Loreta Mae George
SEYMOUR, Texas – Loreta Mae George, 83, died Thursday, July 23, 1998, in Seymour.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Brad Enloe, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic Cemetery in Seymour under the direction of Archer Funeral Home.
Mrs. George was born Oct. 6, 1914, in DeLeon, Texas. She and Kenneth George were married Dec. 3, 1943, in Arlington, Texas. He died in 1982. She moved to Seymour in 1941. She was a graduate of Texas Weslyan University. She was an elementary school teacher for more than 35 years. She was a member of the Methodist Church, the retired teachers association, the Seymour Hospital ‘Pink Ladies,’ and the Pierian Club.
Survivors include a son, Ken of Dallas; a daughter, Beth Ferrier of Seymour; a sister, Blanche Taft of Angleton, Texas; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Maudie Lometa King
GRAHAM, Texas – Maudie Lometa King, 76, of Graham died Thursday, July 23, 1998, at a local care center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Morrison Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Edwards of Graham officiating. Burial will be in Pioneer Cemetery in Graham.
Mrs. King was born Jan. 10, 1922, in Bunger, Texas. She and Homer Lewis King were married Aug. 24, 1942, in Jack County, Texas. He died March 5, 1976. She was a longtime resident of Graham. She was a homemaker and a member of Oak Street Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Johnny and Rick, both of Graham; four sisters, Lorene Ainsworth of Bryson, Texas, Ona Faye Brown, Pauline Gilmore and Mildred Gilmore, all of Graham; three brothers, Ralph Hinson of Graham, Frank Hinson of Olney, Texas, and Leonard Hinson of Odessa, Texas; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Henry Jesse Fletcher
GRAHAM, Texas – Henry Jesse Fletcher, 80, of Graham died Thursday, July 23, 1998, at a Graham hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Eastside Church of Christ with Ray Crook of Mineral Wells officiating. Burial will be in Pioneer Cemetery under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.
Mr. Fletcher was born May 31, 1918, in Santa Anna, Texas. He and Frances Merle Thigpen were married Nov. 6, 1938, in Santa Anna. He was a veteran of the Army, serving during World War II. He won the Bronze Star for bravery for his service during the Battle of the Bulge. He moved to Graham in November 1946, where he worked for Safeway Grocery Store before becoming co-operator of Johns and Fletcher Grocery Store for many years. After retiring from the grocery business, he became a real estate broker with Lake Country Real Estate and later Weatherbee Real Estate. He was a trustee of Central Texas Area Museum in Salado, Texas. He was a former member of Kiwanis Club, American Legion, a past president of North Texas Retail Grocers Association and a member of Eastside Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon and elder for many years. He taught adult Bible classes for many years.
Survivors include his wife; a son, William Adrin; and two grandsons.

Gladys Gordon
Gladys Green Gordon, 83, of Garland, Texas, died Thursday, July 23, 1998, in Garland.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Crestview Memorial Park with the Rev. Gene Browder, pastor of Grant Street United Methodist Church, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Hampton Vaughan Crestview Chapel.
Mrs. Gordon was born March 30, 1915, in Gladewater, Texas. She and Truman Gordon were married Sept. 10, 1941, in Winnsboro, Texas. He died in 1971. She taught for 25 years in the Wichita Falls Independent School District. She was a member of the Retired Teacher’s Association for 25 years, the American Business Women’s Association, T.O.P.S., and a lifetime member of the PTA. She was a Grant Street Methodist Senior Citizen leader and a Junior Red Cross leader for 10 years. She lived in Wichita Falls for 45 years and moved to a retirement center in Garland in 1992.
Survivors include two daughters, Suzanna Ketcham of New Orleans and Myra Gordon of Dallas; and two grandchildren.
The family will be at the funeral home today from 5-7 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Midwestern State University Fantasy of Lights.

