MOBILE COUNTY
Jettie C. McLendon
Jettie C. McLendon, a homemaker and member of Theodore Heights Baptist Church, died Monday at her home. She was 92.
Mrs. McLendon, a native Leakesville, Miss., was a resident of Mobile for the past 58 years.
Survivors include two sons, Huey Gene McLendon Sr. and Frankie McLendon, both of Mobile; three daughters, Alba Driscoll and Sylvia Hamilton, both of Mobile, Velma Jamison of Natchez, Miss.; one sister, Delores Turnage of Hesperia, Calif; one brother, Henry Newton Ball of Aberdeen, Miss.; 19 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday, with services at 11 a.m. at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
Leslie Moore Sr.
Leslie Moore Sr., a native of Wilcox County and resident of Prichard, died Friday in a local hospital. He was 74.
Known as "Less" to family and friends, Moore was an automotive mechanic in the Mobile and Prichard areas. He was a member of Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church in Prichard.
He is survived by his wife, Lizzie Lashore Moore of Prichard; one son, Leslie Moore Jr. of Prichard; and four daughters, Marie McNeil, Sandra Cooper, Linda Nicholson and Brenda Starr of Prichard.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church. Visitation will be one hour before the funeral. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery.
Memorial Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Eunice C. Yelling
Eunice Cavanaugh Yelling, a native of Atmore and longtime resident of Mobile, died Saturday in a local health care facility. She was 86.
Mrs. Yelling is survived by a son, Alonzo Yelling Jr. of Mobile; and five daughters, Grace Wyatt, Irmatean Watson and Carolyn Davis, all of Mobile, Altheris McConico of Daphne and Hattie Johnson of Fairhope.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Friday until the noon services at Hope Chapel AME Zion Church. Burial will be in Pine Crest Cemetery. Johnson-Allen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elbert Grady Jones
PENNINGTON, Ala. — Elbert Grady Jones, a native of Billingsley and resident of Pennington, died Monday at a family residence. He was 79.
He is survived by his wife, Geraldine B. Jones of Pennington; one daughter, Carol Drury of Linden; two stepsons, Ricky James of Waynesboro, Miss. and Charles Jones of Pennington; one stepdaughter, Kathy James of Pennington; one sister, Clara Cobb of Huntsville; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bumpers Funeral Home in Butler. Graveside services and burial will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday in Ebenezer Cemetery in Pennington.

Vera Craft Summar
DEMOPOLIS, Ala. — Vera Craft Summar, a homemaker and member of Gallion Baptist Church, died Monday at a Selma hospital. She was 82.
Mrs. Summar was a Missouri native and resident of Demopolis.
Survivors include a daughter, Patti Summar Tucker of Linden, Ala.; a son, Ronald Lee Summar of Portageville, Mo.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at O'Bryant Chapel Funeral Home in Linden, with graveside services at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Demopolis Memorial Gardens.

Carolyn Jay
FRISCO CITY, Ala. — Carolyn Jay, a resident of Frisco City, died Sunday at her residence. She was 48.
Mrs. Jay was a lunchroom worker for the Monroe County Board of Education. She was a member of Monroeville Church of Nazarene, where she was active in the Silverboxes Ladies Group.
She is survived by her husband, Dale Jay of Frisco City; two daughters, Wendy Jay Haygens of Montgomery and Cristie June Jay of Frisco City; her mother, Melba Jones of Frisco City; two brothers, Kenneth Jones of Atmore and Tracy Jones of Excel; three sisters, Judy Owens of Excel, Annel Brooks of Mobile and Brenda Johnson of Uriah.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Monroeville Church of Nazarene. Burial will be in Jay Cemetery.

John Byrd
WAVELAND, Miss. — John "Joe" Byrd, a native of Brewton, Ala., and resident of Waveland, died of natural causes Saturday in Waveland at the age of 56.
Byrd had worked as a laborer with the city of Bay St. Louis, Miss.
Survivors include two daughters, Susan Ellis of Waveland and Dianne Kennedy of Bay St. Louis; five brothers, Robert Byrd of Mobile, Ralph Byrd, Edward Byrd and Thomas Byrd, all of Brewton, and Eugene Byrd of Allon, Nev.; four sisters, Louise Hale and Callimay Lee, both of Brewton, Doris Odom of Allon and Edna Murphy of Mobile; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at Riemann Funeral Home in Bay St. Louis on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the 3 p.m. services. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Rotten Bayou, Miss.
Gerald Hillebrand
DAPHNE - Gerald Hillebrand, a native of Illinois and a resident of Daphne, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at his residence.
He is survived by three daughters, Amanda Simore of Dauphin Island, Tammy Goleman of Bayou La Batre and Melinda Dickens of Dauphin Island; three brothers, Bob Hillebrand, Kenneth Hillebrand and Danny Hillebrand, all of Illinois; two sisters, Judy Creemens and Ida Sparks, both of Illinois, and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held later in Illinois. Local arrangements are by Bayview Funeral Home Daphne/Spanish Fort Chapel.
Joy Leigh Hurley
FAIRHOPE — The funeral service for Joy Leigh Hurley of Fairhope will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Wolfe Funeral Home in Fairhope.
The Rev. Brad McClain will officiate and burial follows at Memory Gardens of Fairhope.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Ms. Hurley, 52, died Sunday Sept. 12, 1999, at a local hospital. The Fairhope native is survived by her sons, Richard Benson Jr. of Conyers, Ga., and Ryan Benson of Point Clear; one daughter, Shannon Wilson Coburn of Prattville; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.B. Hurley of Fairhope; and one grandchild.
Arrangements are by Wolfe Funeral Home in Fairhope.

