Herbert Silon, 71, died Wednesday, September 20, 2006.
He was a graduate from Johns Hopkins University and an industrial engineer with Dupont Chemical for 40 years. He was a member of Congregation Adath Jeshurun, the Jewish Community Center and Friends for Hope. He was co-chairman of the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School, an active volunteer for Boy Scouts, a volunteer with the Tax Aid Program and president of the Silon Family Circle Group.
Herb was an inspiration to others battling pancreatic cancer.
Herb is survived by: his wife, Ruth Goldberg Silon; daughters, Eileen Silon of Morro Bay, California, Sherry Strodel of Newport, California and Deborah Henderson (Keith) of Simpsonville, KY; son, Leonard Silon (Cyndy) of Olathe, KS; brothers, Nat Silon (Barbara) of Ponte Vedra, Florida and Mel Silon of Atlanta, Georgia; and 5 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11AM Friday (today) at the funeral home, with burial in Adath Jeshurun Cemetery, 2926 Preston Highway. Visitation will begin after 10AM Friday.

Neil "Buddy" Schwartz,, 71 died Thursday, September 7, 2006.
He was born and raised in Louisville and attended high school in Toledo, OH. He was a graduate of Ohio State University and a member of Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity.
Buddy entered the life insurance business in 1956, expanding into property and casualty when he co-founded Schwartz & Speckter Insurance Agency in 1959. He was founder and Chairman of Schwartz & Associates, Inc., an independent insurance agency in its second generation, which is currently celebrating his 50th year of service to the community. Over the years, Buddy earned a variety of industry accolades and served advisory roles with numerous companies including Aetna, CNA as Chairman of Pacer, Fireman's Fund, Illinois Mutual, Monroe Guarantee, Motorist Mutual, Principal Financial Group, Shand Morahan among others. His many industry accomplishments included writing the first $1,000,000 life policy for Illinois Mutual and acting as one of the early innovators of self-funded medical insurance.
Buddy was a long-time member of The Temple, Standard Country Club and Kosair Shrine. He served on the Board of Directors of Jewish Hospital and Republic Bank & Trust Company, was active in the Jewish Federation of Louisville and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was an avid golfer who still carried his clubs and worked out almost every day. He was actively enjoying every aspect of his life and will be fondly remembered for his quick smile, genuine caring, competitive spirit and "young at heart" attitude.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nettie Y. and Sol P. Schwartz.
Survivors include: his sons, Matt (Cindy), Scott (Kim), both of Louisville and Dr. Jeff (Dr. Robin) of Pensacola, FL; his wife, Eleanor and her sons, Scott Butler (Jane) of Atlanta, GA and Andy Butler (Nancy Kriegel) of Boston, MA; sisters, Jean Trager (Bernard) of Louisville and Susie Cohen of Danville, CA; grandchildren, Bradley, Carly, Chelsea, Bentlea, Carter, Gavin, Noah, Jennifer, Amy, Emily, Rachel, Jonah and Aaron; four nieces and nephews; and a wide, caring circle of cousins, friends, associates and clients.
Funeral services will be held at The Temple, 5101 US Highway 42, at 4:30 p.m., Sunday (today), with burial in The Temple Cemetery. Visitation will begin after 3:00 p.m. Sunday.

Beverly Merenbloom, died Tuesday in Texas.
She was a member of: The Temple and its board of trustees, Hazamir Choir, Women of Reformed Judaism, a life member of the National Council of Jewish Women ' Louisville section and a graduate of the Melton Mini School.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Paul Merenbloom; a son, Jonathan; 2 sisters, Debra Braverman of Richmond, Virginia and Jill Roth of Indianapolis, Indiana; brother-in-law, Bruce Merenbloom of Raleigh, North Carolina; sister-in-law, Betsy Jane Merenbloom of Raleigh, North Carolina; several nieces and nephews; and many friends who loved her.
Her funeral service will be held on Friday (today), at 2pm, at the funeral home, with burial in The Temple Cemetery, 2716 Preston Highway. Visitation will begin after 1pm Friday.

Catherine June Snyder, died Tuesday at Jefferson Manor. She was a member of The Temple.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Snyder.
Survivors included her two sons, Randall Snyder and Marvin Snyder Jr.; 2 grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild.
A graveside service will be held in The Temple Cemetery.

