John Kirk Wall
SHREVEPORT, La. - John Kirk Wall, 86, Shreveport, died at 1:40 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Wall was born to the late Hank and Marguerite Wall. He was raised in Carthage and was a 1935 graduate of Carthage High School, where he served as class president for two years. He also lived in Waterloo, Iowa. He was a 33-year member of AA. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.
He was married to his wife, Frances Wall, for 64 years. She survives.
Additional survivors include two daughters, Patricia Hurst, Shreveport, and Sally Nehring; sister, Margaret Haynie; brother, Richard Wall, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held Feb. 10 at Riverside Church, Bossier City, La. Officiated was Brother Lee T. Jenkins.
Hebert Lane
LIBERAL, Mo. - Hebert Lane, 102, Liberal, Mo., died at 1:55 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at Barton County Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Lane was born March 28, 1900, in Butterfield, Mo., to Albert W. and Ema Overstreet Lane. He was a dog trainer, owning Lane's Modern Kennels since 1940. He was a member of Liberal Baptist Church. At age of 80, he enrolled in art classes at Pittsburg State University.
He married Gladys A. Clark, on April 26, 1936, in Harrisonville, Mo. She preceded him in death on Feb. 1, 1999.
Survivors include two sons, David Lane, Liberal, and Larry Lane, Wichita, Kan.; two sisters, Vernice Tester, Kansas City, Kan., Lorene McClaren, Overland Park, Kan.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nedra Lane, in August 1993, a son, Gordon Lane, on Oct. 10, 1994, and a grandson, Troy Edward Lane.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Lohmeyer-Konantz Funeral Home, Lamar. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27 at the funeral home. Burial will be at Liberal City Cemetery.
Burials are suggested to First Baptist Church or Christian Church, both in Liberal or Liberal Park Fund.
Cecil L. Cooper
Cecil L. Cooper, 76, Carthage, died early Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at Freeman West Hospital. Arrangements are pending at Weng Funeral Chapel, Jasper.
Marcella Florence Sunderland
Marcella Florence Sunderland, 92, Carthage, died at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at Carthage Health & Rehab Center.
Mrs. Sunderland was born Feb. 13, 1911, at Bronaugh, Mo., to Clarence Trimble and Florence Lahmon. She was a lifetime area resident of the Jasper area. She was a homemaker and a farmer's wife. She retired in 1973. She was a resident of Jasper Senior Home until November 1996 when she moved to Carthage.
She was saved and baptized at what is now known as Grand Ave. Church of God. She attended the Jasper Methodist Church.
She married Jacob "Bud" Sunderland on Dec. 31, 1930, at Bud's grandfather's, William Henry Dehart Sunderland, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 22, 1985.
Survivors include a daughter, Ella Marie Leaming and her husband, Roger, Carthage; a sister, Maxine Kimsey, Grants Pass, Ore.; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Cindy Evans, five brothers and two sisters.
Private graveside services were held at 11 a.m. today with Jim Fortner, friend of the family, officiating. Burial was in Hackney Cemetery. "Amazing Grace" and "One Day At a Time" were played at the services.
Memorials are suggested to the Marcella Sunderland Memorial in care of Ulmer Funeral Home, Carthage.
Sherry L. Girard Hutchins
Sherry L. Girard Hutchins, 55, Carthage, died at 1:20 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, after a 15-year long battle with cancer.
Mrs. Hutchins was born June 14, 1947, at San Paulo, Calif., to Adelard E. Girard and Sadie Helen Friend Girard. She owned and operated Star Lanes of Carthage for several years. She had been a resident since 1986, moving from Clinton, Mo., and Harrisonville, Mo. She also lived in Ventura, Calif., for several years.
She married Roy Hutchins, and he survives.
Other survivors include a son, Tommy Ray Hill, Lake Havasu, Ariz.; a stepson, Roy Hutchins Jr., Kenosha, Wisc.; a daughter, Michelle Smith, Carthage; a stepdaughter, Sonia Eppley, Crooksville, Ohio; a brother, Ernest Girard, Ventura, Calif.; two sisters, Janet Girard Wright, Ventura, Calif.; her mother-in-law, Juanita Hutchins, Springfield, Mo.; her sister-in-law, Georgia Ott, Ozark, Mo.; her brother-in-law, Jim Hutchins, Portland, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Hubert Hutchins.
The body has been taken for cremation. No services are planned at this time.
