Bertha Dotson
Bertha Dotson, age 104, of Brenham and formerly of Caldwell, died Jan. 6, 2003 in Gazebo Terrace Convalescent Center in Brenham.
Mrs. Dotson was born Aug. 5, 1898 in Palestine, Texas to Albert and Martha (Hogg) Hogg. She was baptized in the Christian faith in the Church of Christ in Deanville and was educated at Palestine School.
On Dec. 31, 1916, she was married to Louis Dotson at her mother’s home.
Mrs. Dotson was a homemaker.
She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Lucille Foehner and Dr. William A. Lange Sr. of Burton and Opal Cox of New Orleans, La.; son-in-law, Hixon Cowan of Temple; daughter-in-law, Ethel Dotson of Salado; 10 grandchildren, Sharon Lange, Becky and Roy Rohde, William A. Jr. and Deborah Lange, Dan and Luann Lange, David and Joy Noether, Connor Jr. and Vergie Dotson, Marvin Dotson, Sarah Cowan, Jane and Albert Even and Mr. and Mrs. James Cox; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Edna Nichols of Baytown.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Dotson, in February of 1964; and her parents.
The family will receive visitors at Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell today from 6-8 p.m.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8 in Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell. Burial will be in the Masonic Cemetery in Caldwell.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, great-grandsons and nephews.
Memorials may be given to the Caldwell Church of Christ.

Rev. CeDell Miles
Funeral services for the Rev. CeDell Miles, who died in a local hospital Jan. 2, will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. John AME Church. The Rev. Alvin Larke is pastor. The Rev. Fred Thomas will officiate with burial in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
There will be a wake this evening at the funeral home from 6-7:30.
Survivors include four sons, CeDell Miles Jr. and Alesice of Dime Box, Harold Miles and Joyce of Giddings, Johnny Miles and Doris of Brenham and Ennis Miles of Amarillo; four daughters, Joyce Fillmore and Samuel, Elsie Coleman and Cecil, Jeanette Miles and Hosea and Patricia Kimble and Jessie Jr., all of Brenham; two brothers, Paul Miles and Marty of Kennewick, Wash. and Silas Miles of Killeen, Texas; five sisters, Louiza Richmond, Azerlee Williams, Renola Osband, Annie Snell and Alice Smith; and sister-in-law, Mozell Miles; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Dr. Albert Stone Jr.
Brenham native Dr. Albert Stone Jr. died Jan. 1, 2003 at a hospital near his home in Brookline, Mass. following a lengthy illness. Dr. Stone was born Aug. 18, 1916 in Brenham. He was the son of Senator Albert and Hattie Parks Stone.
Dr. Stone graduated from Brenham High School and received his bachelors and law degrees from the University of Texas. He served in the Judge Advocates General Corp. during World War II and practiced law in Brenham following the war. He then returned to study literature at the University of Houston and earned his doctorate from Harvard University. He was a Phi Beta Kappa.
Dr. Stone was a professor of literature at Hellenic College in Brookline, where he became the head of the English department.
Dr. Stone married Marjorie Cohen of Brookline, Mass. May 17, 1966. Dr. and Mrs. Stone were ardent supporters of the arts in the Boston area and in particular the Brookline Public Library.
Through the generosity of Dr. Stone and his sister, Mary Stone Rankin, and through their desire to preserve the home of future generations, the Giddings-Stone Mansion was donated to the Heritage Society of Washington County.
Dr. Stone is survived by his wife, Marjorie; a step-daughter, Jane Cohen; nephews, Bob and Bill Rankin; and niece, Ruth Rankin Reimann, and their families.
Dr. Stone was placed to rest in Walnut Hill Cemetery in Brookline.
Alvis Lorenz Fuchs
Alvis Lorenz Fuchs, 78, of Brenham, died Jan. 7, 2003 in Gazebo Terrace Convalescent Center in Brenham.
Mr. Fuchs was born Aug. 11, 1924 in Burton, Texas to Lorenz and Matilda Bosse Fuchs. He was a graduate of La Grange High School and served in the U.S. Army from March 15, 1945 to Oct. 18, 1946.
On Sept. 21, 1973, he was married to Helen Arning in Grace Lutheran Church in Brenham.
Mr. Fuchs was a self-employed salesman and was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Brenham.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Fuchs of Brenham; stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Walter Winkelmann of New Braunfels and Judy and Ronnie Haevischer of Brenham; brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Millie Ann Fuchs of Nacogdoches; sister, Maydell Garner of Austin; three grandchildren, Lori Roland and her husband Jerod, Ryan Haevischer and Darren Haevischer; and two great-grandchildren, Trenton Roland and Brett Roland.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Melva Dietrich Fuchs on Nov. 1, 1972; granddaughter, Wendy Winkelmann; great-granddaughter, Kayla Roland; and brother-in-law, Don Garner.
The funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9 in Grace Lutheran Church in Brenham with Pastor Matthew Jacobs and Pastor William Holzer officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham.
The family will receive visitors at Memorial Oaks Chapel from 6-8 p.m. today.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons and nephews.

