Monte Ann Pickens
HOUSTON – Monte Ann Parker Pickens, 53, died Saturday, July 25, 1998, in Houston.
Services were held Wednesday, July 29, at Champion Forest Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Elliott and the Rev. Davis Wood officiating. Burial was in Klein Memorial Park Cemetery FM 2920 under the direction of Klein Funeral Home.
Mrs. Pickens was born Dec. 11, 1944, in Olney, Texas. She and George Pickens had been married for 32 years. She attended Windsor Park Hamlin Junior High School and graduated from W.B. Ray High School in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1962. She had lived in Houston since 1972. She was involved in Farm and Market Road 1960 Real Estate Community for the past 16 years. She was a marketing representative and escrow officer for Alamo Title, Heritage Division. She was a member of Champion Forest Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Clayton Allen; a daughter, Melissa Ann; and her mother, Frances Young Parker.
Russell Dean Turner
Russell Dean Turner, 69, of Wichita Falls, died Friday, July 31, 1998, in Wichita Falls.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Evangel Temple Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Jack Dial officiating. Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Park under the direction of Owens & Brumley Funeral Home.
Mr. Turner was born Nov. 4, 1928, in Iowa Park. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy. He was a retired optician and a lifetime resident of Wichita Falls. He was a member of Evangel Temple of God Church and the Men’s Ministries.
Survivors include his wife, Betty; a daughter, Velinda Britt of Wichita Falls; a son, Rusty Turner of Wichita Falls; and two granddaughters.
The family will be at the funeral home tonight from 7-9 p.m.
Ruth Higginbotham
Ruth Higginbotham, 77, of Wichita Falls, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church with the Rev. Charles Paulson, pastor, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Owens & Brumley Funeral Home.
Mrs. Higginbotham was born June 2, 1921, in Wichita Falls. She and Howard Higginbotham were married Dec. 16, 1946, in Wichita Falls. She was a retired practical nurse, a scrub nurse at Wichita General Hospital, and a dental assistant in surgery at the Sheppard Air Force Base Hospital. She also worked for Dr. Charles Dryden, Dr. Theiner, and the Urology Group. She enjoyed gardening and water aerobics. She was a Charter Member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Robin D. of Wichita Falls; two daughters, Carol Hanson of Burkburnett and Loretta Smith of Wichita Falls; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church Building Fund.
Mary S. Mesics
Mary S. Mesics of Wichita Falls died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, in Wichita Falls.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Ivor Koch, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Park under the direction of Hampton Vaughan Crestview Chapel.
Mrs. Mesics and Frank Mesics were married June 4, 1970, in Fort Worth. She moved to Wichita Falls from Marlin, Texas, and had lived in Wichita Falls since 1941. She was a homemaker and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A son, Albert Esquibel, died in 1986.
Survivors include her husband; five daughters, Martha Shutes of Wichita Falls, Estolia Lopez, Mary Ann Rodriguez, Jo Ann Rangel and Silva Espinoza, all of Fort Worth; five sons, Joe, Carlos and David Esquibel, all of Fort Worth, Perfecto Esquibel of California and Joseph Mesics of Wichita Falls; three brothers, Rufus Sanchez and David Sanchez, both of Wichita Falls, and Issac Sanchez of Chicago; three sisters, Bernice Acosta, Martha Garcia and Nellie Esquibel, all of Wichita Falls; 18 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
Christian wake will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

A.C. Todd
OKLAHOMA CITY – A.C. Todd, 70, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, in Oklahoma City.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at North Colonial Chapel of Vondel L. Smith and Son Mortuary, 13125 North MacArthur. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Burkburnett Cemetery.
Mr. Todd was born April 3, 1928, in Burkburnett. He and Bobbye June Price were married Oct. 25, 1975, in Wichita Falls. He was an oil and gas drilling contractor for the F.W.A. Drilling Company for 35 years before forming the Todd Drilling Company. He moved to Oklahoma City in 1977. He was a member of the Metropolitan Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gary C. Todd and Douglas Burroughs; three daughters, Vickie Thompson, Deborah Burroughs and Dawn Burroughs; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Edward Pete Wiist
OKLAHOMA CITY – Edward Pete Wiist, 84, died Thursday, July 30, 1998, at his residence.
Evening prayer service will be at 7 p.m. today at Smith and Kernke Chapel, 1401 N.W. 23rd. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Monday at Our Lady’s Cathedral, 32nd and Western. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Wichita Falls.
Mr. Wiist was born Jan. 17, 1914, in Hurnville, Texas. He and his wife, Toni, were married for 56 years. He was raised and attended schools in Henrietta, Texas. He was a retired carpenter. He had been a resident of Oklahoma City for 38 years. He was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help of Oklahoma City, and was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 1038 of Oklahoma City.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Ann Wustrack and Carolyn Keegan; a son, David; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Lt. Col. Lawrence Beard
Lt. Col. Lawrence ‘Larry’ Beard, 51, of Wichita Falls died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at a Houston hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Lunn’s Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Jeremy Bratcher, student pastor of Southside Baptist Church of Wichita Falls, officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Lawton, Okla.
Mr. Beard was born April 30, 1947, in Portsmith, Va. He and Delores Thompson were married Aug. 20, 1966, in Lawton. He served as a lieutenant colonel in the Army from 1972 to 1990. He was awarded the Legion of Merit First Oak Leaf Cluster, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal Second Oak Leaf Cluster, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal First Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Achievement Medal First Oak Leaf Cluster, the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Expert Infantryman Badge and the Master Army Aviator Badge. He was a member of the Texas High School Coaches Association and the Texas Girls Coaches Association. He was a teacher for the Iowa Park Consolidated Independent School District. He had lived in Wichita Falls since 1992 when he moved here from Wiesbaden, Germany. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife; his parents, Delmar and Patricia Beard of Austin and Mary Beard of Wichita Falls; two sons, David DeWitt Beard of Paris, Texas, and Dennis E. of Dallas; a daughter, Corrie Mae Bratcher of Wichita Falls; a brother, Gary of Wichita Falls; a sister, Darlene Price of Anderson, S.C.; and one grandchild.
The family will be at the funeral home today from 2-3 p.m.

