Alpha L. Alfano
DELAND - Alpha L. Alfano, 83, of Mohawk Avenue, died March 4, 2000, at her home.
Mrs. Alfano retired in 1980 after 18 years as a dietitian for Volusia County Schools. Born in Luverne, Ala., she moved to this area from Daytona Beach in 1950.
She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church in DeLand.
Mrs. Alfano is survived by her husband of 22 years, Joseph L.; two sons, Charles R. Reeves of DeLand and Bob Lee of Altamonte Springs; a daughter, Millie D. Linsley Kennedy of DeLand; a sister, Lena B. Evans of Scottsdale, Ariz.; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Vincenzo Armetta
DELAND - Vincenzo Armetta, 97, of Eagle Pass Trail, died March 5, 2000, at Florida Lutheran Retirement Center.
Mr. Armetta retired as a furniture finisher. Born in Sicily, Italy, he moved to this area from Boynton Beach in 1991.
He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in DeLand.
Mr. Armetta is survived by a daughter, Doris Stubenvoll of DeLand, and three grandchildren.

Helen T. Averitt
EUSTIS - Helen T. Averitt, 78, of Averitt Lane, died Feb. 29, 2000, at Memorial Hospital-West Volusia.
A homemaker, Mrs. Averitt moved to this area 32 years ago from Philadelphia.
She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2380, both in DeLand. She also was a member of Gold Star Mothers, a group for mothers who have lost children in war.
Mrs. Averitt is survived by her husband of 59 years, Gordon, a son, Chuck of Pine Lakes, and three grandchildren.

John A. Bennett
ASTOR - John A. Bennett, 87, of Water Oak Road, died March 3, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Bennett was a production manager for Robert Shaw Controls in Tennessee. Born in Troy, Tenn., he moved to Astor in 1978 from Knoxville, Tenn.
He was a member of Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church in Knoxville.
Mr. Bennett is survived by a sister, Blanche Christie of Midland, Texas, and a niece, Margret Jasper of Little Rock, Ark.

Tina Fay Brasseur
DEBARY - Tina Fay Brasseur, 42, of Sanford Avenue, died Feb. 28, 2000, at Florida Hospital-South in Orlando.
Mrs. Brasseur was the owner of a children's clothing store. Born in Lytham Saint Annes, England, she moved to this area in 1998 from Saint Martin, West Indies.
She was Catholic.
Mrs. Brasseur is survived by her husband, Philippe; a son, Paul Lee of DeBary; her parents, James R.F. Brewster and Barbara Brewster, both of Bouernemouth, England; and two brothers, Bruce Melvin Brewster of Brisbane, Australia, and Gary Charles Brewster of Poole, England.

Elizabeth Harshbarger Clay-Locke
DELAND - Elizabeth Harshbarger Clay-Locke, 91, of North Stone Street, died March 3, 2000, at her apartment at Sterling House.
Mrs. Clay-Locke retired in 1975 after 50 years as a schoolteacher. She graduated from high school at 16, and received her bachelor's and master's degrees from what is now Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va. She taught at every grade level in public schools and was an associate professor at Stetson University.
Born in Milton, W.Va., she moved to this area in 1952 from Clermont. After moving to DeLand, she taught at Wisconsin Avenue/Dempsie Brewster Elementary School. In 1968, she joined the Stetson University department of education, teaching preparation-for-internship classes to prospective teachers. In addition to teaching, she was an accomplished pianist and organist, and was the organist at the Methodist Church in Milton. Locally, she was the accompanist for the DeLand Lions Club minstrel shows in the 1950s.
A member of Trinity United Methodist Church in DeLand and Delta Kappa Gamma, PEO, Mrs. Clay-Locke was a charter member of the Century Club in Milton, which was chartered in 1923.
She is survived by a son, Hank Clay of DeLand, a daughter, Carol LaPides of Atlanta, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Bennie T. Deese
LARGO - Bennie T. Deese, 81, a former resident of Deltona, died March 5, 2000, at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg.
Mr. Deese retired as a machinist. Born in Stanley County, N.C., he moved to Deltona in 1973 from Towson, Md., and to Largo from Deltona in 1998.
A 32nd-degree Mason, he was a member of Landmark Masonic Lodge in Deltona and Deltona Lakes Baptist Church.
Mr. Deese served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He is survived by two sons, Jerald of Largo and Stephen of Pensacola, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Robert F. 'Bob' Denison
DELAND - Robert F. "Bob" Denison, 57, of North Garfield Avenue, died March 3, 2000, at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Treatment Center in Tampa, after a battle with cancer. A memorial service is set for 2 p.m. Friday, March 10, at First United Methodist Church of DeLand, 115 E. Howry Ave.
Mr. Denison worked for radio station WHCU and Cornell University for nearly 35 years as an engineer and radio personality. He was most proud of his engineering accomplishments. In 1987, when the radio station was sold, he transferred to Cornell's Educational Television Center in Media Services on the state campus, where he served as a broadcast engineer. He was engineering director 1987-94. He also worked with the cooperative extension, designing and overseeing the installation of a statewide satellite network, and was instrumental in locating a distance learning downlink site in nearly every county in New York.
Born in Ithaca, N.Y., he moved to DeLand in 1994, where he was director of engineering at BAF Communications Corp. In that position, he headed the team for the design, building and integration of broadcast television vehicles that are used worldwide.
Mr. Denison graduated from Ithaca High School in 1960, where he was involved with the award-winning Accent on Youth. In April 1997, he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, composite non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He developed a Web site (http://www.bobdenison.com) chronicling his illness and treatment, and linking to many cancer-information Web sites.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Nash Denison; his mother, Rose Osvath of Ithaca; two daughters, Megan Marie Denison of Ithaca and Marcy O'Malley Brandt of Oneonta, N.Y.; a son, Kelly Cole-Denison of Ithaca; a sister, Kathleen Denison Overbaugh of Trumansburg, N.Y.; a brother, Donald Denison of Ithaca; two grandsons, Tucker and Austin Brandt of Oneonta; and several nieces and nephews.

