MOBILE COUNTY

Vera DeWitt
Vera Lillian Williams DeWitt, who had worked as a cashier at a local grocery store, died June 23 at a local hospital. She was 90.
Mrs. DeWitt was a native of Texas and a resident of Theodore, where she was a member of Theodore First Baptist Church.
Among her survivors is a sister, Loren Hooper of Houston.
Services took place Saturday. Burial was in Mobile Memorial Gardens.

Samuel Martin Sr.
Samuel Martin Sr., who had worked for 35 years with Alcoa Aluminum Co., died Wednesday at a medical facility in Daphne. He was 89.
A native of Marion, Ala., Martin was a resident of Mobile since the 1930s.
He was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church for more that 60 years and had served as chairman of the deacon board, a youth counselor and member of the laymen's association.
He was also a Mason.
Survivors include 12 children, Samuel Martin Jr. of Columbus, Ga., Delores Martin McDuffie, Tommie Martin, Mary Mabins, Cleophus Martin, Clara Thornton, Robert Martin, Marie Carter, Linda Martin and Joyce Martin, all of Mobile, Alonzo Martin of Canton, Ohio, and Sherrie Kelly of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, Joel Martin of North Chicago, Ill.; 36 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Arrangements will be announced by Reese Funeral Home.

Mary E. Presnall
Mary Estelle Presnall, a member of Parkway Evangelical Church and lifelong resident of Whistler, died Tuesday at a local hospital. She was 93.
Mrs. Presnall had taught Sunday school at her church for more than 60 years.
She enjoyed quilting and crocheting.
Survivors include a daughter, Lucille Presnall Smith of Saraland; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at noon Friday at Radney Funeral Home in Saraland, followed by services at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Whistler Cemetery.

BALDWIN COUNTY

Lucille D. Clarke
DAPHNE — Lucille Davison Clarke, who had worked for many years as a licensed practical nurse at Mobile Infirmary, died Wednesday at a Fairhope hospital. She was 83.
Mrs. Clarke, a native and longtime former resident of Mobile, had lived in Montrose for the past two years. She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Daphne.
She was past president of the Alabama Nursing Association.
Survivors include two sisters, Elouise Prince of Fairhope and Wilhelmina Nelson of Birmingham.
Gravesides services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday in Pine Crest Cemetery, with Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street in charge of arrangements.

Clara E. McNaughton
MONTROSE — Clara E. McNaughton, a native of Greenville, Ala., and resident of Montrose for past few years, died Wednesday at hospital in Fairhope. She was 91.
Survivors include four children, Clifford B. McNaughton and Ora McNaughton Cone, both of Spanish Fort, and W. Alvin McNaughton and L. Herston McNaughton, both of Greenville; two sisters Johnnie Lee Smith of Greenville and Ora Mae Miller of Pensacola; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Dunklin-Herndon Funeral Home in Greenville, where services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Shackleville Cemetery.

CLARKE COUNTY

Thearon Gibson
COFFEEVILLE — Thearon "Blue" Gibson, who had worked as a welder, died Tuesday at a hospital in Grove Hill, Ala. He was 68.
Gibson, a veteran, was an Alabama native and a resident of Coffeeville.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Cummings Gibson of Coffeeville; four sons, Glen Gibson of Bay St. Louis, Miss., Jimmy Gibson of Chalmette, La., James Gibson of Independence, La., and Danny Gibson of Parchman, Miss.; a daughter, Deborah Thornton of Butler, Ala.; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Bumpers Funeral Home in Butler. Graveside services are set for 10 a.m. Friday in Shady Grove Cemetery in Butler.

Lottie M. Wainwright
PENSACOLA — Lottie Mae Wainwright, a native of Brewton, Ala., and resident of Pensacola, died Tuesday.
Mrs. Wainwright, 94, was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Edmond S. Ridgway of Pensacola; three daughters, Lillian Smith of Pensacola, Irma Jean Baker of McDavid, Fla., and Bobbie Jean Davis of Davisville, Fla.; 18 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and 31 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8 this evening at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home in Atmore, Ala., where services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Macon Hataway
FAIRHOPE — Macon Hataway, a native of Opp and a resident of Fairhope for 44 years, died Monday, June 29, 1999, at a local nursing facility. He was 84 years old.
Hataway was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fairhope.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years Mary H. Hataway of Fairhope; a son, Larry Hataway of Peoria, Ariz.; five daughters, Bonnie J. Bishop, Etta Word and Faye Hataway Bishop, all of Fairhope, Bobbie H. Grosskopf of New Canaan, Conn., and Brenda Hataway of Naperville, Ill.; 19 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Graveside funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday in Memory Gardens of Fairhope, with Franklin Smart officiating.
Arrangements are by Wolfe Funeral Home in Fairhope.

