James W. Galbraith
James Warren Galbraith, 90, of Carthage, died at 5:45 p.m. Friday, May 23, 2003, at his residence.
Mr. Galbraith was born on March 9, 1913, in Carthage, to Karr Galbraith and Maude Ballard Galbraith.
He was a member of the First Methodist Church, Carthage and the Cayuga Mission Church, Grove, Okla.
He formerly managed the Cook Paints, Columbia and Joplin, Mo., retired as the founding CEO of G&W Distributors Wallpaper Manufacturing, Oklahoma City, Okla. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the Philippines. He graduated in 1934 from the University of Arkansas with a business degree. He was a member of the Joplin Elks Club; Masonic Lodge 345 AF &AM, Joplin; Scottish Rite, Joplin; Abou Ben Adhem, Springfield, Mo.; Spiva Art Center, Joplin; Humane Society; Slobbergut Football Team; Carthage High School Band. He was a leader and drummer of the Foster Whitton Rhythm Acres that played for the school dances. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and loved the outdoors.
Mr. Galbraith married Janette Whipple Nov. 14, 1937, Carthage and she preceded him in death on July 22, 1992.
Surviving is his daughter, Jan Galbraith.
Music will be provided by Milford Wedel, Jim Thompson, Chuck Wright, Valorie and Richard E. O'Brien and Jan Galbraith. Selection of music is "Any Time," "Roll the Rock Away," by Milford Wedel; "Daddy's Hands," "I Believe," by Jan Galbraith, "Maggie," "Come Morning" by Jim Thompson.
Service time is 1 p.m. today, May 27 at the Ulmer Funeral Home Chapel, Carthage. Officiating is the Rev. Don Marshall and the Rev. Robert Davis. Burial will be at Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Lynn Seaton, Harley Burns, Tommy Dunnaway, Claude Burns, Tim Hill, Bob H. Galbraith, Gregg Galbraith. Honorary pallbearers are Bill Knight, Earl Biesner, Johnny Colson, James Burns Sr., Lyle Galbraith.
Visitation is from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Contributions may be made to Cayuga Mission Church, Grove, Okla., or Oaks Mission Indian School, Oaks, Okla.

Alberta Harris
Alberta Harris, 82, Carthage, died at 5:05 p.m. on Monday, May 26, 2003, at St. John's Regional Health Center, Springfield, after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Harris was born Sept. 10, 1920, in Kansas City, Mo. to Austin and Dell Rose Lynch. She graduated from East High School in Kansas City and attended Harding College in Searcy, Ark., for one year. She was a secretary in the loan department of First Security Savings, Carthage. She also worked as a secretary for the Pioneer Oil Company for seven years. She was a member of the Elm Road Church of Christ and was a Sunday School teacher there for grades one through five.
She married Audrey J. Harris on April 19, 1947, in Olathe, Kan. He preceded her in death on Nov. 5, 1995.
Survivors include two sons, Robert A. Harris, Independence, Mo., Larry A. Harris, Columbus, Ohio; a daughter, Judy L. Barnes, Springfield; four brothers, Jack Kean and Austin Lynch, both Fayette, Mo., Ralph Kean and Jim Lynch, both Kansas City, Mo.; two sisters, Dorothy Obbink, Independence, Mo., and Eileen Potter, Kansas City, Mo., and eight grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Francis Lynch, Lloyd Lynch, Tom Kean, and two sisters, Gladys Mansure and Shirley Duren.
Visitation was held Wednesday at Knell Mortuary, Carthage.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Knell Mortuary with the Rev. Jim Poland officiating.
Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Carthage.
Memorials are suggested to the Willow Brook Christian Community in care of Knell Mortuary.

