TOLEDO - Paul J. Speck, 51, of Toledo, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, in his home.
Born Nov. 8, 1948, in Toledo, to Lucille (Martin) and Jay Speck, he lived most of his life in Toledo. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, he served four years, including 18 months in Vietnam. As a resident of Williams County for several years, he worked at Robinair in Montpelier. Surviving are a daughter, Shannon Speck of Montpelier; a son, Jay (and wife, Dulcia (Page)) Speck of Garrett, Ind.; four sisters; and two brothers.
Preceding him in death were his parents; and twin brothers, Rodney and Roger Speck. The family will receive friends Thursday from 2-9 p.m. at the Eggleston-Meinert Funeral Home in Toledo.
Memorial services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Rebecca Rubel
(1914 - 2000)
Rebecca Rubel, 86, of Bryan, died Monday, October 16, 2000, at Harborside Health Care Center in Bryan.
Born in Pulaski, on Sept. 21, 1914, to Cora (Cooley) and Fred Rubel, she was employed in the dietary department of Hillside Country Living for 20 years.
Surviving are two half brothers, Wayne and Blaine Nicholls, both of Bryan; a sister, Bessie May of Bryan and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Ralph Rubel; and a stepbrother; Russell Nicholls.
Visitation will be Wednesday, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Rice Funeral Home in Bryan. Funeral services will be Wednesday, at 2 p.m. in the funeral home, with the Rev. Grant T. Nicholls officiating. Burial will be in the Shiffler Cemetery following the services. Memorials may be made to the Parkinson Foundation.
Rev. Marlin Lee McCann

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. - Rev. Marlin Lee McCann, 65, of North Manchester, died early Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at Peabody Healthcare Center in North Manchester.
Born in Waterloo on July 24, 1935, to Vivian B. (Johns) and Walter Otis McCann, he was married to Lila J. Miller in Smithville, Ohio, on April 21, 1957, and she survives.
A graduate of Ashland University and Ashland Theological Seminary in Ashland, Ohio, he was a First Brethren Pastor in Waynesboro, Pa., McGaheysville, Va., Bryan, Ohio, North Manchester and Milledgeville, Ill. He was a member of the First Brethren Church in North Manchester and a former member of the Rockingham Male Chorus in Rockingham Co., Va. and the Madrigal Singers in Bryan.
Surviving, in addition to his wife Lila, are two sons, Michael (and wife, Mary Schatzer) McCann of Bryan and Steven (Joy Ritchie) McCann of Bridgewater, Va.; and five grandsons, Joshua, Jordan and Jared McCann of Bryan, and Justin and Bryce McCann of Bridgewater.
Preceding him in death were his parents.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-8 p.m. at Grandstaff-Hentgen Bender Chapel in North Manchester, and Thursday from 1-2 p.m. at the First Brethren Church in North Manchester. Funeral services will be held at the church Thursday at 2 p.m., with the Revs. Kurt Stout, David Cooksey and Robert Schmeiser officiating. Burial will follow at the Oaklawn Cemetery in North Manchester.

Evelyn Rupp

WEST UNITY - Evelyn Rupp, 85, of rural West Unity, died Monday morning, Oct. 16, 2000, in the Fulton County Health Center in Wauseon.
Born July 17, 1915, in Franklin Township, to Addie (Buehrer) and Harvey Beaverson, she lived in Fayette until 1946, when she moved to rural West Unity.
On Jan. 1, 1946, she married Vernon Rupp, and he preceded her in death in 1990. She attended the Reformed Mennonite Lauber Hill Church in Fulton County.
Surviving are three sons, Marvin (and wife, Ginger) Rupp of Belleville, Wis., Duane Rupp and Craig Rupp, both of West Unity; a brother, Rollin "Dutch" (Mildred) Beaverson of West Unity; a sister, Mrs. James (Nancy) Sallows of Fayette; and three grandchildren, Nick Rupp of West Unity and Danielle and Susanna Rupp of Belleville.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her husband, were eight brothers, Earl, Lowell, Estel, Carl, Walter, Sam, Willard and Kenneth Beaverson.
Friends may call at the Hollingshead Funeral Home after 7 p.m. today and from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in the Reformed Mennonite Lauber Hill Church, with Pastor Oakley Myers officiating. Interment

Nettie Mae Ruffer
(1916-2000)
ARCHBOLD - Nettie Mae Ruffer, 84, of Archbold, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at Fulton Manor Nursing Home in Wauseon.
Born near Stryker on July 15, 1916, to Mary Ann (Sinkey) and Melvin Pace, she married Donald Ruffer on Feb. 23, 1935, and he survives.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a son, Larry Ruffer of Archbold; and a sister Mrs. James (Ilo) Beltz of Stryker.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Gale and Ora Pace.
Visitation was to have been held Sunday at the Grisier Funeral Home in Archbold.
Funeral services were to have been held today at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Thomas Lutz officiating. Interment
was to have followed in the Archbold Cemetery.

