Sally Morrow
Sally Morrow, 79, passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at 9:01 p.m. at her home in Carthage, Mo., following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Morrow was born Oct. 11, 1923, in Joplin to James Baxter Porter and Mary Bingham Porter. Both of her parents preceded her in death.
She graduated from Joplin High School in 1940 and attended Duke University and later the University of Missouri.
She married Joseph M. Morrow on Dec. 19, 1944, in Riverside, Calif. He survives.
Her son, Peter Morrow and his wife, Melanie, Scottsdale, Ariz.; her brother, James Porter, and his wife, Kay, Springfield, Mo.; two brothers-in-laws, Sam Morrow and his wife, Jean, Tom Morrow and his wife, Norma, all of Carthage, and two grandchildren, Amy and Charlie survive her.
She was a member of the St. Ann's Catholic Church, the Pi Phi Sorority, the PEO, the Montre Investment Club and a member of the Duplicate Bridge Club (a very distinguished honor among bridge players.) She learned to play the violin from her mother and made her concert debut at the age of 2. She won numerous awards in musical competitions. She was an active golfer and a lifelong member of the Twin Hills Country Club, Joplin. She was a regular competitor in duplicate bridge tournaments.
A visitation will be held Friday, June 6, 2003, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Knell Mortuary.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 7, 2003, at 1 p.m. in the mortuary chapel. Interment
will be in the Park Cemetery, Carthage.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society in care of the mortuary. Arrangements are under the direction of Knell Mortuary, Carthage.
Curtis Scott Kreutzer
Curtis Scott Kreutzer, 52, Carthage, Mo., passed away at 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 21, 2003, in St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo.
Scott was born March 26, 1951, in Pittsburg, Kan. to Raymond Kreutzer and Inae White Kreutzer. Scott was a graduate of Carthage Senior High School, class of 1969, and attended Missouri Southern State College for two years.
He operated the Carthage Airport for several years and was a pilot for Leggett & Platt, Inc. for nine years. He started the flight department for CARMAR, Inc., serving as corporate pilot for seven years. Scott founded Aviation Management, Inc., Carthage, serving the Tamko Roofing Co., Joplin in their flight department. He was a member of the QB's pilot fraternity and was active in the American Hot Rod Association setting several world racing records from 1978-1980. In 1998, he and his son, Russell, started the Kreutzer Racing Team.
Scott married Jo Klinginsmith Thomas on Sept. 22, 2000, while flying over Joplin. He and his wife, Jo, attended the First Church of the Nazarene, Carthage.
Survivors include loving wife, Jo, Carthage; a son, Russell Kreutzer, Carthage; daughter, Rachel Kreutzer, Carthage; a step-son, Gregg Klinginsmith, St. Louis, Mo.; two step-daughters, Mary Jo Klinginsmith, Columbia, Mo., and Jill Klinginsmith, Carthage; two sisters, Marcia Kreutzer, Springfield, Mo., and Sarah Kreutzer, Overland Park, Kan., his parents, Ray and Inae Kreutzer, Carthage.
Scott loved to entertain family and friends with many adventurous stories of his life on this earth. His devotion to his family, his zest for living life to the fullest and his kindness and generosity to all, will be remembered and treasured forever by his wife, family and many friends.
The family has chosen to donate his organs. The body will be cremated.
Friends may pay their respects from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, May 25 at Knell Mortuary,Carthage.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 26 in the First Church of the Nazarene, Carthage. Graveside services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 27 in Park Cemetery, Carthage.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Campus Crusade for Christ. Arrangements are under the direction of Knell Mortuary, Carthage.
Nancy Jean Sanders
Nancy J. Sanders went to be with her Lord and Savior on June 18, 2003.
She lived a full and happy life that she shared with many family members and friends. Nancy was the most self-less and giving person you could ever hope to meet. She always put others' needs in front of her own especially her family's and she was always willing to help out in any way that she could. Nancy enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing games with her sisters, reading and spending time outdoors.