Mildred McMichael Yohn
FOLEY — Mildred McMichael Yohn of Foley, a native of Ozark, died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, at a local health-care facility. She was 92 years old.
Mrs. Yohn is survived by a daughter, Norma Gene Allen of Magnolia Springs; a son, Walter M. Yohn Sr. of Foley; a brother, Charlie McMichael of Maine; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Funeral services will held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Bayview Funeral Home in Fairhope, with the Rev. James Hill officiating.
Burial will be in Memory Gardens in Fairhope. Arrangements are by Bayview Funeral Home.

Betty L. Harbin
Betty L. Harbin, a native of Birmingham and resident of Saraland since 1967, died Wednesday at a local nursing facility. She was 68.
Survivors include a daughter, Angie Adams of Saraland; a son, Paul W. Harbin of Saraland; two stepdaughters, Debbie Harbin and Wanda Terry, both of Satsuma; two sisters, Beatrice Green of Fairhope and Ellen Evans of Andalusia, Ala.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. today at Radney Funeral Home in Saraland , with graveside services at noon in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Clayton R. McVay
Clayton R. McVay, a retired federal employee, died Wednesday at a local hospital.
McVay, a native of McVay, Ala., was a longtime resident of Mobile.
He had been a federal employee from 1939 to 1969, assigned to Maxwell Air Force Base, Fort McClellan, Brookley Air Force Base, Middleton, Pa., and Warner Robins, Ga.
A veteran, he served from 1943 to 1946. He received the Service Ribbon for Vietnam as a civilian from the Air Force Chief of Staff, commander of the 7th Air Force. Other commendations included the China Liberation Medal; China-Burma-India Service Ribbon; World War II Victory Medal; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon; the Presidential Unit Citation with a cluster; and the Good Conduct Ribbon.
He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Mobile, the Air Force Association, National Association of Federal Retirees, Air Force Sergeant Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans Association.
Survivors include his wife, Irene West McVay of Mobile; and a sister, Dell Burns of Gulf Shores.
Services are set for 2 p.m. today in the Chapel of the Pines Mausoleum in Pine Crest Cemetery, with entombment to follow. Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street is handling arrangements.

George Rice
George Rice, who had worked for roofing company, died Saturday at his residence. He was 74.
Rice was a native of Uriah, Ala., and a longtime resident of Mobile.
Among his survivors is a godchild who served as his caregiver, Delores Parker.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Lovett's Funeral Chapel, and at 11 a.m. Saturday, follwed by services at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Rising Sons Cemetery.

BALDWIN COUNTY

Artelia M. Watts
DAPHNE — Artelia Maxine Watts, a native and resident of Daphne, died Wednesday at her home. She was 69.
Ms. Watts, who had resided in Chicago and Breham, Texas, was a member of the Shrine of the Holy Cross and was a U.S. Army veteran.
She is survived by one sister, Aurie Pennick of Grayslake, Ill.; and three aunts, Velma Calhoun, Victoria Dates and Helen Bryant of Daphne.
Viewing will be from noon to 5 p.m. today at Christian Benevolent Funeral Home, and after 9 a.m. Saturday at Shrine of the Holy Cross in Daphne. Visitation and the rosary will be at 10 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Little Bethel Cemetery in Daphne.

CHOCTAW COUNTY

Orlandus B Gilbert Jr.
GILBERTOWN — Orlandus Blaine Gilbert Jr., a retired oilfield hand with Justice & Myers Drilling, died Thursday at a hospital in Meridian, Miss. He was 76.
Gilbert, a resident of Gilbertown, was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include three sisters, Vada G. Doggett and Nalda G. Cooper, both of Gilbertown, and Josephine G. Flanagan of Meridian.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Phillips Funeral Home in Gilbertown, were services are set for 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Gilbertown Cemetery.