Chelmer O. Mast

SHERWOOD - Chelmer O. "Chuck" Mast, 84, of Sherwood, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000, in the Brookings Hospital in Brookings, S.D.
Born July 23, 1916, in Defiance County, to Augusta (Miller) and James Mast, he married Beulah Catherine Henderson on May 25, 1937, and she preceded him in death in 1990.
Growing up in Mark Center, he played basketball and the saxophone. He and his wife raised their family on a farm outside of Sherwood and following retirement from several occupations in Mark Center and Defiance, they enjoyed traveling. After his wife's death, he moved to Brookings to be near his family.
Surviving are three sons, Jeff (and wife, Diane) Mast of Carmel, Calif., Robert Mast of Redwood City, Calif., and James (Sharon) Mast of Seattle, Wash.; a daughter, Mrs. Randy (Sue Ellen) Knutzen of Brookings. S. D.; six grandchildren, John Robert Mast, Samantha Mast, Shanon Mast-McPherson, and Jon, Ben and Nick Knutzen; a brother, Robert (Betty) Mast of Fort Myers, Fla.; and six nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Wednesday, prior to the services at St. John Lutheran Church in Sherwood. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in St. John Lutheran Church in Sherwood. Burial will follow in the Sherwood Cemetery.

Norbert L. Mangas
(1928-2000)
DEFIANCE - Norbert L. Mangas, 72, of Defiance, died Sunday morning, Oct. 15, 2000, in the Community Hospitals of Williams County in Bryan.
Born in Defiance County on June 2, 1928, to Margaret (Zimmerman) and Richard Mangas, he was married to Grace L. Grimes in 1956, and she survives.
An Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, he was a member of the St. MichaelÕs Catholic Church. In addition to farming, he worked as a mechanic at Campbell Soup for 26 years, until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of the Bishop Rappe Assembly No. 824 4th Degree, Knights of Columbus Msgr. Long 1039 Council, and a member of the American Legion Post No. 117.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are four sons, Michael Mangas of Deshler, Joseph Mangas of Bolivia, South America, Nicholas Mangas and Gregory Mangas, both of Defiance; a daughter, Mrs. Rick (Margaret) Wilson of Federal Way, Wash.; a brother, John Mangas of Knoxville, Tenn; and five grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Ambrose Mangas; and a sister, Mary Seibert.
Visiting hours will be from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the Mast-Mock-Hoffman Funeral Home in Defiance. A vigil service will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the funeral home.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Michael's Catholic Church in Defiance, with Father David Tscherne officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Defiance County.

EDON - W. Dale Joice, 77, of Edon, died unexpectedly Saturday afternoon, Oct. 14, 2000, in his home.
Born Dec. 27, 1922, in Northwest Township of Williams County, to Lalah (Tingley) and Orville Joice, he married Mary "Joan" Racette on Nov. 7, 1958, in Edon, and she survives.
A World War II Army veteran, he was a member of the Montpelier Eagles, and was a former Edon Village Council member and village employee. He was also a former Edon police chief and Florence Township firefighter.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three sons, Jon Racette and Marc (and wife, Debbie) Joice, both of Edon, and Charles Racette of Fort Wayne, Ind.; and two grandchildren, Jessica and Jacob Joice.
Visitation will be in the Krill Funeral Home in Edon today from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
Services will be held Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. in the funeral home, with Pastor Homer Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Edon Cemetery in Edon, with graveside military rites conducted by Edon American Legion Post No. 662.

