Adan Lopez
Adan Lopez, 68, of Eagle Lake, Texas died Wednesday, May 28, 2003 at the Rice Medical Center in Eagle Lake following a sudden illness. A native of Goliad County Texas, he was born at El Charco on Aug. 5, 1934 to Valentin Lopez and Aurora Balboa Lopez. He had been a resident of the Eagle area most of his life, was a former resident of Brenham and led a career as a heavy equipment operator, a commercial truck driver and retired from Eagle Lake Concrete. Lopez served honorably with the US Air Force during and after the Korean War as a specialist in weapons, fire fighting and aircraft rescue. He and Corine Martinez were married in Albuquerque, N.M. on July 14, 1954. He is preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his devoted wife of 48 years, Corine Lopez of Eagle Lake; daughter, Mary Jane Faithauer and husband, Herbert Wayne of Brenham; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Juan E. Pena of San Antonio; sister, Onfalia Pena Riveria and husband, Raymond of San Antonio; brothers, Everado Lopez of Duluth, Minn. and Juan E. Pena Jr. of Palmdale, Calif.; grandchildren, April Fanelle Bilski & husband, Donald of Brenham and Anthony Brent Faithauer of Brenham; great granddaughters, Brittany & Shelby Bilski, both of Brenham; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and loved ones. A Vigil Service will be held 6 p.m., Friday from the Chapel of Dulany Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will follow 2 p.m., Saturday, May 31, 2003, from the Parish of Nativity’s Our Lady of Perpetual Help Sanctuary, Eagle Lake, with the Rev. Eddie Winkler officiating. Mr. Robert Hudgen
Mr. Robert Hudgen, 59, passed away May 26, 2003. Service will be May 31, 2003 at 2:30 p.m. It will take place at the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Burton with the Rev. Leroy Solomon officiating. Mr. Robert Hudgen leaves to mourn his mother, Ms. Savana Hudgen. He also leaves behind three brothers, one sister and one uncle and aunt, along with a host of other friends and family. Taft Harris Funeral Home is in charge of service.

Inez Williams
Inez Williams, 77, passed away May 24, 2003. Service will be Saturday, May 31, 2003 at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Chappell Hill with the Rev. Patrice Johnson officiating. Service will take place at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the Copeland Spring Cemetery. Inez Williams leaves to mourn two daughters, Shirley Phillips of Van Vleck, Texas and Joyce Beasley of Bellville, Texas; one brother; eight grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Alphonse Leonard Kubeczka
Alphonse Leonard Kubeczka, 69, of Brenham, died Tuesday, June 3, 2003 at Gazebo Terrace. He was born Jan. 21, 1934 in Chappell Hill to Willie and Agnes (Bartkowiak) Kubeczka. He attended school in Chappell Hill. Alphonse served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict as a Corporal. Alphonse was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus-Guard Knight 4th Degree, American Legion Post #48 and a former Scout Master. He was employed by the City of Brenham Water Treatment Plant for 27 years as a water supervisor and also worked for Maddox Furniture and Brenham ISD. His first wife Regina Kubeczka died in 1982. On May 12, 1984 he was married to Gloria Schoppe in Frenstat by the Rev. Isodore Rozycki and Msgr. Marion Atomanczyic. Alphonse enjoyed fishing and cooking for the Knights of Columbus and being an usher and Eucharistic Minister at St. Mary's. Alphonse was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Regina Kubeczka; son, Michael; sister, Clara Gurney; brothers-in-law, Louis Guidry and Harry Swierkowski; and daughter-in-law, Dana Kubeczka. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Kubeczka; son, Mark Kubeczka of Brenham; stepsons and their wives, Adrian and Ofelia Tydlacka of Prospect, Ky., Glenn and Betty Tydlacka of Somerville and Frank and Melissa Tydlacka of Huntsville; step-daughter and her husband, Shirley and Bill Rush of Houston; grandchildren, Brian and Paul Kubeczka of Brenham; step-grandchildren, Suzanne, Wade, Ryan, Brittney, Tami, Kristi, Kevin and Thomas Tydlacka; brothers and their wives, Edmund and Florence Kubeczka, Harry and Stephanie Kubeczka, Johnnie and Cindy Kubeczka, Willie and Mary Ann Kubeczka and Raymond and Albina Kubeczka, all of Houston; and sisters and their husbands, Gertrude Swierkowski, Dorothy and Frank Haba, Mary Ann and Mike Guidry, Rita and Michael Burk, all of Houston. Rosary for Alphonse Kubeczka will be recited and led by Deacon Dan Nowak and K.C. members at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2003 in Brenham Memorial Chapel. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 5, 2003 in St. Mary's Catholic Church by Father Richard Tijerina, officiant and other priests. Burial will follow in Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Brian Kubeczka, Paul Kubeczka, Steven Kubeczka, Dennis Kubeczka, Jeff Kubeczka, Harry Kubeczka Jr., Michael K. Kubeczka, Bradley Burke, Frank Haba Jr. and Vincent Gurney. Milton L. Lewis
Funeral services for Milton L. Lewis, 87, of Snook, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 6 from Lone Oak Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Scaggs and the Rev. Jeremy Lewis officiating. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery in Somerville under the auspices of Lee Scott Masonic Lodge in Somerville. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday with the family present from 6-8 p.m. Mr. Lewis passed away Tuesday, June 3 in Trinity Medical Center in Brenham. He was born in Snook Sept. 20, 1915, the son of Tobe and Betty Schoenemann Lewis. He was married to Marie Shelburne Lewis March 15, 1936 in Washington County and was a cattle rancher. He was a member of Lee Scott Masonic Lodge No. 793 A.F. and A.M. in Somerville, and a member of Lone Oak Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Marie Lewis on Jan. 7, 2003. Survivors include his three daughters and two sons-in-law, Betty and William Ray Swabado of Kingwood, Nannette and Gerald Zernial of Brenham and Leatrice Lewis of Austin; one brother and sister-in-law, Hubert and Mary Nell Lewis of Snook; one sister, Marie Wilde of Bismarck, N.D.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Family members have requested that memorials be made to Lone Oak Baptist Church.