Milton Ray Roese
Milton Ray Roese, 63, of Brenham, died Jan. 7, 2003 in Trinity Medical Center in Brenham.
Mr. Roese was born April 12, 1939 in the Washington community of Washington County to Roland and Emma Fahrenkamp Roese. He was baptized June 14, 1939 in Friedens United Church of Christ in Washington and was confirmed in April 1953 in the same church.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Sheila and Ricky Ripple of Burton and Sharon and Mike Parker of Washington; brother and sister-in-law, W.W. and Patricia Roese; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Martin Homeyer; sister-in-law, Frances Roese; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Larry Roese and Robert Roese; and sister, Christine Roese.
The graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 9 at Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham with Ron Trimmer officiating.
Service arrangements are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main St., in Brenham.
Merle Arnold Evans
Merle Arnold Evans, 97, of Brenham, died Jan. 8, 2003, in Bluebonnet Hills Care Center in Brenham.
Mrs. Evans was born Oct. 18, 1905 in Houston, to William Paxton and Hortense Irene (Fitze) Arnold. She attended Draughons Business College in Houston. She was a retired secretary and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Brenham.
Survivors include her sister, Louise Arnold Jones of Brenham; daughter-in-law, Marion Hamilton Evans of Houston; grandchildren, Gregory and Haley Evans, John G. Evans, Tamrah Alvarado, Jamie Child, Stephanie Plank and Jennifer Delgado; great-grandchildren, Kailyn Evans, Kourtney Evans, Keegan Evans, Sierra Pervis and Sabastian Alvarado; nephew, Don Jones and wife Suzann of Brenham; and niece, Marilyn Webster and husband Brian of Paso Robles, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Temple Evans; sons, John Michael Evans and Gregory Jones Evans; two brothers; and five sisters.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11 in Calvary Baptist Church in Brenham with the Rev. Larry Embry officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham.
The family will receive visitors at Memorial Oaks Chapel from 6-7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10.
Pallbearers will be Don Jones, Russell Jones, Kyle Hammer, Joe Armstrong, Gregory Evans and John Gerald Evans.

Ila Moses Kettler
Ila Moses Kettler, 82, of Brenham passed away Thursday, Jan. 8, 2003 in Trinity Medical Center. Mrs. Kettler was born April 20, 1920 in Williamson County to Russell and Ada Pearl (Simpson) Moses but lived in Washington County most of her life, graduating from Burton High School. On Dec. 27, 1942 she was married to Milton Adolph Kettler in Somerville Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Birkelbach. She was a member of Brenham Presbyterian Church and had been employed as a practical nurse at Brenham Rest Home.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Milton Kettler on Oct. 3, 1984; brother, Leonard Moses; and three sisters, Frances Hawthorn, Audrey Hawthorn and Ivy Iselt.
She is survived by her two sons and daughter-in-law: James A. Kettler and Kenneth and Nora Kettler, all of Brenham; and two sisters, Joyce Brandstetter of Milano and Josephine Hawthorn of Houston.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2003 at Brenham Memorial Chapel.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003 at Brenham Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Allen Farquhar officiating. Burial will follow at Prairie Lea Cemetery,

