John J. Guthrie, 44, associate professor of history, economics
NEW SMYRNA BEACH - John J. Guthrie Jr., 44, of Magnolia Street, died Feb. 22, 2000, of natural causes at his home.
Dr. Guthrie was an associate professor of history and economics at Daytona Beach Community College. Born in Arlington, Va., he moved to this area in 1980 from Annandale, Va.
He received a doctorate in history from the University of Florida in 1993. He was an active member of the Southern Historical Association and authored several books, including The Florida Land Boom, with William Frazer, a story of developers, land speculation, and promoters in Florida, 1913-25; Keepers of the Spirits, a study of Prohibition and the Florida courts, 1915-25; and a forthcoming study of the professional sports business in America since 1950. The University of Florida Press will soon publish Cassadaga: The South's Oldest Spiritualist Community, a collaborative work with DBCC professor Gary Monroe, Ann Braude of Harvard University, and others.
Dr. Guthrie received the DBCC Faculty Senate Award for Research and Professional Development for 1995-96. In addition to his scholarly pursuits, he was a popular teacher. He was a faculty sponsor of the History Club and, in 1995, was honored with the DBCC Students' Choice Award for Most Effective Teacher. As one student said, professor Guthrie "is good at what he does, he's funny, and we learn something at the same time."
He is survived by his mother, Helen Guthrie of DeLand; a brother, Joseph A. of DeLand; and two sisters, Edie White of Midland, Va., and Terry Slover of Princeton, N.J.

Nancy Kay Allen
DELAND - Nancy Kay Allen, 52, of Torchwood Drive, died Feb. 24, 2000, at an area care center.
Ms. Allen retired as a teacher at DeLand Middle School. She also had taught in Brussels, Belgium, California, Indiana, Pennsylvania and New York. Born in Worcester, Mass., she moved to this area from Pittsburgh in 1980.
She was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ of Orange City.
Ms. Allen is survived by her parents, Charles and Jeannie Kay of DeLand; two brothers, Charles Edward Kay of Groton, Conn., and Michael Richard Kay of Overland Park, Kan.; and a sister, Patricia Kay Kazi of Casselberry.

Truman Cecil Ballard
DELTONA - Truman Cecil Ballard, 74, of Courtland Boulevard, died Feb. 28, 2000, at DeBary Manor nursing home.
Mr. Ballard was a carpenter in the construction industry. Born in Red Bay, Ala., he moved to this area from Chicago in 1974.
He was Baptist.
Mr. Ballard is survived by his wife, Nell; four daughters, Charlotte McGue of Chicago, Debbie Roberson and Carol Grzesiakowski, both of Deltona, and Barbara Kelly of DeLand; a brother, James Kelly of Grand Rapids, Mich.; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Myron E. Blaine
ORANGE CITY - Myron E. Blaine, 83, of Lawton Avenue, died Feb. 28, 2000, at DeBary Manor nursing home.
Mr. Blaine was manager of the University of Missouri bookstore and student union. Born in Goodfield, Ill., he moved to this area from Denver in 1983.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church in Deltona.
Mr. Blaine served as an able-bodied seaman in the U.S. Merchant Marine during World War II.
He is survived by his caregiver, Norman Cordova of Orange City.

Eda Brazenas
DELAND - Eda Brazenas, 78, of Evergreen Terrace, died Feb. 27, 2000, at Memorial Hospital-West Volusia.
Mrs. Brazenas retired as a Realtor and draftsman. Born in Kretinga, Lithuania, she moved to this area 29 years ago from Soviet-occupied Lithuania.
She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in DeLand, the Daytona Lithuania-American Club, the Lithuania American Club, the World Federation of Women's Clubs and the John Birch Society.
Mrs. Brazenas is survived by her husband of 59 years, Vilius, a daughter, Lyvia Garsys of DeLand, two brothers in Lithuania, one sister in Lithuania, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Emily E. Chathams
ORANGE CITY - Emily E. Chathams, 64, of Birch Avenue, died Feb. 21, 2000, at Florida Hospital-Fish Memorial.
Mrs. Chathams retired as branch manager for Security First in Orange City after 10 years. She worked in the banking industry for 40 years. Born in Freeport, Ill., she moved to this area 28 years ago from Delaware City, Del.
She was a member of Emmaus Lutheran Church in Orange City. She was a former member of the Sorosis Club of Orange City and Four Towns Business and Professional Women's Association. She was a two-time director for the Greater Orange City Area Chamber of Commerce.
Mrs. Chathams is survived by her husband, Robert E., a daughter, Elizabeth Lambert of Orange City, and a sister, Sylvia Maxey of Dover, Del.

DELAND - Helen Clarice Cole, 70, of West Howry Avenue, died Feb. 24, 2000, at her home.
Mrs. Cole was a sales representative for Avon and Watkins products. Born in Orlando, she moved to this area from Leesburg in 1954.
She was a member of Stetson Baptist Church in DeLand and a 1947 graduate of Leesburg High School.
Mrs. Cole is survived by a son, Allen of DeLeon Springs; three sisters, Mildred Gore and Berneice Lay, both of Ocala, and Clara Hansen of Kissimmee; and four grandchildren.

