BOWIE, Texas -- Jack Phillips, 82, died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, in a local hospital.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Burgess-Fry-Owens-Brumley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Loyd Morris, pastor of Sunset Church of Christ Church in Sunset, Texas, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Bowie.
Mr. Phillips was born Oct. 10, 1916, in Lometa, Texas. He and Rachel Woods were married Dec. 31, 1954, in Johnson City, Texas. He was a retired heavy equipment operator and rancher. He was a resident of Jacksboro, Texas, for 15 years before moving to Bowie four years ago. He was a member of the Reddy-McClellan Veterans of Foreign Wars post No. 8789 and the American Legion Speak-Meyer post No. 252 in Bowie.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Joyce Benson of Bedford, Texas; two brothers, Berlin of Waxahachie, Texas, and Tommy of Fort Worth; three sisters, Grace Dunson of Fort Worth, Joy B. of Waxahachie, and Tatty Wilkerson of Red Oak, Texas; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Malcom Leroy Robinson
ELECTRA, Texas – Malcom Leroy Robinson, 81, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998 In Oklahoma City.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Electra Memorial Park with the Rev. Tom Medley, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Dutton Funeral Home. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First Christian Church, Oklahoma City.
Mr. Robinson was born July 27, 1917, in Oklahoma City. He and Mary Jane Cole were married Aug. 6, 1950, in Electra. He served in the Marines. He had lived in Oklahoma City for 32 years coming from Fort Worth. He was a past member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and the Oklahoma City Geological Society. He was employed by Broken Hill Properties as a geologist, retiring in 1986.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mara Marie Brachman of Houston; a son, Michael Cole of Beaverton, Ore.; four sisters, Jane Tonsend of Bakersfield, Calif., Tommy Kiser of Modesto, Calif., Gloria Emmert of Mariposa, Calif., and Patsy Steinbrook of Moragan Hill, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Raymon Houston Saffel
RULE, Texas -- Raymon Houston Saffel, 92, of Rule died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Rule Cemetery with the Rev. Scott Henley of First Baptist Church officiating.
Mr. Saffel was born June 25, 1906, in Merkel, Texas. He and Etha Wice Nabons were married Jan. 12, 1929, in Rule. She died in 1986. He was a lifelong farmer in Haskell County. He was an avid sportsman and played baseball with Sammy Ball. A son, Robert, died in 1931.
Survivors include two sons, Jerry F. of Rule, and Gerald C. of Midway, Texas; a sister, Katie Mae Ward of The Woodlands, Texas; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Arthur E. Beaves
WAURIKA, Okla. – Arthur E. Beaves, 94, of Jefferson County died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, in a Jefferson County hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today in First Baptist Church in Terral with the Rev. Walter Haynie and the Rev. Kevin Everett, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Hastings Oklahoma Cemetery under the direction of Willis C. Worley & Sons Funeral Home.
Mr. Beaves was born Nov. 24, 1904, in Waurika. He and Beulah Proctor were married Jan. 10, 1926, in Hastings. She died Feb. 13, 1994. The couple farmed in Hastings until 1938 when they purchased their farm 21/ 2 miles East of Terral, Okla. He worked as a rural mail carrier for the Star Route from 1942 to 1947. He attended Keeter and Belcher Hill Country Schools and graduated valedictorian of the senior class at Hastings in 1922. He was a life long farmer and a member of the Terral Baptist Church.
Survivors include a brother, Elsworth “Buster” Beaves of Oklahoma City; a sister, Odessa McClarty of Hastings; and two step-sisters, Gertrude Barber of Duncan, Okla., and Aleene Griffin of Temple.
Rene’e Hayes
PADUCAH, Texas -- Rene’e Hayes, 51, of Paducah, Texas, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, in a local hospital.
Services will be at 4 p.m. today at Missionary Baptist Church in Paducah with the Rev. Keith Prather, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Paducah under the direction of Seigler Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hayes was born March 3, 1947, in Paducah. She graduated from Paducah High School and attended Clarendon Junior Colloge. She was an artist and was a member of the Pythian sisters. She was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Alyssa Nicole Baker of Medina, Texas; her mother, Mable Holcomb of Paducah; two brothers, Marvin Holcomb of Fort Worth, Texas, and Mikie Dean Holcomb of Paducah; and a grandson.
George C. ‘Trey’ Birdwell III
GRAHAM, Texas – George C. “Trey” Birdwell III, 19, of Graham died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998.
Services will be at 3 p.m. today at First Baptist Church in Graham with the Rev. Joe Howard Williamson, pastor of Horsemen for Christ in Archer City, Texas, and the Rev. Wayne Hardin, pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Graham, officiating. Burial will be in Pioneer Cemetery in Graham.
Mr. Birdwell was born May 9, 1979, in Olney, Texas. He graduated from Graham High School in 1998 and was employed by Ridgecrest Mobile Home Factory in Graham. He was a lifetime resident of Graham and a Baptist. He was engaged to be married to Monica Bogle of Graham.
Survivors include his parents, George Jr. and Caren Gray Birdwell of Graham; a brother, Blake of Graham; and his grandparents, Junior and Carolyn Gray, George C. and Wanda, all of Graham.
James Lewis Roberts Sr.
BOWIE, Texas – James Lewis Roberts Sr., 63, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, in a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Free Will Baptist Church in Bowie with Dr. Larry Cox, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery under the direction of Burgess-Fry-Owens-Brumley Funeral Home.
Mr. Roberts was born July 18, 1935, in McComb, Mo. He and Mary Norman were married July 18, 1961, in Bowie. He was a resident of Bowie for most of his life. He worked for the city and was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Mary Ann Bowman, Rose Marie and Susie Kay, all of Bowie; a son, James Jr. of Surgionville, Tenn.; a brother, Bob Ferguson of Mt. View, Mo.; a sister, Florence Morris of Ark.; and five grandchildren.