Monica Magdalen Houser

PIONEER - Monica Magdalen Houser, 71, of Pioneer, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, in her home.
Born July 18, 1929, in Lucas County, to Lauretta (Meyers) and John P. Schmitz, she was married to James R. Houser on Jan. 14, 1948 in Assumption, and he survives.
A household engineer, she was a member of Our Lady of Mercy in Fayette, the Alter and Rosary society of the church, the Pioneer American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 307 and the Montpelier Women of the Moose No. 270.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are three sons, Ronald (and wife, Geri) Houser of Kunkle, Lawrence (Jacki) Houser of Lancing, Tenn. and Virgil (Karen) Houser of Pioneer; two daughters, Mrs. Ted (Barbara) Fellinger of Sugarland, Texas, and Mrs. Terry (Laura) Mercer of Montpelier; three sisters, Mrs. James (Rita) Langenderfer of Raab, Mrs. Thomas (Juanita) Garrett of Petersburg, Mich. and Mrs. Fred (Marjorie) Shininger of Delta; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents; a brother, Virgil O'Neil; a daughter, Kathleen Rose Houser; and a granddaughter, Lorraine Jannette Houser.
Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday in the Thompson Funeral Home in Pioneer, with a Recitation of the Rosary at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy in Fayette, with Rev. Father John Shiffler officiating. Interment

ELGIN, Texas - Larry "L.C." Charles, 56, of Elgin, and formerly of Bryan, Ohio, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, in his home in Elgin.
Born in Bryan on July 19, 1944, to Wilma and L.H. Charles, he was baptized and confirmed at the First Lutheran Church in Bryan. On April 13, 1991, he was married to Marlene ÒKarenÓ Kappeler, and she survives.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served from 1962-1968, with part of his service on board the U.S.S. Fred T. Berry. Interested in security and law enforcement, he was most recently employed with Protective Services 2000 in Texas.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are, his mother, Wilma Charles of Archbold, Ohio; a son, Todd Charles; and four stepdaughters, Candace Thornton, Cary Mikan, Stacey Cilek and Marchelle Kappler; two sisters, Betty Britenriker of Archbold and Susan Roselli of Chico, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his father, L.H. Charles; and a sister, Nancy Ulrich. A service of thanksgiving and praise was conducted at Grace Lutheran Church in Elgin on Oct. 5, 2000.
Marjorie S. Stanley
(1941-2000)
Marjorie S. Stanley, 59, of Bryan, and formerly of Burlington, died early this morning, Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, in her home.
Born in Archbold on Jan. 16, 1941, to Kathryn (Berry) and Oliver Schantz, she was married to Joseph L. Stanley on May 6, 1961, in Burlington, and he survives.
A 1959 graduate of Archbold High School, she was employed for 22 years as a finisher at the former Napco Plastics in Napoleon, and also had worked for the Archbold Telephone Company, as well as General Telephone in Bryan, as an operator.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are her mother, Kathryn Schantz of Archbold; a son, Joseph (and wife, Corrine) Stanley Jr. of Hudson, Mich.; a brother, Oliver Schantz Jr. of Sylvania; a sister, Mrs. Roger (Reny) Memmer of Winter Haven, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Michael Stanley and Subrina Hall.
She was preceded in death by her father, Oliver Schantz.

Vivian Shetler
(1920-2000)
Vivian "Vi" Shetler, 80, died Friday October, 13, 2000, at the Dilworth Center in Montpelier, Ohio.
Born in Edgerton, on Feb. 14, 1920 she was the daughter of Teresa (Stark) and Isadore Lirot. She married Wilson J. Shetler on June, 3, 1939 and he survives.
She graduated from Bryan High School in 1938 and had retired from Uhlman's Department Store.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Mrs. John (Sharon) Brownlee of Defiance; Mrs. William "Bill" (Ruth Ann) Grant of Bryan; Mrs. Phil (Diane) Frager of Edgerton; six grandchildren, two step grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Pauline Bloom, of Stryker; and five brothers, Earl, Roger, and J. Doyle Lirot; all of Bryan; Al Lirot of Delphos; Walt Lirot of Defiance and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one granddaughter, four sisters, Helen Shetler, Marie Siebenaler, Charlotte Lirot and Mary Lirot and two brothers; Donald and La Von Lirot. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., at Rice Funeral Home in Bryan. Funeral services are Monday, Oct. 16, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor H. Raymond Aspinall officiating.
Burial will be at Riverview Memory Gardens in Defiance.