Reinaldo Domenech
DELTONA - Reinaldo Domenech, 58, of Voyager Street, died March 3, 2000, at Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford.
Mr. Domenech worked in maintenance for TI Group Automotive Systems in Sanford for 12 years. Born in Patilla, Puerto Rico, he moved to this area in 1988 from the Bronx, N.Y.
He was a member of St. Clare Catholic Community in Deltona and played the guitar.
Mr. Domenech is survived by his wife of 30 years, Aurea L. Irizarry; a stepson, Jose Rivera of the Bronx; three stepdaughters, Aurea Sloane, Brunilda Diaz and Yvette Gonzalez, all of Deltona; his mother, Paula Rios of the Bronx; a brother, three sisters and seven stepgrandchildren.

John N. Germaske
DELAND - John N. Germaske, 89, of Chipola Avenue, died March 3, 2000, at Woodland Terrace.
Mr. Germaske's love of flowers, especially orchids, was his lifework. He owned and operated John Germaske Orchids in both Mount Kisco, N.Y., and Miami. Born in Connersville, Pa., he moved to this area from Miami in 1998.
He was Catholic and served on the board of directors for the South Florida Orchid Society, of which he was a member. He also was a member of Volusia County Orchid Society and was a judge at many orchid shows in South Florida. He exhibited orchids in shows in California, New York and Florida, and had received patents for some of the orchids he grew.
Mr. Germaske is survived by a son, Dennis of Fort Lauderdale; a daughter, Lillian G. Myers of DeLand; a brother, Larry of Bradenton; two sisters, Clare Slack of New Port Richey and Elizabeth Osborn of Saluda, Va.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Manuel J. Gomes
DELTONA - Manuel J. Gomes, 74, of South Saxon Boulevard, died March 2, 2000, at Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford.
Mr. Gomes was self-employed as a mason contractor for 30 years and owned Eagle Fence Co. for 15 years, both in his hometown of South Dennis, Mass. He moved to this area from South Dennis in 1988.
He was a member of St. Clare Catholic Community in Deltona, Holy Trinity in West Harwich, Mass., and Dennis Pines Golf Club of South Dennis. He loved golf.
Mr. Gomes is survived by a brother, John J. of South Dennis, two sisters, Mary C. Meade of Deltona and Anna Holbert of Hanover, Mass., and several nieces and nephews.

Linda Sue James
DELTONA - Linda Sue James, 51, of Garfield Road, died March 5, 2000, at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach.
Mrs. James was a floral designer for Dottie's Florist in DeLand for 25 years. She moved to this area in 1970 from her hometown of Miami.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Orange City. She enjoyed bowling and crafts and was a volunteer at Happy Hands Day Care and Forest Lake Elementary in Deltona. Family was very important to her and she was the center of her family.
Mrs. James is survived by her husband, Kenneth E.; two daughters, Barbara G. Loehler and Clara L. Casale, both of Deltona; her mother, Clara Otten of Miami; two brothers, Louis Otten of Palm Coast and Bernard Otten of Deltona; two sisters, Terry Cutole of Deltona and Diane Preiser of Osteen; and two grandchildren.

Coletta F. Kennedy
DEBARY - Coletta F. Kennedy, 72, of Grey Oaks Court, died March 1, 2000, at her home.
Mrs. Kennedy retired after 10 years as general manager for the Salvation Army in Fort Lauderdale. Born in Cincinnati, she moved to this area in 1976 from New Jersey and Fort Lauderdale.
She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in DeBary.
Mrs. Kennedy is survived by two daughters, Donna R. Rogers of DeBary and Margaret E. Kennedy of Coral Springs; three brothers, Theodore J. of Franklin, N.C., Raymond L. of Cincinnati and Daniel J. of Greenville, Ohio; two sisters, Selene T. Reik of North Carolina and Karen Woulms of Cincinnati; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Hazel Thompkins Motzer
DEBARY - Hazel Thompkins Motzer, 96, of Woodberry Drive, died March 4, 2000, at DeBary Manor nursing home.
Ms. Motzer was a secretary for the Pennsylvania state school system. Born in Kalamazoo, Mich., she moved to this area in 1970 from Pennsylvania.
She was a member of Women of the Moose in Sanford. She played pool in tournaments, and enjoyed playing cards and league bowling.
Ms. Motzer is survived by her care provider, Verna Dickens of DeBary.
