Edwin L. Cohen, 75, of Louisville, died Thursday.
He practiced law for fifty years with his brother, Louis Cohen, in the firm of Cohen & Cohen Attorneys. He was a graduate of Louisville Male High School and was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was a graduate of the University of Louisville and the Brandies School of Law at the University of Louisville. Twice chess champion of the state of Kentucky, he won his first title at the age of 16. He was also a master bridge player, and an active member of the downtown YMCA.
He is survived by his widow, Helen Cohen; children, Jenny Cohen, Deborah Cohen and Joe Cohen; one grandchild, Hannah Joe; and his brother, Louis Cohen.
Funeral services will be at 11:00am Sunday (today) with burial in the Keneseth Israel Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10:00am Sunday.
Donations may be made to the Kentucky Chess Association, the Louisville Deaf Oral School or Reach Out and Read.

Frank B. Cohen, 79, of Louisville, died Tuesday. He was a retired executive of the US Land Development Company. He directed numerous B'nai Brith and Temple Little Theater productions in Oakland, CA. He was past president of both B'nai Brith and Temple Beth Abraham in Oakland. He was a past board member of the Jewish Federation of East Bay, CA. He was a World War II Army veteran.
He is survived by three sons, Larry A. Cohen (Patti), Martin B. Cohen (Leslie) of Los Angeles, CA and Bradley E. Cohen; sister, Sarilyn Taylor (Roger) of Sanrofael, CA; brother, Ten Cohen (Nancy) of Lincoln, CA; 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10am Friday (today) with burial in The Temple Cemetery, 2916 Preston Highway. Visitation will be after 9am Friday (today).
Expressions of sympathy may be directed to the Jewish Community Center, Temple Shalom or Temple Beth Abraham in Oakland.

Thursday, 5/19/2005 - 10 Iyar 5765
"Buddy" Cohen, 83, of Louisville, died Wednesday.
He was the creator of 'Old Louisville'. His dedication as a realtor created 'Old Louisville' as a national landmark.
He is survived by his daughter, Marcia Cohen Solkin of Sarasota, FL; sons, Thomas Cohen (Sandy) of Los Angeles, CA and Steven Cohen (Deborah) of Houston, TX; loving sister, Jean Steinfield of Fort Lauderdale, FL; and grandchildren, Michelle and Daniel Cohen and their mother Raquel Koff, Hilary and Kourtney Cohen and David Solkin.
The funeral service will be held 3:30 Thursday (today) with burial in Keneseth Israel Cemetery, 719 Locust Lane.
Visitation will begin after 2:30 Thursday.
Expressions of sympathy may be given to Keneseth Israel Congregation.

Pearl Eleanor Smigel, 97, died Monday.
She was active in many charities throughout her lifetime. Most recently she was the Supervisor of Kosher catering in Louisville, Kentucky. She and her husband, Daniel, were the owners of the Smart Dress Shop in Mt. Carmel, Pennsylvania, where they raised their family. She also helped raise a child, Aaron Mendelsohn, in North Carolina. She was a member of Anshei Sfard Congregation.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, Daniel Smigel; their daughter, Adele Smigel; and by her second husband, Irving Shanfield.
She is survived by: two daughters, Frances Winghell of Louisville and Norma Shafer of Phoenix, Arizona; seven grandchildren, Cheryl Hirshc-Ginsberg (Pedro) of Houston, Texas, Craig Winchell (Jennifer) of Sebastopol, California, Ellen Goldman (Michael) of Trumbull, Connecticut, Amy Leibowitz (Glen) of White Plains, New York, Lawrence Shafer (Amy) of Phoenix, Arizona, Adele Shafer and Dina Shafer of San Francisco, California; and 22 great grandchildren.
Interment was at the Tifereth Israel Cemetery in Mt. Carmel, Pennsylvania.

Miriam Benjamin, 88, of Louisville, died Monday.
She worked with her husband at Ben's Family Store in Lexington, KY. She was a former member of Ohavay Zion Synagogue in Lexington.
She was a member of Congregation Adath Jeshurun and a life member of Hadassah.
She is survived by two sons, Ralph Benjamin (Carol) of Dallas, TX and Amos Benjamin (Donna); and grandchildren, Jonathan, Jennifer, Shane, and Tara Benjamin.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday at 1:00 pm at Adath Jeshurun Cemetery.
Expressions of sympathy may be directed to Temple Shalom, Congregation Adath Jeshurun or Hospice & Palliative Care of Louisville.