Helen Lewis Hopkins
Helen Lewis Hopkins, 90, of Wichita Falls, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, in Wichita Falls.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hampton Vaughan Downtown Chapel with the Rev. Billy Delaney officiating. Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Park.
Mrs. Hopkins was born May 17, 1908, in Courtney, Texas. She was a member of the LaFleur Garden Club, the Federated Club and the Progressive Club. She taught in public schools for 13 years. She was later a housekeeper. She was a member of St. John Baptist Church of Wichita Falls.
Visitation will be Monday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Gussie L. Carter
Gussie L. Carter, 87, died Tuesday, July 21, 1998, at her Wichita Falls residence.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Young and Company Funeral Home, 822 Roosevelt.
Mrs. Carter was born June 6, 1911, in Lamar County, Texas. She and Finas Carter were married Jan. 23, 1932, in Lamar County. She was a retired nurse’s aide. She had lived in Wichita Falls for 10 years. She was a Baptist.
Survivors include a stepdaughter, Reatha Hall of Dallas; two stepsons, Freddy Hughes of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Billy Carter of Wichita Falls; and three grandchildren.
The family will be at the funeral home Monday from 5-7 p.m.

Jefferson ‘Tres’ Hood III
Jefferson Frank ‘Tres’ Hood, III, 31, of Wichita Falls, died Thursday, July 23, 1998, at a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church of Wichita Falls with the Rev. Robert Allen, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Hampton Vaughan Downtown.
Mr. Hood was born Dec. 30, 1966, in Wichita Falls. He was active in Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity where he served as president of his pledge class. He was a reporter, photographer, producer and anchor for the MSU TV 17 News. He was involved in the Wichitan and the Media Club at Midwestern State University. He graduated from Midwestern State University in August 1991 with a bachelor of arts degree in mass communications. He was the assistant sports director and weekend sports anchor at KFDX TV from 1987 until 1993. He was a sports director at KLST TV, San Angelo, Texas, from 1993 to 1995. He was the Sports Talk Show host at KLLF-AM Radio, Wichita Falls, from 1991 until 1992. He joined KAUZ TV in 1995 where he was an anchor and an executive producer. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Wichita Falls.
Survivors include his father, Frank Hood of Arlington, Texas; his mother, Gayle Johnson of Wichita Falls; his grandparents, Mrs. B.L. Walker of Wichita Falls, Mrs. Josephine Riley of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Hood Sr. of Fort Worth; his stepfather, Bob Johnson of Wichita Falls; and his stepmother, Donna Hood of Arlington.
The family will be at the funeral home tonight from 7-9 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Tres Hood Memorial Journalism Scholarship at Midwestern State University, Development Office, 3410 Taft Blvd., Wichita Falls, Texas 76308.

Lillian Hassler
Lillian Upchurch Hassler, 92, of Wichita Falls, died Friday, July 24, 1998, at a local retirement center.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Fain Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Paul Cunningham, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Park under the direction of Lunn’s Colonial Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hassler was born Nov. 12, 1905, in Fairburn, Ga. She and Earl Hassler were married Dec. 25, 1927, in Atlanta, Ga. He died in August 1979. She moved to Wichita Falls in 1975. She attended Draughon’s Business School following high school graduation and played basketball. She lived in Atlanta, Little Rock, Ark., and Memphis, Tenn., before retiring in 1959. As retirees, they lived in Atlanta, Tampa, Fla., and spent a year in India as advisers for the United Nations on Cotton Seed Oil Production. She had lived in Presbyterian Manor since 1981. She had been an active bridge player for many years, attaining “Life Master” status in Duplicate Bridge with the American Contract Bridge League. She was a member of the Wichita General Hospital Auxiliary. A daughter, Barbara Deupree, died in 1993.
Survivors include a daughter, Nan Johnson of Wichita Falls; a sister, Helen Davis of Atlanta; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Fain Presbyterian Church, Hospice of Wichita Falls, or Interfaith Ministries.

Francis C. Haddox
Francis C. Haddox, 71, died July 25, 1998, in a local hospital.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Crestview Memorial Park with the Rev. Charles Nichols, of Southside Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Owens & Brumley Funeral Home.
Mrs. Haddox was born Dec. 20, 1926, in Clay County, Texas. She was a former employee of Levi Strauss as a seamstress. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Delmer of Wichita Falls; two daughters, Cathy Haddox and Marie Benton, both of Wichita Falls; a son, David of Wichita Falls; four sisters, Pauline Jackson of Bowie, Texas, Mary Fagan, Myrtle Lee and Marie Riddle, all of Levelland, Texas; four brothers, Elmer McKee of Everman, Texas, B.W. McKee of Splendora, Texas, Junior McKee of Omaha, Texas, and W.C. McKee of Sundown, Texas; her mother, Vera Jane McKee of Bowie, Texas; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.
The family will be at the funeral home tonight from 7-9 p.m.