Theo Clair Rosenthal
LAMAR, Mo. - Theo Clair Rosenthal, 89, Lamar, died at 6:30 a.m. on Friday, May 23, 2003, at Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Lamar.
Mrs. Rosenthal was born Oct. 13, 1913, in Ulysses, Neb. to Thomas and Amy Louis Johnson Pope. She had lived in Lamar since 1943. She was a homemaker and member of the First Christian Church, Lamar.
She was united in marriage to Gerald Raymond Rosenthal on March 28, 1933, in Gering, Neb. He preceded her in death on Dec. 16, 1963.
Survivors include two daughters, Donna Kilpatrick, Golden City, and Karen Orahood, Lamar; a son, Gary Rosenthal, Carthage; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeffrey Smith.
Graveside services were held Tuesday at Lake Cemetery, Lamar under the direction of Weng Funeral Chapel, Jasper.

Clarence L. Hall
SPRINGDALE, Ark. - Clarence Leon Hall, 88, Springdale, Ark., died Monday, May 26, 2003, at his home.
Mr. Hall was born Jan. 13, 1915, in Fort Smith, Ark., to Clarence Arthur and Bessie Moody Hall. He serviced in the U.S. Army. He owned and operated a saw mill. He was a Baptist and a former member of the Masonic Lodge.
He married Violet Poor, who survives.
Additional survivors are two sons, Vernon Duncan, Libby, Mont., and Clarence Leon Hall Jr., Carthage; three daughters, Betty Warnock Black, Camdenton, Mo., Mary Peck, Mountainburg, Ark., and Glenda Berry, Fayetteville, Ark.; four brothers, Leo Hall of Fort Smith, Ark., Rufus Hall, Tracy, Calif., Carl Hall and Earl Hall, both of Sacramento, Calif.; four sisters, Pearl Jackson, Bakersfield, Calif., Viola Tillery, Stockton, Calif., Dovie Brecken, Tracy, Calif., Reba Thornson, Wemire, Calif., 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services were held today at Sisco Chapel in Springdale with the Rev. Lloyd Johnston officiating. Burial was in White Oak Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Verlon Poor, Virgil Poor, Van Poor, Bill Berry, Jason Cranston and Christopher Shores.

Zella "Billie" Nolan.
Services for Zella "Billie" Mae Nolan, 85, Carthage, who died Monday, May 19, 2003, were held May 22 at First Baptist Church, Carthage. Bob Holman, pastor, officiated. Donna Turner was organist. Joyce McLemore was vocalist.
Burial was held in Paradise Cemetery, under the direction of Weng Funeral Chapel, Jasper.
Pallbearers were Jeff Gates, Daniel Gates, John Bacon and David Osburn.

Esther L. Landes
ORONOGO, Mo. - Esther L. Landes, 83, Oronogo, died at 8:51 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at Freeman West, Joplin.
Mrs. Landes was born Oct. 24, 1919, in Joplin to Floyd Johnston and Annabell Frizzle. She was a homemaker.
She married Albert G. Landes on Aug. 5, 1936. He survives.
Additional survivors are five sons, Albert M. Landes, Webb City, Arthur D. Landes, Oronogo, Carl E. Landes, Carl Junction, Robert W. Landes, Springfield, and Terry R. Landes, Palestine, Texas; 17 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, George L. Landes.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at Weaver Cemetery under the direction of Simpson Funeral Home, Webb City.
Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.

Curtis Scott Kreutzer
Memorial services for Curtis Scott Kreutzer, 52, Carthage, who died May 21, 2003, were held May 26 at First Church of the Nazarene, Carthage. The Rev. Joe Lee Tompkins, Boyce Mouton and John Brown officiated.
Bill Lasley sang "How Great Thou Art," accompanied by Deletta Tompkins on the organ.
The QB's Pilot Fraternity, National Hot Rod Association, Carthage School administration and staff, Carthage Lady's Card Playing Club were seated in groups.
A four plane fly over was presented by members of the QB's Pilot Fraternity and Mizzou Aviation.
Graveside services were held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 27 at Park Cemetery, Carthage. John Brown officiated. James Koonce read the QB's Pilot's "Going West" poem which was presented to his wife, Jo Kreutzer.
Memorial gifts may be made to the Campus Crusades for Christ. Services were under the direction of Knell Mortuary, Carthage.

