MOBILE COUNTY
Alonzo James Davis
Alonzo James Davis, a local resident who was retired from Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Co., died Monday at a local hospital. He was 85.
He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.
He is survived by nine sons, seven daughters, one brother, 50 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Johnson-Allen Mortuary.
Lavell Hazzard
Lavell Hazzard, a native and resident of Mobile, died Monday at a family residence. He was 51.
Hazzard, who graduated from Central High School, was employed with the University of South Alabama at the Saenger Theatre. He was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church.
He is survived by his father, Milton Hazzard; three children, Kevin Stanley, Jeffrey Stanley and Ray Lewis; three sisters, Barbara Carlton, Debra Porter and Mildred Maxwell; one brother, Terry Hazzard; and seven grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until the 11:30 a.m. funeral service Saturday at Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church No. 2. Burial will follow in Lawn Haven Cemetery.

Jean Hill
Jean Hill, a native of Greenville, Ala., who lived in Mobile, died Monday in a car accident on Rangeline Road.
She is survived by one daughter, Heather Hill Drischel of Mobile; one sister, Joyce Sikes of Greenville; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Parkway Church of God, 4124 Dauphin Island Parkway.
Herbert Leland
Herbert "Poo-Lee" Leland, a retired U.S. Army master sergeant who served in Korea and Vietnam, died Sunday. He was 74.
Leland was a Fowl River native and a Mobile resident.
He is survived by four brothers, the Rev. Willie Leland and the Rev. Leroy Leland Sr. of Mobile, Phillip Woodard of Laurendine, Ala., and Rudolph Leland of Indianapolis, Ind.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Reese Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery.
Deacon Ernest Seals Jr.
Deacon Ernest Seals Jr., a native of Jackson who resided in Prichard, died Sunday at home.
He was a member of Franklin Street Baptist Church, where was a member of the Deacon Board, church clerk, president of the senior choir and Sunday school teacher.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice Seals of Prichard; one daughter, Carol Robinson of Mobile; one sister, Amanda Brown of Beatrice; and four grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service Saturday at Franklin Baptist Church. Burial will be at the Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Cemetery in Jackson.

Addie Mae Wilson
Addie Mae Wilson, a native of Camden, Ala., and resident of Mobile died Monday at a local hospital. She was 95.
Mrs. Wilson was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church.
She is survived by two children, Paul J. Wilson of Tempe, Ariz., and Jessie Rogers of New York City; one brother, Frank Kennedy of Mobile; two sisters, Georgia Kennedy of Mobile and Tillie Chambers of Chicago; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be Friday from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. services at Mount Zion Baptist Church. Burial will be in Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Christian Benevolent Funeral Home.

Mattie M. Rushing
CHOCTAW — Mattie M. Rushing, a homemaker and resident of Choctaw, died Tuesday in a Meridian, Miss., hospital. She was 99.
She is survived by one son, Robert O. Rushing of Decatur, Ala.; one daughter, Janette R. Watson of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today in the chapel of Bumpers Funeral Home in Butler. Burial will be in Siloam Cemetery in York.

Naomi Z. Anderson
WALKER SPRINGS — Naomi Zelma Anderson, an Alma native and Walker Springs resident, died Wednesday at a Mobile hospital. She was 83.
Anderson was a homemaker and member of Perry's Chapel United Methodist Church.
She is survived by four brothers, Cliff R. Bazzel and Cecil Bazzel of Pass Christian, Miss., Arthur T. Bazzel and Charles Bazzel of Panama City, Fla.; one sister, Ruth Farmer of Los Angeles; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at Lathan Funeral Home in Jackson. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Perry's Chapel United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Perry's Chapel Cemetery.
Bettye Sue Lyles
THOMASVILLE — Bettye Sue Lyles, a native of Bashi and a resident of Thomasville, died Tuesday in a local hospital. She was 69.
She is survived by her husband, Tom B. Lyles of Thomasville; two sons, Tim Lyles and Mark Lyles of Bashi; four daughters, Libbi Miles of Bashi, Tommy Sue Smith of Millers Ferry, Terry Norris of Grove Hill and Becky Ivy of Madison, Miss.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Graveside services and burial will be at 3 p.m. today at Bashi United Methodist Church Cemetery.
MONROE COUNTY
William P. Wiggins
FRISCO CITY — William Palmer Wiggins, an insulator and sheet metal mechanic, died Tuesday at Monroe Manor. He was 71.
Wiggins, a native of Monroe County and resident of Frisco City, served in the Army from Sept. 3, 1953, to July 11, 1958. He was a member of Huxford Baptist Church.
He is survived by four daughters, Pamela Jean Hoyle and Robin Marie Smith of Naples, Fla., Tracy Lane Mezatasta of Lorain, Ohio, and Sandy Gayle Sampson of Thomasville, Ga.; three brothers, Clayton Wiggins, Roy Wiggins and Alton Wiggins, all of Frisco City; three sisters, Virgie Mae Gruby of New Britain, Conn., Bernice Frye and Dellie Bargainer, both of Frisco City; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Monroe Chapel Funeral Home. Burial will be in Excel Cemetery. Arrangements are by Monroe Chapel Funeral Home.

