Harley Gean Layland
Harley Gean Layland, 68, of Wichita Falls died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, in a local hospice center.
Services will be 11:30 a.m. Monday at Owens & Brumley Funeral Home Chapel with L. Keith Parker officiating. Burial will be in Bowman, Texas Cemetery.
Mr. Layland was born July 17, 1930, in Wapanucka, Okla. He was a former manager for White’s Store for 10 years and was self employed in construction for 30 years.
Survivors include his wife, June; two daughters, Linda Haumesser of Wichita Falls and Judy Coronado of Marietta, Ga.; two sisters, Novella Brand of Wichita Falls and Billie Lee Main of Amarillo, Texas; a brother, Jack of Cedar Hill, Texas; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Philip M. Paulk
Philip M. Paulk, 58, of Wichita Falls died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999.
Services will be 4:30 p.m. Monday at Faith Village Church of Christ with Pat Phelps officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Lunn’s Colonial Funeral Home.
Mr. Paulk was born May 23, 1940, in Sharpes, Fla. He and Roberta Ray were married on March 23, 1989, in Wichita Falls. He served in the Air Force from July 6, 1959 until Oct. 31, 1979. He served in Vietnam and achieved the rank of Master Sergeant. He received the Service Medal with four bronze stars, the Campaign Medal, the Galantry Cross with Palm, and the Meritorious Service Medal. He was a retired Assistant Director of Security for Wichita General Hospital.
Survivors include his wife; six children; three brothers; several grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Wichita Falls or Faith Village Church of Christ.

Carolyn McBride
Carolyn McBride, 52, of Wichita Falls died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Monday in Crestview Memorial Park with the Rev. Wesley Hodges, pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Hampton Vaughan Crestview.
Mrs. McBride was born Nov. 23, 1946, in Athens, Texas. She and Mike McBride were married June 1965, in Wichita Falls. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and moved from Athens to Wichita Falls in 1968. She worked as a secretary in the finance department at WFISD for 27 years.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Mica Smyth of Wichita Falls; a son, Chad McBride of Odessa, Texas; a sister, Annette Watson of Mesquite, Texas; and four grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Wichita Falls, P.O. Box 4804, Wichita Falls, Texas 76308.
Visitation is at 4 to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mildred Rushing Fiksdal
Mildred Rushing Fiksdal, 85, of Dean, Texas, died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, in Wichita Falls.
Services will be 3 p.m. Monday at Hampton Vaughan Downtown Chapel with the Bro. Bill McKee, a Baptist minister, officiating. Burial in Hope Cemetery in Henrietta, Texas.
Mrs. Fiksdal was born June 16, 1913, in Clay County, Texas. She was a seamstress at Levi Strauss Co. during the 30s. She worked for Giles Grocery Store, retiring in 1975. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Dean. Her husband, J.D. Rushing died Nov. 2, 1978. Her husband, Marvel Fiksdal, died Nov. 20, 1991.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Hansard of Wichita Falls and Norma Mulkey of Dean; a son, Charles Rushing of Dean; a sister, Mae Dishman of Dean; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 12850 Spurling Dr., Suite 100, Dallas, Texas 75230.
Visitation will be today at Hampton Vaughn Downtown Chapel from 4 to 5p.m.

Lawrence Gale Balsley
IOWA PARK – Lawrence Gale Balsley, 79, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, in Wichita Falls.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Faith Baptist Church with the Dr. Greg Ammons, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery under the direction of Dutton Funeral Home.
Mr. Balsley was born Dec. 8, 1919, in Springfield, Ill. He and Hazel Redford were married Nov. 2, 1942, in Houston, Texas. She died August 12, 1985. He and Mildred Stogsdill Parkey were married Feb. 14, 1995, in Texas. He was stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base in 1960 until retiring as Chief Master Sgt. in Sept. 30, 1969. He worked for the Air Force in propulsion maintenance. He was very active in the Faith Baptist Church activities. He moved from England to Iowa Park and lived there 39 years.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Bramley Black of Iowa Park; a sister, Phyllis Denny of California; and three grandchildren.
The family will be at the funeral home today from 2 to 4p.m.

