member of the Church of God. A sister, Linda Hull; brother, Robert Hull; and grandson, Clint Fisher, preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Peggy Hull of Weatherford; daughters, Ranae Fisher and husband, David, of Lakeside and Lanie Harrison and husband, Pat, of Weatherford; sons, Charles Ivan Hull, Cordell Hull, Hank Hull and wife, Joy, Jody Ellis and wife, Rexine, and Barney Ellis and wife, Ramona, all of Weatherford, and Jerry Ellis and wife, Tammy, of White Settlement; sisters, Ollie Moore and husband, Rick, and Ivannell Moon and husband, Gerald; brothers, James Ivan Hull, Edd Hull and wife, Frankie, Manley Hull and wife, Linda, and Marvin Hull and wife, Ruthann, all of Weatherford; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Mary Cracas
Mary Ann Cracas, 85, a loving mother and grandmother, died Sunday, May 18, 2003 at a Lake Worth nursing center. Services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Biggers Funeral Chapel. Mrs. Cracas was born Nov. 1, 1917, in Brooklyn, New York, and has been an area resident since 1992. She was secretary for the Internal Revenue Service prior to her retirement in 1991. Survivors include her daughter, Margaret Lovier and her husband, Rick, of Lakeside; sister, Catherine Tripoli of Chesterfield, New Jersey; grandchildren, Rick Alexander Lovier, Zachariah Lee Lovier, and Michelle Rose Lovier.

Kathleen Betts
Kathleen Laverne Betts, 80, of Azle, died Saturday, May 17, 2003 in San Antonio. Services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2003 at White’s Azle Chapel. Burial was in Azleland Cemetery. Mrs. Betts was born April 16, 1923 in Orange County, Ind. and moved to Texas in the early 1970’s. She retired from La Quinta as head housekeeper 16 years ago. A 20 year resident of Azle, she moved to San Antonio in 1998 to be with her family after her husband’s death. Mrs. Betts loved gardening, fishing, and cooking. She was a member of the Monticello (Indiana) Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James D. Betts, brothers, Basil, Bertice, James, Russell, and Randall. Survivors include her daughter, Annette Purcell and husband, Richard; grandchildren, Kimberly Baker and Edward Baker and wife, Yvette, all of San Antonio; brother, Earl Speer, Jr. of Leesburg, Florida; sister, Betty Dunn of Monticello, Indiana.

Annie Spurrier
Annie Lail Spurrier, 104, died Monday, May 19, 2003 in Azle. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 22, 2003 at Azleland Cemetery under the direction of White’s Azle Funeral Home. Mrs. Spurrier was a resident of Azle since 1953. She was preceded in death by sons, W.G., W.F. and Arnold; and grandson, Ricky. Survivors: Sons, Bob Spurrier of Burleson, Jack Spurrier and wife, Sally of Azle; daughter, Melba Geeslin; daughters-in-law, Helen Spurrier of Azle, Betty Spurrier of Yoakum, Wilma Spurrier of Cayton, California; 19 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Christian Burmeister
Christian J. Burmeister, 75, a retired engineer, died Monday, May 19, 2003 in Azle. Graveside service were held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Azleland Cemetery. Mr. Burmeister was a resident of Azle since 1983. A veteran of the Korean conflict, he retired as a Sergeant from the U.S. Air Force. He retired from Lockheed-Martin about 20 years ago. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fredrick and Dorathea Burmeister. Survivors include his wife, Krista Burmeister of Azle and a sister, Carol Burmeister of North Carolina.
