Carol Green dies at 55
LAWTON, Okla. - Carol 'Cookie' King Green, 55, died Friday, June 26, 1998, in Indianapolis, Ind.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Bethlehem Baptist Church of Lawton with Dr. C.W. Whitlow and the Rev. Gary E. Bender officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller's Mortuary.
Ms. Green was born March 1, 1943, in Lawton. She was the Douglass High School Homecoming Queen in 1961. She received a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Langston University, and in 1965, began teaching at Sheridan Road Elementary School. After two years, she moved to Niagara Falls, N.Y., where she taught school for two years before returning to Lawton. She resumed teaching for Lawton Public Schools at Cleveland Elementary School, where for 10 years she was the music teacher, before retiring in 1995. While at Cleveland, she instructed the children's dance group that performed at Showcase.
In May 1995, she was elected to the Lawton City Council. She was re-elected in May 1997. She was a member of the National Education Association, Oklahoma Education Association, Parent-Teachers Association, Carnegie Library Town Hall advisory board, Lawton Public Library board, Arts and Humanities Council, Transportation Policy Committee, NAACP, Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. sorority, president of Les Femmes for the past five years, Parks and Recreation Commission, Capital Improvements Program community watchdog group, Ranch Oaks Improvement Foundation, YMCA, Parks Naming Commission, Great Plains Improvement Foundation, Board Review Committee, Museum of Great Plains board, Council Committee on Kiowa-Comanche-Apache Land Use and program director for the Juneteenth Celebration.
She was also a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, where she was music coordinator. She was the acting music director at Union Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Lynn Gilmore of Lawton; a sister, Rosalind Singleton of Jackson, Miss.; a brother, Clarence King of Wichita, Kan.; and three grandchildren.
Barbara Boatman
VERNON, Texas - Barbara Decker Boatman, 58, of Von Ormy, Texas, died Wednesday, July 1, 1998, in a San Antonio, Texas, hospital.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Wilbarger Memorial Park with the Rev. Jack Gilliland, pastor of the Second Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Community Funeral Home.
Mrs. Boatman was born June 18, 1940, in Perryton, Texas. She was a former resident of Vernon, where she was a member of the Second Baptist Church. She moved from Vernon in 1978 to the San Antonio area. She was a nurse.
Survivors include a son, Billy Walker of Electra; a daughter, Babbette Price of Lubbock, Texas; and four grandchildren.
Gertrude Berkenbile
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Getrude Marie Henderson Bekenbile, 69, of Little Rock died Tuesday, June 30, 1998.
Services were at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Ruebel Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kurt Boggan officiating. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. today at the O.V. Beck Cemetery Lands in Nocona, Texas.
Mrs. Berkenbile was born in Breckenridge, Texas. She and Thomas Paul Paine were married in 1946. He died in 1964. She and her family moved to Nocona, Texas, where she graduated from high school. She moved to Sherman, Texas, Wichita Falls and Carmi, Ill. She then moved to Stillwater, Okla., where she and William Berkenbile were married in 1968. He died in 1993. She moved to Little Rock in 1993. She lived at the Good Shepherd Ecumenical Retirement Center, where she was a member of the Joy Luck Singers, played in the band, and was chairman of her floor. She was also a member of Highland Valley United Methodist Church in Little Rock.
Survivors include a son, Dennis Paine of Dallas; a daughter, Lisa Wooten of Little Rock; two stepsons, Sarge Berkenbile of Broken Bow, Okla., and Joseph Berkenbile of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister, LaRuth Stuart of George West, Texas; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Joseph C. Stephens, Jr.
CHILLICOTHE, Texas - Joseph C. Stephens Jr., 55, died Thursday, July 2, 1998, in a Burleson, Texas, nursing home.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in the Chillicothe Cemetery with the Rev. Randy Thomas of First United Methodist Church of Chillicothe officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Manard Funeral Home.
Mr. Stephens was born Oct. 25, 1942. He was a former resident of Chillicothe and was a Methodist.
Survivors include a sister, Sara Pursley of Fort Worth; two nephews; and one niece.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time today at the funeral home.
Melissa Liane Zatinsky
PADUCAH, Texas - Melissa Liane Zatinsky, 20, of Tularosa, N.M., died Tuesday, June 30, 1998, near Price, Utah.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at the First Baptist Church in Paducah with the Rev. Keith Prather, pastor of Missionary Baptist Church of Paducah, officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Paducah under the direction of Seigler Funeral Home.
Miss Zatinsky was born Sept. 5, 1977, in Huntington Beach, Calif. She was a 1996 graduate of Alamogordo, N.M., High School. She was attending college in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was a member of Christ Community Church in Tularosa.
Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Patricia and Jim Patterson of Tularosa; and her grandfather, C.F. Parnell of Paducah.

