Mr. Eddie Henderson
Mr. Eddie Henderson, 73, passed away April 5, 2003. Viewing will be today from 6-9 p.m. and funeral service will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Greater Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church, 3406 Nagle, Houston. Interment will be in Houston National Cemetery.

Eugene Debbs Holstien
Eugene Debbs Holstien, 81, of Houston, passed away April 8, 2003 in Spring Branch Medical Center in Houston.
Mr. Holstien was born Jan. 10, 1922 in Palmetto, La. He married Mary Irene Loomis on Jan. 13, 1940. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints.
Mr. Holstien retired after over 40 years in the oil industry. He was plant foreman for an oil pipe coating plant, Plastic Applicators, in Houston. He transferred in 1955, to open a plant in New Orleans, then returned to Houston base in 1961. He traveled to several states, as well as, Mexico and Germany, in both coating and inspection of oil field pipes.
Mr. Holstien will be remembered as a quiet, loving man, who enjoyed cooking, traveling and spending time with his family.
Mr. Holstien joined the United States Navy at age 19. He served in World War II and was a Pearl Harbor survivor.
Survivors include sons and daughter-in-law, Tal Holstien of Navasota and Morris and Cyndi Holstien of Bandera; daughters and sons-in-law, Alta and Harvey Jones of Leaky, Donna and Ralph Branch of Houston, Rita Senteno and Art Senteno of Brenham and Deana Galvan of North Carolina; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife on Jan. 22, 1985; his parents; one sister; and nine brothers.
Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. yesterday at Veterans Funeral Services in Houston.
Funeral Services were at 12:30 p.m. today at Houston National Cemetery in Houston.
Pallbearers will be Beau Bryant, Randy Bryant, Brian Cubbage, Cody Cubbage, Jeff Cubbage Jr., Robert Estrada, Art Senteno and Gene Senteno.
Gertrude Goeke Mutscher
Gertrude Goeke Mutscher, 94, of Brenham, died April 9, 2003 in Brenham. Mrs. Mutscher was well known in the Brenham area and her son, Gus F. Mutshcer, was the former county judge in Washington County.
Funeral arrangements are pending as they are being coordinated with immediate family members in Michigan, California and Washington, D.C.

Elvin Rapalo
Elvin Rapalo, 21, of Brenham, died April 7, 2003 in Temple, Texas.
Mr. Rapalo was born Sept. 23, 1981 in Honduras to Lillian Garcia and Emilio Aguilar. He was employed at Cleaners Hangers.
Survivors include his mother, Lillian Garcia of Brenham; brothers, Alex Rapalo and Christian Garcia, both of Brenham; sisters, Celeste Garcia of Brenham, Daniela Lopez of Brenham and Emma Rapalo of Honduras; and aunt, Mirelia Otero of Brenham.
He was preceded in death by his father, Emilio Aguilar.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 12 in Iglesia Bautista Fuente de Vida in Brenham with the Rev. Michael Moreno officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham.
Visitation with the family will be at Memorial Oaks Chapel from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 11.

Robbie D. Sweet
Funeral services for Robbie D. Sweet, 73, of Somerville will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 11 from Strickland Funeral Home Chapel in Somerville with the Rev. Virgil Pecht officiating. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery in Somerville. Calling hours are from 8:30 a.m-9 p.m. today with the family present from 6-8 p.m. today and from 8:30 a.m. until the time of service April 11 at the funeral home.
Mr. Sweet passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2003 in Central Texas Veterans Health Care Systems Hospital in Temple.
He was born in Cleveland on July 27, 1929 and was a graduate of Cleveland High School. He was a veteran of the Korean War having served in the United States Army. He worked as an electrician for Gulf States Utilities until his retirement and was a member of Marion Mays American Legion Post #455 of Somerville. He was also a member of First Lutheran Church in Somerville where he served on the church council for many years.
His parents and one brother precede him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Helen A. (Wolff) Sweet of Somerville; two daughters and one son-in-law, Dana Lee and Billy Young of Hewitt and Dona Lyn Hardwick of Wimberly; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robbie D. Sweet Jr. and Kathy Sweet of Colby, Kan. and Jimme Darren (known as Don) and Cheryl Sweet of Wimberly; one step-daughter, Ora Lee and husband Charles Frisch of Austin; two sisters, Gwendolyn P. McNeely and Grace LaNel Mitchell, both of League City; 10 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren.
Family members have requested that memorials be made to the First Lutheran Church of Somerville.

