Robert L. Carte
WOODSTOCK, Ga. -- Robert Lee Carte, 84, formerly of Beckley, died Wednesday, July 16, 1997, in a Marietta, Ga., hospital following a long illness.
Born Aug. 5, 1912, at Thurmond, he was the son of the late William Henry and Lola Belle Shafer Carte.
Mr. Carte was a retired warehouse manager for Long Airdox and a United States Army veteran having served in World War II
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Carte.
Survivors include his wife, Eva Irene Panell Carte; two stepsons, Dale Pittman of Daniels and Larry Pittman of Knoxville, Tenn.; a stepdaughter, Linda Colon of Woodstock, Ga.; four stepgrandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Edward Garten officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Friends may call one hour before services at the funeral home.

King R. Harris, 80, of North Beckley, died Thursday, July 17, 1997, at his home following a long illness.
Born Sept. 13, 1916, in Falmouth, Ky., he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Walter Harris.
Mr. Harris was a member of the First Baptist Church of North Beckley, was a retired miner, member of the UMWA Local No. 7086, and the NRA.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Lola Walton.
Survivors include his wife, Iolla Ward Harris; a son, King R. Harris Jr. and his wife, Michelle, of Philadelphia, Pa.; a daughter, Katherine Reid and her husband, Drex, of Philadelphia, Pa.; two nieces, Barbara Walton of Philadelphia, Pa. and Dorothy Ruffin and her husband, John, of Coral Springs, Fla.; and six grandchildren.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church of North Beckley, with the Rev. James Cox officiating. Burial will follow in Loctus Lane Cemetery, Winona.

Martin O. Harvey
LAMOORE, Calif. -- Martin O'Dell Harvey, 67, formerly of Leivasy, died Thursday, July 17, 1997, in a Fresno, Calif., hospital following a short illness.
Born March 30, 1930, at Quinnwood, he was the son of Icie O'Dell of Rainelle and the late C.K. O'Dell.
Mr. Harvey was a retired United States Navy chief, retired air traffic controller, mason and member of Scottish Rites.
Other survivors include his wife, Maurine O'Dell; a son, Jayson O'Dell of Albuquerque, N. Mex.; a sister, Camilla "Millie" Smith of Charmco; four brothers, Clay O'Dell of Rainelle, Bradley and Kenny O'Dell of Greensville, S.C., and Gorden O'Dell of Eskdale.
Services will be 3 p.m. Monday at the Phipps-Dale Funeral Home, Lamoore, Calif.

Myrtle D. Kidd
Myrtle D. Kidd, 91, of Hill Street, Beckley, died Thursday, July 17, 1997 in a Beckley care center following a short illness.
Born March 20, 1906, at Derryhale, she was the daughter of the late Louie Edward and Lavada M. Wright Dotson.
Mrs. Kidd was a homemaker, had been a resident of Beckley since the early 1950's, moving from Willis Branch-Pax area, and was a member of the Calvary Assembly of God Church in Beckley for more than 40 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband John E. Kidd; two sons, Franklin E. Kidd and infant son Douglas; two grandsons, John G. and John E. Kidd; two sisters, Nina Wingrove and Nora L. Dotson; and four brothers, James N. Dotson, Louie E. Dotson Wright, Carnie Dotson and Clarence Dotson.
Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie A. Kidd of Beckley; two sons, Buren R. Kidd and his wife, Betty, and Raymond E. Kidd and his wife, Ann, all of Beckley; eight grandchildren, Larry W. Kidd Sr., Beverly L. Mourad, David R. Kidd, Renee Bennett, Debra A. Bush, Harold D. Kidd, Patricia Noetzold and Jorg S. Kidd; 13 great-grandchildren, Larry W. Kidd Jr., Buren W. Kidd, Justin E. Mourad, Matthew D. Kidd, Ashlea Bennett, Michelle D. Barrett, Jason Blosser, Nicholas Kidd, Jonathan Kidd, Tiffany Noetzold, Daniel A. Kidd, Briahna L. Kidd and Michelle L. Kidd; two sisters, Clifton Dotson and Mary C. Spotts, both of Willoughby, Ohio; and a brother, Luther Dotson of Bossier, La.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday in the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Pastor Vincent E. Beemer officiating. Burial will follow in the Pax Community Cemetery.

Mary Inez Sawyers, 64, of Backus, died Friday, July 18, 1997, in a Bluefield hospital following a long illness.
Born Aug. 26, 1932, at Backus, she was the daughter of the late Elmer Samuel and Eliza Katherine Pugh Sawyers.
Mrs. Neely was a housewife and a former employee of Days Inn and Ramada Inn, Beckley.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Neely; and a daughter, Debra Ann Antolick.
Survivors include a son, Gary Neely of Backus; three daughters, Janet Pugh of Herndon, Va., Pamela Lugar of Oceana, and Terry Campbell of Princeton; two brothers, Elmer Sawyers of Beckley, and Charles Sawyers of Backus; three sisters, Virginia Jones and Jo Anne Grubb, both of Beckley, and Emogene Goins of Scarbro; and nine grandchildren.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Harrah Cemetery, Backus, with Chaplain Parker officiating.
There will be no visitation.

CORLISS -- Snowden Frank Sevy, 82, died Thursday, July 17, 1997, at his home, following a long illness.
Born July 27, 1914, at Corliss, he was the son of the late John and Effie Fox Sevy.
Mr. Sevy was a member of Hilton Village Baptist Church, Hilton Village, a member of UMWA and a retired coal miner and farmer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva J. Martin Sevy; five sisters, Truma Armstrong, Nova Ashley, Julie Douglas, Mazie Sanford and Dorothy Hanshew; and four brothers, Ervin, A.E., Burton, and Noel Sevy.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy J. Williams and Effie S. Crist, both of Corliss; two sons, John S. Sevy of Tecumsch, Okla. and Jerry A. Sevy of Rainelle; a brother Noah J. Sevy of Corliss; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Hilton Village Baptist Church, Hilton Village, with the Revs. Gary Walker and Gene Lloyd Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in the Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

William R. Whaples
FAYETTEVILLE -- William Ross "Bill" Whaples, 73, died Wednesday, July 16, 1997, in a Charleston hospital following a short illness.
Born March 28, 1924, at Charleston, he was the son of the late Sidney and Rachael Edens Whaples.
Mr. Whaples was a retired coal miner, 50 year member of the UMWA and a member of the Jones Avenue First Church of God, Oak Hill.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Lorraine Williams Whaples; three sons, Harold "Charley" Whaples and his wife, Sue Ann, of Fayetteville, David Whaples and his wife, Shirley, of Fayetteville and Gary Whaples of Oak Hill; a sister, Elizabeth Whitt of Atlanta, Ga.; three brothers, Homer Whaples of Charleston, Sidney Whaples of Teays Valley, and Harry Whaples of Ohio; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
