MOBILE COUNTY
Vera Parker East
Vera Parker East, a homemaker and longtime resident of Chickasaw, died Thursday in Mobile.
Mrs. East, 85, was a Tuscaloosa native.
Survivors include one daughter, Sylvia E. Alford of Chickasaw; three brothers, Hester Parker of Sacramento, Calif., Brady Parker of Atlanta and H.E. Parker of Monticello, Miss.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are set for noon Saturday in Mobile Memorial Gardens, with Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street in charge.
Andrew J. Mathis
Andrew Jackson Mathis, an Army veteran of World War II, died June 9 at his home. He was 79.
Mathis was a native of Mobile and resident of Chickasaw. He served in the Army for seven years.
Survivors include his nephew, Alvin Mathis; and a niece, Sarah Shelton, both of Hawkinsville, Ga.
Private military services will take place today in Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola. Gilmer's Funeral Service handled arrangements.
Jewel P. Burgess
Jewel P. Burgess, a resident of Chickasaw since 1996 and former resident of Texas, died Wednesday at a local hospital. She was 89.
Mrs. Burgess was a native of Milam, Texas, and was a former longtime resident of Arlington, Texas. She had been a member of Sandy Creek Church of Christ in Milam County, Texas.
Survivors include her husband, Claude C. Burgess of Chickasaw; one daughter, Carolyn J. McDonald of Chickasaw; one son, Kenneth W. Burgess of Arlington; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Private graveside services are scheduled today in Mobile Memorial Gardens, with Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home directing.

Imogene Cook
Imogene Cook, a retired packing technician with Scott Paper, died Monday in Turnerville, Ala. She was 54.
Mrs. Cook, a native of Leakesville, Miss., was a resident of Satsuma.
Survivors include her husband, Will Tom Cook Sr. of Satsuma; her mother, Elma Lou Dueitt of Citronelle; two daughters, Cynthia J. Pittman of Citronelle and Glenda W. Rivers of Deer Park, Ala.; one stepson, Will Tom Cook Jr. of Mobile; four brothers, Crawford Dueitt and Tom Dueitt, both of Palmdale, Calif., Orville "Bit" Dueitt of Leakesville and Roy Dueitt of Daphne; four sisters, Bonnie Dixon of Leakesville, Netta Johnson and Amy Jo Davis, both of Citronelle, and Freida Savage of Mojave, Calif.; three grandchildren; and seven stepgrandchildren.
Services are set for 11 a.m. today at Freeman Funeral Home in Leakesville, with burial in Mount Pisgah Cemetery.

Levern Joseph Young
ROBERTSDALE — Levern Joseph Young, a retired member of Plumbers and Steam Fitters Local No. 119 of Mobile, died Wednesday at the age of 77.
Young, a resident of Robertsdale, was an Army veteran of World War II.
A master Mason, he was a member of St. Stephens Masonic Lodge No. 81 in St. Stephens, Ala.
Survivors include his wife, Agnes K. Young of Robertsdale; one son, Michael W. Young of King Salmon, Alaska; four brothers, Emanuel Young of Satsuma, Elton Young of Saraland, Martin Young of Hurley, Miss., and John Young of Mobile; five sisters, Eunice LaGrave of Mobile, Mary Armenia Lawson of Grove Hill, Ala., Etta Saxton of Gautier, Miss., Hattie Robinson of Victoria, Texas, and Mary Maki of Pascagoula; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson, Ala., with services at 11 a.m. Saturday, followed by Masonic graveside services in Clearwater Cemetery in Wagarville, Ala.
Callie Mae Anderson
STOCKTON — Callie Mae Anderson, a resident of Stockton and member of Zion Fountain AME Zion Church, died Sunday in a Mobile hospital. She was 72.
Mrs. Anderson, a native of Monroe County, formerly worked as a machinist.
Survivors include her husband, Willis Anderson; three daughters, Eleanor Lamar of Stockton, Mary James of Chicago and Celestine White of Mobile; three sons, Willie James Anderson and Joe Anderson, both of Chicago, and Charles Anderson of Jacksonville, Fla.; six sisters, Leazor Lawson and Elizabeth Stevens, both of Stockton, Catherine Rocker of Mobile, Lucy Kennedy and Arthurine Williams, both of Chicago, and Geraldine McGrue of Daphne; four brothers, Nathan Williams of Gulfport, Louis Williams Jr. of Chicago, Rosco Williams of Mobile and Samuel Williams of Lathan, Ala.
Services are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion Fountain AME Zion Church, with viewing one hour before. Burial will be in Robinson Cemetery in Stockton, with Baldwin Community Chapel Funeral Home in Bay Minette in charge of arrangements.