Marie Lewis
Funeral services for Marie Lewis, 85, of Snook, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2003 from Lone Oak Baptist Church with the Rev. Floyd Franks officiating. Visitation will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Strickland Funeral Home in Somerville.
Mrs. Lewis was born Jan. 3, 1918 in Somerville, the daughter of Ike Cole Shelburne Sr. and Bertha Ferguson Shelburne. She graduated from Somerville High School and was married to Milton Lewis on March 15, 1936 in Washington County.
She was a member of Somerville Chapter #245 of the Order of the Eastern Star and Lone Oak Baptist Church. She was an avid domino player who joined others every Monday night for 27 years playing Forty-Two.
She passed away Tuesday, Jan. 7 at Bluebonnet Hills Care Center in Brenham.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Electra Louise Shelburne Ridgeway; and one brother, Ike Cole Shelburne Jr.
Survivors include her husband, Milton L. Lewis of Snook; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Betty and William Ray Swabado of Kingwood, Nanette and Gerald Zernial of Brenham and Leatrice Lewis of Austin; one brother, Joys Emett Shelburne of Beaumont; and six grandchildren.
Family members have requested that memorials be made to Lone Oak Baptist Church.

Norris Davis, 90, of Somerville, Texas, passed away Jan. 7, 2003 at St. Joseph Hospital in Bryan, Texas. Services will be Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003 at 2:30 p.m. at Second Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Anthony Watson, pastor, and the Rev. Basil Lister officiating. Burial will be in the Somerville Cemetery.

Oda Shaw
Funeral services for Oda Shaw, age 86, who died at a local nursing facility in Brenham on Jan. 7, will be held Monday, Jan. 13 at 11 a.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church in Burton. The Rev. Irell Fisher will officiate with burial in the Flat Prairie Cemetery.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Lisa Nixon; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Anita Kieke
Anita Kieke, 87, passed away Saturday morning, Jan. 11, 2003 in Trinity Medical Center.
Anita was born in the Kuykendall community of Washington County on Oct. 31, 1915 to Henry and Sophie Wolff Dreyer. She was baptized Feb. 27, 1916 in Immanuel Lutheran Church of Wiedeville and was confirmed there on April 13, 1930. Anita attended Kuykendall schools.
On Aug. 14, 1948 Anita was married to Edwin Kieke in the Wiedeville Church. Mrs. Kieke was a homemaker and was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Wiedeville and active in the Ladies Aid.
Her survivors include: two sons: Jerry Kieke, Larry Kieke and his wife Judy; daughter Mary Lueckemeyer and her husband Daryl; grandchildren Kelee and Chad Payton, Kyle Lueckemeyer and his special friend Aliceson Niemeyer, Chris Herzog and Wendy and Brian Horak; great granddaughter Brianna Horak; brother Lonnie Dreyer, sister Annie Peters, sister-in-law Lydia Dreyer and numerous nieces and nephews.
Anita was preceded In death by her parents, husband Edwin Kieke and her daughter, Janice Kieke.
The family will receive visitors from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003 in Brenham Memorial Chapel.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, 2003 at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Wiedeville. Pastor Virgil Pecht will officiate. Burial will follow in Prairie Lea cemetery.

Elsie L. Emshoff Dannhaus
Elsie L. Emshoff Dannhaus, 92, of Brenham, died Jan. 11, 2003 in Bluebonnet Hills Care Center in Brenham.
Mrs. Dannhaus was born May 6, 1910 in New Wehdem, Texas to John and Henrietta (Kochwelp) Emshoff. She was baptized June 19, 1910 in St. James Lutheran Church in New Wehdem and was confirmed April 5, 1925 in the same church. She attended Pleasant Hill School.
On Nov. 28, 1929, she married John R. Dannhaus in St. James Lutheran Church in New Wehdem.
Mrs. Dannhaus was a cook in the Pleasant Hill School and was a life-long member of St. James Lutheran Church in New Wehdem.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, John W. and Johanna Dannhaus of Brazoria, Elwood and Evyonne Dannhaus of Brenham and Patsy Dannhaus of Brenham; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John R. Dannhaus; her son, Billy R. Dannhaus; three brothers; and one sister.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14 in St. James Lutheran Church in New Wehdem with Pastor Sid Bohls officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive visitors at Memorial Oaks Chapel from 6-8 p.m. today.