Thursday, 5/12/2005 - 3 Iyar 5765
Ben Green, 99, formerly of Louisville, died Wednesday in Boston, MA. He was a 1929 graduate of the University of Kentucky. He was a merchant with Lerman Brothers and the former owner of Green's Apparel in Cincinnati, OH and Shelbyville, KY. He was a member of Anshei Sfard Congregation and proud to be a Kentucky Colonel. In 1912, on a return trip from Europe, Ben and his family missed their voyage on the Titanic.
He is survived by a son, Dr. Daniel Green of Boston, MA and daughter, Betty Austen of Woodbridge, CT.
A graveside service will be held on Friday at 1pm at Anshei Sfard Cemetery, 721 Locust Lane.

Friday, 5/6/2005 - 27 Nisan 5765
Benjamin David Osland, 82, of Louisville, died Thursday. He was the owner of Osland's Grocery, an Army veteran of World War II and was a member of Anshei Sfard Congregation.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria Osland; daughters, Elaine Weisberg and Sandra Goldberg of Frederick, MD; four grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 4:00pm today (Friday) at Anshei Sfard Cemetery, 721 Locust Lane.

Hyman (BG) Gurwitch, 93, of Louisville, died Monday morning.
He was a graduate of Louisville Male High School and the Louisville College of Pharmacy. He owned and operated 3rd Avenue Pharmacy for over 50 years. He was a member and past president of Keneseth Israel Congregation. During his tenure, he was instrumental in the relocation of the Congregation from its downtown location to its current location on Taylorsville Road. He was a member of The Temple, St. George Masonic Lodge #239 F&AM, Scottish Rite, Kosair Shrine Temple and Alpha Zeta Omega Pharmaceutical Fraternity.
He and his beloved wife were the oldest members of the Standard Country Club. He was a family man who was a dearly devoted husband, brother and uncle.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Pauline Sandler Gurwitch; sisters, Mildred Weinberg and Bessie Fabian of Rockville, CT; ten nieces and nephews; 25 great nieces and great nephews; and special friends, Shirley and Louise.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00pm today (Wednesday) at Keneseth Israel Cemetery, 719 Locust Lane.

Bryan C. Simmons, 41, died Tuesday, April 19, 2005, at his home. He was an avid bicyclist and had been the owner-operator of several bicycle shops throughout his lifetime. All that knew him recognized his remarkable zeal for life.
Survivors include his mother, Vickie Watterson; sisters, Paula and Alysen Watterson; grandparents, Bill and Virginia Green; and three nieces, Ashley, Lucia and Kara.
Cremation was chosen.

Phyllis R. Grossman, 72, of Louisville, died Monday. She was a breast cancer survivor and active in counseling other survivors. She was a retired treasurer of Spot Distributing and had been active in and a past president of the women's division of her industry's trade association. She was a past board member of The Salvation Army and the Friends of Ostomates. She was a past president of Greathouse Elementary PTA and the chairperson for Jewish Heritage Weekends for five years. She was a member of Congregation Adath Jeshurun, its Sisterhood and the Council of Jewish Women-Louisville Section, a life member of Hadassah and an avid University of Louisville fan and supporter. She is survived by her husband, Stuart Grossman; sons, Larry Grossman (Mary K.), Robert Grossman (Sharla J.) and Jay Grossman of Orlando, FL; a sister, Mara Lai Raab; a brother, Sandy Raab of Los Angeles, CA; and grandchildren, Rebecca, Dorothy, Aaron, Paul, Sam, Sara, Kate, Robyn, Benjamin and Shayna Grossman and Brecklyn Bonham. She was also an "international mother" to numerous exchange students.
Her funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday (today), with burial in Adath Jeshurun Cemetery, 2926 Preston Highway. Visitation will begin at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

Annette Abrams, 82, of Louisville, died Monday.
She was a member of The Temple and National Council of Jewish Women ' Louisville section. Over the years she was the recipient of numerous honors and community awards. For 21 years she was a full time volunteer in blood services with the American Red Cross at both the downtown and east end locations.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Max and Sadie Cohen Kushner and her sister Faye Kushner Tanenhaus.
She is survived by her husband, Elwyn Abrams; a daughter, Lorraine J. Abrams (Stephen Yussman); sons, Lawrence Kushner Abrams (Rosemary) and James Lowell Abrams (Karen Duchan) of New York City; step ' grandchildren, Christine Marie Hill, Eugene Francis Bohn and Sean Bohn; several nieces and nephews; several grand nieces and nephews; and her Red Cross Family.
A funeral service will be held at The Temple, 5101 US Highway 42, at 7:30pm Wednesday night (tonight). Burial will be in The Temple Cemetery at 4:00 pm Wednesday (today).