Katherine Lucas Ross
Katherine Lucas Ross, 75, of Brenham, passed away Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003 at her home. She was born May 15, 1927 in Crockett, Texas to Henry James and O'Leavy (Beard) Lucas. She was baptized and confirmed on May 28, 1961 at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church of Houston. She attended school in Crockett. On May 3, 1947, she was married to Jack W. Ross Jr. in Houston. Katherine was an inspirational person along with being a wife and mother.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack W. Ross Jr. on Jan. 31, 1994; brothers, Clarence Lucas, Roy Lucas and James Lucas; and sister, Mattie Del Tunstall.
Survivors include sons, Jack W. Ross and wife Waldine and Roger Ross and wife Dannette; daughters, Cynthia Scaggs and husband Tom and Gilda Sager; five grandchildren, Don Brenner and wife Beatrice, Erica Ogle and husband Lowell, Jack Ross II, Blake Sager and Brent Sager; two great-grandchildren, Bree Ogle and Abby Ogle; and sisters, Gussie Perkins and Jearldean Holloway.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 1, 2003 at 10 a.m. in St. Peters Episcopal Church with the Rev. Cecilia Smith officiating.

David Clarence Schlipf
David Clarence Schlipf, 67, of Brenham, died peacefully at Gazebo Terrace. He was born in Rocky Ridge, Ohio. Dave worked for New York Central Railroad as a heavy equipment operator for eight years. After receiving a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Tri State College, Angola, Ind. in December 1963, he began a 25-year career with Alcoa (Aluminum Company of America). In February 1989, after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, he retired from Alcoa after serving as a purchasing agent and construction buyer at seven offices or construction sites throughout the U.S. He worked in Pennsylvania, Indiana, Kentucky, Virginia, Texas, California and Louisiana.
Dave coached Little League baseball, and was vice president and president of the Jaycees while in New Kensington, Pa. He was an active Lion's Club member in Rockdale, Texas and Corona, Calif. Dave was active in a local church in each city he called home. At his death, he was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Brenham. As a friend, neighbor and co-worker, Dave was always ready to lend a helping hand and was said to have never met a stranger.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Evelyn Eileen (Redman); a sister, Janet Smith of Sandusky, Ohio; a son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Susan Schlipf of Oklahoma City, Okla.; a daughter, Cheryl Matous of Bryan, Texas; five grandchildren, Shannon Bailey and husband Byron Bailey, Emily Schlipf, Jessica Matous and Owen Schlipf; and one great-grandchild, Austin Bailey.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence David Schlipf on June 9, 1982 and Viola (Schuster) on Nov. 4, 1998; and step-father, Gerald H. Hays on April 18, 2001.
The memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2003 at 3 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 305 West 3rd Street, Brenham, (979) 836-5522.

Lola Jean Eberhardt
Lola Jean Eberhardt, 81, of Burton, passed away Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at Trinity Medical Center.
Born Lola Jean Knittel to Emojene and Arnie Knittel, she married Lawrence Eberhardt Dec. 25, 1939. Together they had one daughter, three sons, a daughter-in-law and four grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters.
She was preceded in death by her husband and one son.
Graveside services will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery in Rehburg at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 1.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28 at Memorial Oaks Chapel.
Honorary pallbearers will be Elfan Hinze, Arthur Kochwelp, Ben Hauerland, Rocky Knittel, Terrance Warmke, Tommy Avis, Edwin Harmel and Herbert Korthauer.

