Joe B. Essary
Joe B. Essary, a retiree of Teledyne Continental Motors, died Monday at a local hospital. He was 61.
Essary, a native of Brooklyn, Miss., was a longtime resident of Mobile. He had worked as manager of plant engineering at Teledyne before retiring in April 1998.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Pauline S. Essary of Mobile; two daughters, Lori Bray and Melanie Walker, both of Mobile; his mother, Minnie Essary of Brooklyn, Miss.; a brother, G.O. Essary of Hattiesburg, Miss.; a sister, Sue Gillingame of Escatawpa, Miss.; and four grandchildren.
Visitation will be at noon Thursday at Radney-Belmany Funeral Home on Grelot Road, with services at 1 p.m. Burial will be at 4 p.m. in Haven Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Brooklyn.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
Kathryn B. Hanna
Kathryn Bach Hanna, who retired in 1964 as bookkeeper for M.C. Farmer Contracting Co., died Aug. 20 at a local hospital.
Mrs. Hanna was a native of Fairbury, Ill., and a resident of Mobile since 1950.
She was a member of Government Street Presbyterian Church and was active in the Meals-on-Wheels program until her health failed.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol Walding of Mobile; two brothers, Edward Bach of Fairbury and J. N. Bach of Forrest, Ill.; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at Government Street Presbyterian Church

Charles L. Hooper
Charles Leonard Hooper, who had worked as a wire winder for a wire manufacturer, died Monday in a local nursing facility at the age of 105.
Hooper was a native of Yonkers, N.Y. He was a resident of Theodore since 1983 and was a member of Knollwood Assembly of God.
Survivors include three daughters, Jean Smith of Theodore, Grace Mitchell of West Orange, N.J., and Greta Morgan of Paterson, N.J.; and seven grandchildren.
Graveside services are set for 2:30 p.m. today at Serenity Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are with Serenity Funeral Home.
Annie B. Lucas
Annie Bell Lucas, a member of St. Luke Baptist Church and a lifelong Mobilian, died Friday at a local hospital. She was 76.
Survivors include four children, Clara Mathis of West Covina, Calif., Shirley Rogers, of Chelsea, Mass., and Frankie Lee Lucas Jr. and Campbell Lucas, both of Mobile; her mother, Evelyn Isom of Mobile; 14 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be from noon to 7 p.m. Thursday at Christian Benevolent Funeral Home. Viewing will also be after 9 a.m. Friday at St. Luke Baptist Church, 751 Texas St., with visitation from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. services. Burial will be in Whispering Pines Cemetery.
Lula Mae Moore
Lula Mae Moore, a native of Orrville and longtime resident of Mobile, died Sunday at the age of 88.
Survivors include her son, James P. Moore Sr.; four sisters; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Emanuel AME Church, followed by services at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens.
Arrangements are by Christian Benevolent Funeral Home.
Sulliva Moore
Sulliva Moore, a U.S. Army veteran and Mobile resident, died Thursday at the age of 50.
Moore, a native of Pensacola, had spent his early childhood years in Wilcox County before moving to Mobile, where he attended Mobile County Training School.
He was baptized at Green Grove Baptist Church.
Moore enlisted in the Army in the mid-1960s. He had spent a number of years at an Army base in Oakland, Calif.
Survivors include two sons, Sulliva Moore II and Thomas Moore, both of Mobile; a sister, Sallie W. Martin of Mobile; and a granddaughter.
Services are set for 11 a.m. Thursday at Mosley's Funeral Home in Prichard, with visitation one hour prior to services. Burial will be in Rising Suns Cemetery.
Margaret C. Murdock
Margaret Conn Murdock, a retired hairdresser, died Tuesday at a local medical facility. She was 86.
Mrs. Murdock was a native of Hattiesburg, Miss., and a resident of Mobile, where she lived at University Oaks Retirement Residence for the past four years.
She was a former longtime resident of Gautier, Miss.
Survivors include a sister, Elizabeth Conn Oliver of Los Angeles; and two brothers, Walter Garnet Conn of Hattiesburg and Burt Conn of Mobile.
Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. today in Crestlawn Memorial Park in Ocean Springs, Miss. Radney-Belmany Funeral Home on Grelot Road is in charge of arrangements.