Jessie Mae Coleman
DELAND - Jessie Mae Coleman, 90, of West Beresford Road, died Feb. 24, 2000, at Oakwood Garden of DeLand.
Mrs. Coleman was a domestic worker. She moved to this area many years ago from her birthplace of Brooklet, Ga.
She was a member of Emanuel Seventh-day Adventist Church in DeLand, where she served as a deaconess.
Mrs. Coleman is survived by two daughters, Lorraine Byner of DeLand and Pearlie Mae Harris of Miami; two sons, John Akins of Livingston, Calif., and Jessie Akins of Greenville, Miss.; and 13 grandchildren.

Pauline B. Colliflower
DELTONA - Pauline B. Colliflower, 90, of Whitewood Drive, died Feb. 25, 2000, at a private care home.
Mrs. Colliflower retired as chief operator for C & P Telephone Co. in 1969, after 40 years. Born in Chattanooga, Tenn., she moved to this area in 1969 from Jessup, Md.
She was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Enterprise, the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Southwest Volusia Democratic Club. She was an avid artist.
Mrs. Colliflower is survived by a son, Kenneth H. Ryan of Grand Blanc, Mich.; a daughter, Dorotha McNamara of Hanover, Md.; two brothers, Warren Monroe of Ormond Beach and Robert Monroe of Chattanooga; five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

DELAND - William John Cooper, 68, of Arizona Avenue, died Feb. 25, 2000, at Vencor Hospital in Green Cove Springs.
Mr. Cooper retired as a restaurant-equipment salesman for Taylor Freezers in Lake City. Born in Toledo, Ohio, he moved here from Orlando in 1999.
He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in DeLand. He enjoyed playing cards and fishing.
Mr. Cooper served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War.
He is survived by three sons, James P. of Winston-Salem, N.C., John Paul of DeLand, and Steven Lenn of Orlando; a daughter, Vicki-Ann Reed of Perkasie, Pa.; a brother, James E. of Toledo; and 11 grandchildren.

DELTONA - Nellie E. DeStefano, 77, of Fayetteville Avenue, died Feb. 23, 2000, at Vencor Hospital in Green Cove Springs.
Mrs. DeStefano was a manager in a retail-sales company. Born in Waltham, Mass., she moved to this area in 1988 from Merrimack, N.H.
She was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church in Deltona.
Mrs. DeStefano is survived by her husband, Dominic; two sons, Joseph of Lorton, Va., and Neil of Southhampton, N.J.; a brother, Joseph Terrasi of California; two sisters, Jeannie Lawn of Waltham and Addie Terrasi of Deltona; and one grandchild.

Dorothy Wideen Foreyt
DELAND - Dorothy Wideen Foreyt, 77, of Gleneagles Drive South, died Feb. 24, 2000, at her home after a short illness.
Mrs. Foreyt and her husband owned and managed a restaurant and motel in Prairie du Chien, Wis., 1963-70. In 1970 they moved to Daytona Beach, where they owned and operated the Southwind Motel, which they sold in 1978. At that time, they moved to DeLand.
She was gifted in music appreciation and was involved with the Sweet Adelines in Wisconsin and Florida. Most recently she coached a quartet in DeLand.
Mrs. Foreyt is survived by her husband, Vivian B.; three sons, Tom Zerbel of Stoughton, Wis., Ray Zerbel of Orange City and Ken Zerbel of DeLand; a sister, Annabelle Underwood of Ormond Beach; a brother, Bob Wideen of Verona, Wis.; four stepchildren, George Foreyt of Bloomington, Wis., Jerome and Kevin Foreyt, both of Madison, Wis., and Ellen Rocque of New Berlin, Wis.; and several nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

DELTONA - Una Verona Francis, 74, of Sullivan Street, died Feb. 26, 2000, at her home.
Mrs. Francis retired as a nurse's aide for the Morris View Nursing Home in East Hanover, N.J., after 25 years. Born in St. Andrew, Jamaica, she moved to this area in 1990 from Morristown, N.J.
A very active member of Church of God in Christ in Lake Helen, she enjoyed helping others.
Mrs. Francis is survived by a daughter, Doreen Ernandez of Morris Plains, N.J.

Eleanor Goodwin
CASSADAGA - Eleanor Goodwin, 87, of Marion Street, died Feb. 29, 2000, at Beverly Healthcare Deltona.
Miss Goodwin owned and operated Cassadaga Grocery for 30 years. Born in Newark, N.J., she moved to this area in 1960 from Maplewood, N.J.
A member of the Southern Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp Meeting Association, she enjoyed knitting and crocheting.
Miss Goodwin is survived by two nieces who were her caregivers, Marjorie Nevin and Jeanette Kuchek, both of Deltona.