Reba C. Spire

Reba W. Spire, 75, died Friday, October 13, 2000, at Hillside Country Living in Bryan.
Born Nov. 28, 1924, in Toledo, she was the daughter of to Reba (Favorite) and Clarence Meek. She married to Glenn C. Spire Jr. on January 24, 1950, and he preceded her in death on March 30, 1989.
Mrs. Spire was an member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Montpelier, Bryan Eagles, owner of the Hub in Bryan, The Coffee Shop in Montpelier and worked at Gladiux's restaurant.
She is survived by two daughters, Sue Eichner of West Unity; Renee Brewer of Montpelier; three sons, Glen C. Spire III, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; Kevin Spire of N. C.; Terry Spire of Montpelier; a brother, Ervin Meek of Toledo; 14 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. Visitation will be Sunday, October 15, from 1 to 8 p.m. in th Oberlin-Ford Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Monday, Oct. 16, in the funeral home.

ARCHBOLD - Lloyd G. Collyer 81, of Archbold, and formerly of Royal Oak, Mich., died Friday, October 13, 2000 at Fairlawn Haven in Archbold, where he had resided since 1988.
Born Sept. 11, 1919 in Detroit, Mich. he was the son of Ada (Gorton) and Floyd Collyer. He married Irene Edwards on July 22, 1939 and she preceded him in death on Nov. 26, 1977. He lived in Detroit, Mich. for 70 years before moving to Fairlawn Haven, and had retired from Chrysler Corp.in Warren Mich. after 33 years. He served in the Army Air Corps during World WarII. He was a member of the Evergreen Lutheran Church in Detroit.
Surviving are two sons, Curtis Collyer of Detroit, Mich. and Brian (Carolyn) Collyer of Stryker; one daughter, Cheryl (James Moskal) Collyer of Royal Oak, Mich. 12 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Loretta Laugrea of Dade City, Fla.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Colleen Farley; two brothers, LeRoy Collyer and Russell Collyer.
Visitation will be at the Fairlawn Chapel from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000. Funeral services will be on Sunday at 3:30 p.m., at the Fairlawn Chapel, with Pastor David Dyck officiating.
Burial will be in Glen Eden Memorial Park at Livonia, Mich.

ALVORDTON - Norman G. Coler, 57, of Alvordton, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, in the emergency room of the Community Hospitals of Williams County-Montpelier. Born Sept. 23, 1943, in Montpelier, to Ruth (Rummel) and Charles Coler, he was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Vietnam. He had retired this year, after 33 years as a cooker at Spangler Candy Company in Bryan.
Surviving are two sons, Dustin Coler of Alvordton and Joshua Coler of Edon; two grandchildren, Wyatt and Ariel; three sisters, Mrs. Dave (Mary) Bennett of Pioneer, Mrs. Stanley (Rose) Dunbar of Jasper, Mich. and Mrs. Ed (Shirley) Chapin of Ranson, Mich.; two brothers, Gerald (and wife, Patsy) Coler and Harold (Millie) Coler, both of Pioneer. Preceding him in death were his parents; and two brothers, Roger and Carl Coler.

Lounetta Sebring Gilbert

STRYKER - Lounetta Sebring Gilbert, 81, of Stryker, died Saturday morning, Dec. 9, 2000, at the Toledo Hospital, having been in failing health for the past two years.
Born near Delta on Dec. 12, 1918, to Bessie (Bundy) and Raymond Fitzsimmons, she married Dale Sebring on Dec. 5, 1939, and he preceded her in death in 1953. She then married Peter Gilbert on Oct. 30, 1971, and he survives.
Having lived in Archbold and Fayette, she moved to Stryker 10 years ago. She had worked at the Wire Factory in Wauseon, and at ITT Higbie in Archbold from 1965 until her retirement in 1984.
Surviving, in addition to her husband Peter, are a daughter, Mrs. Lowell (Nancy) Ayers of Tedrow; five sons, Marvin (and wife, Patricia) Sebring of Defiance, Neil (Trish) Sebring of Delta, Larry Sebring of Mansfield, Gary (Dixie) Sebring and Joel (Karen) Sebring, both of Tucson; a stepson, Peter (Deborah) Gilbert II of Stryker; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Virgil (Louella) Fitzsimmons of Swanton and Ronnie (Chris) Fitzsimmons of Grand Rapids; two sisters, Mrs. Ruskin (Betty) Tansell of Fort Myers, Fla., and Mrs. James (Verna) Faler of Delta.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her first husband; were a son, Byron Sebring; a daughter, Sharon Stevens; a brother, Alvin Fitzsimmons; and a sister, JoAnn Farley.

