Billy Ray Hart
Billy Ray Hart, 78, died Wednesday, July 9, 2003, in Fort Worth, leaving behind his wife of 57 years.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at River Oaks Baptist Church with Pastor Jim Lemons officiating.
Mr. Hart was born March 6, 1925, in Sweetwater. He served in the United States military retiring after 20 years of service as a recruiting officer for the Air Force. He was a member of the River Oaks Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Hart; sons, Ronny Hart of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Donny Hart of River Oaks and David Hart of Fort Worth; daughter, Tammy George of Azle; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and sister, Doris Tomlin of Odessa.
Walter Bagwell
Walter E. Bagwell, 90, a retired farmer from Azle, died Wednesday, July 9, 2003 at his home.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Aledo-Brown Cemetery. White s Funeral Home made the arrangements.
Mr. Bagwell was born November 21, 1912 in Runnels County. He was an 18-year resident of the Azle area. He was preceded in death by his wife, Fairy Violet Bagwell, in 1995 and son, Keneth Bagwell in 1993.
Survivors include his sons, L.T. Bagwell of Azle, Larry Walter Bagwell of Piedmont, Okla.; daughter, Lareta Ann Forsyth of Livingston; 17 grandchildren; and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren.
Grady Smith
Grady Lee Smith, 68, a retired roofer, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at a Fort Worth hospital.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 11, at Azleland Cemetery under the direction of White s Azle Funeral Home.
Mr. Smith was born March 9, 1935, in Fort Worth. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard Lee Smith and Emma Travis; brother, Glin Smith; and sister, Lillie Rivers.
Survivors include his brothers, Raymond W. Smith and wife, Wilma of Springtown, Calvin Smith and wife, Ann, of White Settlement; sister, Doris Svetlik and husband, Marvin, of Keller; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Alma Griggs
Alma Bernice Griggs, 77, a homemaker, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003, in Tyler, following a brief illness.
Services were held at 2 p.m. at Chapel of Chimes Laurel Land Memorial Park Fort Worth. Burial was in Laurel Land Memorial Park.
Mrs. Griggs was the loving mother of four, grandmother of eight and great-grandmother of three. Alma Bernice Wilson was born in Paris, Tennessee on Feb. 13, 1926. She later resided in Germany, Rio Vista, Mt. Vernon and Ft Worth. She was married in 1942 to her husband of 45 years, Frank Griggs. She was greatly loved and will be missed by all her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters, a brother, and grandson.
Survivors include Brenda Smith of Mt. Vernon, Johnny and Laurette Griggs of Fort Worth, Kennie and Debbie Griggs of Azle, Ronnie Griggs and Missi Wood of Cleburne; and numerous grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
J.W. Heller
J.W. Heller, 24 of Euless, died peacefully at his home on the morning of July 13, 2003.
Services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Forest Ridge Funeral Home in Hurst. Burial was in Lonesome Dove Cemetery.
J.W. Heller was born November 9, 1978. He was a manufactured home salesman.
Survivors include his mother, Cheryl Heller of Euless; father and stepmother, Larry and Linda Heller of Ft. Worth; sister, Margie Gayle Heller; brother-in-law, James Chadek; nephew, Jagger Chadek; niece, Layla Chadek all of Azle; grandparents, Murl and Beverly Gamble of Hurst; Bob and Roberta Heller of Glen Rose and Josie McDaniel of Mize Miss.

James Burk
James Grady Burk, 65, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003 in Dallas following a lengthy illness.
Services were held at 2 p.m., July 10, at First Baptist Church of Springtown. Burial was in Springtown Cemetery under the direction of White s Funeral Home in Springtown
Mr. Burk graduated from Texas Tech in 1963. He served in the 49th Armored Division of the National Guard. He retired from the Civil Service as an electrical engineer and from the Springtown ISD. He owned and operated the Prestige Lawn Service until his death.