'Duke' Veitenheimer
ARCHER CITY, Texas - Justin "Duke" Veitenheimer, 19, of Megargel, Texas, died Tuesday, June 30, 1998, in an Olney, Texas, hospital.
Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Aulds Funeral Home.
Mr. Veitenheimer was born Sept. 2, 1978, in Wichita Falls. He lived in Joy, Texas, until moving to Megargel in 1997. He was a 1997 graduate from Windthorst High School, where he was a member of the State Championship Football Team. He was named to the Red River 22 All-District team in football and was a member of the Times Record News' Red River 22 team. He was involved with the family business.
Survivors include his parents, Robert A. of Joy, and Judy and Steve Nielsen of Wichita Falls; two brothers, Rocky J. of Windthorst and J.W. Freeman of Wichita Falls; two sisters, Dusty Lynn of Joy and Crystal Gregory of Lubbock, Texas; his grandparents, Ed and Alvina of Windthorst, Aleene and Marion Carlton of Henrietta, Texas, and Dot and Vernon Chatman of Hendersonville, Tenn.
Agnes Fojtik Tomanek
SEYMOUR, Texas - Agnes Fojtik Tomanek, 74, of Seymour died Wednesday, July 1, 1998, at a Wichita Falls hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at the Seymour Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with A.B. Martin officiating. Burial will be in S.P.J.S.T. Cemetery.
Mrs. Tomanek was born May 24, 1924, in Red Springs, Texas. She and Jim Tomanek were married Dec. 27, 1947, in Seymour. She was a lifelong resident of Baylor County. She was a homemaker and a farmer. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Helen Tomanek of Wichita Falls; a son, Jim Tomanek, Jr. of Fort Worth; and a brother, John Fojtik of Joshua, Texas.
Chalmer 'Bob' Toner
HENRIETTA, Texas - Chalmer E. "Bob" Toner, 80, died Wednesday, July 1, 1998, in his Henrietta home.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today in Restland Cemetery in Olney, Texas, with the Rev. Mary Rariden, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Alvord, Texas, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Home.
Mr. Toner was born June 27, 1918, in Farransville, Pa. He and Earline Brown were married Oct. 6, 1943. He was a World War II veteran and retired from TU Electric after 32 years. He was a Methodist.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Kandy Shelton of Alvord; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Eula Cruse
BOWIE, Texas - Eula Cruse, 97, of Bowie died Wednesday, July 1, 1998, in Bowie.
Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Davidson, Okla., Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Keith, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Bowie, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Burgess-Fry-Owens-Brumley Funeral Home.
Mrs. Cruse was born July 17, 1900, in Honey Grove, Texas. She and Julian Cruse were married Nov. 23, 1923, in Ladonia, Texas. He died in 1982. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Davidson. She had lived in Honey Grove and later moved to Tillman County, Okla., in 1923, and lived there until moving to Bowie in 1989. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Fran Whaley of Bowie; three grandsons; and seven great-grandchildren.

BURKBURNETT - Alice Turner, 89, died Wednesday, July 1, 1998, at her residence.

Ms. Turner was born Aug. 4, 1908, in Reno, Texas. She was a homemaker and a member of the Assembly of God.
Survivors include two sons, Carl 'Sonny' of Lane, Okla., and Dwayne of Irving, Texas; four daughters, Faye Fox and Polly Hudson, both of Burkburnett, Norma Turnbow of Conroe, Texas, and Carol Moffett of Wichita Falls; two brothers, Jack Cruce of Lake Worth, Texas, and Joe Cruce of Fort Worth; two sisters, Hattie Green of Temple, Okla., and Byrle Holbert of Fort Worth; 17 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
Joyce L. Finn
Joyce L. Gibson Finn, 59, of Wichita Falls died Wednesday, July 1, 1998, at her residence.
Services will be at 3 p.m. today at the Hampton Vaughan Crestview Chapel with the Rev. Aidan Donlon, chaplain of United Regional Health Care Center, 11th Street Campus, officiating. Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Park.
Mrs. Finn was born Aug. 8, 1938, in Franklin, Texas. She and William Finn were married July 29, 1961, in Houston. She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary VFW Post No. 2147.
Survivors include her husband; four sons, William T., Richard, John and Daniel, all of Wichita Falls; a brother, Donnie Gibson of Henrietta, Texas; a sister, Janell Behn of Lake Jackson, Texas; and four grandchildren.

Edgar Ray Jones
COMANCHE, Okla. - Edgar Ray Jones, 63, of Duncan, Okla., died Tuesday, June 30, 1998, in Duncan.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church of Loco, Okla., with Ben Scott officiating. Burial will be in Dixie Cemetery under the direction of Morehead-Goetz Funeral Home.
Mr. Jones was born Aug. 12, 1934, in Faxon, Okla. He and Maria Rocha were married May 20, 1994, in Duncan. He worked for the Sun Oil Company for 16 years. He then became a self-employed oil field worker. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Eddie of Loco; a stepson, Miguel Rocha of Duncan; two daughters, Toni Jones and Judy Craft, both of Velma, Okla.; two sisters, Billie Dalton of Arizona and Ann Estes of Lone Grove, Okla.; and 11 grandchildren.