Shirley A. Campbell
WEBB CITY, Mo. - Shirley A. Campbell, 67, Webb City, went to be with the Lord at 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 26, 2003, at her home following a year-long battle with cancer.
Shirley was born on Aug. 11, 1935, in Carthage, Mo., the daughter of the late Wilbur and Lula Bowman Dennis and Harold Hargis. She has been a lifetime area resident.
She married Racy Campbell on Aug. 24, 1953, in Joplin, Mo. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who will be greatly missed. She was a member of the Carterville Christian Church, where she was a member of Evergreen. She served as past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Carterville Chapter 11. She was a former Cub Scout, Girl Scout and Brownie Troop leader. She managed the snack bar at Webb City Schools before working at the Webb City Public Library. Shirley retired after 18 years of service as the head librarian.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Racy Campbell, Webb City; a son, Randy Campbell, Omaha, Neb.; two daughters, Susan Heaps, Webb City, and Beth Smith and her husband, Brian, Carterville, Mo.; a sister, Nancy Melim, and her husband Jim, Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, Richard and Janice Campbell, Webb City, Larry and Patty Campbell Fausett, Neosho, Mo.; four granddaughters, Carmen Tandy, Danielle Heaps, Ashley Heaps and Briana Smith; and two great-granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by a nephew, Larry Fausett Jr.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Park Cemetery in Carthage. Roger Hasselquist, minister, will officiate. The pallbearers will be her nephews: Garry Fausett, Doug Wolcott, Rick Campbell, Don Campbell, David Jennings and Darren Peoples.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Mason-Woodard Mortuary.
Memorial contributions can be made to Community Hospices of America or the American Cancer Society, in care of the mortuary.

Ruth E. Lawrence
JASPER, Mo. - Ruth Evelyn Lawrence, 86, Jasper, died at 11 p.m. on Sunday, May 25, 2003, at McCune-Brooks Hospital, Carthage.
Mrs. Lawrence was born June 3, 1916, in Jasper County, to Everett and Martha Jane Keener Bruffett. She lived her entire life in Jasper County., She was a bookkeeper for Jimmie Fortner Oil Co., for many years and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Zion Baptist Church.
She was united in marriage to Jimmie Lawrence on Aug. 26, 1939, in Columbus, Kan. He preceded her in death on Aug. 29, 1998.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Lambeth, Carthage, and a brother, John Bruffett, Carthage.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28 at Hackney Cemetery, southeast of Jasper. Arrangements are with Weng Funeral Chapel, Jasper.

Louise Baughman
LAMAR, Mo. - Louise Baughman, 85, Lamar, died at 7:57 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2003, at Barton County Memorial Hospital, following a short illness.
Mrs. Baughman was born Sept. 23, 1917, at Duenweg to Charles E. and Myrtle Barbwell Birdson. She was a homemaker and member of Lamar United Methodist Church.
She married Bill Baughman Sr. on April 4, 1938, in Liberty, Mo. He preceded her in death on Feb. 9, 2000.
Survivors include a son, Bill Baughman Jr., Fayetteville, N.C.; two daughters, Sharon Lee Harp, Independence, Mo., and Barbara Maxine Wood, Sacramento, Calif.; a sister, Helen Baker, Kansas City, Kan., 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28, at Memory Gardens, Lamar.
Visitation will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28 at Lohmeyer-Konantz Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to Lamar United Methodist Church.

Neva Maxine Messick
Neva Maxine Messick went to be with her Lord on May 23, 2003, at 2:45 p.m. at St. Luke's Nursing Center in Carthage, Mo., after a lengthy illness at the age of 79 years. She was born on Nov. 5, 1923, the eldest child of Earl Lester and Eunice Magdalene Messick.
She was a member of Herriman Chapel Church, east of Cedar Springs, and a 1943 graduate of the El Dorado Springs High School.
Maxine was always devoted to her family, helping raise her three brothers after the death of her mother on Dec. 25, 1945. Later she had a warm and loving relationship with her stepmother, Hazel V. Messick and sister, Karren Lucille.
She spent her life in the communities around Cedar Springs and El Dorado Springs and was an employee of the International Shoe Company for 36 years.
She enjoyed painting pictures, pillow and quilt tops and painted a quilt for her brothers, sister, nieces and nephews. She had a love for Bible reading, gardening, flowers and traveling.
Her parents and a niece, Debra Sue Messick, preceded her in death.
Surviving her passing are three brothers and sisters-in-law, Julian Eugene and Marjorie Messick of Moberly, Mo.,, Marvin Earl and Sherry Messick of Carthage, Mo., and Marion Kenneth and Sharon Messick of Springfield, Mo.; a sister and brother-in-law, Karren Lucille and Michael Neden of Carthage; nine nieces and nephews; many cousins and special friends.
Funeral services for Neva Maxine Messick will be held on Wednesday afternoon, May 28, 2003, at 2:30 p.m. at the Hackleman Chapel, El Dorado Springs, Mo., with the Rev. Milan Bourland officiating. Interment will be in the Love Cemetery under the direction of the Hackleman and Sons Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:30 p.m. until service time on Wednesday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Herriman Chapel Church.