Mr. Burk was active in the First Baptist Church. He was a former Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 303 in Springtown and was an avid supporter of the Springtown Band from 1980-1996. Over the past 23 years he rarely missed his children s concerts.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Annette Burk; son, Asa Burk and wife, Alicia of Ft. Worth; daughter, Cara Jolly and husband, Darin of Mabank; brother, T.C. Burk of Silver City, New Mexico; grandchildren, his pride and joy, Elizabeth and Aaron Jolly; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary Pack
Mary Gaylon Pack, 59 of Brady, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Rest Haven Cemetery.
Survivors include sons, Delbert L. Pack and Scott Eric Ford, both of Brady and Floyd Denton Pack of Fort Worth; daughters, Rhonda G. Norris of Azle and Debbie D. Pack of Fort Worth; and sister, Joyce Rogers of Brady.
Homer Martin
Homer Martin, 88, of Crowell, died Wednesday, July 9, 2003 in Wichita Falls.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Womack-Manard Funeral Home with A.B. Martin of Red Springs officiating. Burial was in Gilliland, Texas Cemetery.
Mr. Martin was a farmer and custom harvester and retired from the Santa Rosa Telephone Coop Inc.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby of Seymour; sisters, Gladys Meek of Seymour and lla Grace Dowdle of Azle.
William Vaughan
William Grady Vaughan, 83, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003 in Kennedale.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at West Parkway Baptist Church. Burial was in Azleland Cemetery.
Mr. Vaughan was born in Stephenville and was a longtime resident of Fort Worth. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Grady was a retired painter and member of West Parkway Baptist Church in Azle.
Survivors include his daughter, Sandra Bay; son, Larry Vaughan; sisters, Mirl Howell, Earlene Davenport, Lolamay Daugherty; brothers, Gordon Vaughan, Kenneth Vaughan; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Ray Chaney
Ray Chaney, 76, died Sunday, July 20, 2003, at his home.
Services were held at 1 p.m. Friday at White s Azle Chapel.
Mr. Chaney was born Oct. 26, 1926, in Bandera. He retired from TXU in August, 1987, after 35 years of service. Mr. Chaney was preceded in death by his parents, Orb and Myrtle Elizabeth Highsmith Chaney.
Survivors include his wife of 16 years, Nancy Chaney; sons, Charley and Wade Chaney; daughters, Melea Scott, Mikki Worthington, Deborah Claborn; stepchildren, Nina Wyche, Donna Wiseman, Darryl Dingman; sister, Lois Hill; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Christine Simpson
Christine Janice Beaty Simpson, 82 of Granbury, died Wednesday, July 9, 2003, in Fort Worth.
Services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Wiley Funeral Home in Granbury. Burial was at 2 p.m. Sunday, Hickory Grove Cemetery in Paris, Texas.
Mrs. Simpson was born February 14, 1921, in Cleveland, Oklahoma. She was the oldest of five children born to Charles Ralph and Ianthe Ellen Crain Beaty. Her family left Oklahoma and came to Texas in 1936. She graduated from high school in Grandfalls, Texas, and married James Robert Simpson on February 11, 1938, in Fort Stockton, Texas.
She retired from Murray Corporation, Palestine, Texas, in 1978. Mrs. Simpson had lived in Springtown, for the past eight years, coming to Granbury only a year ago. She was a member of the Southside Baptist Church.
Mrs. Simpson saw to it that her children were always in Sunday school and church. During her lifetime, she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir at many of the churches she attended. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who valued her family and her relationship with Jesus Christ. Her many hobbies included quilting, gardening, writing poetry and reading. At the time of her death, she was in the process of writing a book.
She is survived by her daughter Sue Williams and husband, Mike, of Liberty, Texas, daughter Jane Kimbrow and husband, Jim, of Granbury, son Jack Simpson of Granbury, and daughter Shelly Bohannon and husband, Gerald, of Wylie, Texas; brother, Jim Beaty and wife, Glenda, of Huffman, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Carrie, Sue Ellen, Cindy, Christy, Stacia, Dena, Darren, Trey, Christopher and Nathanial; 12 great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; and 10 nieces and nephews.
Clarence Underwood
Clarence Underwood, 40, an independent truck driver from Springtown, died Sunday, July 6, 2003, at an Azle hospital.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Mount Olivet Chapel. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Funeral Home.