Mattie McElroy Allen
HALSELL, Ala. — Mattie McElroy Allen, a homemaker, died Wednesday at a hospital in Meridian, Miss. She was 85.
The Alabama native was a resident of the Halsell community near Lisman, Ala.
Survivors include her son, Gerald Allen of Halsell; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are set for 2 p.m. Saturday in Shearon Cemetery in Halsell, with Bumpers Funeral Home in Butler, Ala., in charge of arrangements.
CLARKE COUNTY
Brent K. Chapman
GROVE HILL — Brent Kentrell Chapman, an employee of Kellog, Brown and Root Construction Co., died Saturday from injuries sustained in a traffic accident. He was 23.
Chapman, a native and resident of Grove Hill, was a 1995 graduate of Clarke County High School.
He was a member of Pine Chapel No. 1 Baptist Church of Grove Hill and Utopia Masonic Lodge No. 251.
Survivors include his parents, Thomas and Mary Ann Chapman of Grove Hill; three sisters, Valorie Davis of Acworth, Ga., Elitha Shenese Chapman and Valitha Chapman, both of Grove Hill; three brothers, Derek Chapman, Tracy Chapman and Aaron Chapman, all of Grove Hill.
Viewing will be at noon today, with services at 1 p.m. at Mount Zion No. 2 Baptist Church in Grove Hill. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery.
ESCAMBIA COUNTY
Margarett Tucker
ATMORE — Margarett Tucker, a homemaker and member of Mount Olive Baptist Church of Robinsonville, Ala., died Monday at an area hospital. She was 74.
Mrs. Tucker, a native of Wilcox County, had lived most of her life in Atmore.
Survivors include five daughters, Eloise Lambert, Anita Cooks, Margaret Ann Bradley, Evie Thomas and Lena Tucker, all of Atmore; six sons, Leo Tucker Jr. of College Park, Ga., Willie James Bufford of St. Louis, Mo., Billy Tucker of Cleveland, Ohio, Jackie L. Tucker and Henry Tucker, both of Atmore and Albert Tucker of Atlanta; her adopted son, Adrian Tucker of Atmore; 56 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be begin at 1 p.m. today at Turner Funeral Chapel in Atmore, with visitation from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Services are set for 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Robinsonville, with burial in Stallworth Cemetery.

Lillie Gaye Dickey
CHATOM — Lillie Gaye Dickey, who had worked as a secretary with Carpenter & Dickey Lumber Co., died Monday at her home. She was 70.
Mrs. Dickey, an Alabama native, was a resident of Chatom and a member of Chatom United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Carol Dickey Bumpers of Chatom; her mother, Lillie Sullivan Smith of Chatom; three brothers, John L. Smith Jr. of Mobile, Robert G. Smith of Wagarville, Ala., and Gerald N. Smith of Tampa, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
Services took place Thursday at Chatom United Methodist Church, with burial in Chatom Cemetery. Lathan Funeral Home of Chatom handled arrangements.

Bertha Stokley Smith
WAYNESBORO, Miss. — Bertha Stokley Smith, a homemaker and a former Mobile resident, died Thursday at a nursing facility. She was 94.
Survivors include two sons, Herman Stokley of Mobile and Milton Stokley of Baton Rouge, La.; two daughters, Christine Phillips of Mobile and Betty Mauldin of Baker, La.; one brother, Creel Rigney of Buckatunna, Miss.; six sisters, Maggie Bradford, Louise Cochran, Polly Rester and Naomi Insand, all of Mobile, Velma McRae of Copeland, Ala., and Dorothy Mae Coley of Lynchburg, Va.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today at Freeman Funeral Home in Waynesboro, with services at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Providence Cemetery.