Nancy died 5:10 p.m. Wednesday June 18, 2003, in Freeman West Hospital, Joplin. She was born Sept. 9, 1930, in Carthage to George Brown and Alta Ullom Brown. She has resided in Joplin the last 48 years where she worked in solder production for LaBarge, Inc. for 27 years. She was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Teamsters Local 823, Joplin.
She married C.L. Sanders, he preceded her in death.
Survivors include one daughter, Terry Horton, Pittsburg, Kan.; two sons, Robert Sanders, Seneca, Mo., Dan Sanders, Waveland, Miss.; seven grandchildren, Brent Duran, Sarah Cochran, Christian Sanders, Kathleen Sanders, Emily Sanders, Matthew Sanders, Michael Barnes; one great-grandson, Myles Cochran; one brother, Carroll Brown, Carthage; four sisters, Betty Frantz, Doris Schaunce, Eva Burel, Mary Hopper, all of Carthage.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and three sisters.
Nancy was a beautiful person with a beautiful heart and she will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be held from 7-8 p.m. Friday, June 20 at the Knell Mortuary, Carthage.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 21 in the Knell Mortuary Chapel. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Carthage.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Knell Mortuary, Carthage.
J.R. "Bob" Basnett
CARTERVILLE, Mo. - J.R. "Bob" Basnett, 91, Carterville, died at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin.
Mr. Basnett was born Dec. 27, 1911, in Carterville. He was employed for 38 years with the former Atlas Powder Co., now ICI Explosives, retiring in 1974. He was a member of the Carterville Christian Church and was ordained as a Christian minister and formerly pastored the Christian Church in Lawton, Kan. He was a 50-year member and Past Master of the Carterville Lodge 401 that later merged with the Webb City Lodge 512 AF&AM. He also was a member of the Webb chapter 204 Order of Eastern Star in Webb City.
He married Crystal Hamilton on Jan. 27, 1935, in Vinita, Okla. She preceded him in death on July 14, 1975.
Survivors include a daughter, Robyn Sunderland, Carthage.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Hedge-Lewis Chapel in Webb City with Lee Williams, minister, officiating.
Visitation is from 3-4 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.
Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Carterville Christian Church.
Walter Bridges
MIDWEST CITY, Okla. - Walter Ray Bridges, 75, Midwest City, Okla., died June 19, 2003, at Midwest City Regional Hospital.
Mr. Bridges was born on April 11, 1928, in Wentworth, Mo. to Walter Robert and Beulah Higgins Bridges. He lived in Midwest City area for over 30 years. He was a member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church and was a mason.
Survivors include his wife, Carol, of the home; four sons, Ben Bridges, Diamond; Henry Bridges, Reeds, Ernest Bridges, Joplin and Perry Bridges, Midwest City; a daughter, Marilyn Bridges Miller, Houston, Texas; two step-daughters, Tina Anderson and Donna Anderson, both of Muskogee, Okla.; a sister, Vera Heckmaster, Diamond; a brother, Charley Bridges, Diamond; five grandchildren 10, stepgrandchildren and one step great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Naydeen.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Clark Funeral Home in Neosho.
Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 22 at Diamond (Mo.) Cemetery.
Wilma L. Green
MADERA, Calif. - Wilma L. Green, 91, Madera, Calif., formerly of Carthage, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Madera Community Hospital.
Mrs. Green was born in Polk County, Mo., to James Edward and Gertrude Clark Lyman. She grew up at Carthage, and married Cecil Williams. They made their home in California. He died in 1953.
In 1960, she married Milo Green. He died in 1960. She retired after 23 years as a file clerk for FMC Corporation at San Jose, Calif. She moved to Madera in 2002, to make her home with her son.
Survivors include a son, Steven Green, Madera, Calif.; a brother, Eugene Lyman, Carthage; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille Henry.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Lallarpe Cemetery, LaHarpe, Kan., under the direction of Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel, Iola, Kan.