Flossie May West
FREDERICK, Okla. - Flossie May Williams West, 93, of Frederick died Monday, June 29, 1998, in McPherson, Kan.
Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Thursday at Burkhardt Chapel of Frederick Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Les Banks, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Gish Funeral Home.
Mrs. West was born March 8, 1905, in Bowie, Texas. She and Kirby Lee West were married Nov. 7, 1925, in Frederick.
Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie McIntyre of Enid, Okla., and Louise Presnell of McPherson; two sons, Arlie of Gage, Okla., and Charlie of Spearman, Texas; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Kathy Elaine Bussey
GRAHAM, Texas - Kathy Elaine Bussey, 44, of Houston died Tuesday, June 30, 1998, in Houston.

Ms. Bussey was born Nov. 11, 1953, in Hanau, Germany. She had lived in Fort Worth before moving to Houston in 1969. She was a member of the Second Baptist Church of Houston.
Survivors include a sister, Donna Lenz of Springfield, Mo.; two brothers, Charles and Mike Bussey, both of Houston.
Omah Glenn Gaddis
HENRIETTA, Texas - Omah Glenn Gaddis, 85, died Wednesday, July 1, 1998, at a Henrietta hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Davis Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Valerie Mireb, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Henrietta, officiating. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery in Henrietta.
Mrs. Gaddis was born Aug. 25, 1912, in Wise County, Texas. She retired from the city of Henrietta as the city secretary after serving 30 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Henrietta. Her husband, Bud Gaddis, died Aug. 26, 1986.
Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Appleby of Henrietta; one stepson; two stepdaughters; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Vetta Hensley Smith
JACKSBORO, Texas - Vetta Oleta Hensley Smith, 73, of Jacksboro died Thursday, July 2, 1998, in Fort Worth.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Coker Funeral Home Chapel with Joe Williams officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Joplin, Texas.
Mrs. Smith was born Jan. 23, 1925, in Joplin. She and Ellis L. Jack Smith were married March 27, 1936, in Fort Worth. She was a clerk at City Drug Store and a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
Survivors include a daughter, Kay Norris of Lovettsville, Va.; a son, Jimmy of Jacksboro; her mother, Julia Hensley; a brother, Bill Hensley of Jacksboro; two sisters, Daisy Polk of Whitharrel, Texas, and Grace Bleeker of Santo, Texas; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Louis E. Blankenship
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Louis E. Blankenship, 76, died Tuesday, June 30, 1998.
Graveside services with full military honors were held Thursday in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in Fort Sam Houston, Texas, with John Hudson officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Porter Loring Mortuary North.
Mr. Blankenship was born March 30, 1922, in Goree, Texas. He had served in the Army.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline; two sons, Jack of Austin, Texas, and John of Killeen, Texas; six sisters, Margie Allen of Goree, Melba Feemster of Hearst, Texas, Shirley Lambeth of Munday, Texas, Jean Adkins of Celina, Texas, Pat Davis of Haskell, Texas, and Judy Wallner of The Colony, Texas; a brother, Joe of Harker Heights, Texas; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Irene Yost Vaughn
VERNON, Texas - Irene Yost Vaughn, 88, died Friday, July 3, 1998, at a Perryton, Texas, hospital.
Graveside services will be at noon Monday in Eastview Cemetery in Vernon with Sammy Vaughn, a grandson, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Sullivan Funeral Home.
Mrs. Vaughn was born June 28, 1910, in Ladonia, Texas. She was a longtime resident of Vernon, where she was a former employee at Heard and Jones Drug Store. She moved to Booker, Texas, in 1984. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Booker.
Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Jean Puckett of Vernon; three sons, Clois of Booker, and Charles and Chester, both of Lubbock, Texas; three sisters, Lena Jobe, Bell Williams and Geneva Bridwell, all of Vernon.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.

Charlotte Kay Flowers
VERNON, Texas - Charlotte Kay Flowers, 46, died Thursday, July 2, 1998, at an Oklahoma City hospital.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the Crowell Cemetery in Crowell, Texas, with Sam Tullock officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Sullivan Funeral Home.
Mrs. Flowers was born April 24, 1942, in Vernon. She was a longtime resident of Lawton, Okla., and was a graduate of Lawton High School. She was a Baptist.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Kay Hill of Oklahoma City; her father and stepmother, Charlie and Kathryn Flowers of Kingston, Okla.; a brother, Ronney Flowers of Lawton; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