Jessie Moore
HENRIETTA, Texas – Jessie ‘Grandma’ Moore, 91, died Friday, July 24, 1998, at a Henrietta hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Davis Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tim Jones, pastor of First Baptist Church of Henrietta, officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery in Seymour, Texas.
Mrs. Moore was born May 14, 1907, in Chillicothe, Texas. Her husband, W.A. Moore, died in 1978. She was a nurse and a Baptist. A daughter, Tina Jane Stroble, died in 1932.
Survivors include two sons, Marvin Price of Gonzales, Texas, and Joe Stroble of Houston; two daughters, Jean Stallcup of Scotland, Texas, and Jeanette Behnsch of Gonzales; a sister, Lola Self of Scotland; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The family will be at the funeral home this evening from 7-8 p.m.

William D. Petrie
BOWIE, Texas – William D. Petrie, 78, died Friday, July 24, 1998, at his Alvord, Texas, residence.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Alvord Cemetery with the Rev. Homer Martin, a retired United Methodist minister of Bowie, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Burgess-Fry-Owens-Brumley Funeral Home.
Mr. Petrie was born Oct. 27, 1919, in Columbus, Ohio. He and Thelma O’Kelley were married Jan. 20, 1990, in Hillsboro, Ohio. He served in the Navy as a chief petty officer for 26 years. He was awarded the Meritorious Service, Good Conduct, American Campaign, World War II Victory, Asiatic Pacific Campaign, Armed Forces and Philippine Liberation medals. He was a member of the Sheetmetal Workers Union Local No. 16 in Portland, Ore.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Gail E. O’Malley of Keller, Texas, and Kim S. Hayes of Canby, Ore.; two sons, David S. of Lynwood, Wash., and Tracy C. of Hillsboro, Ore.; six brothers, Jack, David, Joe, Tom, Phil and Jerry all of Columbus; three sisters, Jo Ellen Petrie and Martha Ann Dill, both of Columbus, and Sarah Swan of Marion, Ind.; and five grandchildren.

Ruby Leota Walker
FREDERICK, Okla. – Ruby Leota Walker, 83, of Frederick, died Friday, July 24, 1998, at a Frederick hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Gish Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Sam Starr, minister of Church of Christ of Frederick, officiating. Burial will be in Rogers Cemetery near Pleasant Valley Community.
Mrs. Walker was born Oct. 31, 1914, in Santa Fe, Okla. She attended Velma and Santa Fe schools. She and Olden Walker were married Oct. 31, 1931, in Mountain Park, Okla. He died June 12, 1985. She was a member of the Home Builders Extension Club for more than 50 years. She was a former member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School. She was involved in Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Ray of Frederick and Roy of Davidson, Okla.; three daughters, Rita Edwards of Vernon, Texas, Marva Magee of Bradenton, Fla., and Mary Nicholson of Springtown, Texas; two brothers, Johnnie and Ray Campbell both of Duncan, Okla.; a sister, Helen Hash of Duncan; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Association.

W.D. ‘Durward‘ Daws
THROCKMORTON, Texas – W.D. “Durward” Daws, 98, died Monday, July 27, 1998, in a Thorckmorton hospital.
Services will be at 3:30 p.m. today at Merriman-Archer Funeral Home with the Rev. Luther Holowell officiating. Burial will be in Throckmorton Cemetery.
Mr. Daws was born Feb. 15, 1900, in Young County, Texas. He was a lifetime resident of Throckmorton County. He was a rancher and a Presbyterian. He graduated from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth in 1920.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Nan Daws of Wichita Falls; and several cousins.
Carleen Berend McKee
Carleen Berend McKee, 48, died Saturday, July 25, 1998, in a Wichita Falls hospital.
Christian wake will be at 7 p.m. today at Hampton Vaughan Crestview Chapel. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church with the Rev. William Winaski officiating. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery in Henrietta, Texas.
Mrs. McKee was born Jan. 25, 1950, in Wichita Falls. She and Richard McKee were married Aug. 3, 1968, in Windthorst, Texas. She was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church and Our Lady Queen of Peace Altar Society.
Survivors include her husband; her mother, Grace Frerich of Scotland, Texas; two daughters, Karen Beaman and Laura, both of Wichita Falls; a sister, Jeannie Parkey of Holliday, Texas; three brothers, Jimmy Berend of Texas City, Texas, Tommy Berend of Lake Kickapoo, Texas, and Chuck Berend of Windthorst; and a grandchild.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 1705 Dayton, Wichita Falls, or to Volunteer Services Council of Wichita Falls State Hospital.