Cletta May Hansen
Cletta May Hansen, 85, Carthage, died at 8 a.m. Friday, June 13, 2003 at St. Luke's Nursing Center.
Mrs. Hansen was born March 13, 1918 in Eureka Springs, Ark. to William Bartlett Goldman and Daisy Bell (Crow) Goldman. She was a lifetime resident of Carthage, working as a machine operator for Smith Brothers for 33 years until her retirement in 1980.
She was a member of Center Point Christian Church and the Carthage V.F.W.
She married Richard Ward Hansen July 28, 1943, in Columbus, Kan. He preceded her in death on March 10, 1945.
Survivors include a daughter Melba Fern McCune of Carthage; three brothers, Eugene "Bart" Goldman of Carthage, Max Goldman of Carthage and Harmon Rex Goldman of Carthage; a sister, Helen Hutcheson of Joplin; three grandchildren, Richard Lee McCune and David William McCune of Carthage, Lisa McCune (Currey) Daoud of Sarcoxie and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 16, 2003 at Ulmer Funeral Home Chapel in Carthage. Burial will be at Fasken Cemetery.
Visitation is set for 7-8 p.m. Sunday, June 15 at Ulmer Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions can be made to Center Point Christian Church.
Cletta May Hansen
Funeral services for Cletta May Hansen, 85, Carthage, who died June 13, 2003, were held June 16 at Ulmer Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Bob Teegarden officiated.
Cindy Huntley accompanied Katherine Snyder who sang "Whispering Hope" and "Where We'll Never Grow Old."
Pallbearers were Bob McDaniel, Blondie Butler, Dick Sunderland, Levi Snyder, Charles Potter, Gene Huff.
Burial was at Fasken Cemetery, Carthage.
Contributions are suggested to Center Point Christian Church.
Celia Lynn Ivey
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Celia Lynn Ivey, 56, Corpus Christi, Texas, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, June 15, 2003.
She was born March 27, 1947, in Portales, N.M. Celia was a fifth grade math and science teacher at Flour Bluff Elementary School. She was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the choir at Parkdale Baptist Church, where she had been a member for 26 years.
She was preceded in death by her father, Roy Roscoe Ivey.
She is survived by her mother, Muriel Ivey of Corpus Christi; her sisters, Alice Ivey of Corpus Christi and Jeannine Wimberley of Canyon, Texas; two brothers, Roy W. Ivey of Houston and C.T. "Bud" (Sandy) Ivey of Mesquite, Texas, several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Sawyer-George Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2003, in Parkdale Baptist Church with her brother, C.T. Ivey and Brother Robert Simmons, pastor of Annaville Baptist Church officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2003 in Spring Lake Cemetery in Spring Lake, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make contributions in memory of Celia Lynn Ivey to Melanoma Research at M.C. Elizabeth "Betty" Adair
Elizabeth Jane "Betty" Adair, 86, Carthage, died at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, 2003, at St. Luke's Nursing Center.
Mrs. Adair was born April 28, 1917, in Carthage, to Claude Swope and Helen Guild. She was a housewife and member of Grace Episcopal Church, Carthage Musical Devotees and the Organ Historical Society.
She married Lewell Adair on March 11, 1949, in Bentonville, Ark. He preceded her in death on July 12, 1990.
Survivors include a daughter, Susan Adair, Lower Gwyneld, Pa.; two granddaughters, Carol Elizabeth Driggs Will and husband, Patrick and Katherine Adair Driggs and husband Eric Hauser, all of North Wales, Pa., three great-granddaughters, Olivia Grace Hauser, age 4, and twins, Julia Rose Hauser and Madeline Elizabeth Hauser, age 7 1/2.
She was preceded in death by a brother, John Guild Swope.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 20 at Grace Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Park Cemetery under the direction of Ulmer Funeral Home.