Peter Alexander Gurka
Peter Alexander Gurka, 49, of Chappell Hill, died Tuesday Feb. 25, 2003 in Trinity Medical Center in Brenham.
Mr. Gurka was born July 2, 1953 in Houston to Billie Anton and Irene Konieczny Gurka. He was baptized in St. Francis of Assisi Churh in Houston and was confirmed in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Plantersville. Mr. Gurka was a graduate of Montgomery High School.
He was employed at Valmont. He enjoyed riding horses on trail rides, dancing and being around little children. Mr. Gurka was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his sons, Josh Gurka and fiancé Shannon Cochran of Brenham and Andy Gurka of Brenham; mother, Irene Gurka of Chappell Hill; brothers and sisters-in-law, Billy Joe and Sherry Gurka of Montgomery, Robert Lee and Debbie Gurka of Santa Fe and Jerry Eugene and Victoria Gurka of Chappell Hill; sisters and brothers-in-law, Marjorie Ann and Bennie Bolcerek of Brenham and Diane Marie and Eugene Laskoskie of Chappell Hill; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.
The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 28 in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Chappell Hill with Father Gene Shepard, celebrant. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
A rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 27 in Memorial Oaks Chapel.

Virginia Wolfe
Virginia Wolfe, 78, of Brenham, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at her residence.
Mrs. Wolfe was born Feb. 11, 1925 in Houston to Clifford T. and Pearl L. Walters McAlexander. She was a graduate of Jefferson Davis High School in Houston. In 1952, she was baptized in Garden Oaks Baptist Church.
During World War II, she worked at the Ellington Air Force Base, where she met her husband, Boyd V. Wolfe of Tulsa, Okla. They were married Aug. 9, 1946 in Houston.
Mrs. Wolfe worked at the Veterans Administration in Houston and moved to Brenham in 1953. In Brenham, she worked for Wolfe Real Estate and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Brenham.
Survivors include her son, Wayne A. Wolfe of Houston; daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Rick Bodish of Somerville; and brother and sister-in-law, Cliff and Betty McAlexander of Brenham.
She was preceded in death by her father, Clifford McAlexander; mother, Pearl McAlexander; husband, Boyd Wolfe, on Dec. 30,1992; a brother, Callie McAlexander; and a sister, Doris Ashby.
The family will receive friends and relatives at Memorial Oaks Chapel from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 27.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 28 in Calvary Baptist Church in Brenham with the Rev. Larry Embry officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham.

Robert Temple Effinger Jr.
Robert Temple Effinger Jr., "Bob," a native Texan, was born in San Antonio, Texas Dec. 22, 1912 to Robert Temple Effinger Sr. and Faye Hall. His family transferred to Houston where Bob attended Hamilton Junior High and Reagan High School. He worked nights at the Houston Public Library and excelled as an athlete. He worked his way through South Texas School of Law, Rice University and Texas A&M University.
He worked for the Harris County Navigation District - Port of Houston from 1933-43 - where he was the purchasing agent. In 1943, he was employed as chief accountant for Reed Rollar Bit Co. in the war plant and after World War II stayed on with the company until 1968 when he retired as chief financial officer.
He was associated with the following: president of Texas Insurance Buyers Association, Houston; president and trainer of South Texas Obedience Club, Houston; Lone Star Retriever Club, Houston; member, Alpha Tau Omega fraternity; member of Brenham Tax Board of Equalization; past president of Chappell Hill Historical Society; member of Beef Breeders Association of Texas; member of Chappell Hill United Methodist Church; friend of First Baptist Church of Chappell Hill; treasurer, Chappell Hill Masonic Cemetery Association; and charter member of Chappell Hill Chamber of Commerce.
He was active in all sports including track, tennis, basketball, golf, baseball and boxing. While attending Hamilton Junior High, he set the record for Houston junior high schools in the 100-yard dash (under 11 seconds). His membership on the Reagan High School baseball team became the basis for a lifelong hobby that would later bring him fame in sports circles. He also won three Houston City Championships in bowling and the Houston City Horseshoe Pitching Championship. In the '60s, his interest turned to Golden Retriever dogs. Rocky King Rip of Post Oak became the best known Golden Retriever in the United States.
In the late '60s, he purchased the 300-acre Cedar Creek Ranch in his beloved Chappell Hill. His mother attended Chappell Hill Female College. Bob and his family have sat in the very same pews his mother sat in while attending Chappell Hill United Methodist Church. He served as a deacon for many years and one of the church's stained glass windows is in memory of his mother.
Upon retirement Bob started a registered Hereford cattle operation. He enjoyed the simple things in life, being with his family, friends and small town life. He was happiest on his porch swing with his wife while looking out over the land and cattle.
Bob is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ramona Lantz Effinger; his beloved children, daughters, Temple Smith and husband Clifford and Karen Nodine and husband Rodney; and son, Robert Temple Effinger III and wife Marcia. His precious grandchildren, who fondly knew him as "PaPaw" and "Poppy" are Mark E. Smith, Peter F. Maroney III, Robert Temple Effinger IV, William Lantz Effinger and the only granddaughter, Ramona Britt and husband Tim. He is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Jean Gartner of Houston; brother, Harvey H. Effinger of Katy; and many nieces, nephews and wonderful friends.
Friends may call at Memorial Oaks Chapel where the family will be present for visitation, Friday, Feb. 28 from 6-8 p.m.
A graveside service will be held at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, March 1 at Chappell Hill Masonic Cemetery in Chappell Hill.
A memorial service will be conducted at Chappell Hill United Methodist Church Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Kathy Harrell and the Rev. David Beckworth officiating.