Mary Lucile Minnich
WALTERS, Okla. – Mary Lucile Collins Minnich, 91, of Walters died Monday, July 27, 1998.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church of Walters with the Rev. Bob Copeland officiating. Burial will be in Walters Cemetery under the direction of Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home.
Mrs. Minnich was born Oct. 13, 1906, near Temple, Okla. She and Dewey F. Minnich were married Nov. 29, 1930. He died in 1979. She attended grade school at Gregg, a one-room school, and graduated from Temple High School in 1925. She was a lifetime resident of the Walters and Temple areas. She taught twos school terms at Pioneer, a one-room school in Cotton County. She then attended Draughon’s Business College in Wichita Falls. She worked for Lone Star Gas Company in Walters before becoming the city clerk, cashier and bookkeeper for the city of Walters. She later worked as society editor for the Walters Herald, and retired in 1969 after 18 years. In 1979, she returned to work at the Herald to work part-time until her second retirement at age 80. She was a member of the Walters First Christian Church for more than 50 years and sang in the choir.
Survivors include two daughters, Devonna Minnich of Lawton, Okla., and Wyva Rheu Copeland of Walters; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Myrtle Simpson Everett
Myrtle Simpson Everett, 103, died Saturday, July 25, 1998, in a Wichita Falls hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at West Side Baptist Church with the Rev. Wade Hood, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Iowa Park under the direction of Owens & Brumley Funeral Home.
Mrs. Everett was born Dec. 10, 1894, in Erath County, Texas. She and W.H. Everett were married in 1939. He died in 1967. She traveled by wagon from Erath County to Black Tower, N.M., where she and her family lived in a dugout on a land grant in 1906. She was a homemaker and a member of West Side Baptist Church. She had lived in Wichita Falls since 1967.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews, including Doy Terry of Wichita Falls.

Charlie W. Chastain
Charlie W. Chastain, 59, died Friday, July 24, 1998, in his Wichita Falls home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Owens & Brumley Funeral Home with the Rev. Ivor Koch, pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
Mr. Chastain was born July 23, 1939, in Bushnell, Fla. He was an attorney in Wichita Falls and was an instructor at Vernon Regional Junior College for 20 years. He served as a captain in the Air Force as an accounting and finance officer. He had lived in Wichita Falls since 1970.
Survivors include a son, Allen of Wichita Falls; and a daughter, Anita of Birmingham, Ala.

Vera Smith
Vera Clarke Smith, 87, of Albuquerque, N.M., died Saturday, July 25, 1998.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Floral Heights United Methodist Church with the Rev. Merwin Turner, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Park under the direction of Lunn’s Colonial Funeral Home.
Mrs. Smith was born Nov. 20, 1910, in Brenham, Texas. She grew up in Comanche, Texas. She attended John Tarleton Junior College and graduated from North Texas State Teachers College in Denton, Texas. She taught elementary school in Comanche until she married. She was a homemaker and a member of Floral Heights United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the 1934 Study Club and Women’s Forum. She lived in Wichita Falls until 1991. Her husband, E.B. Smith, died in 1986.
Survivors include a daughter, Wanda Andersen of Albuquerque; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Floral Heights United Methodist Church or to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Deborah Diane Carruth
WEATHERFORD, Texas – Deborah Diane ‘Debby’ Carruth, 46, of Springtown, Texas, died Friday, July 24, 1998, in an Azle, Texas, hospital.
Services were Sunday at Victory Baptist Church in Weatherford. Burial was in Springtown Cemetery under the direction of Galebreth-Pickard Funeral Home in Weatherford.
Mrs. Carruth was born Jan. 31, 1952, in Knox City, Texas. She and David Carruth were married March 20, 1971, in Andrews, Texas. She graduated from Munday, Texas, High School in 1970.
Survivors include her husband; seven sisters, Louise Tuggle of Plains, Texas, Maxine Napper of Midland, Texas, Peggy Albus of Burleson, Texas, Lorene “Mickey” Hansard of Brownfield, Texas, Doris Latham of Bowie, Texas, and Helen Lain and Sue Kelly, both of Fort Worth; and two brothers, Z.T. Armstrong of Fort Worth and James Armstrong of Crowley, Texas.