Edith S. Emerson
Edith Strachan Emerson, 63, who had worked for 35 years as a hairdresser before retiring, died Tuesday at her Mobile home.
Survivors include four children, Dennis Emerson Jr., Cynthia McGill and David Emerson, all of Mobile, and Debbie Colvert of Semmes; four sisters, a brother; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be this evening from 5 to 8 at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street, with the rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. Services are set for 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with burial at New Hope Cemetery.
Eugene C. deRosett
Eugene C. deRosett, who had worked in electronics installation as a civil service employee, died Monday at a local hospital. He was 77.
A Kentucky native, deRosett was a longtime resident of Mobile and was a member of Dauphin Way Baptist Church.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force. During World War II, deRosett served with the 31st Infantry "Dixie" Division.
Survivors include his son, Ron deRosett of Carson City, Nev.; a brother, Darvin deRosett of Pierceton, Ky.; two sisters, Ann Hughes of Pierceton and Ruth Ousley of Prestonburg, Ky.; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service is set for 10 a.m. today at Dauphin Way Baptist Church, with burial at 4 p.m. at Sims Cemetery in Morton, Miss.
Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street is handling local arrangements.
Gladys M. Thompson
Gladys Marie Thompson, who worked at the University of South Alabama Medical Center, died Thursday.
Ms. Thompson, 59, was a Wilmer native and resided in Mobile. She was a member of Moffettville Baptist Church in Wilmer.
Survivors include her son, Lionel Thompson of Mobile; six brothers, Ellis Thompson Jr., Eugene Thompson and Lonnie Thompson, all of Mobile, Frank Thompson, David Thompson and Albert Thompson, all of Wilmer; and three sisters, Ida Mae Thompson of Wilmer, Ruthie Thompson and Elnetta Anderson, both of Mobile.
Viewing will begin at noon Friday at Christian Benevolent Funeral Home, with visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. A second viewing Saturday is to start after 9 a.m. at Moffettville Baptist Church, with a second visitation from 10 a.m. until services begin at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Moffettville Cemetery.

Benjamin D. Bishop
FAIRHOPE - Benjamin D. Bishop, a native of Alabama and a resident of Fairhope, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at a local hospital. He was 91.
He is survived by his wife, Dovie Bishop; four daughters, Margaret Ritchey of Dallas, Vergie Huggins of Fairhope, Faye Fidler of Silverhill and Bertha Bishop of Mount Vernon; three sons, James C. Bishop and David E. Bishop, both of Fairhope, and Charles M. Bishop of Mobile; 22 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Bayview Funeral Home in Fairhope. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Burial will take place in Brook-Cedron Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are by Bayview Funeral Home, Fairhope chapel.
Marcus Crook
BAY MINETTE - Marcus Crook, a native and resident of Bay Minette, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999. He was 29 years old and was employed by the Baldwin County Corrections Center.
He is survived by his wife, Denise Crook of Tensaw; his mother, Commie Lee Crook of Bay Minette; 10 brothers, Hillard Anderson, Samuel Crook, Kenneth Crook, Clarence Crook III, James Crook, Ruffin Crook and Norborne Williams, all of Bay Minette, David Crook of Akron, Ohio, Michael Crook of Montgomery and Anthony Crook of Fairhope; four sisters, Josephine West, Janice James and Dorothy Johnson, all of Bay Minette, and Shirley Heard of Foley.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at Stone Deliverance Temple Church. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the church with Bro. David Crook officiating. Burial will take place in Sunrise Cemetery.

Evelyn Vitous
ROBERTSDALE - Evelyn Vitous, a resident of Robertsdale and a native of Niagara Falls, N.Y., died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999. She was 84.
Mrs. Vitous is survived by two daughters, Beatrice Kendrick and Georgia Kilgore, both of Robertsdale; eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at 9:30 this morning at Mack Funeral Home in Robertsdale.
Graveside services will follow at 10 a.m. at Silverhill Cemetery in Silverhill with the Rev. Jeff Copeland officiating.
Arrangements are by Mack Funeral Home.
Ella Mae Sanspree
FOLEY - Ella Mae Sanspree, a native of Frisco City and a resident of Foley, died Monday, Aug. 30, 1999. She was 83.
Survivors include four sons, Raymond Sanspree and Royce Sanspree, both of Foley, Ralph Sanspree of Pensacola and Roger Sanspree of Fairhope; three daughters, Ella Nims and Agnes Ard, both of Foley, and Johnnie Gilette of Pensacola; 29 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
A graveside memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Pine Rest Memorial Park in Foley.

Pauletta Jane Parrish
FOLEY - Pauletta Jane Parrish, a native of Arkansas and a resident of Foley, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999. She was 55.

Lula A. Ezell
GROVE HILL - Lula Adams Ezell, the oldest member of the Orange Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Grove Hill, died Thursday at her residence after an illness. She was 99.
Mrs. Ezell, known as "Mama Lula" to family and friends, was a native of Jefferson County. She had resided in Grove Hill for more than 50 years.
For 60 years, she was a member of Winbush Success No. 749, Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by her adopted sons and her sister, Mary Evans of Daphne.
Services are set for 11 a.m. today at Orange Hill Missionary Baptist Church, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
Jackson Memorial Funeral Home of Jackson, Ala., is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas C. Downs
PETERMAN - Thomas Carsue Downs, who had worked as a mechanic, died Monday.
Downs, 84, was a lifelong resident of Peterman.
Survivors include his son, Wayne Downs, and a brother, Alvin Downs, both of Peterman; three sisters, Willie Mae Philen and Mattie Lou Philen, both of Mexia, Ala., and Maggie Puckett of Carrolton, Ala.; and three grandchildren.
Graveside services are set for 10 a.m. today at Philadelphia Baptist Cemetery in Tunnel Springs, Ala.