Kenneth A. Bates
Kenneth A. Bates, 78, Carthage, died at 3:03 a.m. on Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at St. Luke's Nursing Center.
Mr. Bates was born Nov. 23, 1924, to Fred Bates and Lorinda Doerflinger. He was a dairy farmer and also worked for the railroad in Kansas.
He married Joanne Jader and later married Dorothy Darby.
Survivors include a son, Fred Allan Bates of the state of Iowa; a daughter, Lindy Emmert, Carthage; three brothers, Alex Bates, Miami, Okla., Eugene Bates and Hubert Bates, both of Chelsea, Okla.; four sisters, Irene Robinson, Claremore, Okla., Gwen Giles, Big Cabin, Okla., Winfafred Bates, Vinita, Okla., Anita Coppedge, Las Vegas, Nev.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Chaney Bates and Elmer Bates, two sisters, Betty Bates and Maxine Bates.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Fullerton Cemetery, under the direction of Ulmer Funeral Home. Jeff Martin, minister, will officiate.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Alzheimer's Foundation or the American Heart Association.
Wayne Lee McKinney
LARUSSELL, Mo. - Wayne Lee McKinney, 20, La Russell, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003, in his home.
Mr. McKinney was born May 23, 1983, in Joplin, the son of Gay Duane and Sherry Kay Garrison McKinney, who survive in LaRussell.
Additional survivors include a sister Jessica Adams, LaRussell and his grandparents, Melvin and Mary Hull, La Russell.
Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Omma and John Garrison; and grandfathers Wayne McKinney and Arthur Hull.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2003, in Bruner Cemetery with Gary Jennings officiating. Arrangements were under direction of Adams Funeral Home, Ozark.
Mary Jackson Boyd
Mary Jackson Boyd, 77, Carthage, passed away at 6:14 p.m. Saturday, June 14, 2002, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, following a short illness.
Mary was born March 10, 1926, at Westpoint, Tenn. to Jack Home and Grace Belew Horne. After high school, Mary began working at the Pentagon where she met Warren Boyd, her husband of 57 years. They were married on May 3, 1946, in Washington, D.C. He survives.
She was surround by children her entire life as she was a Sunday school teacher for over 40 years. Mary was a member of the First Baptist Church, Carthage. Years later she worked with children at Little Folks Daycare where she enriched the lives of many.
Mary and Warren started their married life in Washington, D.C. and moved to the Carthage area in 1948.
Mary was a devoted wife and mother. She enjoyed cooking every Sunday for her family and sewing for many Carthage residents. There will be an empty spot at our family and friend's card table. Nothing pleased Mary more than having her family around. Children and grandchildren looked forward to Christmas Eve and other family gatherings, anxious to see what Mary had created with her needle and thread.
Additional survivors include her sisters, Joyce Black of Florence, Ala., and Betty Tarkington, Huntsville, Ala.; three sons, Robert Boyd and his wife, Linda, Carthage, their children, Spencer and his wife, Sarah of Kansas City and Casey of the home; Dennis Boyd and his wife, Donna, of Joplin, and their children, Molli and Megan; Larry Boyd and his wife, Joey, of Carl Junction, and their children, Mykael, Brandon, Bryce and Chase.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17 at Ulmer Funeral Home, Carthage.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 18 at Ulmer's Funeral Home. Burial will be in Park Cemetery.
Mary J. Boyd
Services for Mary J. Boyd, 77, Carthage, who died June 14, 2003, were held June 18 at Ulmer Funeral Home. The Rev. Dr. S. Ray Crews officiated.
Organist Cindy Huntley accompanied Bill Sutter, who sang, "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art."
Pallbearers were Richard Campbell, Bill Cardwell, Albert Heaps, Darrell Smith, Dean Etris and Roy Dennis.
Burial was at Park Cemetery, Carthage. Sons and grandsons served as pallbearers at the cemetery.