Mrs. Lena Wehmeyer Thane
Mrs. Lena Wehmeyer Thane, 92, of Navasota, Texas died Feb. 26, 2003 in Brenham. She was born Jan. 21, 1911 in Anderson, Texas. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Wehmeyer is preceded in death by her parents, Wilhelm and Wilhelmine Wehmeyer; and husband, Walter Thane.
She is survived by her sons, Walter Thane Jr. and wife Barbara and Bill Thane and wife Vernell; brothers, Will Wehmeyer and wife Malinda, Fritz Wehmeyer and wife Hannah, Henry Wehmeyer and wife Emma and Oscar Wehmeyer; sister-in-law, Mae Wehmeyer; sisters, Amelia Webster and husband Arthur and Elnora Schneider and husband Freddie; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 1, 2003 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Navasota, Texas with the Rev. Donald Kasper officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Navasota, Texas. Visiting hours are today from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Nobles Funeral Chapel, Navasota, Texas, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Rosie Mae Alexander
Rosie Mae Alexander, 62, passed away March 3, 2003. Services will be held Saturday, March 8, 2003 at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Baptist Church where the Rev. Fred D. Jones is the pastor and will also be officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Marion Cunningham
Marion Cunningham, 50, of Burton, passed away Monday, March 3, 2003 at Trinity Medical Center. Services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 8 at Zion Hill Baptist Church in Flat Prairie with the Rev. R.L. Fisher officiating and burial will follow at Carter Cemetery. Visitation will be held today from 6-7:30 p.m. at Taft Harris Funeral Home.
Ms. Cunningham was preceded in death by both her parents, Samuel Sr. and Ruthie Mae Cunningham; and two brothers, Elmo and Frederick Cunningham.
She is survived by her daughter and son, Quinn and Quentin Cunningham; sister, Joyce Houston of Burton; brothers, Samuel Cunningham Jr. of Brenham, Norman Cunningham of Gay Hill, Jimmy Dorsey of Chappell Hill, Collin Brown and Andre Cunningham of Houston; four step-children; 14 step-grandchildren; fiancé, Michael Johnson; and a host of relatives and friends.

Dora Hohlt Engelbrecht
Dora Hohlt Engelbrecht was born Oct. 9, 1911, in Long Point, Texas, the daughter of Theodore and Mary Hohlt. She entered into eternal rest Thursday, March 6, 2003, at Fayette Memorial Hospital in La Grange, Texas. She was 91 years old.
Mrs. Engelbrecht was educated in the Long Point School system. She was united in marriage to Charles Engelbrecht in Zion Lutheran Church in Zionsville Nov. 11, 1938, by the Rev. J.F. Mgebroff. She and Charlie lived on their farm/ranch essentially in the Burton community all of their lives. She was an active member of the St. John's United Church of Christ and served in many functions. Mrs. Engelbrecht resided in Oakland Manor in Giddings since October 2002.
Mrs. Engelbrecht is survived by her husband of 64 years, Charles Engelbrecht; one daughter and son-in-law, Dean and Gloria Niday of Austin; one son and daughter-in-law, Clyde and Lois Engelbrecht of Houston; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and 11 brothers and sisters. May God bless her memory.