David Bailen, 88 died Thursday at his residence.
He was the owner of David Bailen's at Speed and Bardstown Rd. for many years. He was a member of The Temple and The Temple Mens Club, a scuba diver, instructor at The Jewish Community Center, a volunteer at Jewish Hospital and The Kentucky Center of The Arts. He was Also a Docent Emeritus at The Louisville Zoo and active in Heritage Theater.
He is survived by his wife Shirley Bailen; sons Dr. James (Sandy) Bailen and Barry Bailen of Olympia, WA; and four grandchildren, Molly (Greg) Maloof, Michael and Neal Bailen and Dr. Erica Bailen.
Funeral services Sunday at 2:00 p.m. with burial in Adath Jeshurun Cemetery. Visitation at the funeral home after 1 p.m. Sunday.

Jean Rae Ellenberg, 84 (nee Flexner) of Louisville died Friday August 25th 2006, at Jefferson Manor. She was a retired homemaker who never loss the knack for creating memorable, simple meals, an avid bridge player and a devoted friend to many.
She was proceeded in death by her husband William Ellenberg and her parents Gus and Ruth Flexner. She is survived by her son, Richard (Mindy) Siegel; daughter, Judy (Joe) Becker of Titusville, FL; sister Dorothy Speier; six grandchildren, Jami and Kelli Siegel, Glen (Brooke) Siegel, Elise Becker, Nathan (Crystal) Becker and Benjamin Becker; two great grandchildren, Deven and Emma Becker; and two nephews, Ron (Sharon) Speier and Kevin Katz.
The family offers special thanks to the devoted and caring staff of Jefferson Manor.

David Johnson, 50 of Louisville died Tuesday August 22, 2006 at his residence.
He was a former correction officer for the Jefferson County Department of Corrections. He was a member of Congregation Anshei Sfard.
He is survived by his father, Jerry Johnson; brother, Mark Johnson; aunt, Rita Orphanos of Bronx, New York; and a dear friend, Pat Pritchett.
Graveside services will be held at 4 p m. Wednesday at Anshei Sfard Cemetery.

Louis A. Herman, 95, died Friday, August 18, 2006 at Norton Suburban Hospital.
He was the retired owner of Herman's on Market Street. He was member of Congregation Adath Jeshurun and a former board member for several years. He was a former member of the Jewish Community Center where he was active in racquetball tournaments, the Heritage Theater and served as a volunteer coach for the little league program.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Ada Coleman.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 69 years, Rosalee Schulman Herman; daughter, Nancy Blodgett; son, Dr. Gary D. Herman (Terry); a brother, Dr. Morton Herman (Arlene) of Boyton Beach, FL; four grandchildren, Kim Franklin (Scott), Jennifer Halverson (Erik), Jill Herman and Lindsey Grossman (David); a great grandson, West Franklin; and many nieces and nephews.

He was the former owner of Edward's Discount Center on 4th Street.
His son, Michael Shomer preceded him in death.

Frank D. Berlin, 88, of Louisville, died Saturday, July 29, 2006 of complications from pneumonia at Norton's Suburban Hospital.
He was a native of Hodgenville, Kentucky, and grew up in New Albany, Indiana. He owned and operated Berlin & Son Department Store in Louisville from 1946-1975. Subsequently, he operated another Berlin's Clothing Store in Corydon, Indiana, for 10 years until his retirement in 1985. He had been a board member of of Keneseth Israel Synagogue, an officer of the local S.C.O.R.E. chapter, and a member of Rotary International.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Frieda Rieser Berlin; his son, Mark (Leslie) of Potomac, Maryland; his daughter, JoAnne (Richard) Sloss of Mill Valley, California; and two grandsons, Justin Berlin and Brian Sloss.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday (today) at the funeral home. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Monday. Burial will be at Keneseth Israel Cemetery, 719 Locust Lane.

Louis Kanalstein, 86, of Louisville, died Saturday, July 22, 2006.
He was a former resident of Staten Island, NY, and Margate, FL. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II, and a member of Jewish War Veterans, and Knights of Pythias.
His wife, Judith, predeceased him.
He is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Paterno (Philip) of Harriman, New York, and Susan Gay (Pat); sister, Ann Naiman; and four grandchildren, Jackie and Jon Owens, and Justin and Lauren Paterno. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday (today) at the funeral home, followed by burial in Cave Hill Cemetery- Temple Shalom section.

Miriam Starr Mayer, 96, died Wednesday, July 19, 2006.
Miriam was a member of The Temple and National Council of Jewish Women ' Louisville section. She was a volunteer at Jewish Hospital for over 20 years and was still doing her volunteer work shortly before she died.
She is survived by her children: Allan A. Mayer (Kathy), Marvin S. Mayer (Iris) and Barbara M. Chong (Cedric); 7 grandchildren, Verneisa Moore, David Mayer, Martin Mayer, Cedric Chong, James Chong, Michael Chong and Robert Chong; and 15 great grandchildren.
Her funeral will be at 12 noon Monday (today) at the funeral home, with interment