Stephen A. Prior
Stephen Albert Prior, who worked in day-trading instruction, died Tuesday at a local hospital. He was 57.
Prior, a native of Gloversville, N.Y., was a resident of Mobile. He had been involved in the video industry in Alabama and had also worked as a business broker. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam with the 3rd Marine Division.
Prior was a charter member of the Vietnam Veterans Association, Mobile Chapter; and a past president of the Fort Walton Beach Optimist Club.
Survivors include his wife, Deborah Prior of Mobile; three daughters, Kali Victoria Prior and Shea Alexandria Prior, both of Mobile, and Lynnette Goldson of Atlanta; a son, Stephen Sherman of Savannah, Ga.; his mother, Madoweise Etheridge of Claire, Mich.; his father, Sil Marcucci of Johnstown, N.Y.; two brothers, Ron Prior of Flushing, Mich., and Vaughn Prior of Michigan; a sister, Monti Schutz of Michigan; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Serenity Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Vincent Catholic Church, followed by a graveside service with military honors at Serenity Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends after the services at Independent Methodist Church on Halls Mill Road.
Stanford H. Wolfe
SEMMES - Stanford H. Wolfe, who had worked for the state ABC board for 19 years, died Monday at a local hospital. He was 76.
Wolfe, a native of MacClenny, Fla., was a resident of Semmes for the past 50 years and was a member of Schillinger Road Missionary Baptist Church.
He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, having served in the Aleutian Islands and attaining the rank of sergeant.
Survivors include his wife, Betty J. Wolfe of Semmes; two children, Ronald F. Wolfe of Semmes and Douglas E. Wolfe of Wilmer; a sister, Carolyn Keen of MacClenny; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 this evening at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street, where services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Valhalla Memorial Gardens in Semmes.

John H. Cook
John Howard Cook, a retiree of Scott Paper Co., died Wednesday at his home. He was 79.
Cook was a native of Andalusia, Ala., and a longtime Chickasaw resident. He was a member of Lafitte Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Blanche Cook of Chickasaw; a daughter, Linda C. Browning of Spanish Fort; two sisters, Virginia Butler of Demopolis, Ala., and Edna Earl Egidio of Orlando, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 this evening at Radney Funeral Home in Saraland, where services are set for 2 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to the building fund at Lafitte Baptist Church.
Harold L. Frye
Harold L. "Bo" Frye, a retiree of the Mobile Police Department, died Friday at a local hospital. He was 70.
Frye, a native of Monroeville, Ala., was a resident of Mobile. He spent 33 years in the Mobile police and fire communications departments.
Survivors include his wife, Sandy Frye of Mobile; a stepdaughter, Sandra E. Collier of Mobile; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
There will be no services. Arrangements were handled by Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street.
William Kirby Jr.
CITRONELLE - William Jennings Bryan Kirby Jr., who worked as a salesman, died Monday at a local hospital. He was 56.
Kirby, a native of Georgetown, S.C., was a resident of Citronelle, where he attended Citronelle United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Patrick Kirby of Citronelle; a son, Byran Kirby of Semmes; a stepdaughter, Alisa Brittingham of Saraland; a brother, John L. Kirby of Conyers, Ga.; two sisters, Janelle Yown of Tallahassee, Fla., and Joan Kirby of Monticello, Fla.; and five grandchildren.
Services are scheduled at 10 a.m. today at Citronelle United Methodist Church, with Freeman Funeral Home of Citronelle in charge of arrangements. A visitation is set from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Mayer Funeral Home in Georgetown, S.C., with graveside services at 2 p.m. Sunday in Pennyroyal Cemetery in Georgetown.

Patrick Madden Jr.
TANNER WILLIAMS - Patrick Eugene "Jappy" Madden Jr., an employee of W&W Construction Co., died Monday of injuries he received in a traffic accident. He was 19.
Madden, a native of Mobile, was a resident of the Tanner Williams community.
Survivors include his mother, Betty J. Wheeler of Theodore; adoptive parents, James and Mary Murphy of Tanner Williams; a brother, Clyde Wheeler of Mobile; a sister, Lynn Brown of Lucedale, Miss.; paternal grandparents, Violet and Danny Wood of Mobile; maternal grandparent, Ernest and Janice Wheeler of Tanner Williams; and his great-grandmother, Roselle Carter of Mobile.
Visitation will be at 4 p.m. today at Return to Bethel Church on Tanner Williams Road. Graveside services are set for 10 a.m. Friday in Pierce Creek Cemetery on Tanner Williams Road.

Joseph S. Powe Sr.
Joseph S. Powe Sr., a retired state highway department employee, died Monday at a local hospital.
Powe, who was one day shy of his 82nd birthday, was a lifelong Mobilian. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include three sons, Joseph S. Powe Jr. of Houston, David Powe of Montgomery and Michael F. Powe Sr. of Mobile; a brother, Fredrick Powe of New York; and seven grandchildren.
Viewing will be from noon to 5 p.m. Friday at Christian Benevolent Funeral Home, where visitation will be at 10 a.m. Saturday. Services will be at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.

