Arthur Kittower, 88, died January 4, 2005.
Art was an avid tennis player until he was in his mid 80s, when Parkinson's disease took the fun out of it. He loved to walk, deliberately parking some distance away from the office during his many years as a stock and commodities broker in downtown Louisville so that he would be sure to walk several blocks every day.
Although he didn't become a teacher - his goal after getting his bachelor's degree in French from City College of New York - he never lost his delight in learning. After Art retired in 1984, he audited a number of classes at the University of Louisville, everything from philosophy to Chinese history to French and Spanish. He also followed the U of L basketball team with great pleasure.
Art's lack of tolerance for what he bluntly labeled "bull" made him a keen observer of and cogent commentator on politics and world events. He preferred plain language, noting that a 10-cent word always was better than a 25-cent word, and appreciated dry wit. His experience in the Army left him a skeptic of those who rush to war and led him to volunteer for Eugene McCarthy's campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.
He is survived by his wife, Lil; daughter, Diane Kittower (Denny Buck); son, Phil Kittower (Wanda); three grandchildren, Madeleine, Martin and Max; brother, Ken; and niece Martha.
A graveside service will be held today (Friday) at 11:00 a.m. at Adath Jeshurun Cemetery, 2926 Preston Highway.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Louisville, Congregation Adath Jeshurun or to the Lord Dowling Fund for Humane Research, earmarked for research on Parkinson's.