Mr. Underwood was born Dec. 19, 1962 in Fort Worth. He loved being involved with his family. He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd E. Underwood, Sr. and brother, Russell H. Underwood.
Survivors include his wife of 15 years, Sandy Underwood of Springtown; daughter, Brandi Underwood of Hurst; step-daughters, Tonya Kim McDowell and husband, Roger of Springtown, Kelly Gene Powers and husband, Mike of Keller; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; mother, Alma Gene Underwood of North Richland Hills; sister, Gene Ann Brown and husband, Charlie of Watauga; brother, Lloyd E. Grady Lee Smith

Lucille Wright
Lucille Wright, 85, died Sunday, July 6, 2003, in River Oaks.
Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Greenwood Chapel with burial in Greenwood Memorial Park.
Mrs. Wright was born Sept. 29, 1917, in DeLeon. She was a member of the Lakeside Church of God. She was sharp as a tack and was loved by everybody. She will be dearly missed by all who loved her.
Mrs. Wright was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Otho Wright in 1984.
Survivors include her daughters, Erma Dayton and Mary Palmer and husband, Charles; son, Calvin Wright and wife, Terry; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and sister, Lutishe Snider.
James G. Burk
James G. Burk of Springtown, 55, died Tuesday, July 8, 2003 at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Springtown. Interment will follow at the Springtown Cemetery under the direction of White s Funeral Home.
Visitation was at White s Funeral Home in Springtown from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.
He is survived by his wife, Rita Annette Burk of Springtown; one son, Asa Burk of Fort Worth, and his wife, Alicia; one daughter, Cara Jolly and her husband Darin of Mabank; and two grandchildren.
Gene Mitchell
Gene Odell Mitchell of Springtown died Friday, July 4, 2003.
Services were held at 10 a.m., July 9, at Laurel Land Memorial Chapel. Pastor Wm. E. Bill Jackson officiated. Burial was in Laurel Land Memorial Park.
Mr. Mitchell was a lifetime resident of the Fort Worth Area, residing in Springtown.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Melody, and five brothers.
Survivors include his wife, Loyce Mitchell; children, Terry, Gary, Larry, Robbin and Chris; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and sister, Betty Medlin.
Roscoe Thames
Roscoe S. Thames, 73, died Saturday, July 5, 2003, in Azle.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at White s Chapel. Burial was at 3 p.m. in Evergreen Cemetery in Ranger.
Mr. Thames was born in Ranger. He retired from Lockheed. Roscoe was a 32nd-degree Mason and longtime member of River Oaks Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dianne, in 1997.
Survivors include his daughters, Brenda Heinsen and husband, Curtis, Linda Humphrey and husband, John; brothers, Alvin Thames, Jimmy Needham, Doug E. Needham and Roger Needham; sister, Dorothy Watson; and four grandchildren.
Clarine Ahrens
Clarine Ruth Ahrens, 73, a homemaker from Alvarado, died suddenly and unexpectedly Thursday, July 3, 2003, at her home.
Services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday at White s Azle Chapel. Burial was in Azleland Cemetery.
Mrs. Ahrens was very domestic. She loved cooking, crocheting, quilting and gardening. She was a part-time greeter at the Mansfield Wal-Mart. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert, in June 1984.
Survivors include her sons, Gary Ahrens of Mansfield, Larry Ahrens of Burleson; daughter, Sherry Eckert of Alvarado; granddaughter, Kairee Eckert of Alvarado; brother, Alvin Robert Gloyna of Plano; sister, Geneva Bernice Manning Florissant of Missouri.
Jane Gursky
Jane G. Gursky, a retired postal employee, died Friday, July 4, 2003, in Kaufman.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday at Laurel Land Memorial Chapel. Burial was in Laurel Land Memorial Park.
Mrs. Gursky Jane was born Jan. 6, 1926, in Dallas. She met and married William Gursky in 1942. They lived in Fort Worth, where they raised five children. They were both employees of the Fort Worth branch of the United States Postal Service and members of Travis Avenue Baptist Church. He preceded her in death in 1990.