John D. Meador
John D. Meador, 75, Carthage, died at 5:57 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, at McCune-Brooks Hospital, Carthage.
Mr. Meador was born April 20, 1927, in Joplin to James Meador and Ruth Hanks. He retired from work at Safeway Cheese. He served in the Merchant Marines from 1944 to 1957.
Survivors include a grandson, Gary Pierce, Webb City; a granddaughter, Heather Pierce, Carthage; and a great-granddaughter, Caylee Pierce, Webb City.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Howard Meador, Orville Meador and Brownie Meador.
The body was taken for cremation. No services are planned at this time. Arrangements are under the direction of Ulmer Funeral Home, Carthage.
Edith Baetke
LIBERAL, Mo. -- Edith Baetke, 75, Liberal, died at 7 a.m. Monday, April 14, 2003, at her residence after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Baetke was born Feb. 20, 1928, at Maple Valley, Wash., the daughter of Lester and Sarah Clark. She had lived in Liberal for 51 years, moving from Oxnard, Calif. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Baptist Church, Iantha, Mo.
She married Thomas Baetke on Jan. 21, 1948, at Oxnard, Calif., and he preceded her in death on Sept. 28, 2001.
Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Yokley, Liberal, and Mila Swearingin, Cross Timbers, Mo.; two sisters, Mattie Gwinnett and Ethel Simpson, both of the state of Washington; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one son, Herb Baetke, one great-granddaughter and 11 brothers and sisters.
Services was held at 10 a.m. today, April 16 at Liberal City Cemetery, Liberal. Arrangements are under the direction of Lohmeyer-Konantz Funeral Home, Lamar.
Sammy Dale Holder
LARUSSELL, Mo. -- Sammy Dale Holder, 55, died at 1:20 p.m. Friday, April 11, 2003, at his residence.
Mr. Holder was born Aug. 16, 1947, at Cobert, Okla., to James Winford and Florence Lovern Jenks Holder. He had moved from Roswell, N.M., to LaRussell 13 years ago. He was an Army veteran of Vietnam and was a welder for Leggett & Platt, Inc., Carthage.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He married Cathy L. Pearce on Dec. 6, 1974, in Roswell, N.M., and she survives.
Other survivors include three daughters, Jamie Holder, LaRussell, Melissa Holder, Miller, and Tammy Taylor, Blackshear, Ga.; a son, Steven Dale Holder, Marengo, Iowa; his mother, Florence Lovern Holder, LaRussell; a brother, James Dewayne Holder, LaRussell; two sisters, Velma Sue Hamilton and Linda Howard, both of Miller; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father and one sister, Melba Mobbley.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 16 under the direction of Morris-Leiman-Mosher Funeral Home, Miller, with pastor Tony Swillum officiating. Burial will be on the family farm.
Geneva Wilson Dick
Graveside services for Geneva Dick, who died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 12 at Paradise Cemetery, south of Jasper. The Rev. Lee Howard officiated.
Arrangements were with Weng Funeral Chapel, Jasper.
Mary Ann Thornbrugh
WEBB CITY, Mo. -- Mary Ann Thornbrugh, 90, Webb City, died at 3:25 a.m. Monday, April 14, 2003, at Webb City Health & Rehab following a long illness.
Mrs. Thornbrugh was born Jan. 18, 1913, in Tiff City, Mo., the daughter of the late James and Lena Manning. She had been a lifetime area resident.
She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Webb City.
She married Ernest Thornbrugh in 1936, and he preceded her in death in 1972.
Survivors include a son, Clyde Thornbrugh, Webb City; a daughter, Linda Ellis, Reeds; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 16 at Mason-Woodard Mortuary Chapel, Joplin. The Rev. Bob Easton will officiate. Burial will be in Seneca Cemetery. The pallbearers will be her grandsons.
Visitation will be open during regular visiting hours.
Arrangements are under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary, Joplin.
Donald Ralph Blythe Sr.
Graveside funeral services for Donald Ralph Blythe Sr., 66, Goodman, Mo., who died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, were held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 14 at Oak Hill Cemetery, Carthage. The Rev. Bob Poindexter officiated.
Pallbearers were Bill Connor, Jerry Brown, Donald Grisham, Bob Moorehouse, Tom Periman and Kaye Fullerton. The American Legion Post No. 13 provided full military honors.
