Joe Pershing Gilbert
Joe Pershing Gilbert, 80, of Wichita Falls died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, in a Wichita Falls hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael Miller officiating. Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Park under the direction of Lunn’s Colonial Funeral Home.
Mr. Gilbert was born Sept. 15, 1918, in Carbon, Texas. He and Josephine Bunch were married May 30, 1943, in Corsicana, Texas. He served in the Coast Guard from 1942 to 1945, achieving the rank of first class petty officer. He was a member of the Good Sam Travel Club and an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church for more than 40 years. He had worked for Texas Sash and Door of Fort Worth for more than 30 years and Shamburger Building Center of Wichita Falls for 10 years. He had lived in Wichita Falls since 1951. He was a graduate of McMurry College of Abilene, Texas.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jerry Lon and James Bryan, both of Wichita Falls; a brother, Charles Wade of St. Charles, Mo.; and six grandchildren.
The family will be at 2414 Barbados in Wichita Falls or 2612 Bretton in Wichita Falls.
Memorials may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, 1526 Weeks Street, Wichita Falls, Texas 76302.

Michael Joe Wilhite
FREDERICK, Okla. – Michael Joe Wilhite, 40, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, in his home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Jackson Funeral Home with the Rev. Brent Morey and Rev. Vernon Floyd officiating. Burial will be in Frederick Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Wilhite was born June. 5, 1958, in Mangum, Okla. He and Patricia M. Thrash were married April 18, 1985, in Vernon. He graduated from Frederick High School in 1976 and was employed by BTR. He was a member of the Bible Baptist Church of Frederick.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Ryeland Michael, Jarrod Courtland and Matland Drake Wilhite, all of Frederick; his parents, Wayne and Mary Wilhite of Frederick; and two sisters, Sandra Lynn Meggs of Frederick and Kristie Kennedy of Knoxville, Tenn.

Myrtle Hering
APPLETON, Minn. – Myrtle Hering, 78, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998.
Services were Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church of Appleton with the Rev. Linda Pedersen officiating. Burial was in Appleton City Cemetery under the direction of Vaala Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hering was born March 7, 1920, in Appleton. She and Calvin L. Hering were married March 5, 1940. She was baptized and confirmed at Appleton and attended and graduated from Appleton High School. She taught Sunday school and was a member of the Women’s Guild at Trinity Lutheran Church. While living in Appleton, she was a seamstress working out of her home. In 1970, she moved to Circle Pines. She was active in St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, where she was a member of the seniors group and the women’s Bible study group. She moved to South Carolina in 1996.
Survivors include three sons, Roger Hering of Wichita Falls, Richard Hering of Mt. Airy, Md., and Roland Hering of Clearfield Utah.; a daughter, Roma Lee Blair of Townville, S.C.; two brothers, Donald Schlieman of Appleton and Dale Schlieman of Selah, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Ruthie Garrison
HENRYETTA, Okla. – Ruthie “Marceen” Garrison, 69, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, in Schulter, Okla.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Schulter Methodist Church with the Rev. John Moore Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Greenhills Cemetery of Sapulpa, Okla., under the direction of Shurden Funeral Home.
Mrs. Garrison was born Dec. 9, 1929, in Blackwell, Okla. She and Alvin H. Garrison were married Jan. 28, 1949, in Yuma, Ariz. She was a homemaker, a member of Schulter Methodist Church and a member of Rebekah Lodge.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Daniel Lee Garrison of Schulter; and eight grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the St. Francis Hospice of Tulsa, Okla.

Doyle J. Ross
BURKBURNETT – Doyle J. Ross, 74, of Burkburnett died Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, in a Wichita Falls hospital.
Services are pending with Owens & Brumley Funeral Home of Burkburnett.

Viviano Garcia
Viviano Garcia, 97, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, in a Wichita Falls nursing home.
Services are pending with Lunn’s Colonial Funeral Home.

John Woodall
OLNEY, Texas – John Woodall died Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, in an Olney nursing home.
Services are pending with Lunn’s Funeral Home.

Virtle Mae Baker
VERNON, Texas – Virtle Mae Baker, 87, died Friday, Jan. 1, 1999, in a Vernon nursing home.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. today in Charlie, Texas, Cemetery with Charles Parker of Vernon officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Sullivan Funeral Home.
Mrs. Baker was born April 20, 1911, in Gassville, Ark. She and Bowie Berry Baker were married Aug. 5, 1931, in Okfuskee, Okla. He died March 19, 1977. She was a retired ordained Pentecostal preacher and homemaker. She served at two churches in Wichita Falls in the 1960s and had been a resident of Vernon for three years.
Survivors include four sons, Billy Baker of Amarillo, Texas, Louie Baker of Canyon, Texas, Lucky Baker of Vernon and George Baker of Sparta, Wis.; two daughters, Shirley Steward of Fort Worth and Diana Knight of Watuga, Texas; 28 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Family Council at Vernon Care Center.