Forestine Jenkin
ORANGE CITY - Forestine Jenkin, 80, of Westlake Drive, died Feb. 28, 2000, at Florida Hospital-Fish Memorial.
A homemaker, Mrs. Jenkin was born in Grove City, Pa., and moved to this area from Mount Dora in 1996.
A former member of Tavares United Methodist Church and Kappa Delta, she was a volunteer at John Knox Village Medical Center.
Mrs. Jenkin is survived by her husband of 58 years, Wendell, and a daughter, Lynne Jenkin of Boca Raton.

Ella C. Kuykendall
DELAND - Ella C. Kuykendall, 91, of North Amelia Avenue, died Feb. 24, 2000, at a local care center.
Mrs. Kuykendall retired as office manager for a trucking company. Born in Powder Springs, Ga., she moved to this area in 1970 from Atlanta.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of DeLand, where she was a member of the Keenagers. She was an avid quilter and taught crafts in the DeLand area. She was very active in the Volusia County Homemakers Club.
Mrs. Kuykendall is survived by a son, Arthur Robert of Edgewater, and a special friend, Dottie Dye and her family, who provided for her care for many years.

Harry Leonard
DELTONA - Harry Leonard, 86, of Duncan Street, died Feb. 24, 2000, at Florida Hospital-Fish Memorial.
Mr. Leonard retired in 1975 from Anchor Hocking Glass Co. in his hometown of Connellsville, Pa., after 33 years. He moved to DeLand from Connellsville in 1979.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Mr. Leonard is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rita M.; a daughter, Wanda Lingenfield of Connellsville; three brothers, Glenn of Jacksonville and Donald and Gene, both of Arizona; two sisters, Olive Wingrove of Scottdale, Pa., and Lillian Rouzen of New Mexico; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mr. Lorenzo is survived by a daughter, Carima Mary Segarra of Puerto Rico; his father, Raul Segarra of Deltona; his mother, Nereida Lorenzo of Camp Hill, Pa.; a brother, Raul A. Segarra of Deltona; and a sister, Sandra Segarra of Heidelberg, Pa.

Rita McBirnie Nash
ORANGE CITY - Rita McBirnie Nash, 68, of Briarcliff Drive, died Feb. 23, 2000, at her home after a long battle with lung cancer.
Mrs. Nash retired in 1984 as a real-estate secretary in Arlington, Va. Born in Thermopolis, Wyo., she moved to this area in 1984 from Fairfax, Va.
A 1949 graduate of Boone (Iowa) High School, she enjoyed gardening.
Mrs. Nash is survived by her husband of 50 years, Monte E.; a son, Timothy of Fairfax; a daughter, Pamela O'Connor-Hendrick of Orange City; four sisters, Nessie McChristie of Rockford, Ill., Lois Meyer of Grimes, Iowa, Clarice Bane of Boone and Janice Bierman of Des Moines, Iowa; and three grandchildren.

DEBARY - Gilbert Robbins, 74, of Floridana Drive, died Feb. 23, 2000, at Florida Hospital-Fish Memorial.
Mr. Robbins was a licensed practical nurse for the former Seminole Memorial Hospital. He retired in 1988 from Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford. Born in Sussex, N.J., he moved to this area in 1965 from Middletown, N.Y.
He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in DeBary.
Mr. Robbins served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He is survived by a son, Timothy A. of DeBary; a brother, William of Titusville; and three sisters, Mary Bowen of Walden, N.Y., Ina Petro of Franklin, N.J., and Caroline Robbins of Spring Valley, N.Y.

LEBANON, Ohio - Ulah W. Sherritt, 88, of Monroe Road, died Feb. 24, 2000, at Lebanon Country Manor.
A homemaker, Mrs. Sherritt was born in Somerset, Ky.

DELTONA - Cleo Ann Spence, 77, of Briarwood Avenue, died Feb. 26, 2000, at her home.
A homemaker, Mrs. Spence moved to this area in 1968 from her hometown of Indianapolis.
She was a member of the Homemakers Club in Deltona and a former volunteer for the Deltona Regional Library. She enjoyed arts and crafts.
Mrs. Spence is survived by three sons, Jeffrey F. of Eagle Lake, Horace B. Jr. of Seminole and Vern Edgar of DeLand; a daughter, Dixie Lee Spence of DeLand; two sisters, Dora Jean Downer of DeBary and Julia C. Smith of Carmel, Ind.; and seven grandchildren.

Paul C. Thomas
ORANGE CITY - Paul C. Thomas, 89, of Sweetgum Drive, died Feb. 18, 2000, at a local care center.
Mr. Thomas was superintendent of building and grounds for Wooster (Ohio) Public Schools and director of the physical plant at Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster for 28 years. Born in Shreve, Ohio, he moved to this area from Wooster in 1973.
He was a member of the United Church of Christ since 1933, where he served as a deacon, an elder and president of the consistory. He was a member of the Wooster City School Board.
Mr. Thomas is survived by a son, Rex C. of Virginia Beach, Va.; a brother, Verde of Wooster; two sisters, Marcella Thomas Blosser of Kent, Ohio, and Doris Thomas Sidle of Orrville, Ohio; and two grandchildren.