MICHAEL B. CLAXTON
VERO BEACH, Fla. - Michael Brent Claxton, 52, Vero Beach, Fla., died on May 27, 2003, at his home.
Mr. Claxton was born Jan. 10, 1951, to Mr. and Mrs. J. Frank Claxton. His father preceded him in death.
Surviving is his wife, Bette, his mother, brother, five children and six grandchildren.
Burial was held May 31 at Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery in Fort Pierce, Fla.

Regina May Hensley
Services for Regina May Hensley, 86, Carthage, who died June 2, 2003, were held Wednesday at Fairview Christian Church, Carthage. The Rev. David Lang and Boyce Mouton officiated.
Musical selections were "In the Garden," "How Great Thou Art," "Just a Closer Walk With Thee," "A Song in My Heart" and "I'll Fly Away." All songs were recorded renditions sung by Willard Hill.
Burial was in Park Cemetery, Carthage, under the direction of Knell Mortuary.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Community Hospice of America.

Lonnie Shafer
LAMAR, Mo. - Lonnie Shafer, 56, Lamar, died at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 4, 2003, in Lamar.
Mr. Shafer was born March 31, 1947, in Temple, Texas, to Alfred Caleb and Gertrude Roden. He had lived in Lamar since 2002, moving from Houston, Texas. He owned Lonnie's House of Steaks, Lamar. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Liberal United Methodist Church.
He married Rita Walters Shafer, on Aug. 25, 1968, in Houston, Texas.
Survivors include two sons, Adam Clint Shafer, Houston, Texas, and Miles Ranson Lani, Reno, Nev.; two daughters, Brandi Michele Lani, Houston, Texas and Stephani Alan Lani, Reno, Nev.; a brother, Tommy Shafer, Rogers, Texas; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Liberal United Methodist Church.

Rudy Maxson
Harvey Victor "Rudy" Maxson, 86, Carthage, died at 6:02 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at McCune-Brooks Hospital, Carthage.
Mr. Maxson was born Oct. 10, 1916, in Wildhorse, Colo., to Harris H. Maxson and Letha Hendricks. He lived in Carthage since 1986, moving from Elwood, Kan. He was a policeman in the Doniphan County area. He was acting sheriff and worked as under sheriff for more than 45 years. He was Chief of Police in Elwood, Kan. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Carthage, Masonic Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star, both in Carthage and Wathena, Kan.
He married Evalyn J. Livingston on April 9, 1938, in Oskaloosa, Kan. She survives.
Additional survivors include two daughters, Garnet Stout and Louetta Floyd, both of Carthage; two brothers, Vernon Maxson, St. Joseph, Mo., and Wayne Maxson, Denver, Colo.; a sister, Ioma Pape, Elwood, Kan.; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Larry Wayne Maxson, five brothers and three sisters.
Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 5 at Ulmer Funeral Home, Carthage. Services will follow at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Keith Miles officiating.
A second service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 6 at Harman-Rhode Mortuary in Wathena, Kan. Visitation will be from noon until 2 p.m. Burial will be in Belmont Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Morris Floyd, Larry Stout, Stephen Floyd, Charles Royer, Gabe Royer and Dave Stewart.
Memorial contributions are suggested to First Baptist Church, Carthage.