Edward L. Cross
Edward L. Cross, who had served as a band director at various high schools and colleges in the South and Southwest, died Friday in Chickasaw. He was 86.
The Chickasaw resident was a native of Minden, La. He was a 1929 graduate of Minden High School, where he had played in the band.
He attended Normal College, now Northwestern State University of Louisiana in Natchitoches. He received his master's degree in music from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
Cross was a veteran of World War II, having served from 1942 to 1946.
Survivors include two stepsons, Lonnie P. Jarrell of Fort Worth, Texas, and William D. Jarrell of Chickasaw; and two sisters, Oma Cross Langston of Minden and Novilla Cross Zerangue of Pineville, La.
Visitation will be at Radney Funeral Home in Saraland from 5 to 8 this evening. Services and burial will take place in Minden.
Claude J. Edwards
Claude James Edwards, a retired electronics technician supervisor at Pensacola Naval Air Station, died Wednesday at the age of 74.
Edwards, a native of Chickasaw, was a resident of Prichard.
He was an agent for the Booker T. Washington Insurance Co. Mobile District No. 17.
Edwards had attended Ella Grant Mobile County Training School and Alabama A&M University.
He was a member Pine Grove AME Church.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby S. Edwards of Prichard; one son, Robert L. Edwards of Prichard; a brother, Henry B. Edwards of New Orleans; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at Pine Grove AME Church on Thursday from 9 a.m. until the noon services. Burial will be in Whispering Pines Cemetery with Hodge's Funeral Chapel directing.
Barbara Head Morris
Barbara Head Morris, a lifelong resident of Mobile, died Friday in a local hospital. She was 77.
She is survived by three sons, Walter Morris and Kenneth Morris of Mobile and Robert Morris of Atlanta; a sister, Helen Croft of Evergreen; two grandchildren; and other relatives.
Memorials may be made to Government Street United Methodist Church or the charity of the mourner's choice.
Pine Crest Funeral Home on Dauphin Island Parkway is in charge of arrangements.
Madge Lee Young
Madge Lee Young, a native of Deer Park, Ala., and resident of Wilmer, died Thursday in a local hospital. She was 71.
Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Young of Wilmer; three sons, Willard Kenneth Lee Young and Lawrence Samuel Young, both of Chunchula, and Thomas Paul Young of Wilmer; her mother, Minnie Lee Curry of Chickasaw; two brothers, Woodrow Curry of Chickasaw and Edgar M. Curry of Wilmer; four sisters, Vera Matheny of Eight Mile, Freda Hammons, Janice Andrews and Fredna E. Waite, all of Chickasaw; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Valhalla Memorial Funeral Home in Semmes with burial in Valhalla Memorial Cemetery.

William Howard Jr.
BAY MINETTE - William Mason Howard Jr., who worked as a job setter with Ford Motor Co., died Thursday at his home. He was 68.
Howard, a native of Carthage, Ind., was a resident of the Pine Grove community of Bay Minette.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Frances D. Jewell Howard of Bay Minette; two sons, William M. "Dusty" Howard III of Bay Minette and Rick D. Howard of Rushville, Ind.; a daughter, Billie J. Lucas of Lithia, Fla.; a brother, Lester O. Howard of Virginia; a sister, Deloris Newbold of Cumberland, Ind.; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Graveside services are scheduled for 3 p.m. today at Pine Grove Cemetery with military honors rendered by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 49 of Mobile. Norris Funeral Home of Bay Minette is in charge of arrangements.

SPANISH FORT - Nettie Mae Langham, a homemaker and resident of Bay Minette, died Thursday at a local health care facility.
Mrs. Langham, 90, was a native of Spanish Fort.
Survivors include two sons, Elmer Hiram Langham of White House Fork and Glen Langham of Maryville, Tenn.; two daughters, Dorothy Davis of Bay Minette and Doris Jarrel of Atmore, Ala.; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Services are set for 11 a.m. today at Norris Funeral Home in Bay Minette with burial in Bay Minette Cemetery.
Bessie Pleasant
BAY MINETTE - Bessie Pleasant, a member of McGhee Temple Church, died Wednesday at a local health care facility. She was 88.
Mrs. Pleasant was a native of Monroeville, Ala., and a resident of Bay Minette.
Survivors include two sons, Leonard Pleasant of Prairie, Texas, and Edward E. Pleasant Jr. of Detroit; a sister, Leila Robinson of Bay Minette; a brother, Greeley Edwards of Bay Minette; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be from noon to 4 p.m. Monday at Christian Benevolent Funeral Home in Mobile and after 5 p.m. at McGhee Temple Church on West Hurricane Road in Bay Minette, with visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with burial in Sun Rise Memorial Cemetery.