Arthur Vane “A.V.” Carroll Jr.
Arthur Vane “A.V.” Carroll Jr., 56, of Burton, died June 5, 2003 in St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan. Mr. Carroll was born Oct. 31, 1946, in Waxahachie, Texas, to Arthur Vane Sr. and Rosa Lea Graham Carroll. He was baptized and confirmed Jan. 15, 1978 in Christ Lutheran Church in Brenham. He was educated at Waxahachie High School and earned a degree in horticulture from Texas A&M University in 1975. Mr. Carroll was a submarine commander in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. On July 1, 1977, he married Kathryn Mertz in Christ Lutheran Church in Brenham. Mr. Carroll was the owner of Fluff Top Roll Restaurant. Mr. Carroll was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Greenvine, Washington County A&M Club, Washington County Go Texan Committee and Brenham BPOE #979. Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Carroll of Burton; sons and daughter-in-law, Clint and Sara Carroll of Austin and Cody Carroll of Burton; daughters and son-in-law, Kristina and Dennis Newton of Plano and Christin Carroll of Port Isabel; his father, A.V. Carroll Sr. of Aubrey; brother, Ronnie Carroll of Brenham; sister and brother-in-law, Shelley and David Stevens of Denton; one grandchild, Kyle Luhn of Brenham; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Nina and Alfred Hermann of Houston and Margie Mertz of Burton; special family members, Melvin Zwernemann of Carmine, James and Pauline Zwernemann of Cedar Creek and Ray and Joann Ullrich of Austin; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Rosa Lea Carroll; and a nephew, Billy Carroll. Mildred Elise Baker
Mildred Elise Baker, 97, passed away Saturday, June 7, 2003 in Houston, Texas. Mildred was born Nov. 6, 1905 in the Gay Hill community of Washington County to Mr. and Mrs. James Whitaker and Mattie Hardy Gee. Mildred received a teaching certificate from Blinn College and taught in Wesley School until she was married to E.L. Baker July 3, 1926. She was a homemaker and a member of the Brenham Presbyterian Church. Mildred was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by her son, Eugene Gee Baker and wife Joyce of Houston; daughter, Vivian Baker Mason and husband Dr. Harold Mason; grandchildren, Daniel and wife Elizabeth Mason, Dr. Lora Mason Kaviani and husband Dr. Kevin Kaviani, Lisa and husband Pedro Pinedo, Amy and husband Jeff Deatsman, Susan and husband John Love, David Eugene Baker and Janet and husband Duncan McCallum; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eugene L. Baker; and two brothers. Friends and family may visit from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2003 in Brenham Memorial Chapel. Miss Helen Jean Bennett
Miss Helen Jean Bennett, 51, departed this life June 5, 2003. Services will be Tuesday, June 10, 2003 at 10 a.m. They will be held at the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Washington, Texas. Miss Bennett leaves to mourn two sons, Roderick Terrell Bennett of Washington, Texas and Patrick Darnell Bennett of Brenham; one daughter, Cindy Annise Moore of Brenham; two sisters, Lillie Mae Robinson of Brenham and Dorothy Jean Smith of Midland; two brothers, Ernest Bennett Jr. of Navasota and James Bennett of Brenham; seven grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Edward Ralph Gondeck
Edward Ralph Gondeck, 79, of Blanco, Texas, passed away June 6, 2003 in Fredericksburg. He was born Feb. 20, 1924 in San Antonio. He was married to Agnes Doris Brown. He was the world's greatest architect. Survivors include his wife, Agnes Gondeck of Blanco; sons, Eddie and wife Linda Pitts Gondeck of Brenham and Wayne and Yvette Gondeck of San Antonio; and four grandchildren, Pamela, Briana, Jacqueline and Taylor Gondeck. Services will be held Tuesday, June 10, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Blanco United Methodist Church in Blanco, Texas. Bro. W.B. Hiller will officiate. Interment will be held in Blanco Cemetery in Blanco, Texas. Clarence William Hohlt