Clarence Williams
Clarence Williams, 61, of Brenham, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2003 at North Austin Medical Center in Austin. Homegoing services will be held Saturday, March 8, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Main Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Chris Kallie officiating. Burial will be in the H.I.C. Cemetery . Visitation will be held today from 7:30-9 p.m.
Mr. Williams was preceded in death by his mother, Ethel Williams; father, Clarence Boga; and his sister, Bernice Carr.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Juanita Williams; two daughters; two sons; one step-son; eleven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister; one nephew and a host of other relatives and friends.

Julian J. Twardowski
Julian J. Twardowski, 73, of Houston, passed away Friday, Feb. 28, 2003. Mr. Twardowski was a longtime member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church where he served as usher for 18 years.
He is preceded in death by his grandson, Caleb Wishkoski. He is survived by his daughters, Joyce Remmert and husband Darrel of Houston and Doris Wishkoski and husband Marvin of Magnolia; granddaughters, Krystal Wishkoski and Lauren and Lindsey Remmert; sister, Janie Stegent of Houston; brothers, Theodore and Bennie Twardowski of Brenham; and good friend, Earl Rheinboldt of Houston.
Friends called at Pat H. Foley Funeral Home Sunday, March 2, 2003 from 6-8 p.m. with a Vigil-Rosary held at 7 p.m. in the chapel. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. today at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 3600 Brinkman, with the Rev. Thuy Nguyen, celebrant. The Rite of Committal followed at 1 p.m. at Calvary Cemetery in Brenham, Texas.

Mrs. Alma B. Spoonts Wyatt, 88, of Troy, died Saturday, March 1, 2003 in a Belton nursing home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2003 at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple with the Rev. Rudy Ruewick and the Rev. Howard Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Robert's Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. today at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple.
Mrs. Wyatt was born July 2, 1914 in the Bottoms Community near Troy, Texas. She was the daughter of the late Otis Andrew and Shenra Belle Pyeatt Spoonts. She was raised and attended school in Troy, graduating from Troy High School in 1932. She married Mr. Revis Kenneth Wyatt Jan. 25,1936 and they made their home in Troy. He preceded her in death Aug. 10, 1972. Also preceding her in death were two sisters, Clessie Talarico and Naomi Stevenson; a brother, Byron Otis "Cotton" Spoonts; and a nephew, Andy Coley.
B. had worked several years as a floral designer/salesperson for Temple Floral. She had also worked for Linda M's Dress Shop in Troy. She was a member of the Troy United Methodist Church where she was a member of the church choir and for many years she was the music director. She was also music director for First Baptist Church of Troy. She loved to quilt and was one the founders of the Troy United Methodist Church Quilters. Mostly, she will be remembered for the love and devotion for her family and friends.
She is survived by her daughters, Kay Nan Ledger and husband Billy Joe of Temple, Betty Jan Hester and husband Richard of Troy and Nancy B. Sammons of Troy; her son, Otis David Wyatt and wife Darlene of Chappell Hill, Texas; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Her sister, Dalline Farrell of Temple also survives her.
The family requests that memorials be given to the Troy United Methodist Church stained glass window fund, Box 9, Troy, Texas 76579 or to one's favorite charity.

Maria “Angie” de los Angeles Trejo Treviño, 64, of Brenham died Friday, March 7, 2003.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in Robertson Funeral Home in Alice, Texas.
Mrs. Treviño was born Aug. 8, 1938 in Ramirez, Texas, the daughter of Cesario and Dionicia (Orta) Trejo.
On May 8, 1957, she married Fidel Treviño in Alice, Texas. Mrs. Treviño was a nurse aide and a housewife.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
Survivors include her children and their spouses: Lydia Vasquez of Brenham, Fidel and Charollet Treviño III of Bryan, Anna and Mike Farrer of Brenham, Rosemary and Jim Hall of Cuero, Texas, Albert and Luz Treviño of Burton, Ruth and J.R. Horndt of Ellinger, Texas, and Naomi and Charles Janes of Brenham; 19 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, Naomi, Victoria and Allen.