Mary Louise Layten Saunders, a retired longtime employee of the Illinois Central Railroad, died Monday at a local nursing facility. She was 89.
Mrs. Saunders, a native of Omaha, Neb., was a resident of Mobile for more than 50 years. She was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church, where she had been Sunday school superintendent, a member of the administrative board, United Methodist Women, the Golden Agers and a past officer in the Mobile District.
In addition, her memberships included the Railway Business Women Association and several mystic societies.
Survivors include three nephews, Larry Layten of Huntsville, and Jack Layten and Steve Layten, both of Dublin, Ohio.
Services are set for 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mark United Methodist Church, with burial in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
Arrangements are by Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street.
Memorials may be made to St. Mark United Methodist Church's building fund.
Jessie Mae Wyckoff
Jessie Mae Wyckoff, a native of Hickory, Miss., and resident of Mobile, died Tuesday at a local health care facility. She was 65.
Survivors include four sisters, Lorene Dennis, Bonnie J. Etheridge and Ernestine Brinnon, all of Mobile, and Charles Marie Winston of Pensacola; three brothers, Joe L. Chapman, Willie Chapman and Henry Earl Chapman, all of Mobile; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be from noon to 5 p.m. Friday at Christian Benevolent Funeral Home. Viewing will also be after 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 2034 St. Stephens Road, with visitation and the rosary at 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at noon. Nellie G. Daniel
GULF SHORES - Nellie Gray Daniel, who had worked as an office manager at a cable television company, died Tuesday at a medical facility in Daphne. She was 81.
Mrs. Daniel, a native of Clarke County, was a resident of Gulf Shores.
She was a member of Goodhope Baptist Church and a supporter of the Alabama Sheriffs Boys and Girls Ranches.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Newsome of Gulf Shores; two brothers, Roy Edge of Thomasville, Ala., and Jessie Edge of Foley; two sisters, Floy McArthur of Birmingham and Ora Andrews of Pensacola; one grandson; and four great-grandchildren.
Services are set for 10 a.m. today at Goodhope Baptist Church in Grove Hill, Ala., with burial in the church cemetery.

Betty Lou Sturdivant
NEEDHAM - Betty Lou Sturdivant, a homemaker and resident of Needham, died Tuesday at an area hospital. She was 32.
Mrs. Sturdivant was an Alabama native.
Survivors include her parents, Jasper and Betty K. Shirley of Needham; three daughters, Alicia Marie Jenkins, Holly Deeann Sturdivant and Casey Jean Sturdivant, all of Needham; a son, James D. Lawson Jenkins of Kennedy, Ala.; a brother, Jasper M. Shirley of Kinmundy, Ill; and a sister, Susan Lynn Turner of Needham.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at Bumpers Funeral Home in Butler, Ala. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Camp Springs Church in the Camp Springs community, with burial in Camp Springs Cemetery.

Earl Stringfellow Jr.
THOMASVILLE - Eunice Earl Stringfellow Jr., a retired school teacher, died Tuesday at his home after an illness. He was 54.
Stringfellow, a native of Greensboro, Ala., was a resident of Thomasville. He had taught in the Thomasville City School System for 21 years.
He was a member and deacon at Pineview Baptist Church, and had served in the Alabama Air National Guard.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Stringfellow of Thomasville; two daughters, Carol Schaffer of Macon, Ga., and Rita Stringfellow of Saraland; and a sister, Louise Tucker of Moundville, Ala.
Services are set for 2 p.m. today at O'Byrant Chapel Funeral Home in Thomasville, with burial in Choctaw Corner Cemetery in Thomasville.

Sam Calderone
CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. - Sam Calderone, a lifelong Chicago Heights resident, died Saturday at a local hospital after a brief illness. He was 73.
Calderone retired from the Ford Motor Stamping Plant in Chicago Heights in 1985 after 40 years. He was a member of the United Auto Workers.
He received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy after serving during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mary N. Calderone of Chicago Heights; a daughter, Jolene Popp of New Lenox, Ill.; a son, Bruce Anthony Calderone of Saraland; two sisters, Jennie Venturella of Lima, Ohio, and Lena Calderone of Chicago Heights; two brothers, Nick Calderone and Frank Calderone, both of Chicago Heights; and five grandchildren.
Visitation will be at 9 a.m. today at Panozzo Brothers Funeral Home, 530 W. 14th St. in Chicago Heights, followed by services at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery in Glenwood, Ill.
Peter A. Stadther
BATON ROUGE, La. - Peter A. Stadther, a native Mobilian, died Sunday. He was 90.
Stadther, a resident of Baton Rouge, was a retired home and commercial electrician.
Survivors include his daughter, Garland S. Dix of Greenwell Springs, La.; a brother, Thomas Stadther of Mobile; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 Friday at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street, where services are set for 10 a.m. Saturday.Burial will be in Pine Crest Cemetery.