NOCONA, Texas – Charles A. ‘Sonny’ Grimsley Jr., 67, of Nocona, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, in Nocona.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in Nocona Cemetery with Dale Scott officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Jerry Woods Funeral Home.
Mr. Grimsley was born Jan. 12, 1931, in Hedley, Texas. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
Roy E. Robertson
SEYMOUR, Texas – Roy E. Robertson, 51, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, in his Seymour residence.
Services will be at 4 p.m. today at Calvary Baptist Church with Jim Novak officiating. Burial will be in Round Timbers, Texas, Cemetery under the direction of Archer Funeral Home.
Mr. Robertson was born March 12, 1947, in California. He moved to Seymour as a child from Olney, Texas. He worked as a welder and a bulldozer operator.
Survivors include a daughter, Lisa Costello of Seymour; two brothers, Gerald of Austin and Lynn of Del Rio, Texas; and a grandchild.
Sharon Lanette Ramsey
JACKSBORO, Texas – Sharon Lanette Ramsey, 40, of Jermyn, Texas, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, in Jack County.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Coker Funeral Home Chapel with Jay Lockhart, of Jermyn Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Ramsey was born July 11, 1958, in Jacksboro. She and Brad Ramsey were married July 13, 1984, in Jacksboro. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was a nurse for Palo Pinto Home Health.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Ressa Pippin of Jermyn; two sons, B.J. and Ryan, both of Jermyn; her father and stepmother, Dean and Sue Fenter of Jacksboro; and her mother, Dorothy Butler of Jacksboro.
Winnie Jewell Chappell
NOCONA, Texas – Winnie Jewell Martin Chappell, 73, of Nocona, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, in a Nocona hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Scott-Morris Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Ballard, pastor of First Baptist Church of Battle Mountain, Nev., officiating. Burial will be in Nocona Cemetery.
Mrs. Chappell was born June 14, 1925, in Throckmorton, Texas. She and Glen Devon Chappell were married May 6, 1945, in Hamilton County, Texas. She was baptized as a teen-ager in Richland Baptist Church in Seymour, Texas. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Nelda Hopkins of Crowell, Texas; four sons, Melvin of Gautier, Miss., Carl of Saint Jo, Texas, Paul of Battle Mountain and John of Vernon, Texas; a sister, Fay Chappell of South Fork, Colo.; two brothers, Rowdy Martin of Lamar, Colo., and Lewis Martin of Amarillo, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Jack Martin
HASKELL, Texas – Jack Martin, 69, of Haskell, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, in an Abilene, Texas, hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Eastside Baptist Church with the Rev. Eric Clark and the Rev. David Page officiating. Burial will be in Rochester Cemetery under the direction of Holden-McCauley Funeral Directors.
Mr. Martin was born in Haskell County. He and Doris Marie McGhee were married Aug. 14, 1981, in Haskell. He was an Army veteran. He worked as an exterminator for Reddy Pest Control in Haskell for 30 years. He was a member of the Church of God of Haskell.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jack Martin Jr. of Breckenridge, Texas, and Thomas of Santos, Texas; five daughters, Kay Pelton of Anson, Texas, Kim Purcell of Brownwood, Texas, Kristy Becker of Kaufman, Texas, Debbie Holder of Odessa, Texas, and Karen Goode of Clyde, Texas; 22 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.

Morris E. Vessels
VERNON, Texas – Morris E. Vessels, 91, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, in a Wichita Falls hospital.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Wilbarger Memorial Park with Dr. Robert Prince, pastor of First Baptist Church of Vernon, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Sullivan Funeral Home.
Mr. Vessels was born March 15, 1907, in Fannin County, Texas. He and Sybbie Cleo Poynter were married July 2, 1939, in Dallas. She died June 26, 1977. He and Delores M. Belcher were married April 8, 1980. He served in the Navy during World War II. He began his career in 1928 as a barber, and retired three weeks ago. He moved to Vernon in 1932 and was a member of First Baptist Church of Vernon. He was a member of Woodmen of the World, Oddfellows, and the Barber Guild.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Bill of Memphis, Tenn., and Cleve of Slaton, Texas; a daughter, Ruth Ann Vessels of Lake Tahoe, Calif.; two grandsons; two stepsons, Benny Belcher of Vernon and Verlan Belcher of Amarillo, Texas; six step grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at 2 p.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home.
The family will be at 3205 Paradise in Vernon.