VERNON, Texas – James A. Webb, 55, of Vernon, died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, in a local hospital.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Eastview Cemetery with the Rev. Jack Gilliland, pastor of Second Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Community Funeral Home.
Mr. Webb was born Sept. 13, 1943, in Vernon. He and Laura Wilhelm were married May 28, 1974, in Vernon. He was a union carpenter and worked in the produce department at United Supermarket. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Jay Carroll of Ada, Okla.; a brother, E.J. of Alvarado, Texas; a sister, Frances Blaylock of Dean, Texas; and a granddaughter.
Burl L. Johnson
FORT WORTH, Texas – Burl L. Johnson, 76, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today in Weinert Cemetery in Haskell County. Arrangements are under the direction of Biggers Funeral Home.
Mr. Johnson was born April 17, 1922, in Munday, Texas. He retired from the Army in 1973 at the rank of sergeant first class E-7. He served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He worked for the postal service as a postal clerk for 11 years. He had been a resident of Tarrant County since 1950.
Survivors include his wife, Ima Robertson Johnson; a daughter, Norma Lee McCormick; two brothers, Ellis A. of Belton, Texas, and Doyle Dean of Pasadena, Texas; two sisters, Sybil Beauchamp Chandler of Crowell, Texas, and Betty J. Chandler of San Tee, Calif.; and a granddaughter.

Mrs. Weddle was born Oct. 29, 1952, in Pecos, Texas. She and Richard Weddle were married Dec. 30, 1970. She was a resident of Electra for 31 years coming from Las Vegas. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Taylor R. Forester of Electra; three brothers, John E. Taylor and Donnie R. Taylor, both of Electra, and Ronnie J. Taylor of Oklahoma City; and a granddaughter.

Rocky Lyle Tate
BOWIE, Texas – Rocky Lyle Tate, 43, died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, in his Bowie residence.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Eastside Baptist Church with the Rev. Jamie Reed, pastor of the Eastside Baptist Church, and the Rev. Rodney Tate of Assembly of God Church in Burkburnett officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery under the direction of Burgess-Fry-Owens-Brumley Funeral Home.
Mr. Tate was born Jan. 26, 1955, in Fort Worth. He was a resident of Grapevine, Texas, before moving to Bowie 21 years ago. He was a carpenter and a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Grapevine.
Survivors include a son, Shada Paul of Lake Charles, La.; his parents, Buddy and Virginia of Bowie; two brothers, Dallas of Bowie and Ozzie of Gainesville, Texas; and a sister, Josie of Bowie.