Martha Ann Hobbs
GRAHAM, Texas – Martha Ann Hobbs, 58, of Graham died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, at her home.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Holt, pastor of Downtown Church of God, the Rev. W.T. Tidmore of Weatherford, Texas, and the Rev. Mary Langley, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Pioneer Cemetery under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hobbs was born Dec. 23, 1940, in Graham. She and Billy Frank Hobbs were married Oct. 31, 1959, in Graham. He died Sept. 15, 1993. She was a retired agent for the Fort Worth Star Telegram and a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Eric Hobbs of Crowley, Texas, and Steve Hobbs of Graham; her mother, Esther Lee Lowe of Graham; two sisters, Geraldine Lewis of Graham and Ida Nell Montana of Hurst, Texas; a brother, Lefty Lowe of Albany, Texas; and two grandchildren.
The family will be at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m.

W. Wilson Sherman
VERNON, Texas – W. Wilson Sherman, 79, of Vernon died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999 in a Wichita Falls hospital.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Monday in Eastview Cemetery with the Rev. Derrell Patterson, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Community Funeral Home.
Mr. Sherman was born Oct. 22, 1919, in Hobert, Okla. He and Mary Ann White were married in 1947, in Wellington, Texas. He served in the Army during World War II. He was an owned and operated Sherman Music Store in Vernon with his wife.
Survivors include his wife; two sisters, Hazel Hensley of Oklahoma City and Leona Iverson of Madera, Calif.

George D. Pedigo
SAINT JO, Texas – George D. Pedigo, 76, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, in a local nursing home.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Saint Jo with the Rev. Mel Caraway, Rev. Ricky Kerr and Rev. Mike Miller officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Park Cemetery in Saint Jo under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Mr. Pedigo was born Sept. 9, 1922, in Gainsville, Texas. He and Anna Lee Massie were married March 28, 1943, in Winfield, Kan. As a civilian, he taught Naval Ensign Aviators to fly and land on carriers and in the Air Force he was a flight officer and instructor during World War II where he was a member of the ferry command. He served on the Red River Boy Scout Council and sponsored the Little League Baseball team for several years. He was a past charter member of the Saint Jo Lions Club and served several times as president. He was a charter member of the Saint Jo Chamber of Commerce and the City Council. He served as Treasurer and was a trustee of the Wichita Falls district of the First United Methodist Church where he was a member. He was branch manager for Oliver Farm Machinery in Dallas and Chicago. He owned and operated the Geo. D. Pedigo Insurance Agency and Realty for over 30 years where he was a real estate broker and insurance agent. He lived in Saint Jo most of his live.
Survivors include his wife; and a daughter, Donna Arizarry of Amarillo, Texas.
The family will be at the funeral home today from 3 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
A family meal will be held at noon Monday at the Methodist Church Annex.

Winston Winford ‘Cass’ Casstevens
Winston Winford ‘Cass’ Casstevens, 85, of Wichita Falls died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, at a local nursing home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Wichita Falls, with Dr. Robert Allen, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery under the direction of Lunn’s colonial Funeral Home.
Mr. Casstevens was born Sept. 11, 1913, in Everman, Texas. He and Ellen Marie Robinson were married Aug. 3, 1940, in Walters, Okla. She died Nov. 24, 1976. He and Nell R. Bates were married June 11, 1983 in Wichita Falls. He moved to Kirkland, Texas, in his youth and graduated from High school in 1931. He attended Wichita Falls Junior College and then West Texas State College at Canyon, Texas. He was the co-owner of A and B Lock and Safe Company were he was in management, sales and service of bicycles, mowers, locks and safes. He was retired in 1972. In January 1981, he helped form the Senior Citizens Dance Club at the Wichita Falls Activities Center and was manager of the club until Oct. 1990. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Couples Sunday School Class, AARP Chapter 947 and the Red Door Senior Center. His son, Winston Edward Casstevens, died April 5, 1963.
Survivors include his wife; two step-sons, Ned F. Bates of Wichita Falls and Carl L. Bates of Rockwell, Texas; a step-daughter, Patricia Ann Majors of Chandler, Texas; a brother, Emmitt Casstevens of Garland, Texas; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The family will be at the funeral home from 2 to 3 p.m., receiving friends in the hallway west of the sanctuary.
Memorials may be made to Faith Mission or Professor Edward Scholarship Fund at First United Methodist Church,