Irwin Jasphy, 74, of Louisville, died Friday in Caldwell County Hospital. He was a retired manufacturing clerk.
He is survived by a niece, Diane Puckett and nephew, Howard Hoffman.
Burial will be in Brooklyn, New York.

Larisa Lesin, 69, died Saturday evening. She was a speech pathologist and a member of The Temple.
She is survived by her husband, Leonid Lesin; daughter, Inna Makievsky; sister, Isabella Gotlieb; and grandchildren, Vicky Makievsky and Vitaly Makievsky.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Monday (today) at The Temple Cemetery, 2716 Preston Highway at 3:00 p.m.

Morris B. Borowitz, 87, died Friday, April 15, 2005.
Mr. Borowitz received his JD Degree from the University of Louisville in 1940 and served as a staff attorney for the United States Corps of Engineers from 1941-1942. He then served in the US Army during World War II.
In 1946, he began a private law practice which developed into the law firm of Borowitz and Goldsmith, where he served as a senior partner from 1972 to the present.
He was a member of the Louisville, Kentucky, Federal and American bar associations as well as the Kentucky Trial Lawyers Association, Public Relations Committee, Continuing Legal Education Committee. He was a past chairman of the Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee, Public Relations Committee and Legal Services Committee and was a member of numerous other Louisville Bar Association Committees during the past years.
He served as the city attorney for the City of Indian Hills, Cherokee Section, from 1957-1982 and was appointed as its city attorney emeritus from 1982 to the present. Mr. Borowitz was a charter member, trustee and past president of the University of Louisville Law Alumni Foundation, a trustee and past president of the University of Louisville Law Alumni Association and past president of the University of Louisville Alumni Association.
He served as a co-chairman of the University of Louisville Law Alumni Library Campaign, raising over $125,000. He was also a chairman for a number of telephone fund raising campaigns for the University of Louisville School of Law during the past 20 years, as well as a team captain in years in which he did not chair the campaigns. He also served as a fund raising chairman of mid-size law firms for the Legal Aid Society in 1988.
Mr. Borowitz was the recipient of the 1979 Outstanding Service Award and the 1981 Distinguished Alumni Award, both presented by the University of Louisville School of Law. He lectured at various seminars and at the University of Louisville School of Law and served on the governor's committee in drafting the Kentucky Purchasing Code.
He was an organizer of the Adopted Alumni Program of the University of Louisville Alumni Association and received the Grauman Award from the Alumni Association in 1988. He served as a special justice to the Supreme Court of Kentucky in 1984 and was an overseer of the University of Louisville from 1988-1991.
Mr. Borowitz was a trustee and past president of the Louisville Hebrew School and a member and past president of Louisville Lodge #14 of B'nai Brith. He was a member and former trustee of Congregation Adath Jeshurun and a member of the American Jewish Committee, St. George Masonic Lodge, Kosair Temple and Scottish Rite, having been conferred a Knight Commander of the court of Honor (KCCH). He was also a member of the Executives Club of Louisville and had been a vice chairman of the Louisville Conference of Christians and Jews Dinner of four years.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian; three daughters, Joyce Lichtenstein and Lainie Monsef (Charlie), all of San Francisco, California, and BB Borowitz of Oakland, California; two grandchildren, Reid Meyers (Todd) of Sunnyvale, California, and Brenna Monsef of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; great-grandchildren, Bella Rose Myers and Jacob Todd Myers; a brother, Joseph Borowitz (Babe) of Chicago, Illinois; and loving nieces, Sharon Marx (Gerald), Janet Levitan (Alan) and Gail Sidney of Los Angeles, California.
His funeral will be held Sunday (today) at 1:30 p.m. with visitation after 12:00 noon. Burial will be in the Adath Jeshurun Cemetery, 2926 Preston Highway.
Memorial donations may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
