Ken Garon, 61, died on March 5 in Tok, Alaska. Per his request, there was
no service. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee on February 27, 1941. Ken
graduated from the University of Louisville with a MA in History. His thesis
had been a depiction of the inadequacies of the State's case in the bomb and
and blockbusting trial of Carl and Ann Braden.
Ken considered himself a philosopher, and spent virtually his entire life on
what amounts to a single project, or an effort to develop a system of relativ-
istic logic (or logic based in the real world, rather than pure abstraction) as a
supplement to, rather than replacement for, common sense. Ken wrote and
revised several books on this subject, along with his newspaper "The Growl."
His sole true icon was truth, and he pursued it passionately enough that
nothing else got in the way.
Always an outdoorsman, he made his first home in the forests of Indiana, later
becoming a professional photographer. By the late 1960s, even rural Indiana was
too urban, and Ken moved to Alaska, first settling in the country near Ruby. As
a trapper, he spent far more years living far closer to nature than most men still
living; and when he stepped off any highway into the wilderness of Interior
Alaska, he did not feel the least bit threatened or challenged. He felt at home.
Ultimately he did make his home in Tok where he lived until his death.
Ken built and donated the trapper's cabin display in the Fairbanks Alaska Air-
port. He donated his time as a reference librarian at the Louisville Free Public
Library and later in Tok he acted as inter - library book agent and President of
the Tok Community Library. He was currently serving on the Tok Community
Umbrella Board. Ken's unique personality will be missed.
He is survived by his brother, Paul Garon of Chicago, Illinois.
