Rabbi Solomon Roodman, who led Anshei Sfard Congregation
from 1946 to the mid-1980s, died yesterday at a nursing home
in Cincinnati. He was 85.
Roodman was a mainstay of Louisville's Jewish community for
decades after World War II, inspecting all kosher butcher shops
and the kosher kitchens at Jewish Hospital, in addition to the
work with his Orthodox congregation.
''He was very liberal in his manner when dealing with people,''
said Bernard Lewis, an attorney who became friends with
Roodman soon after he arrived in Louisville. ''When I grew up
with the rabbis of my time, they were stern and I was afraid of
them -- I couldn't wait to get out. But when he walked in, the
kids ran to him. They loved him.''
And ''if you came to him with a problem, he was very pragmatic
with the problem -- without really deviating from theology,''
Lewis said.
''The most important thing (as a rabbi) is to be a human being,''
Roodman told The Courier Journal in 1976. ''I think people want
images, not critics.''
As a kosher inspector, he had to make sure food preparation
conformed to Orthodox traditions and laws, said Myron Horvitz,
a member of the congregation.
Roodman visited Israel in 1961, where he sat in on part of the trial
of Adolf Eichmann, who directed the deportation of Jews to
concentration camps during World War II.
''The people are bitter,'' Solomon told The Courier-Journal after the
trial ended but before the sentencing. ''They feel that no punishment
can atone for what Eichmann has done.''
Eichmann was executed by hanging.
Roodman was one of the founders of the Louisville Jewish
Day School and was instrumental in raising money for the
Anshei Sfard synagogue that was built on Dutchmans Lane
in the mid-1950s. After his retirement, Roodman served as
rabbi emeritus of the congregation.
A native of Ottawa, Canada, Roodman was a graduate in history
and philosophy from Yeshiva University, and from the Rabbi
Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, both in New York City.
When Roodman arrived in Louisville in 1946, he began a
monthly publication, The Anshei Sfard Reporter, to help people
who could not attend regular synagogue keep in touch. He
also wrote two books that were compilations of his weekly sermons.|
Rabbi Roodman is survived by: one daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Babette)
Fleischer; two sons, Dr. Garson and Robert Roodman; and eight
grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Congregation Anshei Sfard today at
2:00pm with visitation beginning after 1:00pm.
Memorial gifts may be given to either the Jewish Aeleanor Kolitz
Academy of San Antonio, Texas, or to Anshei Sfard Congregation.