CLARKE COUNTY

Ollie Mae Chapman
WINN — Ollie Mae Chapman, homemaker and member of Mount Zion No. 2 Baptist Church of Grove Hill, Ala., died Wednesday at her home. She was 85.
Mrs. Chapman was a native and resident of Winn.
Survivors include a son, the Rev. Vayton Chapman of Coffeeville, Ala.; three daughters, Carrie Pearl Pugh of Mount Vernon, and Blondie Mae Chapman and Lillian Chapman, both of Winn; three sisters, Jessie Dickinson, Clara Bell Pugh and Emma Lee Todd, all of Grove Hill; a brother, Bernard Martin of Chicago; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at noon Saturday at Mount Zion No. 2 Baptist Church, followed by services at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery. Arrangements are with Andrews Funeral Home in Jackson, Ala.

Cora C. Smith
THOMASVILLE — Cora Cornelia Smith, a homemaker and member of Elam Baptist Church, died Wednesday at an area nursing facility. She was 78.
Mrs. Smith, affectionately known to family and friends as "Tiny," was an Alabama native.
Survivors include three sons, James Newton, Herbert Newton and Mike Newton, all of Thomasville; six sisters, Marjorie Walker of Axis, Ala., Gertrude Lyles of Bashi, Ala., Bernice Gates and Syble Harrison, both of Saraland, Catherine Smith of Bay Minette and Joann Gann of Selma; two brothers, Jim Harrison of Mobile and John Harrison of Bashi; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at O'Bryant Chapel Funeral Home in Thomasville, where services are set for 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Elam Baptist Church Cemetery in Thomasville.

MONROE COUNTY

Merle T. Wiggins
MONROEVILLE — Merle Taylor Wiggins, a homemaker and member of Mexia Baptist Church, died Wednesday at a Mobile hospital. She was 95.
Mrs. Wiggins, a native of Old Salem, Ala., was a resident of Monroeville.
Survivors include five sons, Alphis M. Wiggins, Charles H. Wiggins and Jesse L. Wiggins, all of Mexia, Ala., Hildred "Hick" Wiggins of Uriah, Ala., and Larry Douglas Wiggins of Castleberry, Ala.; two sisters, Lilly Scarobrough of Mexia and Louise Rowell Addison of Frisco City, Ala.; a sister, Mary Nettles of Monroeville; 24 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Services are set for 11 a.m. today at Mexia Baptist Church, with burial in Mexia Cemetery. Monroe Chapel Funeral Home of Monroeville is in charge of arrangements.

Adrienne R. Newton
HAVELOCK, N.C. — Adrienne Renee Newton, a native of Tacoma, Wash., and resident of Havelock, died Wednesday at a hospital in New Bern, N.C. She was 6.
She is survived by her father, Doug Newton of Havelock; her mother, Jenifer Newton of Havelock; grandparents, Peggy Ferry, Johnny Ferry, Wilma Newton and Jimmy Newton, all of Butler, Ala.; great-grandparents, Irene Ferry of Butler, Ala., Garland Newton of Fulton, Ala., and William L. Washington of Lavaca, Ala.; and great-great-grandparents, Bertie M. Brown of Butler and Osie Lee Smith of Bastrop, La.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at Bumpers Funeral Home in Butler. Services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the First Assembly of God in Butler. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Butler.

Georgia M. Sargent
GULFPORT — Georgia Marie Sargent, a native of Chunchula and resident of Gulfport, died Saturday at a local hospital.
Mrs. Sargent, 49, was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Simon Sargent of Gulfport; a daughter, Eglacia Sargent of Gulfport; two sons, Marcus Sargent and Tyrant Sargent, both of Gulfport; three sisters, Elouise Brannon of Maryland, Darlean Bryant of Mobile and Mary Lucy of Chunchula; four brothers, Larry Gable, Darryl Gable and John Gable, all of Chunchula, and Jeffery Gable of Prichard; and seven grandchildren.
Visitation will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Starlight Baptist Church in Chunchula, followed by services at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Starlight Cemetery. Arrangements are with Reese Funeral Home.