Survivors include her children, Carol Murray and husband, Don of Scurry, Bill Gursky and wife, Kathleen of Fort Worth, Joseph Peter Gursky and wife, Linda of Springtown, Alexis Wagner and husband, Joe of Warwick, Rhode Island; Linda Haley and husband, Butch of Crowley; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Maegen Elvington
Maegen Ruth Elvington, 19, beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter and cousin, died Wednesday, July 2, 2003.
Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday in Laurel Land Memorial Park.
Maegen was a student at TCC Northwest, and worked at Ron s Deli in Fort Worth. She was a free spirit who loved to laugh and loved the company of family and friends. Maegen was a gift to all who knew her. She will be greatly missed. She is joined in heaven with her grandfather, Elbert Russell.

Robert Collins
Robert J. Roach Collins, 21, a student, died Monday, June 30, 2003, at a Fort Worth hospital.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Biggers Funeral Chapel. Committal services were private.
A lifelong area resident, Mr. Collins attended White Settlement schools. He graduated from Brewer High School in 2000 and was attending Tarrant County College. He was preceded in death by his sister, Lycia Roach, and his grandfather, Lloyd Collins.
Survivors include his mother, Susan Jane Elrod of Fort Worth; father, Jackie Lynn Roach of Grand Prairie; brother, Jackie Baylor Collins of Fort Worth; stepsister, Jackie Marie Pair of Azle; stepbrother, D.J. Vera Lee Hansen
Vera Lee Hansen, 77, a retired Fort Worth Star-Telegram composing employee, died Saturday, June 28, 2003.
Services were held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Greenwood Chapel. Burial was in Greenwood Memorial Park.
Ms. Hansen was born Dec. 17, 1925, to James Vernon and Minnie Chaney Vines in Fort Worth. She graduated from Gatesville High School in Gatesville. She was employed at Western Union in Odessa, Standard Times in San Angelo and All Church Press in Fort Worth. She retired from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram after 27 years of service. She started a second career with Lockheed Martin in Fort Worth and permanently retired after five years of service in 1991. She moved to Victorville, California in 1995 and served as treasurer of the resident council for Desert Knolls Convalescent Hospital. She was a loving and caring daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She will be missed by all who love her so dearly.
Mrs. Hansen was preceded in death by her parents, James and Minnie Vines; brothers, Vernon, Thomas and Elgin Vines of San Angelo and Troy Vines of Midland; and sister, Evelyn Steward of Odessa.

Shirley Durham
Shirley I. Durham, 74, formerly of Red Oak, Iowa, died Thursday, June 26, 2003, at a hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Red Oak, Iowa. The Rev. George Hooper and the Rev. John Eilers officiated. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery under the direction of Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home in Red Oak, Iowa.
Mrs. Durham was born April 7, 1929, in Strand, Iowa, to Elmer and Beulah Leona Collier Brammer. She lived most of her life in southwest Iowa. She attended country school near Glenwood, Iowa, and later Strand. She married Robert W. Burnison Dec. 4, 1948, in Red Oak, Iowa. They made their home together in Red Oak, Iowa, until Robert s death April 12, 1979.
In 1983, Shirley moved to Azle. In 1986, she married Virgil Durham.
She was a volunteer at the hospital in Azle. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church. Shirley enjoyed spending time with her great-grandchildren, grandchildren and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Richard; son, Ronald W. Burnison Feb. 14, 1993; second husband, Virgil Durham in March 1996; and brother, Dewayne Brammer.

Ray Collins
Ray B. Collins, 74, a longtime resident of Springtown, died Tuesday morning, June 24, 2003, at a Fort Worth hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday in McGuire Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Vivian Cemetery in Vivian, Louisiana.
Mr. Collins served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was retired from Texas Refinery Corporation in Fort Worth.

Donna B. Miller
Donna B. Miller, 48, a homemaker, died Monday, June 30, 2003, at a Dallas hospital.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Burial was in Greenwood Memorial Park.
Mrs. Miller was born Jan. 7, 1955, in Borger, and had lived in Azle since 1994.
Survivors include her husband, Randy Miller of Azle; children, Joshua Michael Miller, Jordan Michelle Miller and Matthew Jason Miller, all of Azle; mother, Ava Brown of Amarillo; three brothers; three sisters; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