WAUSEON - Alice M. Richer, 90, of Wauseon, died Sunday morning, Dec. 10, 2000, at Fulton Manor in Wauseon, where she had been a resident since October 1999. Born near Archbold on Feb. 18, 1910, to Emma (Gautsche) and Daniel Wyse, she married Walter Richer on Dec. 22, 1931, and he preceded her in death in 1997. Having lived most of her life in the Wauseon area, she was a homemaker and a member of the West Clinton Mennonite Church near Pettisville.
Surviving are two sons, Virgil (and wife, Sharon) Richer of Archbold and Leonard (Donelda) Richer of Wauseon; three daughters, Mrs. Orville (LaJane) Yoder of Goshen, Ind., Mrs. Dorwin (Ilene) Nofziger of Wauseon and Mrs. Roger (Shirley) Martin of Mount Joy, Penn.; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her husband, were a granddaughter, Cynthia Jo Richer; two brothers, Ira Wyse and Walter J. Wyse; and three sisters, Fannie Frey, Mary Short and Wilma Beck.

AMARILLO, Texas - Lloyd R. Stahl, 81, of Amarillo, and formerly of Montpelier, Ohio, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, in the Amarillo Hospice Center, following a brief illness.
Born June 19, 1919, in Montpelier, to Florence (Rickey) and G. Grant Stahl, he was a 1937 graduate of Montpelier High School and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served in the Philippines. He married Gussie Bruce in 1940 in Clovis, N.M., and she survives.
He worked as branch manager of the Citizens State Bank and then as executive vice president and director, in Roy, N. M. He was a licensed real estate broker, having retired from banking in 1976 and moving to Amarillo, where he was office manager and comptroller for a distributing company until retiring in 1983.
He was treasurer of St. Paul's Methodist Church in Roy and the Harding County Republican party; he was also an active member, president and northeastern New Mexico zone chairman of the Lions Club.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a son, Rick (and wife, Suzanne) Stahl; a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Charlotte) Gaitrher; a grandson; and two stepgrandchildren.
Preceding him in death were four brothers, Estell, Kenneth, Alva and James Stahl; and three sisters, Blanche Olds, Mae Geesey and Georgia Ketrow.
Funeral services were held in Amarillo, with burial in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Amarillo. Wilson-Geesey Funeral Home in Montpelier was in charge of local arrangements.
Violet M. Oler

Violet M. Oler, 80, of Bryan, and formerly of Montpelier, died Thursday morning, Dec. 7, 2000, at Harborside Healthcare in Bryan, following an extended illness.
Born in Follensbee, W.V. on Oct. 18, 1920, to Alma (Goodall) and Alfred Waugh, she married Ronald B. Oler on April 30, 1966, in Winchester, Va., and he preceded her in death on Sept. 1, 2000. A homemaker, she had lived in the Bryan-Montpelier area since 1991, and was a member of the Montpelier Church of Christ.
Surviving are a son, Paul U. Buffington of Weirton, W.V.; a daughter, Sharon Marie Burkhart of El Cajun, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Lindis Daly of Camarillo, Calif.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a stepgrandchild; a stepgreat-grandchild; and two sisters, Vera Ralston of Fenton, Mo. and Fern Byroads of Bryan.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her husband, were a brother, Melvin Waugh; and a sister, Opal Clark.
There will be no visitation and graveside services will be held at a later date. Krill Funeral Service in Edgerton is in charge of arrangements.
Mary Kathleen (Morr) Kosier
(1944 - 2000)
KUNKLE - Mary Kathleen (Morr) Kosier, 56, of Kunkle, died Thursday morning, Dec. 7, 2000, in Williams County, as the result of homicide.
Born in Morenci, Mich. on Nov. 16, 1944, to Florence Mary (Miller) and Ford H. Morr, she was a former Montpelier and Bryan resident, prior to relocating to Kunkle in 1992. On April 26, 1964, she married Marshall Kosier Jr., and he survives.
A 1962 graduate of Waldron, Mich. High School and a 1963 graduate of Air Line Reservation school in Minneapolis, Minn., she received her associate's degree in accounting from Northwest Technical College in 1982. She had been employed as a night clerk at the Econo Lodge Motel at Exit 2 for the past three years, and she attended the Pioneer Church of the Nazarene. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two sons, Marshall (and wife, Cathy) Kosier III of Bryan and Jeffery (Rita) Kosier Sr. of Bryan; two daughters, Nancy Kosier of Bryan and Mrs. Franklin (Cheryl) Jaggers of Bryan; eight grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; four brothers, Dale (Joan) Morr of Pioneer, Charles (Rhoda) Morr of Novi, LeRoy (Nora) Morr of Waldron, Mich. and Walter (Brenda) Morr of Camden, Mich.; and a sister, Mrs. Kevin (Janet) Yegarty of St. Helens, Mercyside, England.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and a brother, Wayne Morr.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 4-8 p.m. in the Wilson-Geesey Funeral Home in Montpelier.
Memorial services will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the Pioneer Church of the Nazarene in Pioneer, with Pastor Michael Dunson officiating. Burial will be in the Floral Grove Cemetery in Pioneer. Memorials may be made to the Williams County Diabetic Club.
Carl F. Spencer
MAUMEE - Carl F. Spencer, 79, of Maumee, died Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000, in St. Luke's Hospital.
A graduate of Central Catholic High School, he was U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He retired as a branch manager in 1985, after 45 years at Detroit Ball Bearing. A past president of the Defiance Chamber of Commerce and a past member of the Kettering Country Club, he was a lifetime member of Sertoma and a member of the Maumee Elks Lodge No. 1850.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth C. "Betty" Spencer; his children, Ronald (and wife, Lydia) Spencer, Terry (Nancy) Spencer of Bryan, Mrs. Jim (Cindy) Fortlage, Pete Cranker and Gerald (Connie) Cranker; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Rita Heath and Helen Gill.
Preceding him in death were a son, Gerald Spencer; and a brother, George Spencer. Friends may call at the Coyle Funeral Home in Toledo on Monday from 3-7:30 p.m. A memorial service will be held Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