Herbert Boemer, 89, of Brenham, died Saturday, March 8, 2003 in Bluebonnet Hills Nursing Home.
He was born Aug. 14, 1913 in the Zionsville community to Edward and Lillie (Mueller) Boemer. He was baptized Oct. 26, 1913 in Zion Lutheran Church of Zionsville and confirmed April 1, 1925 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Phillipsburg. Mr. Boemer was educated in the Phillipsburg school. He married Irma Reue Oct. 29, 1936 in St. Matthew Lutheran Church of Sandy Hill. He was a retired machinist for Schluemberger and a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church.
Survivors include daughter, Jeanelle Kelm and husband Gus Kelm Jr. of Sandy Hill; grandson, David Kelm and wife Diane of Brenham; great-grandson, Matthew David Kelm; and sister, LaVerne Parker of Huntsville, Ala.
He was preceded in death by parents; wife, Irma Boemer in 1984; and brother, Arnold Boemer.
Funeral service was held Monday, March 10, 2003 at 10 a.m. in Brenham Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Virgil Pecht officiating. Interment followed in St. Matthew Lutheran Church Cemetery in Sandy Hill.

Robert Preuss Sr.
Robert Preuss Sr., 92, of Brenham, died March 4, 2003 in Trinity Care Center in Brenham.
Mr. Preuss was born Sept. 27, 1910 in Washington County to Willie and Louise Quebe Preuss. He was baptized in 1910 in St. John's Lutheran Church in Prairie Hill by Pastor Apfelbach and was confirmed April 10, 1927 in Zion Lutheran Church in Zionsville by Pastor Karl Mueller. He was educated in Washington County schools.
On Sept. 3, 1933, he was married to Frieda Hermann in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brenham. He was a retired farmer and rancher.
Mr. Preuss was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brenham and the Sons of Hermann Lodge #6.

Lawrence Arthur Schmidt
Lawrence Arthur Schmidt, 83, of Burton, died March 3, 2003, in St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.
Mr. Schmidt was born May 22, 1919 in Burton to Arthur and Elise Stork Schmidt. He was educated at the Greenvine School.
On Oct. 13, 1940, he married Elvera Neutzler in Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Greenvine. Mr. Schmidt was a retired farmer, rancher and carpenter.
He was a lifetime member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Greenvine, the La Bahia Turn Verein, La Bahia Cemetery Association, Burton Sons of Hermann and Burton Fire Department. For more than 30 years, he served on the Washington County Fair swine committee.
Mr. Schmidt enjoyed dancing and hunting and had a lot of pride in his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Elvera Schmidt of Burton; sons and daughters-in-law, Delbert and Peggy Schmidt and Roy and Carol Schmidt, all of Burton; daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Fred Rau of Brenham; grandchildren, Keith and Renee Schmidt of Pflugerville, Kim and John Knode of Burton, Carrie and Courtney Schmidt of Burton, Stacy and Trey Hardy of Cypress and Dane Rau and fiancé Melonie Loewe of Brenham; great-grandchildren, Taylor Renee Knode and Jenna Reese Hardy; sisters-in-law, Emma Neutzler and Erna Mae Neutzler; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Eddie and Velma Penkert and Elmer and Lillie Neutzler; brothers-in-law, Oren Neutzler and Wilbert Neutzler; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sara Reichstein Toubin passed away Saturday, March 8, 2003 in Methodist Diagnostic Hospital in Houston. Burial was in the B'nai Abraham Cemetery in Brenham Sunday, March 9, 2003. Rabbi David Moss of Houston officiated.
Sara Reichstein Toubin was born in Europe June 9, 1920 and at the age of 2 1/2 years came to America with her family and lived in Galveston, Texas. She attended Galveston public schools and after graduation worked in the clerical department at Fort Crockett in Galveston.
Sara Reichstein married Milton Toubin Jan. 15, 1950 and they made their home in Brenham. Her husband of 43 years was associated with the New York Stores.
Mrs. Toubin had resided in Houston for the past eight years.
She was a member of B'nai Abraham Synagogue in Brenham and Congregation Beth Yeshurun in Houston.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Milton Toubin; their son, Barry Toubin; three sisters; and two brothers.
Survivors include many nieces; nephews; great-nieces; and great-nephews, who were very close to her.