Clarence William Hohlt, 84, passed away Saturday, June 7, 2003 at his residence. Clarence was born Nov. 17, 1918 in the New Wehdem community to Otto W. and Emma Wenzel Hohlt. He was baptized Jan. 1, 1919 by H.C. Poehlmann and confirmed April 9, 1933 by M.C. Hoermann, both in St. James Lutheran Church of New Wehdem. Clarence attended New Wehdem schools and served in the U.S. Army in World War II. On Aug. 25, 1940 he was married to Ella Mae Sander in the New Wehdem church. Clarence enjoyed fishing and playing dominoes. He looked forward to Mondays when he and his buddies drank coffee together. Mr. Hohlt was a retired electrician. Clarence is survived by four children: sons, Harold Gene and wife Shirley Hohlt and Bobby Dale Hohlt; daughters, Betty Joyce and husband Spencer Gaille and Karen Sue and Michael Fritz; 10 grandchildren, Byron Dale Hohlt, Scott Gaille, Brandon Gaille, Patrick Hohlt, Michael Hohlt, Rachel Hohlt, Shawn Gallagher, Kevin Fritz, Matthew Fritz and Kelsie Fritz; and three great-grandchildren, Anneysa Gaille, Morgan Gaille and Kyle William Hohlt. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ella Mae Hohlt; brother, LeRoy Hohlt; sisters, Lillie Mae Gaskamp and Verlin Foerster; and a great-grandchild, Reagan Gaille. The family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m. today in Brenham Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2003 in St. James Lutheran Church of New Wehdem. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pastor Sid Bohls is clergy. His grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers include Melvin Steinkamp and all of his nieces and nephews. Bobbie Ray Kohring
Bobbie Ray Kohring, 62, of Brenham, died June 9, 2003 at his residence after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Kohring was born Sept. 11, 1940, in Navasota, Texas to Robert and Anita Schroeder Kohring. He was baptized Oct. 13, 1940 in Bethlehem Lutheran Church of William Penn by the Rev. C.J. Appel and was confirmed April 11, 1954 in the same church by the Rev. Theo. R. Griesse. Mr. Kohring attended William Penn School and was a 1959 graduate of Brenham High School. He served in the U.S. Army. On Feb. 28, 1965, he was married to Patricia Ann Oberhoff in St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Sandy Hill by the Rev. Leon Knitt. For nearly 40 years, Mr. Kohring was employed by Bluebonnet Electric. He was a district supervisor. Mr. Kohring was a faithful life member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in William Penn, where he served as president and held various other offices. He loved the family farm, fishing and spending time at the deer lease with his hunting buddies. Survivors include his wife, Pat Kohring of Brenham; son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Amanda Kohring of Brenham; daughter, Amy Kohring of Brenham; mother, Anita Kohring of Brenham; grandchildren, Brette Ashlee Kohring, Blake August Kohring and Hannah Beth Emshoff; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerry Lee and Doris Kohring of Brenham, Robert Wayne and Barbara Kohring of Brenham, Valgene and Diana Kohring of Washington and Danny Kohring of Navasota and fiancé Shirley Nichols; sisters and brothers-in-law, Marilyn and Vernon Klussmann of Brenham, Sandra and Bobby Searle of Washington, Kathryn and Joe Martinez of Brenham, Diane and Chuck Boggan of Brenham and Rebecca and Ray Wellmann of Brenham; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Anita and Erich Oberhoff of Brenham; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bobbie and Linda Oberhoff of Washington and Ricky and Tammy Oberhoff of Burton; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Bobbie loved children, especially his precious granddaughters, Hannah, Brette and Blake. They were adored by their "Papa." He was preceded in death by his father; an infant sister, Ruth Kohring; and sister-in-law, Connie Kohring. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 11 in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in William Penn with Pastor Eldor Harmann officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, June 10 in Memorial Oaks Chapel. Pallbearers will be his godsons and nephews: Timothy Klussmann, Michael Kohring, Randall Kohring, Rallin Wellmann, Ethan Boggan, Landon Kohring, Lance Searle, Jody Martinez, Corey Klussmann, Bradley Kohring, T.J. Martinez, Forrest Kohring and Craig Boggan. All employees of Bluebonnet Electric and Brenham Poorboy Hunters will be considered honorary pallbearers. Mr. Kohring will be missed by those who loved him but never forgotten, for he will live in the memories of the time we were given to know and love him.