Maria N. Garcia
Maria N. Garcia, 65, of Byers, Texas, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, in a Wichita Falls nursing home.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Byers United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rick Lucier officiating. Burial will be in Byers Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Owens & Brumley Funeral Home.
Mrs. Garcia was born Sept. 8, 1932, in Guanajuato, Mexico. She had lived in Byers for 34 years. She was a homemaker and a member of Byers United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Carlos Garcia of Byers; four sons, Carlos Garcia Jr. of Longview, Texas, Armando of Byers, Noe of Fort Worth and Trini of Wichita Falls; two daughters, Maria Strickland of San Jose, Calif., and Rocieo Chacon of Dodge City, Kan.; three sisters, Josephine Garcia of Hearn, Texas, Claudia Tapia of Guanajuato and Juanita Chavez of Mexico; and nine grandchildren.

BURKBURNETT – Barbara Ann Hamilton Ashton, 63, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, in her Ennis, Texas, residence.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Owens & Brumley Funeral Home of Burkburnett with the Rev. Anthony West, pastor of Abundant Life Church of God in Burkburnett, officiating. Burial will be in Burkburnett Cemetery.
Ms. Ashton was born July 10, 1935, in Wichita Falls. She was the manager of a beauty shop. She lived in Burkburnett before moving to Ennis two years ago. She was a Methodist.
Survivors include a daughter, Sherry Braddy of Ennis; a son, Randell of Burkburnett; her mother, Estelle Hamilton of Blue Ridge, Texas; two brothers, Joe Hamilton of Iowa Park and Pete Hamilton of Burkburnett; and a sister, Carolyn Sue Tucker of Blue Ridge.
Betty E. Fisher
Betty Eileen Sprunger Fisher, 53, of Wichita Falls, died Saturday, Aug, 1, 1998, in Wichita Falls.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Western Hills Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack Jordan, interim pastor, and the Rev. Jerry Hodges, former pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Burkburnett Cemetery under the direction of Owens & Brumley Funeral Home.
Mrs. Fisher was born March 16, 1945, in Southgate, Calif. She was a graduate of Grace Bible College in Omaha, Neb., and Southwestern Oklahoma State College in Weatherford, Okla. She worked as an elementary teacher following graduation and was the director of a daycare service in Wichita Falls. She had lived in Wichita Falls for 20 years. She was a member of Western Hills Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Michael; two sons, Bradley of Fayetteville, Ark., and Kevin of Olympia, Wash.; her parents, Lyman and Adeline Sprunger of Canton, Okla.; and three sisters, JoAnne Sinclair of Canton, Melody Plemmons of Sacramento, Calif., and Becky Whiting of Enid, Okla.

Wayne Calhoun
Wayne Calhoun, 65, of Wichita Falls, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, in a Wichita Falls hospital.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Owens & Brumley Funeral Home with the Rev. Fred M. Bryant of Grace Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Park.
Mr. Calhoun was born Sept. 27, 1932, in Wichita Falls. He served in the Army. He was a longtime employee of Town and Country Mobile Homes. He retired in 1981 as general manager of the Wichita Falls manufacturing plant. He worked for the Texas Department of Mental Health and Retardation until 1998. He was a lifetime resident of Wichita Falls and a member of Grace Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; Bonnie Sue Avara Calhoun of Wichita Falls; a son, Steve of Wichita Falls; a daughter, Kathy Macha of Wichita Falls; a sister, Ellen J. Long of Austin; and two grandchildren.
The family will be at 1622 Willowick Drive.

Edith R. Tillman
ODESSA, Texas – Edith R. Tillman, 97, of Odessa, died Friday, July 31, 1998, in an Odessa nursing home.
Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. today in Riverside Cemetery in Wichita Falls. Arrangements are under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Mrs. Tillman was born Oct. 18, 1900, in Sherman, Texas. Her husband, Robert Tillman, died in 1944. She worked as a licensed vocational nurse. A daughter, Joyce Yvonne Tillman died in 1997. Another daughter, Carol June Anderson, died in 1989.
Survivors include a great-nephew, Edmond Lee Tillman of Odessa; and a great-niece, Darla Hadid of Odessa.
Hazel Lindsey
HENRIETTA, Texas – Hazel Lindsey, 94, of Wichita Falls, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, in a Wichita Falls nursing home.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Crestview Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Home.
Mrs. Lindsey was born Feb. 8, 1904, in Montague County, Texas. She and Lam Lindsey were married in 1920 in Bowie, Texas. He died in December 1996. She had lived in Wichita Falls for the past 72 years. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Wichita Falls.
Survivors include a daughter, Jean Wilkins of Wichita Falls; and a granddaughter.