Mr. Charles Galloway Thrash Jr.
Memorial services for Mr. Charles Galloway Thrash Jr., "Chuck,"79, of Kerrville, who died Wednesday, March 5, 2003, will be at 3 p.m., Saturday, March 8 at Hunt United Methodist Church, with the Rev. John Green officiating. Burial will be private.
Chuck was born in Beaumont, Texas April 25, 1924. After high school graduation, he attended Texas A&M University where he majored in civil engineering. Upon graduation, Chuck joined the U.S. Army to serve in the European Theater. There, he met his beloved wife, Laura Tutfle Thrash, who was serving as an Army nurse. After WW II ended, Chuck enrolled in the SMU School of Law. After graduating from SMU, the couple and their young family moved to Houston, where Chuck joined the law firm of Baker Botts. Tut and Chuck shared many happy years and acquired treasured friends throughout their life together.
Chuck is survived by a son, Charles G Thrash III of Fairborn, Ohio; three grandchildren, Captain Charles G. Thrash IV and wife, Janet of Harker Heights, Texas; Clinton T. Thrash and wife, Heather of McKinney, Texas; and Laura Howard and husband Lee of Rockville, Md.
Wife, Tut; son, Tom; and daughter, Judy, precede him in death.

Tolbert C. Taite, 71, lost his battle with Alzheimer's Disease March 12, 2003. He was born in Bremond, Texas (Petteway Community) July 17, 1932 to Cannon and Alphie (Keeling) Taite. He graduated from John H. Reagan High School in Houston and served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War in Japan. He was married to Jo Ann Stika-Kelly.
Survivors include his wife, Jo Ann Taite of Brenham; son, Timothy C. Taite and spouse Robin of Sugar Land; daughter, Karen Kay Dahmann and spouse Fred W. Dahmann; grandchildren, Danielle Kay Dahmann and Zachary Fred Dahmann, all of Brenham and Juile Ann Dahmann, who preceded him in death; mother-in-law, Marjorie Shutters of Brenham; many first cousins of Bremond; Roswell Taite of Houston; Mrs. Jimmie Irene Taite of Albuquerque, N.M.; Judge Ralph Taite and wife; and his mother, Mrs. Ann Kelm of Dallas.

Ike Selvester Nowak
Ike Selvester Nowak, 80, of Cypress, died March 13, 2003 at his residence.
Mr. Nowak was born July 30, 1922 in Chappell Hill, Texas to Stanley and Mary Cegielski Nowak. He was baptized Jan. 31,1922 in Chappell Hill and was confirmed in Richmond. Mr. Nowak was educated at Richmond High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a staff sergeant gunman in the 497th Bomber Squadron
On Oct. 3,1953 he married Angeline Kaminski in Chappell Hill.
For 40 years, Mr. Nowak was employed with Cameron Iron Works and was a member of VFW Post 9183 and International Association of Machinists.
Survivors include his wife, Angeline Nowak of Cypress; sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Margaret Nowak of Houston, Harold and Diane Nowak of Austin and Mark and Jacqué Nowak of Austin; daughter and son-in-law, Evelyn and Russell Stein of Brenham; five grandchildren, Sam Nowak, Max Nowak and Jake Nowak, all of Austin and Bridget Stein and Dalton Stein, both of Brenham; brother and sister-in-law, Julius and Georgianna Nowak of Rosenberg; and sister and brother-in-law, Esther and Alex Joswiak of Richmond.

Mrs. Jewel Womack, 79, of Pasadena, died Friday, March 14, 2003. She was born Jan. 30, 1924 in Lissie, Texas. Jewel was a member of First United Methodist Church in Pasadena, she was a member of the Couples Class of First United Methodist Church, was a member of Shell Retirees, the Prime Timers and a 1941 graduate of East Bernard High School.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert Womack.
Survivors are her daughters and sons in-law, Marilyn and Tom Townsend, Chappell Hill, Texas and Nell and Duke Taubert, Pasadena; grandchildren, William H. Coyle IV and wife Suzi, Kris Nicole Martin and husband Phillip and Scott Delbert Coyle and wife Nancy; and nine great-grandchildren.