Clarence E. McCollough, 83, of Wichita Falls died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, in a Wichita Falls hospital.
Services are pending with Lunn’s Colonial Funeral Home.

HENRIETTA, Texas – Collin Ross Sanderson, infant son of Clay and Kim Sanderson, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, in a Fort Worth hospital.
Services are pending with Davis Funeral Home.

Kathleen Pearce
Kathleen Pearce, 69, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999.
Services are pending with Hampton Vaughan Crestview Chapel.

L.B. Boren Sr.
ARCHER CITY, Texas – L.B. Boren, 79, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, in a Wichita Falls hospital.
Services will be 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church of Archer City with Roger Deerinwater, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Archer City Cemetery under the direction of Aulds Funeral Home.
Mr. Boren was born June 23, 1919, in Walters, Okla. He and Viola Darland were married June 25, 1939, in Grandfield, Okla. She died April 8, 1982. He served in the Army during World War II and retired from Helmerich & Payne Oil Company in 1983 with 25 years of service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. His son, Gary Lee Boren, died March 16, 1998.
Survivors include two sons, L.B. “Buster” Jr. of Archer City and Jimmy “Shug” Boren of Burleson, Texas; two daughters, Aquilla Brake of Burleson and Twilla Howard of Wichita Falls; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Archer City Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 198, Archer City, Texas 76351.

Thelma Rhodes
Thelma Rhodes, 65, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, in a Wichita Falls hospital.
Services will be 10 a.m. today at Welch Street Church of Christ with W.I. Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Eastlawn Cemetery under the direction of Young & Co. Funeral Home.
Mrs. Rhodes was born Feb. 25, 1933, in Marshall, Texas. She was a nurse’s aide at Wichita General Hospital for 31 years and was a member of Welch Street Church of Christ.
Survivors include her mother, Ruth E. Horton, of Wichita Falls; four daughters, Brenda Pope and Linda Woodard, both of Austin, Rose Davis of Wichita Falls and Donna Jefferson of Beaumont, Texas; three sons, Robert Rhodes, Felton Rhodes and Willie Rhodes, all of Wichita Falls; two sisters, Dorothy Mollice and Rosie Brown, both of Wichita Falls; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The family will be at 1700 Avalon.

Pauline Ruth Singleton
IOWA PARK -- Pauline Ruth Shipley Singleton, 89, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, in Iowa Park.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Dutton Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Beckwith, pastor of First Baptist Church of Iowa Park, officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Mrs. Singleton was born Nov. 21, 1909, in Spanish Fort, Texas. She and Elmer Singleton were married Nov. 23, 1924, in Montague County. He died Dec. 13, 1979. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church. She was a member of the Friendly Door Senior Citizens of Iowa Park, was involved in the United Way and was elected Senior Citizen of the Year in 1989. Her son, Oscar Singleton, died in 1992.
Survivors include two daughters, Lila Sims of Iowa Park and Evelyn Hollinsworth of Vernon, Texas; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Friendly Door Senior Citizens in Iowa Park.
The family will be at the funeral home from 7-8 today.