Memorials are suggested to the VFW Post No. 4142, Neosho.
Services were under the direction of Knell Mortuary, Carthage.
Roleen Johnson Rhine
Roleen Johnson Rhine, 59, Carthage, died at 3 a.m. Thursday, April 10, 2003, at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin.
Mrs. Rhine was born Aug. 22, 1943, to Gilbert Roe Gross and Eula Elizabeth Capps. She worked for 32 years for Carmar and the Mayes family in Carthage, retiring in 1997.
She married Richard Rhine, and he survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Monte Johnson and his wife, Cynthia, Carl Junction, and Colby Johnson and his wife, Tiffany, Springfield, Mo.; three sisters, Mary Belle Patterson, Jasper, Ilene Elliott, Carl Junction, and Eula Durman, Joplin; and the joy of her life, her granddaughter, Sydney Paige Johnson.
The body will be cremated. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 14 at Grace Episcopal Church, Carthage. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Carthage.

Sammy Dean Holder
LaRUSSELL, Mo. -- Sammy Dean Holder, 55, died at 1:20 p.m. Friday, April 11, 2003, at his residence.

Jack Taylor Crusa
Funeral services for Jack Taylor Crusa, 79, Carthage, who died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 12 at Knell Mortuary Chapel, Carthage.
Tributes and remembrances were given by his daughter, Jan Haas, his son, Jack D. Crusa, and personal friend, Ernie Shank. Full military honors were presented by the Missouri Honor Guard, American Legion Post No. 13, Joplin.
Pallbearers were Bob Foshay, Gene Guest, Don Richmond, Howard Smallwood, Andy Stutzman and John Wise.
Private family burial will be held at a later date.
Services were under the direction of Knell Mortuary, Carthage.
Wanda Maxine Jones
IANTHA, Mo. -- Wanda Maxine Jones, 66, Iantha, Mo., died at 12:15 p.m. Saturday, April 12, 2003, at her residence after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Jones was born July 10, 1936, at Jerico Springs, Mo., the daughter of Claude Jones and Sarah Palmer. She lived in the area most of her life and was a homemaker and evangelist.
She was a member of the Bible Holiness Assembly of God, Neosho.
She married Maurice Jones on Jan. 17, 1954, at Iantha, Mo., and he survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Mark T. Jones, Webb City, and Matthew Jones, Export, Pa.; three daughters, Teresa Dayton, Neosho, Ruthanna Monroe, Athens, Texas, and Rachel Salsman, Blanchard, Okla.; a brother, Curtis Jones, Lamar; four sisters, Olive Pyatt and Mary Williams, both of Lamar, Reba Simmons, Irwin, Mo., and Saray White, Borneo, Texas; and nine grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 16 at Barton City Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mark Jones, Matthew Jones, Michael Salsman, Randy Monroe, Matthew Dayton and Floyd Paul Dayton.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lohmeyer-Konantz Funeral Home, Lamar.
Grace Louise Phillips
JASPER, Mo. -- Grace Louise Phillips, 76, Jasper, died at 6 a.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin.
Mrs. Phillips was born Jan. 25, 1927, at Newtown, Mo., to Robert W. and Golda Mae (Johnson) Pauley. She moved to Jasper in 1947. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Jasper First Baptist Church.
She married Everett Phillips on Feb. 12, 1945, at Kansas City, Mo., and he preceded her in death on Feb. 13, 1991.
Survivors include a stepdaughter, Sue Johnson, Jasper; two brothers, Don Pauley, Chillicothe, Mo., and Jim Pauley, Trenton, Mo.; two sisters, Viola Poeschaker, Phoenix, Ore., and Mary Brown, Trenton, Mo.; three step granddaughters, Terry Rives, Jasper, Pam Oeltjen, Golden City, and Jan Johnson, Jasper; four great step grandsons, Rusty Rives, Oronogo, Casey Rives, Jasper, Gabe Oeltjen, Lockwood, and Phil Oeltjen, Golden City; two step great granddaughters, Marcy Rives and Ellie Lucas, both of Jasper; a step great-great-grandson, Brady Oeltjen, Lockwood.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Jackie Pauley, Wayne Pauley and Bobby Pauley; and one step grandson, Randy Johnson.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 17 at Weng Funeral Chapel, Jasper. Visitation will be from 10-10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Paradise Cemetery, south of Jasper.
Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association in care of the funeral home.