Dorothy E. Suter

Dorothy E. Suter, 91, of Bryan, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at Fairlawn Haven Nursing Home in Archbold.
Born in Alvordton on Aug. 15, 1909, to Myrtle (Lyons) and Harvey Suter, she was a 1927 graduate of Fayette High School. In 1974 she retired after 37 years as the lead payroll clerk with the Aro Corporation in Bryan.
A member of the First Church of Christ in Bryan, she was past president of the Bryan BPW (1961-62), a member of the OES Bryan Chapter No. 248, the Bay View Study Club and the Ladies Circle of the church. She was also associated with the "Birthday Club."
Surviving is a sister, Leola Suter of Archbold; a niece, Mrs. Jerry (Joanna) Pennington of Pearland, Texas; a nephew, Dirk (and wife, Robin) Suter of Houston, Texas; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Richard (Fran) Cheadle of Houston; and a great-niece and three great-nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and three brothers, Robert Suter in 1982, Richard Suter in 1983, and an infant brother, Clifford.
Visitation will be Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at the Rice Funeral Home in Bryan.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home, with Rev. Charles Gautsche and Rev. Dean Phillips officiating. Interment
will be in the Floral Grove Cemetery in Pioneer.
Memorials may be made to the First Church of Christ building fund or to a charity of the donor's choice.
Gale Emerson Salsbury

NAPOLEON - Gale Emerson Salsbury, 95, of Napoleon, died Thursday morning, Dec. 7, 2000, at the Lutheran Home in Napoleon.
Born in Williams County on Dec. 2, 1905, to Effie (Peyton) and Herbert Salsbury, he was married to Geneva Wasnich on March 31, 1929, and she survives.
A longtime farmer, he worked until his retirement at the Farm Bureau Co-op. He then worked at the Lougheed Furniture Store in West Unity and volunteered at the Henry County Hospital Gift Shop.
A member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Napoleon, he helped with the church newsletter, the St. Paul Epistle. He was formerly a member of the Pulaski and Faith United Methodist churches, where he taught Sunday School. He was also a member of The Gideons International. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Mrs. Marvin (Marilyn) Elling of Napoleon; three sons, Herbert of Maumee, Larry of Brookfield, Wis., and David of Norcross, Ga.; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and three sisters, Helen Wheeler and Mrs. Ralph (Jean) Ely, both of Bryan, and Wanda Lougheed of Montpelier. Preceding him in death was a brother, Cleland Salsbury.
Visitation will be Sunday from 2-6 p.m. at the Snyder-Wesche Funeral Home in Napoleon, and Monday from 10-11 a.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the church, with Rev. Norm Koy and Rev. Peter Marcis officiating. Interment
will follow at the Shiffler Cemetery in Pulaski.