Bertha S. Wooten
CANTONMENT, Fla. — Bertha S. Wooten, a native of Alabama and resident of Cantonment, died Tuesday. She was 84.
She is survived by three sons, Johnny Mathew Wooten of Cantonment, Billy Mack Wooten and Jasper F. "Sonny" Wooten, both of Atmore, Ala.; one sister, Clemmie Bell of Atmore; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 this evening at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home in Atmore. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home chapel, with burial in McCullough Cemetery.
Calvin Wilber Havard
GULF SHORES — Calvin Wilber Havard, a native of Rocky Creek, Miss., and a resident of Gulf Shores, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999. He was 71.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Havard of Gulf Shores; a son, Wesley Havard of Point Clear; three daughters, Joan Hayes and Geneva Anders, both of Lucedale, Miss., and Bobbie Sovia of Nashville, Tenn.; three brothers, Ferris Havard and Stanley Havard, both of Ocean Springs, Miss., and John Havard of Valparaiso, Fla.; a sister, Nettie Mathis of Lucedale, Miss.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. today at Miller Memorial Cemetery in Gulf Shores. A memorial service will follow at the Gulf Shores Church of Christ.

Melva Jane Shaw
FAIRHOPE — Melva Jane Shaw, a native of Walker County and resident of Oakman, Ala., died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999. She was 76.
She is survived by two sons, Kent Edward Shaw of Gaithersburg, Md., and Kevin Arthur Shaw of Jasper; one daughter, Marilyn Kaye Shaw of Fairhope; and one granddaughter, Caroline S. Hatfield.
Graveside services were held Wednesday at Providence Cemetery in Oakman, with Bro. Wheeler Pounds officiating.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Mercy Medical Center, P.O. Box 1090, Daphne, AL 36526. Local funeral arrangements are by Fairhope Funeral Home.
Milton A. Merchant
LOXLEY — Milton A. "Jiggs" Merchant of Loxley, a native of Baldwin County, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999. He was 89.
Merchant was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army, and was a member of the Robertsdale Masonic Lodge No. 821.
He is survived by four daughters, Joyce A. Williams of Robertsdale, Joyce Edwards and Betty Lewis, both of Camden, and Gaynelle Hudgens of Hope Hull; three sisters, Verna Vaughn of Robertsdale, Marion Jerkins of Pensacola and Lillie Henderson of Spanish Fort; one brother, Roy Merchant of Robertsdale; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at Mack Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Lee Allen officiating. Burial will be in the Baldwin Memorial Cemetery in Robertsdale.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services, beginning at 9 a.m. Funeral arrangements are by Mack Funeral Home in Robertsdale.
Larry Lee Clark
FOLEY — Larry Lee Clark, a native of Foley, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at his residence. He was 63.
Clark retired from the U.S. Navy after serving for 20 years. He was a member of the American Legion and the Pleasant View Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Juanita Clark of Foley; three daughters, Benita Holder of Kansas City, Kan., Eve Moore of Fairhope and Cynthia Cooper of Foley; a sister, Elizabeth Clark of New Orleans; four brothers, Robert Clark of Georgia, Jessie Clark of Massachusetts, John Clark of Florida and Harry Clark of Elberta; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Bayview Funeral Home in Foley with the Rev. Edward Lyrene, the Rev. Chuck Lowman, Dr. Robert W. Clark and Brother Leon McGhee officiating. Burial will take place in Pleasant View Baptist Cemetery in Foley.
Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.
The family suggests that contributions be made to the Miflin Baptist Church or the Pleasant View Baptist Church building funds. Arrangements are by Bayview Funeral Home in Foley.
Ethel Bishop
FAIRHOPE — Ethel Bishop, a native of Richton, Miss., and a resident of Fairhope, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at a local health-care facility. She was 86.
Mrs. Bishop was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Fairhope.
She is survived by two daughters, Shirley O. Brown and Barbara Ann Long, both of Fairhope; three sons, James B. Bishop of Mobile, George A. Bishop of Fairhope and Ellis A. Bishop of Loxley; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church of Fairhope. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services.
Burial will take place in Brook-Cedron Cemetery.
Visitation will also be held from 6 until 9 tonight at Bayview Funeral Home in Fairhope.