Melvin Ketchum
NOCONA, Texas – Melvin Ketchum, 78, of Henrietta, Texas, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, in Henrietta.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Vallerie Mireb and Torrie Guzzetta officiating. Burial with Masonic graveside rites by Nocona Masonic Lodge No. 753 will be in Ringgold, Texas, Cemetery under the direction Jerry Woods Funeral Home.
Mr. Ketchum was born March 18, 1920, in Montague County, Texas. He and Zada Gladys Ross were married April 12, 1939, in Terral, Okla. He worked for Halliburton and retired in 1985, after 35 years service in Libya, Nigeria, Trinidad, West Indies, Greece, Scotland and Holland. He was a Methodist. He was a member of Nocona Lodge No. 753 AF&AM, Blue Grove Lodge No. 965 AF&AM and endowed member of Henrietta Lodge No. 454 AF&AM. He was also member of Dallas Scottish Rite Bodies, Maskat Shrine Temple, Wichita Valley Scottish Rite Club and the Henrietta O.E.S. Chapter No. 474. His son, Jarrett S. Ketchum, died in 1963.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Sandy Miles of Henrietta and Ann Smith of Abbeyville, LA.; a sister, Maude Hall of Atlanta; a brother, Jarrett Ketchum of Nocona; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Shrine Burn Hospital of Galveston, Texas, or Ringgold Ceemtery Association, P.O. Box 82, Ringgold, Texas, 76261.
The family will be at the funeral home from 6-7 tonight.
Viewing will be from 11:30 a.m. until service time Tuesday at First United Methodist Church.

Collin Ross Sanderson
HENRIETTA, Texas -- Collin Ross Sanderson, infant son of Clay and Kim Sanderson, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, in a Fort Worth hospital.

Collin was born Jan. 7, 1999, in Wichita Falls.
Survivors include his parents; a sister, Brittney of Dean; a brother, Clayton of Dean; and his grandparents, Mike and Barbara Mathews of Dean, and Alice Bloodworth and Michael and Shelah Sanderson, all of Henrietta.

W.C. ‘Bill’ Koonce
BOWIE, Texas -- W.C. “Bill” Koonce, 82, of Bowie died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, in a Borger, Texas, hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church of Bowie with the Rev. Jim Keith, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery under the direction of Burgess-Fry-Owens-Brumley Funeral Home.
Mr. Koonce was born Sept. 23, 1916, in Devils Lake, N.D. He and Dorothy Fisher were married Aug. 13, 1939, in Canadian, Texas. He was a retired owner of Bowie Floral and was a member of First United Methodist Church. He was one of the founding directors of the First Savings and Loan of Bowie and lived in Bowie for 52 years.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Barbara Nichols of Dallas and Phyllis Hall of Bowie; a son, Richard Koonce of Denver; a sister, Irene Minton of El Paso; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Gary Don Pinson
FREDERICK, Okla. – Gary Don Pinson, 45, of Tipton, Okla., died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, in an Altus, Okla., hospital.
Services will be 11 a.m.. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Tipton with the Rev. Troy Taylor and the Rev. Cal Hunter officiating. Burial will be in Tipton Cemetery under the direction of Jackson Funeral Home.
Mr. Pinson was born Dec. 27, 1953, in Tipton. He was a 1972 graduate of Tipton High School and received his bachelor of science degree from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. He later attended Ohio State University in Columbus to work towards his master’s degree. He was associated with Pinson Farms in Tipton and was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
Survivors include his mother, Sharon of Tipton; and a sister, Jill Graumann of Mangum, Okla.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Tipton.

John Doug Morton
CHILDRESS, Texas -- John Doug Morton, 68, of Abilene, Texas, died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Childress Cemetery with the Rev. Johnny Robertson, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Childress, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.
Mr. Morton was born April 10, 1930, in Levelland, Texas. He and Ann Cates were married in 1975 in Hollis, Okla. She died July 18, 1997. From 1971 to 1973, he served at the Central Christian Church of Childress. He then entered the construction business and moved to Abilene in 1990. He worked for Lowe’s Home Improvement.
Survivors include his mother, Auvena of Levelland; a daughter, Johnna Barrentine of Amarillo, Texas; two stepsons, Clifford Ted Cates of Amarillo and Kelvin Cates of Los Angeles; a stepdaughter, Carol Jones of Hereford, Texas; a daughter, Rebecca Pleming of Amarillo, Texas; two sisters, Betty Basye of Levelland and Edith Watson of Leander, Texas; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