George Grover Allen
George Grover Allen, 74, of Wichita Falls died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, in a local hospice center.
Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Wedneday in Crestview Cemetery with the Rev. Roger Deerinwater, pastor of Archer City First Baptist Church, and the Rev. Chad Stubblefield, pastor of Mankins Baptist Church, officiating.
Mr. Allen was born Dec. 27, 1924, in Wichita Falls. He served as chief petty officer in the Navy during World War II and was discharged in 1945. He was a member of the Archer City First Baptist Church. He was a member of Faith Masonic Lodge No. 1158 AF&AM. He was a retired contractor and home builder. He was a lifetime resident of Wichita Falls. His wife, Dorrethea, died Jan. 16, 1985. A son, Pat Allen, died Aug. 30, 1980.
Survivors include a son, Mike Allen of Trophy Club, Texas; a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Sly of Grand Prairie, Texas; three sisters, Emma Carrigan of Wichita Falls, Leonida Ausley of Henderson, Nev., and Luryel Worsham of Balch Springs, Texas; a brother, James Allen of Wichita Falls; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Noel Andrus Sr.
IOWA PARK, Texas -- Noel Andrus Sr., 93, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, in his home.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Highland Cemetery with Steve Beckwith, pastor of First Baptist Church of Iowa Park officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Dutton Funeral Home.
Mr. Andrus was born Jan. 19, 1905, in Tarrant County, Texas. He and Ollie Mae Holyfield were married Nov. 2, 1924, in Henrietta, Texas. She died Feb. 14, 1989. He had worked for Lone Star Gas Company and was a former dispatcher for Iowa Park Police Department. He also owned a washateria and wrecking yard. He was a resident of Iowa Park for 33 years moving from Wichita Falls. He was a member of the Baptist religion.
Survivors include a son, Noel Jr. of Bradley, Okla.; two sisters, Pearl Draper and Almira Morris both of Burkburnett, Texas; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Barbara Ellen Yoakum
Barbara Ellen Yoakum, 53, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, in a local hospital.
No services are scheduled. Arrangements are under the direction of Owens & Brumley Funeral Home.
Miss Yoakum was born Feb. 12, 1945, in Wichita Falls. She was a executive secretary. She was a member of Faith Free Will Baptist Church. She had been a resident of Wichita Falls most of her life.
Survivors include her parents, Edward W. & John Powell of Wichita Falls; and a sister, Jerri Jeter of Normal, Ill.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Faith Free Will Baptist Church.

Michaela C. Rose Hoff
Michaela Christina Rose Hoff, 9-month-old daughter of Christopher and Jennifer Hoff of Wichita Falls, died Sunday, Jan. 3, 1999, in a local hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Petrolia with the Rev. Richard Rust, pastor of Faith Freewill Baptist Church, and the Rev. Father Chris Davis officiating. Burial will be in Petrolia Cemetery under the direction of Owens & Brumley Funeral Home.
Michaela was born March 10, 1998, in Wichita Falls. She was a lifetime resident of Wichita Falls.
Survivors include her parents; two sisters, Madeline Harris and Brooke, both of Wichita Falls; her grandparents, Mike and Terri Hoff and Jim and Jeanne Lowe, all of Henrietta, Texas, Joel and Joann Maness and Larry and Peggy Gillen, all of Wichita Falls; her great-grand parents, Dorothy Brock of Wichita Falls, John and Inez Brock of Wichita Falls, Harley Maness of Petrolia, Texas, and Joann Hoff and Rosemary Schroeder, both of Windthorst; her great-great grandparents, Dacey Briggs and Lucy Humpert, both of Wichita Falls.

Harry E. Smith
Harry E. Smith, 75, of Wichita Falls died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, in a local hospital.
Services with full military honor will be 2 p.m. Friday at Evangel Temple Assembly of God with the Rev. Jack Dial, pastor, and Rev. Paul Kuykendall, assistant pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Park under the direction of Owens & Brumley Funeral Home.
Mr. Smith was born July 14, 1923, in Birmingham, Ala. He and Phyllis Roberts were married in 1949. He attended Marion Military Institution in Alabama before entering the Army in 1943. Upon graduation from Bombardier School at Rosewell Army Air Field Sept. 30, 1944, he was assigned to B-17 Crew Training at Biggs Field Training. After completing training he was pulled to the 2nd Bomb Group on Okinawa.
When the war ended, he remained overseas for two years. When he returned to the United States, he was assigned to the famous 509th Bomb Group, in Rosewell, where he remained for 10 years on the select crew for B-29s, B-50s then B-47s. In 1950 he participated in the first air-to-air refueling over the North Polar Region. His crew also represented the Air Force in the Royal Air Force Visual Bombing Competition in England.
In 1958, he attended the Nuclear Weapons Maintenance Course and was assigned to the 7th TDS on Okinawa as operations officer and later as deputy commander. He extended his overseas tour and joined the 498th Missile Group. He returned to Lowry Air Force to train crews on the missiles he had worked with overseas. He became an administrative expert while at Lowry and was assigned to PACAF Base command, Hickman Air Force Base, Hawaii as executive officer and chief of administrative services. His support to all Pacific bases won him the Pacific Air Force nominee for the federal Paperwork Management Award.
His final assignment was to Sheppard Air Force Base as executive officer for the Technical Training Wing. He retired Oct. 31, 1972, in Wichita Falls as a lieutenant colonel.
He was owner and operator of Smitty’s Model A since 1974 and was a member and president of Model A Club. He was a charter member and founder of the North Texas Model A Ford Owners Association, and was a member of the Model A Ford Club of America. He was the Wichita Falls coordinator for the Great American Race, was a member of the Northwest Texas Field and Stream Association and was a charter member of Texas Weapon Collectors Association. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association and had lived in Wichita Falls since 1971.
Survivors include two daughters, Christy Ann Taylor and Susan Dee Lane, both of Wichita Falls; a son, Harry E. Smith III of Celeste, Texas; three brothers, Jimmy Smith of South Carolina, and Amos Smith and Cecil Smith, both of Birmingham; two sisters, Bertha Fuqua of Mississippi and Patsy Sandifeur of Birmingham; and four grandchildren.

Cecil Melvin Means
Cecil Melvin Means, 76, of Bedford, Texas, formally of Throckmorton, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, in a Bedford hospital.
Services are pending with Merriman-Archer Funeral Home of Throckmorton.