Albert Holland
Albert Holland, 88, passed away Jan. 10, 2003 at Trinity Medical Center. Services will be Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Goodwill Baptist Church with the Rev. F.J. Williams, pastor. Burial will be in the Franklin Cemetery.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his cousins, James and Wilma Finley, Marcus Finley, Lela Holland and Kendrick Rogers; and a host of friends.

Dorothy Mayer Longbotham
Dorothy Mayer Longbotham, 71, of Round Top, Texas, died Jan. 10, 2003 in Garland, Texas.
Mrs. Longbotham was born Aug. 12, 1931 in Round Top, Texas to Willie John Fritz and Irene Leona (Muske) Mayer. She was baptized in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Shelby and was confirmed in Fayetteville, Texas. She was a 1950 graduate of Bellville High School, where she was active in softball, basketball and volleyball. After graduating from high school she enjoyed following Houston's professional sports teams.
On Sept. 28, 1968, she married Odis C. Longbotham in Bellville, Texas.
Mrs. Longbotham was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, yard work and cooking. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Shelby and the Shelby Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors include her sons and daughter-in-law, Robert and Faye Dodson of Naples and L. William "Woody" Dodson of Garland; daughter, Karen Dodson of Garland; sisters and brothers-in-law, Verline and Phillip Schulte of Brenham, Beatrice M. Krimm of Brenham and Carolyn and Bill Schutte of New Ulm; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Odis Longbotham; her parents; and her brothers-in-law, Pete Krimm and Wilbert Kunkel.
The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14 in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Shelby with Pastor Jim Lewis officiating. Burial will be in the Shelby Cemetery.
The family will receive visitors at Memorial Oaks Chapel from 6-8 p.m. today.
Her nephews and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Minnie Ollie H. Reno
Minnie Ollie H. Reno, 89, of Carmine, Texas died Jan. 12, 2003 at her residence.
Mrs. Reno was born Nov. 11, 1913 in Huntington, Texas to Joseph Irvin and Martha Alice (Ivy) Donnell.
She married Charles M. Reno Jr. in Huntington and was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Charles M. Reno Jr. of Carmine; sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and Glenda Holland and Robert and Diane Holland, all of Huntington; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Stuart Roman of College Station and Patsy and Lonnie Stanley of Huntington; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Betty Joyce Turner
Betty Joyce Turner, 68, of Houston, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003.
She is preceded in death by her son, Dale Turner; and brother, Ernest Boeker Jr.
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister, she is survived by her loving husband, Wayne Turner; son, Charles Turner and wife Karla of Humble; daughters, Pam Rodgers and husband Terry and Nita Arriola and husband Zack; daughter-in-law, Michelle Turner; granddaughters, Tiffany Arriola, Callie Arriola, Lauren Turner, Courtney Rodgers and Kasi Newell; grandsons, Steven Rodgers and Brent Newell; mother, Edna Boeker of Brenham; sister, JoAnn and husband Staf Stafford of Brenham; and many relatives and friends.

Marie Eckert
Marie Eckert of Mason passed away at her home Thursday, Jan. 16, at the age of 90.
She is survived by three children, the Rev. H. Charles Eckert of Shiner, Dewey W. Eckert of Mason and June Durst of Boerne; as well as four sisters, Jewell Tatsch, Bertha Fay Nobles and Viletha Cooper, all of Mason and Mamie Behrens of Brady. Marie is also survived by five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one step great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 18 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mason. Interment followed in the Bethel Cemetery at Camp Air.
Funeral services were under the direction of Mason Funeral Home.
